This paper describes the phonology of Spanish as it is spoken in Argentina. After considering the inventory of phonemes (both consonants and vowels) and their main allophones and phonological rules (including phoneme neutralizations and the use of stress as a distinctive element), there is a description of the most important variations of pronunciation in the different geographic regions of the country. The paper also includes a section about syllable structure, which deals with the admissible combinations of the different phonemes, and with some issues concerning resyllabification (when words are pronounced in the context of connected speech).

This paper analyzes the behavior of the Argentine hamburger market during the period 2013-2018, to see if an important merger that occurred by the end of 2015 (the BRF/MRP merger) had any discernable market-power or efficiency effects. To do this, we run an econometric demand-and-supply model, and we find that there is an appreciable cost reduction that more than counterbalances the price increases induced by the merger. This implies that total consumers' surplus may have grown as a consequence of the merger.

This paper identifies five phonetic characteristics (seseo, yeismo, /s/-aspiration, rehilamiento, and /x/-aspiration) whose presence or absence allows to distinguish among ten regional varieties in which the entire universe of Spanish speakers can be divided. We also show that, in order to phonetically transcribe a text, taking into account those distinguishing characteristics, it is enough to use 27 phonetic symbols, that constitute an extended phonological inventory that includes both the “controversial” and the “non-controversial” Spanish phonemes. El presente trabajo identifica cinco características fonéticas (seseo, yeísmo, aspiración del fonema /s/, rehilamiento del fonema /ʒ/ y aspiración del fonema /x/) cuya presencia o ausencia sirve para distinguir entre diez variedades regionales entre las cuales se puede dividir el universo de hablantes de la lengua española. En el trabajo se muestra también que para transcribir fonéticamente un texto tomando nota de dichas características diferenciadoras, basta utilizar 27 símbolos fonéticos, que constituyen un repertorio fonológico ampliado que tiene en cuenta tanto los “fonemas controvertidos” como los “fonemas no controvertidos” del idioma español.

In this paper we develop a statistical model of language complexity trade-offs using four typological measures (related to phonology, morphology, syntax and lexicon). The data come from the 100-language sample that appears in the World Atlas of Language Structures (WALS), and the trade-offs are calculated using different types of correlation coefficients. All those coefficients are statistically insignificant when they are computed using a standard (product-moment) methodology, but they become significant when we use simultaneous-equation regression methods, especially the ones based on seemingly unrelated regressions (SUR) and three-stage least squares (3SLS). These results are related to ideas suggested in the theoretical literature, especially in the one about language as a complex adaptive system.

En este trabajo se propone una versión española alternativa de la fábula "El viento norte y el sol", utilizada por la Asociación Fonética Internacional para ilustrar la pronunciación de los distintos idiomas. La misma tiene una serie de ventajas respecto de la versión estándar que aparece en Martínez, Fernández y Carrera (2003) y en Monroy y Hernández (2015), ya que incluye dos fonemas más, tiene menos repeticiones de palabras, está más balanceada fonéticamente, y presenta una distribución de frecuencias de los fonemas que es más cercana a la distribución promedio de dichos fonemas en el lenguaje natural. In this paper we propose an alternative Spanish version of the fable "The North Wind and the Sun", used by the International Phonetic Association to illustrate the pronunciation of different languages. This version has a number of advantages over the standard text that appears in Martínez, Fernández and Carrera (2003) and in Monroy and Hernández (2015), since it includes two additional phonemes, it has fewer word repetitions, it is more balanced phonetically, and it shows a phoneme frequency distribution that is closer to the average distribution in natural language.

Con el advenimiento de la Constitución ecuatoriana del 2008 se han producido cambios significativos en el diseño de la estructura estatal del país. Aquello generó una profunda discusión teórica y normativa sobre la vigencia de paradigmas constitucionales tan antiguos como la tripartición de poderes o la forma del ejercicio de la Democracia. Sin embargo, esta aparente dicotomía entre tipos de democracia, que en nuestro contexto son la representativa, participativa y comunitaria, no ha permitido examinar los avances y retrocesos, con un estudio sigiloso que de cuenta real de la funcionalidad que implican los conceptos destacados. Además que, a partir de la implementación de instituciones estatales creadas para burocratizar derechos democráticos como son la participación ciudadana y el control social en el Ecuador. Se ha tergiversado el rol histórico que tienen los grupos sociales y su evidente necesidad de autonomía. Es por ello necesario analizar dentro de los cambios constitucionales, a la nueva Función de Transparencia y Control Social, en especial al Consejo de Participación Ciudadana y Control Social, puesto que entre algunos de los encargos constitucionales, tiene la facultad de designar a las máximas autoridades del Estado, actividad por la cual se va a constatar cuan legítima es esta función. Finalizado el presente estudio, estaremos en la capacidad de establecer si la nueva forma de designación de las máximas autoridades, unida al novedoso esquema institucional del Estado ecuatoriano se convierten en un aporte a la consolidación del proceso democrático en nuestro país.

