More than 20 years after the end of NASA's Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory mission, the data collected by its Imaging Compton Telescope (COMPTEL) still provide the most comprehensive and deepest view of our Universe in MeV gamma rays. While most of the COMPTEL data are archived at NASA's High Energy Astrophysics Science Archive Research Center (HEASARC), the absence of any publicly available software for their analysis means the data cannot benefit from the scientific advances made in the field of gamma-ray astronomy at higher energies. To make this unique treasure again accessible for science, we developed open source software that enables a comprehensive and modern analysis of the archived COMPTEL telescope data. Our software is based on a dedicated plug-in to the GammaLib library, a community-developed toolbox for the analysis of astronomical gamma-ray data. We implemented high-level scripts for building science analysis workflows in ctools, a community-developed gamma-ray astronomy science analysis software framework. We describe the implementation of our software and provide the underlying algorithms. Using data from the HEASARC archive, we demonstrate that our software reproduces derived data products that were obtained in the past using the proprietary COMPTEL software. We furthermore demonstrate that our software reproduces COMPTEL science results published in the literature. This brings the COMPTEL telescope data back into life, allowing them to benefit from recent advances in gamma-ray astronomy, and gives the community a means to unveil its still hidden treasures., Comment: 31 pages, 23 figures

The sky at MeV energies is currently poorly explored. Here we present an innovative mission concept that builds on and improves past and currently proposed missions at such energies. We outline the motivations for combining a coded mask and a Compton telescope and we define the scientific goals of such a mission. The Galactic Explorer with a Coded Aperture Mask Compton Telescope (GECCO) is a novel concept for a next-generation telescope covering hard X-ray and soft gamma-ray energies. The potential and importance of this approach that bridges the observational gap in the MeV energy range are presented. With the unprecedented angular resolution of the coded mask telescope combined with the sensitive Compton telescope, a mission such as GECCO can disentangle the discrete sources from the truly diffuse emission. Individual Galactic and extragalactic sources are detected. This also allows to understand the gamma-ray Galactic center excess and the Fermi Bubbles, and to trace the low-energy cosmic rays, and their propagation in the Galaxy. Nuclear and annihilation lines are spatially and spectrally resolved from the continuum emission and from sources, addressing the role of low-energy cosmic rays in star formation and galaxy evolution, the origin of the 511 keV positron line, fundamental physics, and the chemical enrichment in the Galaxy. Such an instrument also detects explosive transient gamma-ray sources, which enable identifying and studying the astrophysical objects that produce gravitational waves and neutrinos in a multi-messenger context. COMPTEL was the Compton telescope on NASA's Compton Gamma Ray Observatory CGRO launched in April 1991 and which was re-entered in June 2000. COMPTEL covered the energy range 0.75 to 30 MeV, and performed a full-sky survey which is still unique in this range, with no followup mission yet approved. This remains a major uncharted region, and the heritage data from COMPTEL are still our main source of information. Recent high-energy missions have allowed keeping watch over blazars in flaring states, which provide deep insights into the engine powered by supermassive black holes. However, having a quasar caught in a very bright flaring state is not easy requiring long surveys. Therefore, the observation of such flaring events represents a goldmine for theoretical studies. Such a flaring event was captured by the INTEGRAL mission in June 2015 while performing its (as of today) deepest extragalactic survey when it caught the prominent blazar 3C~279 in its brightest flare ever recorded at gamma-ray energies. The flare was simultaneously recorded by the Fermi gamma-ray mission, by the Swift mission, by the INTEGRAL mission and by observations ranging from UV, through optical to the near-IR bands. The derived snapshot of this broad spectral energy distribution of the flare has been modeled in the context of a one-zone radiation transfer leptonic and lepto-hadronic models constraining the single emission components. The derived parameters of both models challenge the physical conditions in the jet. Blazars radiate from radio through gamma-ray frequencies thereby being ideal targets for multifrequency studies. Such studies allow constraining the properties of the emitting jet. 3C 279 is among the most notable blazars and therefore subject to extensive multifrequency campaigns. We report the results of a campaign ranging from near-IR to gamma-ray energies of an outburst of 3C 279 in June 2015. The overall spectral energy distribution from near-IR to gamma rays can be well represented by either a leptonic or a lepto-hadronic radiation transfer model. Even though the data are equally well represented by the two models, their inferred parameters challenge the physical conditions in the jet. In fact, the leptonic model requires parameters with a magnetic field far below equipartition with the relativistic particle energy density. On the contrary, equipartition may be achieved with the lepto-hadronic model, which however implies an extreme total jet power close to Eddington luminosity., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The active galaxy PKS 0208-512, detected at lower energies by COMPTEL, has been claimed to be a MeV blazar from EGRET. We report on the most recent INTEGRAL observations of the blazar PKS 0208-512, which are supplemented by Swift ToO observations. The high energy X-ray and gamma-ray emission of PKS 0208-512 during August - December 2008 has been studied using 682 ks of INTEGRAL guest observer time and ~ 56 ks of Swift/XRT observations. These data were collected during the decay of a gamma-ray flare observed by Fermi/LAT. At X-ray energies (0.2 - 10 keV) PKS 0208-512 is significantly detected by Swift/XRT, showing a power-law spectrum with a photon index of ~ 1.64. Its X-ray luminosity varied by roughly 30% during one month. At hard X-/soft gamma-ray energies PKS 0208-512 shows a marginally significant (~ 3.2 sigma) emission in the 0.5-1 MeV band when combining all INTEGRAL/SPI data. Non-detections at energies below and above this band by INTEGRAL/SPI may indicate intrinsic excess emission. If this possible excess is produced by the blazar, one possible explanation could be that its jet consists of an abundant electron-positron plasma, which may lead to the emission of an annihilation radiation feature. To probe further the possible nature of the unidentified source IGR J17098-3628, we have carried out a detailed analysis of its long-term time variability as monitored by RXTE/ASM, and of its hard X-ray properties as observed by INTEGRAL. INTEGRAL has monitored this sky region over years and significantly detected IGR J17098-3628 only when the source was in this dubbed active state. In particular, at $\ge$ 20 keV, IBIS/ISGRI caught an outburst in March 2005, lasting for $\sim$5 days with detection significance of 73$\sigma$ (20-40 keV) and with the emission at $< $200 keV. The ASM observations reveal that the soft X-ray lightcurve shows a similar outburst to that detected by INTEGRAL, however the peak of the soft X-ray lightcurve either lags, or is preceded by, the hard X-ray ($>$20 keV) outburst by $\sim$2 days. This resembles the behavior of X-ray novae like XN 1124-683, hence it further suggests a LMXB nature for IGR J17098-3628. While the quality of the ASM data prevents us from drawing any definite conclusions, these discoveries are important clues that, coupled with future observations, will help to resolve the as yet unknown nature of IGR J17098-3628., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figure, accepted in PASJ

