1. Discovery of Magnetically Guided Metal Accretion onto a Polluted White Dwarf

Abstract: Dynamically active planetary systems orbit a significant fraction of white dwarf stars. These stars often exhibit surface metals accreted from debris disks, which are detected through infrared excess or transiting structures. However, the full journey of a planetesimal from star-grazing orbit to final dissolution in the host star is poorly understood. Here, we report the discovery that the cool metal-polluted star WD 0816–310 has cannibalized heavy elements from a planetary body similar in size to Vesta, and where accretion and horizontal mixing processes have clearly been controlled by the stellar magnetic field. Our observations unveil periodic and synchronized variations in metal line strength and magnetic field intensity, implying a correlation between the local surface density of metals and the magnetic field structure. Specifically, the data point to a likely persistent concentration of metals near a magnetic pole. These findings demonstrate that magnetic fields may play a fundamental role in the final stages of exoplanetary bodies that are recycled into their white dwarf hosts.

2. KELT-9 and its ultra-hot Jupiter: stellar parameters, composition, and planetary pollution

Abstract: KELT-9b is an ultra-hot Jupiter observed to be undergoing extreme mass loss. Its A0-type host star has a radiative envelope, which makes its surface layers prone to retaining recently accreted material. To search for potential signs of planetary material polluting the stellar surface, we carry out the most comprehensive chemical characterisation of KELT-9 to-date. New element detections include Na and Y, which had previously been detected in the ultra-hot Jupiter but not studied in the star; these detections complete the set of nine elements measured in both star and planet. In comparing KELT-9 with similar open cluster stars we find no strong anomalies. This finding is consistent with calculations of photospheric pollution accounting for stellar mixing and using observationally estimated KELT-9b mass loss rates. 3. A rare phosphorus-rich star in an eclipsing binary from TESS

Abstract: Context: Few exoplanets around hot stars with radiative envelopes have been discovered, although new observations from the TESS mission are improving this. Stars with radiative envelopes have little mixing at their surface, and thus their surface abundances provide a sensitive test case for a variety of processes including potentially star-planet interactions. Atomic diffusion is particularly important in these envelopes, producing chemically peculiar objects such as Am and HgMn stars. Aims: An exoplanet candidate around the B6 star HD 235349 was identified by TESS. Here we determine the nature of this transiting object and identify possible chemical peculiarities in the star. Methods: HD 235349 was observed using the long-slit spectrograph at Tartu Observatory, as well as photometrically by the TESS mission. The spectra were modeled to determine stellar parameters and chemical abundances. The photometric light curve was then analyzed in the context of the stellar parameters to determine properties of the transiting object. Results: We find the transiting object is a low-mass stellar companion, not a planet. However, the primary of this eclipsing binary is a rare type of chemically peculiar star. A strong overabundance of P is found with overabundances of Ne and Nd, and mild overabundances of Ti and Mn, while He is mildly underabundant. There is also clear evidence for vertical stratification of P in the atmosphere of the star. The lack of Hg and weak Mn overabundance suggests that this is not a typical HgMn star. It may be in the class of helium-weak phosphorus-gallium (He-weak PGa) stars, or an intermediate between these two classes. Conclusions: We show that HD 235349 is a rare type of chemically peculiar star (He-weak PGa) in an eclipsing binary system with a low-mass stellar companion. 4. Mitigating stellar activity jitter with different line lists for least-squares deconvolution: analysis of a parametric and a randomised line selection

