Symmetry-breaking is pivotal for controlling ferroelectric, ferroelastic and/or ferromagnetic functions of materials, which enables applications in sensors, memories, transducers or actuators. Commonly, ferroic phases emerge from descending symmetry-breaking, as the laws of thermodynamics dictate that the ordered low entropy phases form at low temperature, which limits practical applications of many materials at room temperature. Rare examples of ascending symmetry-breakings have been observed, but the driving force remains often unclear. Here, we report on a ferroelastic symmetry-breaking occurring at high temperature in a spin-crossover material, studied by magnetic, DSC and X-ray diffraction measurements. Our DFT calculations and our model, based on the Landau theory of phase transitions, explain how the cooperative thermal switching of molecular spin state drives a ferroelastic symmetry breaking at high temperature, through a coupled Jahn-Teller distortion. Ferroelastic materials have rich properties, with important applications in memory, multifunctional and novel controllable devices. The electronic bistability in soft functional materials represents an important source of entropy gain, capable of overcoming the cost of symmetry-breaking entropy, which opens up new perspectives for stabilizing high-temperature and low-symmetry ferroic functions of advanced materials

Nonlinear dynamics have long been exploited in order to damp vibrations in solid mechanics. The phenomenon of irreversible energy transfer from a linear primary system to a nonlinear absorber has driven great attention to the optimal design of vibration absorbers both for stationary and transient regimes. Recently, the same principle has also been targeted in acoustics for the absorption of sound waves at high excitation amplitudes. Meanwhile, acoustic absorption by electro-active means has found great success for noise reduction in the linear regime. This study uses a method allowing the design of nonlinear resonators at amplitudes that typically induce linear behaviors. This research proposes an analytical study of the implementation of the duffing equation as a nonlinear electroacoustic resonator coupled to an acoustic mode of a tube. Experiments are carried out and compared to the analytical results. The new generation of Ultra-High-By-Pass-Ratio (UHBR) turbofan engine while considerably reducing fuel consumption, threatens higher noise levels at low frequencies because of its larger diameter, lower number of blades and rotational speed. This is accompanied by a shorter nacelle, leaving less available space for acoustic treatments. In this context, a progress in the liner technology is highly demanded, prospecting alternative solutions to classic liners. The SALUTE H2020 project has taken up this challenge, proposing electro-active acoustic liners, made up of loudspeakers (actuators) and microphones (sensors). The electro-active means allow to program the surface impedance on the electroacoustic liner, but also to conceive alternative boundary laws. Test-rigs of gradually increasing complexities have allowed to raise the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) up to 3-4. In this second part, the electroacoustic liner is adapted to treat the walls at the intake of a scaled turbofan nacelle. Virtual interventions enable the physics-based simulation of device deployment within coronary arteries. This framework allows for counterfactual reasoning by deploying the same device in different arterial anatomies. However, current methods to create such counterfactual arteries face a trade-off between controllability and realism. In this study, we investigate how Latent Diffusion Models (LDMs) can custom synthesize coronary anatomy for virtual intervention studies based on mid-level anatomic constraints such as topological validity, local morphological shape, and global skeletal structure. We also extend diffusion model guidance strategies to the context of morpho-skeletal conditioning and propose a novel guidance method for continuous attributes that adaptively updates the negative guiding condition throughout sampling. Our framework enables the generation and editing of coronary anatomy in a controllable manner, allowing device designers to derive mechanistic insights regarding anatomic variation and simulated device deployment., Comment: Accepted to ECCV 2024

Context: Traditional one-dimensional (1D) hydrostatic model atmospheres introduce systematic modelling errors into spectroscopic analyses of FGK-type stars. Aims: We present an updated version of the STAGGER-grid of 3D model atmospheres, and explore the accuracy of post-processing methods in preparation for spectral synthesis. Methods: New and old models were (re)computed following an updated workflow, including an updated opacity binning technique. Spectroscopic tests were performed in 3D LTE for a grid of 216 fictitious Fe I lines, spanning a wide range in oscillator strength, excitation potential and central wavelength, and eight model atmospheres that cover the stellar atmospheric parameter range (Teff, log g, [Fe/H]) of FGK-type stars. Using this grid, the impact of vertical and horizontal resolution, and temporal sampling of model atmospheres on spectroscopic diagnostics was tested. Results: We find that downsampling the horizontal mesh from its original size of 240 x 240 grid cells to 80 x 80 cells, i.e. sampling every third grid cell, introduces minimal errors on the equivalent width and normalized line flux across the line and stellar parameter space. Regarding temporal sampling, we find that sampling ten statistically independent snapshots is sufficient to accurately model the shape of spectral line profiles. For equivalent widths, a subsample consisting of only two snapshots is sufficient, introducing an abundance error of less than 0.015 dex. Conclusions: We have computed 32 new model atmospheres and recomputed 116 old model atmospheres present in the original grid. The public release of the STAGGER-grid contains 243 models, excluding models with [Fe/H] = -4.00, and the processed snapshots can be used to improve the accuracy of spectroscopic analyses.

