This paper examines the different forms of family capital in the context of parental involvement in children's schooling. This paper has three-fold goals. First, it ascertains the level of parental involvement of Filipino parents as perceived by the parents themselves and their children. Second, it investigates the impacts of various forms of capital on parental involvement. Third, it determines which type of capital will have a significant impact on parental involvement. This paper is based on a survey among elementary and secondary students and their parents of purposively selected 29 elementary and secondary schools in the Philippines. These schools were selected as they were part of a corporate social responsibility project. This paper concludes that parental involvement among parents from low-income households is generally low. Parents are relatively more involved in parenting for education. Results of the multiple regression analysis reveal that membership in CCT (Conditional Cash Transfer), participation in community activities, parent's level of education, and family size predicted parental involvement. The results point to the idea that parents with better social and human capital are likely the ones who will be more involved in their children's education.

This study examines essential factors that affect children' quality of response towards a non-traditional learning platform specifically, self-learning modules (SLMs) as Philippine public school's mode of service-learning delivery. Our objective is to determine the predictive power of access to internet, household food security, and parental involvement on the level of students' engagement in these modular classes amid the health crisis. Drawing online responses from parents of public-school students (n=359), our regression analysis confirms the viability of our model F(3,355) = 19.2, p<0.001. While we found that food security and parental involvement are predictors of students' satisfactory engagement in their SLMs, internet access is not. Therefore, our model suggests that children with parents who take time to be involved in their studies and who reside in households with enough food are more likely to engage positively in their modular classes, whether or not the household has access to the internet.

This paper is an examination of learner readiness to engage in non-traditional modes of schooling, such as online or distance learning, in which the overall interest lies in ensuring the access of Filipino students to quality education even during this pandemic. The specific goal is to gauge and investigate material, psychological, and home environment readiness among incoming and incumbent college students in the Philippines. The findings were drawn from 512 survey respondents whose answers were collected online. Among others, results reveal that majority of our respondents own computer devices and have access to the internet but are not confident about the service integrity of their internet connection. Most respondents also expressed that virtual classes are less motivating due to absence of physical connection to teachers and schoolmates, which could negatively impact the learning experience. They also voiced out reservations on the conduciveness of their home environment for online learning. We argue that it is only through paying attention to learner readiness that decision-makers can safeguard education as an accessible right to all.

Prior to the pandemic, remote learning in the Philippines was not a widely popular mode of teaching and learning. The COVID-19 health crisis, however, turned such modality into a norm. In this context, this study examined the experiences of Filipino teachers caught in the transition from traditional face-to-face interactions to virtual or distance learning. Findings were drawn from 86 teachers from private and public institutions in the Philippines, whose survey responses were collected online. The results indicate that the transition is seen both as an opportunity for professional growth and as a phase of tremendous challenge for discharging teacher duties. The narratives, however, are dominated by the latter. Logistical constraints brought by limited resources, heavier workload, and the anxiety rooted in the quality of online teaching are some of the challenges that arose. We contend that the perceived suddenness of such need for change, as reflected in these narratives, revealed how alien online learning is to teachers in the broader context. We argue further that the challenges in this transition are rooted in decades-long underinvestment in distance learning evidenced by the inadequate information and communication infrastructures in the country. This failure to invest in digital modality may suggest a lack of foresight about the power of technology in streamlining educational processes and improving outcomes under different settings and circumstances.