Abstract: Stellar activity limits the radial velocity search and characterisation of exoplanets, as it introduces spurious jitter in the data sets and prevents the correct retrieval of a planetary signal. This is key for M dwarfs, considering that they manifest high activity levels and are primary targets for present and future searches of habitable Earth-like planets. Effective filtering of activity is crucial to achieve the sensitivity required for small planet detections. Here, we analyse the impact of selecting different line lists for least-squares deconvolution on the dispersion in our RV data sets, to identify the line list that most effectively reduces the jitter. We employ optical observations of the active M dwarf EV Lac collected with ESPaDOnS and NARVAL, and study two line selection approaches: a parametric one based on line properties and a randomised algorithm that samples the line combination space. We test the latter further to find the line list that singles out the activity signal from other sources of noise, and on AD Leo and DS Leo to examine its consistency at mitigating jitter for different activity levels. The analysis is complemented with planetary injection tests. The parametric selection yields a RV RMS reduction of less than 10%, while the randomised selection a systematic >50% improvement, regardless of the activity level of the star examined. Furthermore, if activity is the dominant source of noise, this approach allows the construction of lists containing mainly activity-sensitive lines, which could be used to enhance the rotational modulation of the resulting data sets and determine the stellar rotation period more robustly. Finally, the output line lists allow the recovery of a synthetic planet (0.3-0.6 MJup on a 10 d orbit) in the presence of both moderate (20 m/s semi-amplitude) and high (200 m/s) activity levels, without affecting the planet signal substantially., 17 pages, 16 figures, 4 tables

Abstract: Young solar analogs reaching the main sequence experience very strong magnetic activity, directly linked to their angular momentum loss through wind and mass ejections. We investigate here the surface and chromospheric activity of the ultra-rapid rotator AP 149 in the young open cluster alpha Persei. With a time-series of spectropolarimetric observations gathered over two nights with ESPaDOnS, we are able to reconstruct the surface distribution of brightness and magnetic field using the Zeeman-Doppler-Imaging (ZDI) method. Using the same data set, we also map the spatial distribution of prominences through tomography of H-alpha emission. We find that AP 149 shows a strong cool spot and magnetic field closed to the polar cap. This star is the first example of a solar-type star to have its magnetic field and prominences mapped together, which will help to explore the respective role of wind and prominences in the angular momentum evolution of the most active stars.

Abstract: The helicity of a magnetic field is a fundamental property that is conserved in ideal MHD. It can be explored in the stellar context by mapping large-scale magnetic fields across stellar surfaces using Zeeman-Doppler imaging. A recent study of 51 stars in the mass range 0.1-1.34 M$_\odot$ showed that the photospheric magnetic helicity density follows a single power law when plotted against the toroidal field energy, but splits into two branches when plotted against the poloidal field energy. These two branches divide stars above and below $\sim$ 0.5 M$_\odot$. We present here a novel method of visualising the helicity density in terms of the linkage of the toroidal and poloidal fields that are mapped across the stellar surface. This approach allows us to classify the field linkages that provide the helicity density for stars of different masses and rotation rates. We find that stars on the lower-mass branch tend to have toroidal fields that are non-axisymmetric and so link through regions of positive and negative poloidal field. A lower-mass star may have the same helicity density as a higher-mass star, despite having a stronger poloidal field. Abstract: Context: Pollux is considered as an archetype of a giant star hosting a planet. We then discovered a weak magnetic field at its surface using spectropolarimetry. Aims and Methods: We followed up our investigations on Pollux first using ESPaDOnS at CFHT and then Narval at TBL to obtain Stokes I and Stokes V spectra to study their variations for a duration of 4.25 years, that is, for more than two periods of about 590 d of the RV variations. We used the least-squares deconvolution (LSD) profiles to measure the longitudinal magnetic field and to perform a Zeeman Doppler imaging (ZDI) investigation. Results: The longitudinal magnetic field of Pollux is found to vary with a sinusoidal behavior and a period similar to that of the RV variations. From the ZDI investigation a rotation period of Pollux is determined to be equal to 660+/-15 days and possibly different than the period of variations of the RV. As to the magnetic topology, the poloidal component is dominant and almost purely dipolar with an inclination of 10.5{\deg} of the dipole with respect to the rotation axis. The mean strength of the surface magnetic field is 0.44 G. Conclusions: As to the origin of the magnetic field of Pollux, we favor the hypothesis that it is maintained through contemporaneous dynamo action. Pollux appears as the representative of a class of slowly rotating and weakly magnetic G-K red giants. To explain the sinusoidal RV variations of Pollux, two scenarios are proposed. If the RV period is different from the rotation period, the observed periodic RV variations are due to the hosted planet and the contribution of Pollux magnetic activity is not significantly detected. In the peculiar case in which the two periods are equal, we cannot discard the possibility that the activity of Pollux could explain the total RV variations and that the planet hypothesis would appear unnecessary., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Abstract: We aim to characterize the magnetospheric accretion process in the young stellar object V807 Tau, one of the most stable dippers revealed by K2 in the Taurus star forming region. We performed photometric and spectropolarimetric follow-up observations of this system with CFHT/ESPaDOnS in order to investigate its variability over several rotational periods. We derive a 4.38 day period from the K2 light curve. This period is also seen in the radial velocity variations, ascribed to spot modulation. The narrow component of the He I 5876 {\AA} line as well as the red wing of the H{\beta} and H{\gamma} line profiles also vary in intensity with the same periodicity. The former traces the accretion shock at the stellar surface, and the latter is a signature of an accretion funnel flow crossing the line of sight. We derive a surface brightness and magnetic field topology from the modeling of Stokes I and V profiles, respectively, for photospheric lines and for the He I line. This reveals a bright spot at the stellar surface, located at a latitude of 60 deg, and a maximum field strength of about 2 kG. The magnetic field topology at the stellar surface is dominated by a dipolar component inclined by about 40 deg onto the spin axis. Despite of its clear and stable dipper behavior, we derive a relatively low inclination of about 50 deg for this system, which calls question the origin of the dips. This low inclination is also consistent with the absence of deep inverse P Cygni components in the line profiles. We conclude that magnetospheric accretion is ongoing in V807 Tau, taking place through non-axisymmetric accretion funnel flows controlled by a strong, tilted, and mainly dipolar magnetic topology. Whether an inner disk warp resulting from this process can account for the dipper character of this source remains to be seen, given the low inclination of the system., Comment: 18 pages, 23 figures, accepted in A&A