We describe the Stagger Code for simulations of magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) systems. This is a modular code with a variety of physics modules that will let the user run simulations of deep stellar atmospheres, sunspot formation, stellar chromospheres and coronae, proto-stellar disks, star formation from giant molecular clouds and even galaxy formation. The Stagger Code is efficiently and highly parallelizable, enabling such simulations with large ranges of both spatial and temporal scales. We, describe the methodology of the code, and present the most important of the physics modules, as well as its input and output variables. We show results of a number of standard MHD tests to enable comparison with other, similar codes. In addition, we provide an overview of tests that have been carried out against solar observations, ranging from spectral line shapes, spectral flux distribution, limb darkening, intensity and velocity distributions of granulation, to seismic power-spectra and the excitation of p modes. We study the asymptotics of a two-dimensional stochastic differential system with a degenerate diffusion matrix. This system describes the dynamics of a population where individuals contribute to the degradation of their environment through two different behaviors. We exploit the almost one-dimensional form of the dynamical system to compute explicitly the Freidlin-Wentzell action functional. That allows to give conditions under which the small noise regime of the invariant measureis concentrated around the equilibrium of the dynamical system having the smallest diffusion coefficient.

In this paper, we present the design and experimental validation of a labyrinthine metamaterial for vibro-acoustic applications. Based on a 2D unit cell, different designs of finite-size metamaterial specimens in a sandwich configuration including two plates are proposed. The design phase includes an optimisation based on Bloch-Floquet analysis with the aims of maximising the band gap and extruding the specimens in the third dimension while keeping the absorption properties almost unaffected. By manufacturing and experimentally testing finite-sized specimens, we assess their capacity to mitigate vibrations in vibro-impact tests. The experiments confirm a band gap in the low- to mid-frequency range. Numerical models are employed to validate the experiments and to examine additional vibro-acoustic load cases. The metamaterial's performances are compared to benchmark solutions, usually employed for noise and vibration mitigation, showing a comparable efficacy in the band gap region. To eventually improve the metamaterial's performance, we optimise its interaction with the air and test different types of connections between the metamaterial and the homogeneous plates. This finally leads to metamaterial samples largely exceeding the benchmark performances in the band gap region and reveal the potential of interfaces for performance optimisation of composed structures.

In this article we study the long time behavior of linear functionals of branching diffusion processesas well as the time reversal of the spinal process by means of spectral properties of the Feynman-Kacsemigroup. We generalize for this non Markovian semigroup the theory of quasi-stationary distribution(q.s.d.) and Q-process. The most amazing result is the identification of the law of the reversal time spinalprocess issued from q.s.d. with the Q-process of the Feynman-Kac semigroup.

We study epidemic spreading in complex networks by a multiple random walker approach. Each walker performs an independent simple Markovian random walk on a complex undirected (ergodic) random graph where we focus on Barab\'asi-Albert (BA), Erd\"os-R\'enyi (ER) and Watts-Strogatz (WS) types. Both, walkers and nodes can be either susceptible (S) or infected and infectious (I) representing their states of health. Susceptible nodes may be infected by visits of infected walkers, and susceptible walkers may be infected by visiting infected nodes. No direct transmission of the disease among walkers (or among nodes) is possible. This model mimics a large class of diseases such as Dengue and Malaria with transmission of the disease via vectors (mosquitos). Infected walkers may die during the time span of their infection introducing an additional compartment D of dead walkers. Infected nodes never die and always recover from their infection after a random finite time. We derive stochastic evolution equations for the mean-field compartmental populations with mortality of walkers and delayed transitions among the compartments. From linear stability analysis, we derive the basic reproduction numbers R M , R 0 with and without mortality, respectively, and prove that R M < R 0 . For R M , R 0 > 1 the healthy state is unstable whereas for zero mortality a stable endemic equilibrium exists (independent of the initial conditions) which we obtained explicitly. We observe that the solutions of the random walk simulations in the considered networks agree well with the mean-field solutions for strongly connected graph topologies, whereas less well for weakly connected structures and for diseases with high mortality., Comment: 31 pages, 13 figures

