Understanding spatial correlation is vital in many fields including epidemiology and social science. Lee et al. (Stat Comput 31(4):51, 2021. https://doi.org/10.1007/s11222-021-10025-7) recently demonstrated that improved inference for areal unit count data can be achieved by carrying out modifications to a graph representing spatial correlations; specifically, they delete edges of the planar graph derived from border-sharing between geographic regions in order to maximise a specific objective function. In this paper, we address the computational complexity of the associated graph optimisation problem. We demonstrate that this optimisation problem is NP-hard; we further show intractability for two simpler variants of the problem. We follow these results with two parameterised algorithms that exactly solve the problem. The first is parameterised by both treewidth and maximum degree, while the second is parameterised by the maximum number of edges that can be removed and is also restricted to settings where the input graph has maximum degree three. Both of these algorithms solve not only the decision problem, but also enumerate all solutions with polynomial time precalculation, delay, and postcalculation time in respective restricted settings. For this problem, efficient enumeration allows the uncertainty in the spatial correlation to be utilised in the modelling. The first enumeration algorithm utilises dynamic programming on a tree decomposition of the input graph, and has polynomial time precalculation and linear delay if both the treewidth and maximum degree are bounded. The second algorithm is restricted to problem instances with maximum degree three, as may arise from triangulations of planar surfaces, but can output all solutions with FPT precalculation time and linear delay when the maximum number of edges that can be removed is taken as the parameter. If appropriate colour coding is applied, gymnasts’ visual perception during landing may improve, potentially leading to reduced injuries and enhanced performance. An experiment and a survey were conducted with professional gymnasts at the University of Oklahoma. For the experiment, gymnasts’ visual perceptions were assessed for different manoeuvres using distinctive colours: floral white, lime yellow, and deep blue. Subsequently, we conducted a survey to investigate their preferred colour(s), reasons behind their choices, and any previous injury experiences related to poor visibility. Significant differences between floral white and lime yellow for more complex manoeuvres (e.g., double layout flip with single twist, p = .01, and double layout flip with double twist, p = .03). Survey results indicate that floral white colour was not preferred since the gymnasts reported difficulty distinguishing the floor from the ceiling. Lime yellow was preferred due to its high contrast, and deep blue was similarly favoured because gymnasts were accustomed to it. Additionally, the gymnasts reported other potential colour(s) and/or patterns that could enhance visual perception. The study provides insights into the potential benefits of colour-coded landing areas and establishes a foundation for further research on utilizing other hue variations, lightness, chroma intensity, patterns, and related factors. Anaesthetic drug administration is complex, and typical clinical environments can entail significant cognitive load. Colour-coded anaesthetic drug trays have shown promising results for error identification and reducing cognitive load. We used experimental psychology methods to test the potential benefits of colour-coded compartmentalised trays compared with conventional trays in a simulated visual search task. Effects of cognitive load were also explored through an accompanying working memory-based task. We hypothesised that colour-coded compartmentalised trays would improve drug-detection error, reduce search time, and reduce cognitive load. This comprised a cognitive load memory task presented alongside a visual search task to detect drug errors. All 53 participants completed 36 trials, which were counterbalanced across the two tray types and 18 different vignettes. There were 16 error-present and 20 error-absent trials, with 18 trials presented for each preloaded tray type. Syringe errors were detected more often in the colour-coded trays than in the conventional trays (91% vs 83%, respectively; P =0.006). In signal detection analysis, colour-coded trays resulted in more sensitivity to the error signal (2.28 vs 1.50, respectively; P <0.001). Confidence in response accuracy correlated more strongly with task performance for the colour-coded tray condition, indicating improved metacognitive sensitivity to task performance (r =0.696 vs r =0.447). Colour coding and compartmentalisation enhanced visual search efficacy of drug trays. This is further evidence that introducing standardised colour-coded trays into operating theatres and procedural suites would add an additional layer of safety for anaesthetic procedures. Aim: To assess the knowledge of healthcare workers regarding emergency colour codes in a tertiary care hospital. Additionally, it aims to develop standardised operating procedures and policies based on these codes and provide guidance on their implementation in hospitals for different emergency situations. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Wardha, Maharashtra, India, from December 2021 to May 2022. A total of 100 healthcare workers aged >18 years, employed at a tertiary care hospital, were included in the study. A survey was conducted using a structured questionnaire to assess the knowledge of the participants. The questionnaire consisted of two sections: the first section collected demographic information such as age, gender, qualifications, and profession, while the second section consisted of nine items to evaluate knowledge related to the role of emergency response codes in managing hospital emergencies. Descriptive statistics, including percentages and frequencies, were used to present the results. Results: In the present study, out of 100 study subjects, the maximum percentage (40%) belonged to the age group of 36- 55 years, while the minimum percentage (18%) belonged to the age group of 18-25 years. Among the participants, 25% were male and 75% were female. A significant proportion (92.7%) of the population demonstrated knowledge of the codes for handling hospital emergencies. Specifically, 98% of participants were familiar with the use of code red for fire emergencies, and 88% understood the process of activating code red. All participants had a basic understanding that code blue is used for cardiac arrest, and 85% had knowledge of paediatric emergency codes. Additionally, 96% were aware of the indications for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and 100% knew the abbreviation for CPR. Conclusion: The present study revealed that 96% of the population had good knowledge, while 4% had average knowledge regarding the codes for handling hospital emergencies. Implementing standardised operating procedures and ensuring staff awareness of all emergency response codes used in the hospital are recommended.