Abstract: We investigate the wind of lambda And, a solar-mass star that has evolved off the main sequence becoming a sub-giant. We present spectropolarimetric observations and use them to reconstruct the surface magnetic field of lambda And. Although much older than our Sun, this star exhibits a stronger (reaching up to 83 G) large-scale magnetic field, which is dominated by the poloidal component. To investigate the wind of lambda And, we use the derived magnetic map to simulate two stellar wind scenarios, namely a polytropic wind (thermally-driven) and an Alfven-wave driven wind with turbulent dissipation. From our 3D magnetohydrodynamics simulations, we calculate the wind thermal emission and compare it to previously published radio observations and more recent VLA observations, which we present here. These observations show a basal sub-mJy quiescent flux level at ~5 GHz and, at epochs, a much larger flux density (>37 mJy), likely due to radio flares. By comparing our model results with the radio observations of lambda And, we can constrain its mass-loss rate Mdot. There are two possible conclusions. 1) Assuming the quiescent radio emission originates from the stellar wind, we conclude that lambda And has Mdot ~ 3e-9 Msun/yr, which agrees with the evolving mass-loss rate trend for evolved solar-mass stars. 2) Alternatively, if the quiescent emission does not originate from the wind, our models can only place an upper limit on mass-loss rates, indicating that Mdot, Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract: We report the detection of a large-scale magnetic field at the surface of the slowly-rotating fully-convective M dwarf Proxima Centauri. Ten circular polarization spectra, collected from April to July 2017 with the HARPS-Pol spectropolarimeter, exhibit rotationally-modulated Zeeman signatures suggesting a stellar rotation period of $89.8 \pm 4.0$ d. Using Zeeman-Doppler Imaging, we invert the circular polarization spectra into a surface distribution of the large-scale magnetic field. We find that Proxima Cen hosts a large-scale magnetic field of typical strength 200 G, whose topology is mainly poloidal, and moderately axisymmetric, featuring, in particular, a dipole component of 135 G tilted at 51$^{\circ}$ to the rotation axis. The large-scale magnetic flux is roughly 3 times smaller than the flux measured from the Zeeman broadening of unpolarized lines, which suggests that the underlying dynamo is efficient at generating a magnetic field at the largest spatial scales. Our observations occur $\sim$1 yr after the maximum of the reported 7 yr-activity cycle of Proxima Cen, which opens the door for the first long-term study of how the large-scale field evolves with the magnetic cycle in a fully-convective very-low-mass star. Finally, we find that Proxima Cen's habitable zone planet, Proxima-b, is likely orbiting outside the Alfv\`en surface, where no direct magnetic star-planet interactions occur., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, accepted to MNRAS

