During the forest management planning works of the III Rupea Management Unit, in the Făgăraș Forest District, in the forest fund located within the territory of the Grânari village, in the Jibert commune, several areas of very well-preserved xerophilic meadows were identified, which are part of the forest fund, public property of the state. Because these meadows represent habitats of community interest and in addition support the existence of plant species populations of high conservation interest, both at the European and national level, it has been established that, in the new forestry management plan, their current use should be maintained. Following a brief floristic inventory, 6 species included in the "Romanian Red List of vascular plants " and 2 species of community interest were identified. At the same time, it should be mentioned that this is only the third place where the Centaurea orientalis species was identified in Transylvania. In the end, some active management measures are proposed to maintain the favourable state of conservation of the respective meadows and species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Conservation of biodiversity and natural forests is a very current topic an of great importance both at the global and national levels. In this context, at the Băile Herculane Forestry District, simultaneously with the forest management planning works from 2021-2022, all the stands were analyzed in terms of the criteria for classification in the category of virgin or quasi-virgin forests. Thus, in addition to the 4739.25 ha of such forests that were already included in the National Catalog of virgin and quasi-virgin forests, another 872.95 ha of virgin forests and 998.97 ha of quasi-virgin forests were identified. It is remarkable that for the first time in Romania the black pine groves of Banat were considered, which represent a type of endemic habitat, rare and of exceptional conservative value, both at national and European level. Thus, an area of 1097.74 ha, representing 73% of the maximum estimated total area of this habitat at national level, being included in the category of virgin and quasivirgin forests. Finally, the need to continue the study of the natural black pine groves of Banat in the neighboring forestry districts, but also of other types of old forests at national level, is emphasized, in order to complete as soon as possible the Catalog of virgin and quasi-virgin forests. Biodiversity conservation is a very current topic an of great importance both at the global and national levels. In this context, at the Crucea Forestry District, from the Suceava Forestry Direction, in parallel with the forest management planning works of 2019, a number of rare plant species (Cypripedium calceolus, Leontopodium alpinum, Taxus baccata, Andryala levitomentosa and Rhinanthus alectolorophus) and types of European habitats of great conservation value (9180* Tilio – Acerion forests of slopes, screes and ravines, 91E0* Alluvial forests with Alnus glutinosa and Fraxinus excelsior (Alno – Padion, Alnion incanae, Salicion albae) and 91Q0 Western Carpathian calcicolous Pinus sylvestris forests) were studied. Also, all the stands were analyzed according to the criteria of classification in the category of quasi-virgin forests. Of the obtained results, the identification for the first time of the Rhinanthus alectolorophus species in the Bistrița Mountains is remarkable. For the protection of plant species, a forest area of 101.06 ha has been passed under special conservation regime. The same was done for the habitat types, for an area of 120.33 ha. In the category of quasi-virgin forests were included 5 forest bodies, with a total area of 1119.36 ha. Finally, proposals are made for defining a new type of Romanian habitat, corresponding to the mountain lime forests and also for their inclusion in the guides used to identify forests of high conservation value. The interest for natural stands without human intervention and for monumental trees is lately increasing, both a global and European level, as well as in Romania. After a brief presentation of the past steps and of the current state, the article presents the adopted working methodology and the virgin forests and monumental trees identified in Făgăraș forest district, on the occasion of forest management planning works of 2018. Thus, over 1,000 ha were included in the virgin forest category, accounting for not less than 5 % of all virgin plus quasi-virgin forests recognized at national level by the end of 2018. Trees found to meet criteria to be considered monumental were 42, exceptionally being considerate the 82 to 90 cm diameter Swiss pines (Pinus cembra) from Brezcioara Forest, which have the potential to be the most or one of the oldest trees that currently exist on the territory of Romania. Finally, general and punctual proposals are made for the management of virgin forests and monumental trees, including to create a complex natural reserve whose core is to represent the virgin Brezcioara Forest.