Medication errors in anaesthesia remain a leading cause of patient harm. Compared with conventional methods, use of the international colour-code standard on syringes and medication trays allows significantly more errors to be detected, and does so under conditions of cognitive load. Colour is one of the codes that has proved successful in helping students retrieve knowledge, become aware of their strengths and weaknesses and provide them with an opportunity to improve their knowledge, skills and confidence effectively. Using descriptive statistics and hypothesis testing, this paper presents a comparative analysis of the performance of an experimental group of students who received colour-coded feedback and a control group of students who received non-coded feedback. The analysis is aimed at determining the contribution of colour-coded feedback to successful error identification and correction and the development of metacognitive activity. The results of this study point to more successful error correction in selfrevisions and improved performance in translation, revision and reflection tasks among the students who received colour-coded feedback. Promptly calling for assistance in an anaesthetic emergency is important. However, emergency call systems are not present in all locations where anaesthesia is administered, and in those that do have an emergency call system, the call button is often obscured by other equipment or in an unfamiliar location. Placing a red stripe from the ceiling, down the wall, to the emergency call button significantly reduces delays in activating an emergency call, demonstrating a simple but effective system change to the layout of operating theatres. Multilingual films do not always travel well across borders. When translated, multilingualism may become neutralised and washed out. In subtitling, multiple languages used in the original are usually not marked in any way in the target subtitles. This results in neutralisation and linguistic homogenisation, whereby target viewers may not even realise that different languages are spoken in the film. In this study, we test a new solution aimed to help preserve the multilingual nature of films in interlingual subtitling: the strategy of colour coding. To gauge the impact of colour coding on viewers, we conducted a survey-based reception study on a group of 52 Polish hearing speakers who watched a multilingual film with interlingual subtitles in two versions: one where subtitles were coloured, i.e. each language was marked with a different colour, and the other, control condition, where the subtitles were traditionally white. We measured participants' immersive tendency, immersion, comprehension, and cognitive load. While colour coding did not have a significant impact on immersion, we found that individuals with a lower tendency for immersion reported higher immersion levels when watching coloured subtitles. The article deals with numerous initiatives of the EU Commission, both legislative and political, aimed at strengthening the MS coordination in the field of health. Based on the Commission’s recommendations on restrictions of freedom of movement, the author analyzes the «colour coding» of the EU regions to discover travelers arriving from «risk zones», and identifies con- flicting approaches of member States and other critics to this practice. The author shows interest in Commission’s activities for joint procurement of coronavirus vaccines and other medicines and medical instruments, which it carries out using the power received from the Member States. However, the author notes that only a few MS take advantage of these contracts, preferring their national procurement channels. The author considers Commission’s desire to take the next steps in the direction of the Health Union a significant event in the EU health policy. In conclusion, the author foresees upcoming discussions about who will make decisions in the field of health policy in the EU.

Wildland fire management decision-makers need to quickly understand large amounts of quantitative information under stressful conditions. Categorization and visualization "schemes" have long been used to help, but how they are done affects the speed and accuracy of interpretation. Using traditional fire management schemes can unduly restrict the design of new products. Our design process for Ontario's fine-scale, spatially explicit, daily fire occurrence prediction (FOP) models led us to develop guidance for designing new schemes. We show selected historical fire management schemes and describe our method. It includes specifying goals and requirements, exploring design options and making trade-offs. The design options include gradient continuity, hue selection, range completeness and scale linearity. We apply our method to a case study on designing the scheme for Ontario's FOP models. We arrived at a smooth, nonlinear scale that accommodates data spanning many orders of magnitude. The colouring draws attention according to levels of concern, reveals meaningful spatial patterns and accommodates some colour vision deficiencies. Our method seems simple now but reconciles complex considerations and is useful for mapping many other datasets. Health systems in low- and middle-income countries like India continue to struggle with the overwhelming burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) alongside the coexistence of multiple medical conditions. Such cases are challenging to diagnose and treat, especially in places where electronic health records are not readily available. In such contexts, using colour coding system for recording health conditions may ensure optimal documentation, effective patient-provider communication, adherence to treatment and follow up, quality of health services, and an overall improvement in health systems performance for NCDs. Colour coding is a common tool used in several service industries including public health programmes locally and globally. Despite such promising aspects, colour coding is not widely used for NCDs in health services organizations, which necessitates a translation of evidence from other sectors and the adoption of innovative and evidence-based approaches to promote the use of colour coding for better addressing NCD epidemic.