Sound attenuation along a waveguide is intensively studied for applications ranging from heating and air-conditioning ventilation systems, to aircraft turbofan engines. In particular, the new generation of Ultra-High-By-Pass-Ratio turbofan requires higher attenuation at low frequencies, in less space for liner treatment. This demands to go beyond the classical acoustic liner concepts and overcome their limitations. In this paper, we discuss an unconventional boundary operator, called Advection Boundary Law, which can be artificially synthesized by electroactive means, such as Electroacoustic Resonators. This boundary condition entails nonreciprocal propagation, meanwhile enhancing noise transmission attenuation with respect to purely locally-reacting boundaries, along one sense of propagation. Because of its artificial nature though, its acoustical passivity limits are yet to be defined. In this paper, we provide a thorough numerical study to assess the performances of the Advection Boundary Law, in absence of mean flow. An experimental test-bench validates the numerical outcomes in terms of passivity limits, non-reciprocal propagation and enhanced isolation with respect to local impedance operators. This work provides the guidelines to properly implement the Advection Boundary Law for optimal noise transmission attenuation. Moreover, the tools and criteria provided here can also be employed for the design and characterization of other innovative liners.

As the size of quantum hardware progressively increases, the conjectured computational advantages of quantum technologies tend to be threatened by noise, which randomly corrupts the design of quantum logical gates. Several methods already exist to reduce the impacts of noise on that matter. However, a reliable and user-friendly one to reduce the noise impact has not been presented yet. Addressing this issue, this paper proposes a relevant method based on evolutionary optimisation and modulation of the gate design. This method consists of two parts : a model of quantum gate design with time-dependent noise terms, parameterised by a vector of laser phases, and an evolutionary optimisation platform aimed at satisfying a trade-off between the gate fidelity and a pulse duration-related metric of the time consuming simulation model. This feature is the main novelty of this work. Another advantage is the ability to treat any noise spectrum, regardless of its characteristics (e.g., variance, frequency range, etc). A thorough validation of the method is presented, which is based on empirical averaging of random gate trajectories. It is shown that evolutionary based method is successfully applied for noise mitigation. It is expected that the proposed method will help designing more and more noise-resisting quantum gates.

Transiting planets with orbital periods longer than 40 d are extremely rare among the 5000+ planets discovered so far. The lack of discoveries of this population poses a challenge to research into planetary demographics, formation, and evolution. Here, we present the detection and characterization of HD88986b, a potentially transiting sub-Neptune, possessing the longest orbital period among known transiting small planets (< 4 R$_{\oplus}$) with a precise mass measurement ($\sigma_M/M$ > 25%). Additionally, we identified the presence of a massive companion in a wider orbit around HD88986. Our analysis reveals that HD88986b, based on two potential single transits on sector 21 and sector 48 which are both consistent with the predicted transit time from the RV model, is potentially transiting. The joint analysis of RV and photometric data show that HD88986b has a radius of 2.49$\pm$0.18 R$_{\oplus}$, a mass of 17.2$^{+4.0}_{-3.8}$ M$_{\oplus}$, and it orbits every 146.05$^{+0.43}_{-0.40}$ d around a subgiant HD88986 which is one of the closest and brightest exoplanet host stars (G2V type, R=1.543 $\pm$0.065 R$_{\odot}$, V=$6.47\pm 0.01$ mag, distance=33.37$\pm$0.04 pc). The nature of the outer, massive companion is still to be confirmed; a joint analysis of RVs, Hipparcos, and Gaia astrometric data shows that with a 3$\sigma$ confidence interval, its semi-major axis is between 16.7 and 38.8 au and its mass is between 68 and 284 M$_{Jup}$. HD88986b's wide orbit suggests the planet did not undergo significant mass loss due to extreme-ultraviolet radiation from its host star. Therefore, it probably maintained its primordial composition, allowing us to probe its formation scenario. Furthermore, the cold nature of HD88986b (460$\pm$8 K), thanks to its long orbital period, will open up exciting opportunities for future studies of cold atmosphere composition characterization., Comment: 37 pages, accepted to be published in A&A

The chiral nature of a badminton shuttlecock is responsible for its anti-clockwise spinning as it naturally propagates through the air. This induces a dissymmetry between left-handed and right-handed players and the resulting trajectories of the shuttlecock, which were captured in real condition on the badminton court and in slow-motion at 3700 fps. The videos clearly evidence this dissymmetry as slice shots performed by righties accelerate the natural anti-clockwise spinning, while the one performed by lefties induces a clockwise to anti-clockwise spinning, making trajectories of shuttlecocks different. The slow-motion videos also caught a brief Magnus effect, often neglected in badminton, lifting up the shuttlecock for both lefties and righties and affecting the effectiveness of the slice shot., Comment: Videos are available here: doi 10.5281/zenodo.10012876

