High-tech labor unions have formed at companies such as IBM, Microsoft and Boeing. Unions include the 740,000-member Communications Workers of America (CWA), the 75,000-member International Federation for Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE) and the 250-member Washington Alliance of Technology Workers (WashTech), which organized programmers from Microsoft. CIOs needing to attract and retain top information technology (IT) personnel might find that unions and their contracts can be helpful in obtaining training and benefits.