The article examines the relationship dynamics among families who were uprooted from their traditional communities because of conflict in Marawi City in the southern Philippines. The study specifically explores the areas of family communication, family intimacy, and family conflict domains in households of internally displaced persons (IDPs). Data were drawn from 266 IDP marital couples through an assisted survey. Through statistical comparisons, the study was able to establish that the frequency and quality of communication and intimacy patterns fell while family conflict increased. A t-Test also indicates the decreased trajectory of the quality of familial relationship in displacement compared to prior displacement. These results underpin the fact that war harms family harmony. The study argues that the government, through their social welfare offices, being at the forefront of social care intervention, should consider providing family therapy as a specific assistance to IDPs. More than ensuring a strengthened family bond, the benefit of undergoing family therapy is vital because it may have implications for the pace by which IDP families build back better. Using the United Nations' 'leave no one behind' framework for the achievement of sustainable development goals, this article underscores the key role of geography as one of the core factors why certain people are left behind, deprived, and continue to experience inequality in terms of access to (quality) health care facilities and services. This article specifically examines the consequences of physical inaccessibility to health outcomes and health-seeking behavior in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs) in the Philippines. This article illustrates that physical accessibility is an ignored aspect of the public health paradigm. For that reason, public health facilities, no matter how critical the facility is to a person's care, are not an immediate option for GIDA residents who seek medical aid. Responsive policy measures are vital to address this seemingly paradigmatic error. Subsidizing transportation costs and allocating funds for road improvements are called for, among other changes. The government must act on the people's right to ease of access as part of fulfilling fundamental health-related state obligations. But for the government to act, it will be crucial for claimants to health rights to proactively demand these changes. Internally displaced persons in protracted displacement may not receive optimal social work services. Governments must refrain from implicitly 'ending' displacement and uphold social care policies that really work for the displaced. This article explores the understanding of marine citizenship among young people from two villages (urban and rural) in the Philippines. The purpose of the article is to examine the differences and similarities of their attitudes toward and engagement in marine environment conservation in rural and urban contexts. Young Focus Group Discussion (FGD) participants in both villages are familiar with the concept of marine citizenship. Participants from the island barangay, however, look at the marine environment as a source of identity. Meanwhile, FGD participants from the urban barangay seemed to have a "distant" connection. However, they expressed concerns about the status of marine environment.