Our study is devoted to a four-compartment epidemic model of a constant population of independent random walkers. Each walker is in one of four compartments (S-susceptible, C-infected but not infectious (period of incubation), I-infected and infectious, R-recovered and immune) characterizing the states of health. The walkers navigate independently on a periodic 2D lattice. Infections occur by collisions of susceptible and infectious walkers. Once infected, a walker undergoes the delayed cyclic transition pathway S $\to$ C $\to$ I $\to$ R $\to$ S. The random delay times between the transitions (sojourn times in the compartments) are drawn from independent probability density functions (PDFs). We analyze the existence of the endemic equilibrium and stability of the globally healthy state and derive a condition for the spread of the epidemics which we connect with the basic reproduction number $R_0>1$. At Jupiter, part of the auroral radio emissions are induced by the Galilean moons Io, Europa and Ganymede. Until now, except for Ganymede, they have been only remotely detected, using ground-based radio-telescopes or electric antennas aboard spacecraft. The polar trajectory of the Juno orbiter allows the spacecraft to cross the range of magnetic flux tubes which sustain the various Jupiter-satellite interactions, and in turn to sample in situ the associated radio emission regions. In this study, we focus on the detection and the characterization of radio sources associated with Io, Europa and Ganymede. Using electric wave measurements or radio observations (Juno/Waves), in situ electron measurements (Juno/JADE-E), and magnetic field measurements (Juno/MAG) we demonstrate that the Cyclotron Maser Instability (CMI) driven by a loss-cone electron distribution function is responsible for the encountered radio sources. We confirmed that radio emissions are associated with Main (MAW) or Reflected Alfv\'en Wing (RAW), but also show that for Europa and Ganymede, induced radio emissions are associated with Transhemispheric Electron Beam (TEB). For each traversed radio source, we determine the latitudinal extension, the CMI-resonant electron energy, and the bandwidth of the emission. We show that the presence of Alfv\'en perturbations and downward field aligned currents are necessary for the radio emissions to be amplified.

Functionally significant coronary artery disease (CAD) is caused by plaque buildup in the coronary arteries, potentially leading to narrowing of the arterial lumen, i.e. coronary stenosis, that significantly obstructs blood flow to the myocardium. The current reference for establishing the presence of a functionally significant stenosis is invasive fractional flow reserve (FFR) measurement. To avoid invasive measurements, non-invasive prediction of FFR from coronary CT angiography (CCTA) has emerged. For this, machine learning approaches, characterized by fast inference, are increasingly developed. However, these methods predict a single FFR value per artery i.e. they don't provide information about the stenosis location or treatment strategy. We propose a deep learning-based method to predict the FFR along the artery from CCTA scans. This study includes CCTA images of 110 patients who underwent invasive FFR pullback measurement in 112 arteries. First, a multi planar reconstruction (MPR) of the artery is fed to a variational autoencoder to characterize the artery, i.e. through the lumen area and unsupervised artery encodings. Thereafter, a convolutional neural network (CNN) predicts the FFR along the artery. The CNN is supervised by multiple loss functions, notably a loss function inspired by the Earth Mover's Distance (EMD) to predict the correct location of FFR drops and a histogram-based loss to explicitly supervise the slope of the FFR curve. To train and evaluate our model, eight-fold cross-validation was performed. The resulting FFR curves show good agreement with the reference allowing the distinction between diffuse and focal CAD distributions in most cases. Quantitative evaluation yielded a mean absolute difference in the area under the FFR pullback curve (AUPC) of 1.7. The method may pave the way towards fast, accurate, automatic prediction of FFR along the artery from CCTA.

Three-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamics (3D RHD) simulations of stellar surface convection provide valuable insights into many problems in solar and stellar physics. However, almost all 3D near-surface convection simulations to date are based on solar-scaled chemical compositions, which limit their application on stars with peculiar abundance patterns. To overcome this difficulty, we implement the robust and widely-used FreeEOS equation of state and our Blue opacity package into the Stagger 3D radiation-magnetohydrodynamics code. We present a new 3D RHD model of the solar atmosphere, and demonstrate that the mean stratification as well as the distributions of key physical quantities are in good agreement with those of the latest Stagger solar model atmosphere. The new model is further validated by comparing against solar observations. The new model atmospheres reproduce the observed flux spectrum, continuum centre-to-limb variation, and hydrogen line profiles at a satisfactory level, thereby confirming the realism of the model and the underlying input physics.