Tesis (Ingeniero Civil Industrial) En este proyecto de Plan de Mejora en la Gestión de equipamiento crítico en el Hospital Dr. Luis Calvo Mackenna, se realizó una descripción de la situación actual de la gestión administrativa y operacional de la Unidad de Ingeniería y Mantención. A partir de entrevistas en terreno, se efectuó un levantamiento del proceso de gestión del equipamiento crítico del hospital, el cual está bajo la dirección de la unidad en estudio, con el fin de proponer una solución a la problemática existente en la unidad. Se llevaron a cabo diversas visitas al establecimiento, entrevistando a funcionarios de distintas aéreas, con el propósito de identificar cuál es el procedimiento establecido, para realizar las mantenciones preventivas en los tiempos planificados y también la ubicación de los equipos dentro del recinto. A través de un diagrama de Ishikawa, se pudo identificar una oportunidad orientada a proponer un plan de mejora que se adapte al entorno y a la cultura organizacional. Mediante un rediseño de proceso de la gestión del equipamiento crítico, se estableció la inversión y los beneficios totales de la implementación de un Sistema de Localización en Tiempo Real mediante tecnología híbrida de Radio Frecuencia y Wi-Fi, con la finalidad de optimizar los procesos internos de la Unidad de Ingeniería y Mantención y así ayudar a su futuro proceso de acreditación. Finalmente, la tecnología estudiada en este proyecto de título, asegurará el cumplimiento del 100% del Ámbito de Seguridad del equipamiento, que debe cumplir la Unidad de Ingeniería y Mantención del Hospital Dr. Luis Calvo Mackenna.

This paper presents a model of the penalty-kick game between a soccer goalkeeper and a kicker, in which there is uncertainty about the kicker's type (and there are two possible types of kicker). To find a solution for this game we use the concept of Bayesian equilibrium, and we find that, typically, one of the kicker's types will play a mixed strategy while the other type will choose a pure strategy (or, sometimes, a restricted mixed strategy). The model has a simpler version in which the players can only choose between two strategies (right and left), and a more complex version in which they can also choose a third strategy (the center of the goal). Comparing the incomplete-information Bayesian equilibria with the corresponding complete-information Nash equilibria, we find that in all cases the expected scoring probability increases (so that, on average, the goalkeeper is worse off under incomplete information). The three-strategy model is also useful to explain why it could be optimal for a goal keeper never to choose the center of the goal (although at the same time there were some kickers who always chose to shoot to the center).

This paper studies ten phonetic characteristics of the Spanish language (/s/-/θ/ merger, /ʝ/-/ʎ/merger, /s/-aspiration, /x/-aspiration, /ʝ/-assibilation, /r/-assibilation, /n/-velarization, /tʃ/-deaffrication, /x/- uvularization and /tʃ/-voicing) and analyzes their ability to define dialect areas. We conclude that there are five of them (/s/-aspiration, /x/-aspiration, /n/-velarization, /x/-uvularization and /r/-assibilation) which are particularly useful for that task, since they define between six and fourteen compact dialect areas. Geographic coherence is the main element used to evaluate the usefulness of the studied characteristics, together with some statistic and dialectometric properties. An interesting corollary is that, although they are the most significant phonological variables in Spanish, neither the /s/-/θ/ merger (seseo) nor the /ʝ/-/ʎ/ merger (yeismo) are particularly relevant as geolinguistic markers., El presente trabajo estudia la capacidad de diez características fonéticas (seseo, yeísmo, aspiración de /s/, aspiración de /x/, asibilación de /ʝ/, asibilación de /r/, velarización de /n/, desafricación de /tʃ/, uvularización de /x/ y sonorización de /tʃ/) para delimitar zonas dialectales de la lengua española, y trata de aislar las que resultan más útiles para dicha tarea. Se concluye que hay cinco características (aspiración de /s/, aspiración de /x/, velarización de /n/, uvularización de /x/ y asibilación de /r/) que son particularmente significativas para delimitar zonas dialectales en el mundo hispanohablante, ya que permiten una zonificación que genera entre seis y catorce áreas dialectales compactas. La coherencia geográfica es el principal elemento utilizado para evaluar la utilidad de las características estudiadas, junto con ciertas propiedades estadísticas y dialectométricas de las variables. Un corolario de interés es que, a pesar de ser las variables fonológicamente más relevantes, ni el seseo ni el yeísmo son características demasiado importantes desde el punto de vista geolingüístico.

This paper uses a least-square regression method that relates per-capita income to four phonetic characteristics (r-dropping, and the so-called father-bother, cot-caught and pin-pen mergers), to study the socio-economic significance of those characteristics in North American English. As a result we find a positive and statistically significant relationship between per-capita income and r-dropping, and between per-capita income and the presence of the cot-caught merger, and a negative and statistically significant relationship between per-capita income and the pin-pen merger. No statistically significant relationship is found, however, between per-capita income and the presence of a father-bother merger or split.