Abstract: Young stars interact with their accretion disk through their strong magnetosphere. We investigate the magnetospheric accretion process in the young stellar system DoAr 44. We monitored the system over several rotational cycles, combining high-resolution optical and near-IR spectropolarimetry with long-baseline near-IR interferometry and multicolor photometry. DoAr 44 is a young 1.2 solar mass star, moderately accreting from its disk, and seen at a low inclination. We derive a rotational period of 2.96 d from the system's light curve. Several optical and near-IR line profiles probing the accretion funnel flows and the accretion shock are modulated at the stellar rotation period. The most variable line profile, HeI 1083 nm, exhibits modulated redshifted wings a signature of accretion funnel flows, as well as deep blueshifted absorptions indicative of transient outflows. The Zeeman-Doppler analysis suggests the star hosts a mainly dipolar magnetic field, inclined by about 20 deg. onto the spin axis, with an intensity reaching about 800 G at the photosphere, and up to 2 +/- 0.8 kG close to the accretion shock. The magnetic field appears strong enough to disrupt the inner disk close to the corotation radius, at a distance of about 4.6 stellar radii (0.043 au). This supports the upper limit of 5 stellar radii (0.047 au) we derived for the size of the magnetosphere from long baseline interferometry. DoAr 44 is a pre-transitional disk system, exhibiting a 25-30 au gap in its circumstellar disk, with the inner and outer disks being misaligned. On a scale of 0.1 au or less, our results indicate that the system steadily accretes from its inner disk through its tilted dipolar magnetosphere. We conclude that in spite of a highly structured outer disk, perhaps the signature of ongoing planetary formation, the magnetospheric accretion process proceeds unimpeded at the star-disk interaction level., Comment: 18 pages, 22 figures, Astronomy & Astrophysics, in press

Abstract: SPIRou is the newest spectropolarimeter and high-precision velocimeter that has recently been installed at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope on Maunakea, Hawaii. It operates in the near-infrared and simultaneously covers the 0.98–2.35 μm domain at high spectral resolution. SPIRou is optimized for exoplanet search and characterization with the radial-velocity technique, and for polarization measurements in stellar lines and subsequent magnetic field studies. The host of the transiting hot Jupiter HD 189733 b has been observed during early science runs. We present the first near-infrared spectropolarimetric observations of the planet-hosting star as well as the stellar radial velocities as measured by SPIRou throughout the planetary orbit and two transit sequences. The planetary orbit and Rossiter-McLaughlin anomaly are both investigated and modeled. The orbital parameters and obliquity are all compatible with the values found in the optical. The obtained radial-velocity precision is compatible with about twice the photon-noise estimates for a K2 star under these conditions. The additional scatter around the orbit, of about 8 m s−1, agrees with previous results that showed that the activity-induced scatter is the dominant factor. We analyzed the polarimetric signal, Zeeman broadening, and chromospheric activity tracers such as the 1083nm HeI and the 1282nm Paβ lines to investigate stellar activity. First estimates of the average unsigned magnetic flux from the Zeeman broadening of the FeI lines give a magnetic flux of 290 ± 58 G, and the large-scale longitudinal field shows typical values of a few Gauss. These observations illustrate the potential of SPIRou for exoplanet characterization and magnetic and stellar activity studies.

