Abstract

The primary objective of International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 381 was to retrieve a record of early continental rifting and basin evolution from the Corinth rift, central Greece. Continental rifting is fundamental for the formation of ocean basins, and active rift zones are dynamic regions of high geohazard potential. However, the detailed spatial and temporal evolution of a complete rift system needed to understand rift development from the fault to plate scale is poorly resolved. In the active Corinth rift, deformation rates are high, the recent synrift succession is preserved and complete offshore, and earlier rift phases are preserved onshore. Additionally, a dense seismic database provides high-resolution imaging of the fault network and seismic stratigraphy around the basin. As the basin has subsided, its depositional environment has been affected by fluctuating global sea level and its absolute position relative to sea level, and the basin sediments record this changing environment through time. In Corinth, we can therefore achieve an unprecedented precision of timing and spatial complexity of rift-fault system development, rift-controlled drainage system evolution, and basin fill in the first few million years of rift history. The following are the expedition themes: • High-resolution fault slip and rift evolution history, • Surface processes in active rifts, • High-resolution late Quaternary Eastern Mediterranean paleoclimate and paleoenvironment of a developing rift basin, and • Geohazard assessment in an active rift. These objectives were and will be accomplished as a result of successful drilling, coring, and logging at three sites in the Gulf of Corinth, which collectively yielded 1645 m of recovered core over a 1905 m cored interval. Together, these cores provide (1) a long rift history (Sites M0078 and M0080), (2) a high-resolution record of the most recent phase of rifting (Site M0079), and (3) the spatial variation of rift evolution (comparison of sites in the central and eastern rift). The sediments contain a rich and complex record of changing sedimentation, sediment and pore water geochemistry, and environmental conditions from micropaleontological assemblages. The preliminary chronology developed by shipboard analyses will be refined and improved during postexpedition research, providing a high-resolution chronostratigraphy down to the orbital timescale for a range of tectonic, sedimentological, and paleoenvironmental studies. This chronology will provide absolute timing of key rift events, rates of fault movement, rift extension and subsidence, and the spatial variations of these parameters. The core data will also allow us to investigate the relative roles of and feedbacks between tectonics, climate, and eustasy in sediment flux, basin evolution, and basin environment. Finally, the Corinth rift boreholes will provide the first long Quaternary record of Mediterranean-type climate in the region. The potential range of scientific applications for this unique data set is very large, encompassing tectonics, sedimentary processes, paleoenvironment, paleoclimate, paleoecology, geochemistry, and geohazards. 16. Interaction of crustal heterogeneity and lithospheric processes in determining passive margin architecture on the southern Namibian margin

Abstract

The influence of pre-rift crustal heterogeneity and structure on the evolution of a continental rift and its subsequent passive margin is explored. The absence of thick Aptian salts in the Namibian South Atlantic allows imaging of sufficient resolution to distinguish different pre-rift basement seismic facies. Aspects of the pre-rift basement geometry were characterized and compared with the geometries of the Cretaceous rift basin structure and with subsequent post-rift margin architectural elements. Half-graben depocentres migrated westwards within the continental synrift phase at the same time as basin-bounding faults became established as hard-linked arrays with lengths of c.100 km. The rift–drift transition phase, marked by seaward-dipping reflectors, gave way to the early post-rift progradation of clastic sediments off the Namibian coast. In the Late Cretaceous, these shelf clastic sediments were much thicker in the south, reflecting the dominance of the newly formed Orange River catchment as the main entry point for sediments on the South African–Namibian margin. Tertiary clastic sediments largely bypassed the pre-existing shelf area, revealing a marked basinwards shift in sedimentation. The thickness of post-rift megasequences does not vary simply according to the location of synrift half-graben and thinned continental crust. Instead, the Namibian margin exemplifies a margin influenced by a complex interplay of crustal thinning, pre-rift basement heterogeneity, volcanic bodies and transient dynamic uplift events on the evolution of lithospheric strain and depositional architecture.