The study aims to examine the experiences of pre-marital, non-cohabiting partners while coping with the Covid-19-induced lockdown. With specific focus on sexual intimacies, our interest is to investigate the degree or extent by which the pandemic has constrained people's sexual interests and expressions with the intention to determine whether or not the overall relationship would be negatively affected by the paucity of sexual encounters. Findings drawn from online interviews involving 28 participants reveal that the pandemic has indeed affected sexual intimacy aspirations among partners, with some participants calling these times as "dry season." For this very reason, the pandemic has also emerged as a sexual issue. Further results reveal that partners employ technology-based strategies in order to satisfy their sexual desires during these times when restrictions in movement are in place. Trust, love, communication and understanding serve also to assure partners of the integrity of the relationship. The article examined the perceptions among hosted internally displaced persons (IDPs) of the hosting environment as a social context in which they negotiate their postdisplacement lives. The paper's interest is to identify the emerging social characteristics within these "humanitarian" arrangements and argue that the overall perceived quality of the accommodation is predicated on the socio-economic circumstances of the entire accommodating household. The findings were drawn from face-to-face interviews with 20 ethnic Maranao Filipino Muslims who experienced home-based accommodation courtesy of their kin. Thematic analysis on the narratives revealed three major themes; reasons for choosing home-based accommodation, the burden of shame in being hosted, and the perceptions of animosity held by members of the IDP family. It is reported that while initiative to accommodate comes from the host families themselves, hostile behavior against their IDP relatives may surface later on. This situation may exacerbate the already difficult situations IDPs experience. Without proper orientation and understanding, the study suggests that hosting can become an unpromising arrangement over time and may not form part of durable solutions for the IDPs. Proceeding from the insights of truth-default theory, the article examines the extent by which the human psyche's default assumption of truth contributes to our susceptibility to believe in false online content. This study attempts to trace the cognitive roots of people's online susceptibility to disinformation. The article also investigates the role of fact-checking behavior and belief perseverance to being vulnerable to online disinformation. Data gathered were from 234 survey respondents and 16 participants from two sets of focus group discussion (FGD). All subjects were college students from Manila, Philippines. Regression analysis shows that our assumption of truthfulness and fact-checking behavior are statistically significant predictors of (susceptibility) Facebook disinformation experiences. Among others, the study interestingly found out too that susceptibility to online disinformation is strong among Facebook users when these false online contents are favorable to them. The article aims to examine the spheres which help create positive school climate suitable for the integration of internally displaced children (IDPs). The paper looks at how the experience of IDP children affects their overall school life as perceived by their own teachers. Data from this study were taken from nine (9) elementary school teachers who participated in the focus group discussion (FGD). The participants, all from a particular school in Manila, handled the IDP students as they continued their studies after displacement. Results suggest that the spheres of safety, supportive and inclusive environment have created a positive school climate for the IDP students. The paper argues that school integration of IDP children requires the positive fulfillment of these spheres. Feeling secured, being surrounded with supportive social network, and learning in inclusive environment are all non-negotiable features of a school climate that facilitates successful school integration. The article examines the determinants of return intentions among the Maranao internally displaced persons (IDPs), who had fled the war in Marawi City, Lanao Del Sur, Philippines. The study involved 10 key informant interviewees and 306 survey respondents. The results reveal that an overwhelming majority of the respondents wish to repatriate back home. Analysis shows that place attachment, good memories in relation to profit-making, and cultural identity contribute to the firm desire to return home. The article aims to describe the pandemic experience from the vantage point of the youth. We wish to uncover the thoughts, feelings, and attitudes of the youth while being under the virus- induced lockdown and examine how the whole experience shapes the way they look at the crisis. Our subjects were students of non-health related courses studying in the National Capital Region, Philippines. Findings drawn from 29 written interview participants, whose data were obtained through the internet, reveal that the pandemic is predominantly seen as a disappointing and anxiety-inducing experience. The results also indicate how the pandemic challenged the young people's indifference towards public health prior to the pandemic. Moreover, the magnitude of the crisis stirred them to view the pandemic as something more than just strictly a medical issue. Largely dissatisfied in the way the crisis is being handled, our participants acknowledged that the disease has a socio-political dimension requiring meaningful political solutions. The youth participants remained cognizant of the indispensable part of political actors and institutions in the fight against the disease while not excusing themselves of their very own vital role. The article examines the young Filipino voters' pre-election mindsets, and behavior during the campaign period in the Philippines. The study involved young voters at 17 to 25 age bracket. The respondent students (n=1018) came from different higher institutions in the greater Manila region. Data gathering was conducted two months prior to the May 2019 elections. Among others, results reveal that young Filipino voters are likely to show their support to their preferred candidates among their peers and families than in online communities. It further reveals their desire to increase the quality of campaign activities in the country and their preference to candidates who can communicate their platforms and plans for the country through public discussions and debates. While it appears, based on the results, that young voters actively seek political information on the records or history of aspiring public officials, the results also highlight their high voting independence from the recommendations of their families and religious groups. The young voters' "elastic" voting commitment also is a positive indication of their ability to intelligently discern in the election process. The main objective of the paper is to critically examine and document the living conditions of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from Marawi City. Forcibly displaced more than a year ago due to armed conflict, these IDPs managed to find their way to an unoccupied building in the outskirt of Iligan City, Lanao del Norte Province, Philippines. Results show their range of main concerns such as the supply of electricity and water, health services and medicines and more importantly, food. Disruptions on children's schooling and most especially the discontinuation of their parents' livelihood were also documented. The community is waiting for their "turn" to access better temporary shelters provided by the government. The study utilized key informant interview (KII) among 10 household heads (from among the 75 families living in the building). Their narratives reveal several coping strategies amidst insufficient government assistance and community feeling of isolation, the most glaring of those, is the dependency to social network, capitalizing on the social ties with relatives and friends for assistance. The IDPs admitted however that the same assistance is not enough. Additionally, the reduction of food consumption and selling of food relief packs remain unsustainable in coping with their destitute condition.