Abstract: We present a spectropolarimetric magnetic snapshot survey of 55 stars which includes 53 F-type stars ranging from spectral types F0 to F9 plus 2 chemically peculiar stars β CrB, and δ Cap. We look for magnetic fields in stars spanning a range of effective temperatures where the transition from fossil to dynamo magnetic fields is believed to occur. High-resolution spectropolarimetry using circularly polarized spectra is used to look for a magnetic detection in the Stokes V profile, determine the mean longitudinal magnetic field (Bl), and to look for correlations with stellar parameters. Surface magnetic fields are detected on 14 F-stars, and present in every spectral class from F3V-F9V ranging in strength from 0.3 ± 0.1 G (36 UMa, F8V) to 8.3 ± 0.9 G (h Dra, F8V). Thus we find photospheric magnetic fields are present in stars as early as spectral type F3V with an outer convection zone thickness less than a few per cent of the stellar radius.

Abstract: Helicity is a fundamental property of a magnetic field but to date it has only been possible to observe its evolution in one star - the Sun. In this paper we provide a simple technique for mapping the large-scale helicity density across the surface of any star using only observable quantities: the poloidal and toroidal magnetic field components (which can be determined from Zeeman-Doppler imaging) and the stellar radius. We use a sample of 51 stars across a mass range of 0.1-1.34 M$_\odot$ to show how the helicity density relates to stellar mass, Rossby number, magnetic energy and age. We find that the large-scale helicity density increases with decreasing Rossby number $R_o$, peaking at $R_o \simeq 0.1$, with a saturation or decrease below that. For both fully- and partially-convective stars we find that the mean absolute helicity density scales with the mean squared toroidal magnetic flux density according to the power law: $|\langle{h\,}\rangle|$ $\propto$ $\langle{\rm{B_{tor}}^2_{}\,\rangle}^{0.86\,\pm\,0.04}$. The scatter in this relation is consistent with the variation across a solar cycle, which we compute using simulations and observations across solar cycles 23 and 24 respectively. Abstract: Context. Classical T Tauri stars (cTTs) are pre-main sequence stars surrounded by an accretion disk. They host a strong magnetic field, and both magnetospheric accretion and ejection processes develop as the young magnetic star interacts with its disk. Studying this interaction is a major goal toward understanding the properties of young stars and their evolution. Aims. The goal of this study is to investigate the accretion process in the young stellar system HQ Tau, an intermediate-mass T Tauri star (1.9 M$_{\odot}$). Methods. The time variability of the system is investigated both photometrically, using Kepler-K2 and complementary light curves, and from a high-resolution spectropolarimetric time series obtained with ESPaDOnS at CFHT. Results. The quasi-sinusoidal Kepler-K2 light curve exhibits a period of 2.424 d, which we ascribe to the rotational period of the star. The radial velocity of the system shows the same periodicity, as expected from the modulation of the photospheric line profiles by surface spots. A similar period is found in the red wing of several emission lines (e.g., HI, CaII, NaI), due to the appearance of inverse P Cygni components, indicative of accretion funnel flows. Signatures of outflows are also seen in the line profiles, some being periodic, others transient. The polarimetric analysis indicates a complex, moderately strong magnetic field which is possibly sufficient to truncate the inner disk close to the corotation radius, r$_{cor}$ $\sim$3.5 R$_{\star}$. Additionally, we report HQ Tau to be a spectroscopic binary candidate whose orbit remains to be determined. Conclusions. The results of this study expand upon those previously reported for low-mass T Tauri stars, as they indicate that the magnetospheric accretion process may still operate in intermediate-mass pre-main sequence stars, such as HQ Tau., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures, accepted in A&A