Abstract

Geophysical, structural, geochronological and geomorphological data indicate that the Psatha, East Alkyonides, Skinos and Pisia faults are Holocene-active structures whereas the status of the West Alkyonides, Strava, Perachora and Loutraki faults is less certain. We see no evidence for significant lateral surface fault growth. New data for late Pleistocene footwall uplift of the Psatha fault are comparable with previously estimated Holocene rates. Pre-Holocene stratigraphic sequences in the Alkyonides Gulf allow calculation of vertical displacement on the Skinos fault of 1.42-1.60 km over a period of >0.6 Ma. Previous palaeoseismological studies indicate comparable displacement rates extrapolated to 0.61-2.20 Ma, whereas extrapolation of previous geodetic data indicate a range of 0.17-0.46 Ma. The latter is too short given the evidence of the stratigraphic record, signifying either that these data may not be representative of longer-term rates, or that significant deformation has taken place elsewhere, for example, on offshore antithetic faults. A case is established for uniform late Quaternary (post-MIS 7) uplift of the Perachora peninsula at rates of c. 0.2-0.3 mm a-1. The lack of regional tilting over Perachora-Corinth-Isthmia is in marked contrast to the situation in the Alkyonides-Megara basins to the east. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Uplifted Pleistocene and Holocene marine and fluvial deposits are preserved in the footwall of the Eliki fault, western Gulf of the Corinth, where geodetic extension rates exceed 10mm a[sup-1]. Up to 10 Pleistocene terraces are distinguished in the footwall block of the eastern Eliki fault segment, discontinuously preserved along strike. Terraces are depositional, forming by the progradation of clastic fan deltas, or predominantly erosional, between fan deltas. Correlation of terrace profiles with Late Pleistocene eustatic sea level suggests an uplift rate of c. 1 mm a[sup-1], with an alternative of c. 1.5 mm a[sup-1]. On average, higher rates are obtained from uplifted Holocene deposits (c. 1-2 mm a[sup-1]). To determine slip rates, a long-term ratio of uplift to subsidence of c. 1:2-3.2, derived from net footwall altitude and basin subsidence-fill and a fault dip of 50° are applied to uplift of c. 1 mm a[sup-1]. These produce a slip rate of c. 4-7 mm a[sup-1] contributing c. 2-4 mm a[sup-1] to extension across the Gulf, significantly less than geodetic rates. This discrepancy may result from strain taken up on faults to the noah and offshore. Uplift rates decrease little at the Eliki fault tips. Abstract

Discrimination between different lithospheric extension models focusing on the roles of low-angle vs. high-angle faulting, and how strain is distributed, requires high-fidelity imaging of brittle deformation. High-resolution seismic reflection and multibeam buthymetric data in the western Gulf of Corinth continental rift were collected to establish the contribution of offshore faults to extension. Onshore fault slip here is significantly less than expected from geodetic strain rates. The rift at this location is a half-graben tilted to the north by S-dipping faults within the uppermost crust. A basement horst on the northern margin is uplifted by the North and South Eratini faults, and the axial channel is fault controlled. Subsided lowstand shorelines in the hanging wall of the North Eratini and the well-studied Aigion fault suggest that the faults have similar displacements. Summed extension from the four major faults across this part of the rift (Eliki, Subchannel, South Eratini, North Eratini) is ∼8–16 mm/yr, thereby reconciling geologic and geodetic data sets. Distributed deformation across isolated multiple faults can model this part of the rift without recourse to, and potentially incompatible with, an underlying low-angle detachment. Abstract

We report the case of a patient who has a 23-year history of endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS). She initially underwent tumor-reductive surgery followed by adjuvant radiotherapy. The pelvic tumor recurred nearly 8 years later, obstructing the ureter and directly invading the bladder. It propagated into the vena cava as a thrombus and finally spread into the right heart chambers, leading to cardiac failure 13 years after the recurrence. The patient was treated with hormonal therapy, multiple resections of the pelvic tumor, chemoembolization, and systemic chemotherapy with doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide. She developed recurrent intractable symptoms and was started on prolonged oral etoposide therapy, which stabilized the size of the pelvic tumor and relieved her symptoms for 3 years. Her quality of life has markedly improved without significant morbidity. We review the options for treating recurrent ESS and suggest that use of prolonged oral etoposide therapy warrants further study in this setting.

Abstract

The efficacy and side effects of subcutaneous epinephrine (E) and aerosolized metaproterenol (M) were compared in acute asthma. Adults randomly received E 0.3 mg sub-Q q20min (max 0.9 mg; n = 20) or M 15 mg in 3.0 ml NaCl 0.9% nebulized over 10 minutes (n = 20) in a double-blind fashion. Vital signs and peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) were measured every ten minutes for one hour. The two groups were comparable in age, weight, baseline theophylline concentration, PEFR, heart rate, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure. PEFR improved in both groups within ten minutes (p less than 0.01; analysis of variance). There was no difference in PEFR between the groups over the one-hour observation period following treatment. Heart rate decreased following treatment in M patients (p less than 0.05), but remained unchanged in E patients. Systolic blood pressure rose slightly in E patients (p less than 0.01), but remained unchanged in M patients. Subcutaneous E and nebulized M are equally effective as initial therapy in acute asthma.
