The urban built environment is a prime setting for microbial transmission, because just as cities serve as hubs for migration and international travel, components of the urban built environment serve as hubs that drive the transmission of infectious disease pathogens. The risk of infectious diseases for many people living in slums is further compounded by their poverty and their surrounding physical and social environment, which is often overcrowded, is prone to physical hazards, and lacks adequate or secure housing and basic infrastructure, including water, sanitation, or hygiene services. To examine the role of the urban built environment in the emergence and reemergence of infectious diseases that affect human health, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine planned a public workshop. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

This volume presents infectious diseases modeled mathematically, taking seasonality and changes in population behavior into account, using a switched and hybrid systems framework. The scope of coverage includes background on mathematical epidemiology, including classical formulations and results; a motivation for seasonal effects and changes in population behavior, an investigation into term-time forced epidemic models with switching parameters, and a detailed account of several different control strategies. The main goal is to study these models theoretically and to establish conditions under which eradication or persistence of the disease is guaranteed. In doing so, the long-term behavior of the models is determined through mathematical techniques from switched systems theory. Numerical simulations are also given to augment and illustrate the theoretical results and to help study the efficacy of the control schemes.

With the amount of data in the world exploding, big data could generate significant value in the field of infectious disease. The increased use of social media provides an opportunity to improve public health surveillance systems and to develop predictive models. Advances in machine learning and crowdsourcing may also offer the possibility to gather information about disease dynamics, such as contact patterns and the impact of the social environment. New, rapid, point-of-care diagnostics may make it possible to capture not only diagnostic information but also other potentially epidemiologically relevant information in real time. With a wide range of data available for analysis, decision-making and policy-making processes could be improved. While there are many opportunities for big data to be used for infectious disease research, operations, and policy, many challenges remain before it is possible to capture the full potential of big data. In order to explore some of the opportunities and issues associated with the scientific, policy, and operational aspects of big data in relation to microbial threats and public health, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a workshop in May 2016. Participants discussed a range of topics including preventing, detecting, and responding to infectious disease threats using big data and related analytics; varieties of data (including demographic, geospatial, behavioral, syndromic, and laboratory) and their broader applications; means to improve their collection, processing, utility, and validation; and approaches that can be learned from other sectors to inform big data strategies for infectious disease research, operations, and policy. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

28. Tick Surveillance Annual Report 2022
- Abstract
The Utah Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the Utah Public Health Lab (UPHL) conduct tick surveillance to better understand the distribution of tick species across the state, seasonal tick trends, and potential tickborne pathogens which can be acquired in Utah. All of these data help identify areas of risk for certain tickborne diseases across the state. The tick surveillance project began in the summer 2020, and tick identification at UPHL began in summer 2022. Along with DHHS and UPHL, these surveillance efforts have been conducted with help from several other partners including the local health departments (LHDs) throughout the state of Utah, Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR), the Rickettsial Zoonoses Branch at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Heber Valley Camp, and citizens of Utah who submit tick specimens to UPHL. This annual report summarizes the tick surveillance efforts during the 2022 season, including locations where tick drag events occurred, which tick specimens were found, and tick surveillance expansion and improvement efforts.

- Abstract
Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. Chlamydia is transmitted through sexual contact with the penis, vagina, mouth, or anus of an infected partner and can be spread from mother to baby during childbirth. In Utah, the majority of chlamydia cases are seen in adolescents and young adults 15 24 years old. Geographically, the largest portion of Utah's chlamydia cases come from the Wasatch Front. 30. Fact Sheet : Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM)–Naegleria fowleri
- Abstract
Primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) is a rare brain infection caused by the free-living ameba Naegleria fowleri. PAM is a serious disease which destroys brain tissue and causes brain swelling and death. Almost all cases are fatal. Commonly referred to as "brain-eating ameba," Naegleria fowleri can be found throughout the world, typically in natural, warm freshwater environments (lakes, rivers, hot springs, etc.). They are heat-loving and prefer higher temperatures up to 115°F (46°C). When temperatures decline, the ameba become dormant and survive buried in the sediment of water bodies, where they are not a threat, but they can become active when temperatures warm. In the United States (U.S.), the majority of infections occur in the warmer southern states.

- Abstract
Acinetobacter is a group of bacteria commonly found in soil and water, but they can survive on various surfaces (moist and dry). Acinetobacter bacteria can also be found on the skin of healthy people, especially healthcare personnel. While there are many types or "species" of Acinetobacter and all can cause human disease, Acinetobacter baumannii accounts for about 80% of reported infections. Unfortunately, strains of A. baumannii that are multi-drug (antibiotic) resistant are becoming a problem in healthcare settings worldwide.

Examines the ongoing, worldwide epidemiological transition from acute infectious diseases to chronic diseases as the predominant causes of death, presenting a new theory on how chronic diseases have developed.Since the eighteenth century, chronic diseases have superseded acute infectious diseases as the predominant cause of morbidity and mortality; age at death has shifted from childhood to older adult ages; and life expectancy, population, and the proportion of older people continue to increase. This transition constitutes a fundamental change in the human condition, and thus an understanding of the historical process behind it is of major importance. This book is the first to document this ongoing, worldwide epidemiological transition in a single country, drawing on records of cause-specific mortality since the eighteenth century in England and comparative data from other Westerncountries. Alexander Mercer discusses possible causes of specific disease trends, reassessing the relative importance of'health interventions'and'standard of living'as determinants of increased life expectancy, and presents anew theory of how chronic diseases have developed.