Abstract: Alhena A ($\gamma$ Gem A) is a bright Am star, with the strongest disc-integrated magnetic field strength reported so far for an Am star. Its spectrum exhibits standard circularly polarized Zeeman signatures, contrary to all previously studied Am stars that display abnormal signatures dominated by a single-signed lobe. We present here the result of follow-up observations of Alhena, using very high signal-to-noise spectropolarimetric data obtained over 25 observing nights with NARVAL at T\'elescope Bernard Lyot, in the frame of the BRITE (BRIght Target Explorer) spectropolarimetric survey. We confirm that Alhena A is magnetic and we determine its surface magnetic properties using different methods. Inclined dipole models are used to reproduce the longitudinal field measurements, as well as the Stokes V line profiles themselves. In both cases, the model is consistent with a polar field strength of $\sim$ 30 G. This is confirmed by a Zeeman-Doppler Imaging (ZDI) model, which also unveils smaller scale magnetic structures. A rotational period of 8.975 days was identified using intensity line profile variations. The ZDI inversion suggests that the surface magnetic field is sheared by differential rotation, with a difference in rotation rate between high and low latitudes at about 15\% of the solar value. Abstract: Context. The origin of the fossil magnetic fields detected in 5 to 10% of intermediate-mass main sequence stars is still highly debated. Aims. We want to bring observational constraints to a large population of intermediate-mass pre-main sequence (PMS) stars in order to test the theory that convective-dynamo fields generated during the PMS phases of stellar evolution can occasionally relax into fossil fields on the main sequence. Methods. Using distance estimations, photometric measurements, and spectropolarimetric data from HARPSpol and ESPaDOnS of 38 intermediate-mass PMS stars, we determined fundamental stellar parameters (Teff, L and v sin i) and measured surface magnetic field characteristics (including detection limits for non-detections, and longitudinal fields and basic topologies for positive detections). Using PMS evolutionary models, we determined the mass, radius, and internal structure of these stars. We compared different PMS models to check that our determinations were not model-dependant. We then compared the magnetic characteristics of our sample accounting for their stellar parameters and internal structures. Results. We detect magnetic fields in about half of our sample. About 90% of the magnetic stars have outer convective envelopes larger than ~25% of the stellar radii, and heavier than ~2% of the stellar mass. Going to higher mass, we find that the magnetic incidence in intermediate-mass stars drops very quickly, within a time-scale of the order of few times 0.1 Myr. Finally, we propose that intermediate-mass T Tauri stars with large convective envelopes, close to the fully convective limit, have complex fields and that their dipole component strengths may decrease as the sizes of their convective envelopes decrease, similar to lower-mass T Tauri stars., accepted by A&A