We report on an analysis of X- and $\gamma$-ray observations of PKS 1830-211, based on the long-term campaigns carried out by \emph{INTEGRAL} and COMPTEL. The \emph{INTEGRAL} data currently available present a $33\sigma$ significance detection in the 20-100 keV band, while the COMPTEL 6-years data provide a $5.2\sigma$ significance detection in the 1-3 MeV energy band. At hard X-rays, \emph{INTEGRAL} and supplementary \emph{SWIFT} observations show flux variability on timescales of months. At $\gamma$-rays, the source shows persistent emission over years. The hard X-ray spectrum is well represented by a power-law model, with $\Gamma \sim 1.3$ in the 20-250 keV band. This photon index is well consistent with the previous report of $\Gamma \sim 1.3$ obtained at $E > 3.5$ keV from the best fit of \emph{XMM-Newton} data with a broken power law model. The joint \emph{XMM-Newton}/\emph{INTEGRAL} spectrum presented here is then fit with a broken power-law model and the parameters are refined compared to the previous. The results show the photon index changes from $\sim 1.0$ to $\sim 1.3$ at a break energy $\sim 4$ keV. At MeV energies, the spectrum softens to $\Gamma \sim 2.2$. These results, together with the EGRET measurement at $E \ge 100$ MeV, constitute a broad-band spectrum containing the peak of the power output at MeV energies, similar to most high-luminosity $\gamma$-ray blazars. The measured spectral characterstics are then discussed in the framework of the gravitational lens effects., Comment: accepted for ApJ

The COMPTEL unidentified source GRO J 1411-64 was observed by INTEGRAL and XMM-Newton in 2005. The Circinus Galaxy is the only source detected within the 4$\sigma$ location error of GRO J1411-64, but in here excluded as the possible counterpart. At soft X-rays, 22 reliable and statistically significant sources (likelihood $> 10$) were extracted and analyzed from XMM-Newton data. Only one of these sources, XMMU J141255.6 -635932, is spectrally compatible with GRO J1411-64 although the fact the soft X-ray observations do not cover the full extent of the COMPTEL source position uncertainty make an association hard to quantify and thus risky. At the best location of the source, detections at hard X-rays show only upper limits, which, together with MeV results obtained by COMPTEL suggest the existence of a peak in power output located somewhere between 300-700 keV for the so-called low state. Such a spectrum resembles those in blazars or microquasars, and might suggest at work by a similar scenario. However, an analysis using a microquasar model consisting on a magnetized conical jet filled with relativistic electrons, shows that it is hard to comply with all observational constrains. The COMPTEL unidentified source GRO J1411-64 was observed by INTEGRAL, and its central part, also by XMM-Newton. The data analysis shows no hint for new detections at hard X-rays. The upper limits in flux herein presented constrain the energy spectrum of whatever was producing GRO J1411-64, imposing, in the framework of earlier COMPTEL observations, the existence of a peak in power output located somewhere between 300-700 keV for the so-called low state. This and the non-detection at hard X-rays introduce an a-posteriori question mark upon the physical reality of this source, which is discussed in some detail.

INTEGRAL and RXTE performed three simultaneous observations of the nearby radio galaxy Cen A in 2003 March, 2004 January, and 2004 February with the goals of investigating the geometry and emission processes via the spectral/temporal variability of the X-ray/low energy gamma ray flux, and intercalibration of the INTEGRAL instruments with respect to those on RXTE. When combined with earlier archival RXTE results, we find the power law continuum flux and the line-of-sight column depth varied independently, and the iron line flux was essentially unchanging. Taking X-ray spectral measurements from satellite missions since 1970 into account, we discover a variability in the column depth between 1.0x10^23 cm^-2 and 1.5x10^23 cm^-2, and suggest that variations in the edge of a warped accretion disk viewed nearly edge-on might be the cause., Comment: 48 pages, 14 figures, 10 tables, accepted for publication by The Astrophysical Journal