To presents a novel clinically oriented system to report stone attenuation on non-contrast computed tomography (NCCT) using colour-coded density-gradients stone mapping and its clinical applications. This study was performed on 50 patients with 63 stones. All patients had a recent history of failed shockwave lithotripsy (SWL) or failed dissolution therapy by alkalinisation of urine for radiolucent stones. A multi-detector NCCT examination of the abdomen and pelvis was performed in all patients. The stones were isolated and displayed in 'Volume Rendering Technique' using four-colour encoding. Eight patients with failed dissolution therapy for radiolucent stones showed an outer layer of >500 Hounsfield units (HU) or a heterogeneous composition. A total of 42 patients with failed SWL had mean attenuations of <1000 HU on NCCT. Subsequent colour-coded stone mapping showed a dense core in all stones (>1000 HU) that failed to be clearly demonstrated by the mean HU alone. The initial use of a colour-coded density-gradients stone mapping reporting system for stone density on NCCT is useful for explaining failure of SWL or failure of dissolution therapy for radiolucent stones in selected cases. Background & objectives: Foot length of the newborn has a good correlation with the birth weight and is recommended to be used as a proxy measure. There can be variations in the measurement of foot length. A study was, therefore, carried out to develop a foot length calliper for accurate foot length measurement and to find cut-off values for birth weight and gestational age groups to be used by primary healthcare workers. Methods: This study was undertaken on 645 apparently healthy newborn infants with known gestational age. Nude birth weight was taken within 24 h of birth on a standard electronic weighing machine. A foot length calliper was developed. Correlation between foot length and birth weight as well as gestational age was calculated. Correctness of cut-off values was tested using another set of 133 observations on the apparently healthy newborns. Action-oriented colour coding was done to make it easy for primary healthcare workers to use it. Results: There was a significant correlation of foot length with birth weight (r=0.75) and gestational age (r=0.63). Cut-off values for birth weight groups were 6.1, 6.8 and 7.3 cm and for gestational age of 6.1, 6.8 and 7.0 cm. Correctness of these cut-off values ranged between 77.1 and 95.7 per cent for birth weight and 60-93.3 per cent for gestational age. Considering 2.5 kg as cut-off between normal birth weight and low birth weight (LBW), cut-off values of 6.1, 6.8 and 7.3 were chosen. Action-oriented colour coding was done by superimposing the colours on the scale of the calliper, green indicating home care, yellow indicating supervised home care, orange indicating care at newborn care units at primary health centres and red indicating Neonatal Intensive Care Unit care for infants. Interpretation & conclusions: A simple device was developed so that the primary health care workers and trained Accredited Social Health Activist workers can identify the risk of LBW in the absence of accurate weighing facilities and decide on the type of care needed by the newborn and take action accordingly. INTRODUCTION: Health care workers are exposed to the risk of blood-borne diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis B and C in their daily encounter with infected patients and materials through unsafe injections. This study determined the baseline and post-intervention knowledge and practice of modern injection safety standards among health care workers. METHODS: The study population was the healthcare workers in a teaching hospital in southeastern Nigeria. Data was collected using a self-administered 37-item structured questionnaire assessing their knowledge and practice on injection safety. Collected data was analyzed using SPSS. RESULTS: Nurses comprised 62.8% (98/156) of the population. While most had heard of injection safety only 67.2% (84/125) had previously had any form of training on it. Only 54% (81/150) had heard or seen color coded bins. The standard needle and syringe is still widely used and 45% (65/145) still recap needles on syringes after use irrespective of type of personnel. Half (50.6% =78/154) of our respondents had had a previous needle prick injury. Only 25.6% (20/78) with previous needle prick injury had post-exposure prophylaxis. All doctors and laboratory scientists always use gloves compared to 94.8% (91/96) nurses while handling patients or materials. Following the intervention, a significantly high number became aware of post-exposure prophylaxis and color coded bins and liners. CONCLUSION: There is a need for healthcare workers to be regularly updated on changing safety standards in their practice. Also hospitals must be encouraged to acquire and use internationally accepted standard materials in collection and disposal patient's samples.