Abstract: Main sequence low-mass stars are known to spin-down as a consequence of their magnetised stellar winds. However, estimating the precise rate of this spin-down is an open problem. The mass-loss rate, angular momentum-loss rate and the magnetic field properties of low-mass stars are fundamentally linked making this a challenging task. Of particular interest is the stellar magnetic field geometry. In this work, we consider whether non-dipolar field modes contribute significantly to the spin-down of low-mass stars. We do this using a sample of stars that have all been previously mapped with Zeeman-Doppler imaging. For a given star, as long as its mass-loss rate is below some critical mass-loss rate, only the dipolar fields contribute to its spin-down torque. However, if it has a larger mass-loss rate, higher order modes need to be considered. For each star, we calculate this critical mass-loss rate, which is a simple function of the field geometry. Additionally, we use two methods of estimating mass-loss rates for our sample of stars. In the majority of cases, we find that the estimated mass-loss rates do not exceed the critical mass-loss rate and hence, the dipolar magnetic field alone is sufficient to determine the spin-down torque. Abstract: Context. 55 Cancri hosts five known exoplanets, most notably the hot super-Earth 55 Cnc e, which is one of the hottest known transiting super-Earths. Aims. Due to the short orbital separation and host star brightness, 55 Cnc e provides one of the best opportunities for studying star-planet interactions (SPIs). We aim to understand possible SPIs in this system, which requires a detailed understanding of the stellar magnetic field and wind impinging on the planet. Methods. Using spectropolarimetric observations, and Zeeman Doppler Imaging, we derive a map of the large-scale stellar magnetic field. We then simulate the stellar wind starting from the magnetic field map, using a 3D MHD model. Results. The map of the large-scale stellar magnetic field we derive has an average strength of 3.4 G. The field has a mostly dipolar geometry, with the dipole tilted by 90 degrees with respect to the rotation axis, and dipolar strength of 5.8 G at the magnetic pole. The wind simulations based on this magnetic geometry lead us to conclude that 55 Cnc e orbits inside the Alfv\'en surface of the stellar wind, implying that effects from the planet on the wind can propagate back to the stellar surface and result in SPI., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 6 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: It was recently claimed that the magnetic O-type star HD 54879 exhibits important radial velocity variability indicative of its presence in a spectroscopic binary. More remarkably, it was furthermore reported that the star underwent a short, sudden variation in spectral type and magnetic field. Abstract: Magnetic activity and rotation are known to be intimately linked for low-mass stars. Understanding rotation evolution over the stellar lifetime is therefore an important goal within stellar astrophysics. In recent years, there has been increased focus on how the complexity of the stellar magnetic field affects the rate of angular momentum-loss from a star. This is a topic that Zeeman-Doppler imaging (ZDI), a technique that is capable of reconstructing the large-scale magnetic field topology of a star, can uniquely address. Using a potential field source surface model, we estimate the open flux, mass loss-rate and angular momentum-loss rates for a sample of 66 stars that have been mapped with ZDI. We show that the open flux of a star is predominantly determined by the dipolar component of its magnetic field for our choice of source surface radius. We also show that, on the main sequence, the open flux, mass- and angular momentum-loss rates increase with decreasing Rossby number. The exception to this rule is stars less massive than $0.3M_{\odot}$. Previous work suggests that low mass M dwarfs may possess either strong, ordered and dipolar fields or weak and complex fields. This range of field strengths results in a large spread of angular momentum-loss rates for these stars and has important consequences for their spin down behaviour. Abstract: Among the solar proxies, κ1 Cet, stands out as potentially having a mass very close to solar and a young age. We report magnetic field measurements and planetary habitability consequences around this star, a proxy of the young Sun when life arose on Earth. Magnetic strength was determined from spectropolarimetric observations and we reconstruct the large-scale surface magnetic field to derive the magnetic environment, stellar winds, and particle flux permeating the interplanetary medium around κ1 Cet. Our results show a closer magnetosphere and mass-loss rate 50 times larger than the current solar wind mass-loss rate when Life arose on Earth, resulting in a larger interaction via space weather disturbances between the stellar wind and a hypothetical young-Earth analogue, potentially affecting the habitability. Interaction of the wind from the young Sun with the planetary ancient magnetic field may have affected the young Earth and its life conditions.

Abstract: The MiMeS project is a large-scale, high resolution, sensitive spectropolarimetric investigation of the magnetic properties of O and early B type stars. Initiated in 2008 and completed in 2013, the project was supported by 3 Large Program allocations, as well as various programs initiated by independent PIs and archival resources. Ultimately, over 4800 circularly polarized spectra of 560 O and B stars were collected with the instruments ESPaDOnS at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, Narval at the T\'elescope Bernard Lyot, and HARPSpol at the European Southern Observatory La Silla 3.6m telescope, making MiMeS by far the largest systematic investigation of massive star magnetism ever undertaken. In this paper, the first in a series reporting the general results of the survey, we introduce the scientific motivation and goals, describe the sample of targets, review the instrumentation and observational techniques used, explain the exposure time calculation designed to provide sensitivity to surface dipole fields above approximately 100 G, discuss the polarimetric performance, stability and uncertainty of the instrumentation, and summarize the previous and forthcoming publications., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

Abstract: Alfv\'en-wave-driven 3D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models, which are increasingly used to predict stellar wind properties, contain unconstrained parameters and rely on low-resolution stellar magnetograms. We explore the effects of the input Alfv\'en wave energy flux and the surface magnetogram on the wind properties predicted by the Alfv\'en Wave Solar Model (AWSoM). We lowered the resolution of two solar magnetograms during solar cycle maximum and minimum using spherical harmonic decomposition. The Alfv\'en wave energy was altered based on non-thermal velocities determined from a far ultraviolet (FUV) spectrum of the solar twin 18 Sco. Additionally, low-resolution magnetograms of three solar analogues were obtained using Zeeman Doppler imaging (ZDI). Finally, the simulated wind properties were compared to Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) observations. AWSoM simulations using well constrained input parameters taken from solar observations can reproduce the observed solar wind mass and angular momentum loss rates. The resolution of the magnetogram has a small impact on the wind properties and only during cycle maximum. However, variation in Alfv\'en wave energy influences the wind properties irrespective of the solar cycle activity level. Furthermore, solar wind simulations carried out using the low-resolution magnetogram of the three stars instead of the solar magnetogram could lead to an order of a magnitude difference in the simulated wind properties. The choice in Alfv\'en energy has a stronger influence on the wind output compared to the magnetogram resolution. The influence could be even stronger for stars whose input boundary conditions are not as well constrained as those of the Sun. Unsurprisingly, replacing the solar magnetogram with a stellar magnetogram could lead to completely inaccurate solar wind properties, and should be avoided in solar and stellar wind simulations., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract: We present a detailed analysis of high-resolution spectropolarimetric observations of the weak-line T Tauri stars (wTTSs) TWA 9A and V1095 Sco as part of a wider sur- vey of magnetic properties and activity in weak-line T Tauri stars, called MaTYSSE (Magnetic Topologies of Young Stars and the Survival of close-in giant Exoplanets). Our targets have similar masses but differing ages which span the stage of radiative core formation in solar-mass stars. We use the intensity line profiles to reconstruct surface brightness maps for both stars. The reconstructed brightness maps for TWA 9A and V1095 Sco were used to model and subtract the activity-induced jitter, reducing the RMS in the radial velocity measurements of TWA 9A by a factor of $\sim$7, and for V1095 Sco by a factor of $\sim$3. We detect significant circular polarisation for both stars, but only acquired a high quality circular polarisation time-series for TWA 9A. Our reconstructed large-scale magnetic field distribution of TWA 9A indicates a strong, non-axisymmetric field. We also analyse the chromospheric activity of both stars by investigating their H$\alpha$ emission, finding excess blue-ward emission for most observations of V1095 Sco, and symmetric, double-peaked emission for TWA 9A, with enhanced emission at one epoch likely indicating a flaring event., Comment: 14 Pages, 17 Figures. Abstract: In this work, we simulate the evolution of the solar wind along its main sequence lifetime and compute its thermal radio emission. To study the evolution of the solar wind, we use a sample of solar mass stars at different ages. All these stars have observationally-reconstructed magnetic maps, which are incorporated in our 3D magnetohydrodynamic simulations of their winds. We show that angular-momentum loss and mass-loss rates decrease steadily on evolutionary timescales, although they can vary in a magnetic cycle timescale. Stellar winds are known to emit radiation in the form of thermal bremsstrahlung in the radio spectrum. To calculate the expected radio fluxes from these winds, we solve the radiative transfer equation numerically from first principles. We compute continuum spectra across the frequency range 100 MHz - 100 GHz and find maximum radio flux densities ranging from 0.05 - 8.3 $\mu$Jy. At a frequency of 1 GHz and a normalised distance of d = 10 pc, the radio flux density follows 0.24 $(\Omega/\Omega_{\odot})^{0.9}$ (d/[10pc])$^2$ $\mu$Jy, where $\Omega$ is the rotation rate. This means that the best candidates for stellar wind observations in the radio regime are faster rotators within distances of 10 pc, such as $\kappa^1$ Ceti (2.83 $\mu$Jy) and $\chi^1$ Ori (8.3 $\mu$Jy). Abstract: The rotational braking of magnetic stars through the extraction of angular momentum by stellar winds has been studied for decades, leading to several formulations. We recently demonstrated that the dependency of the braking law on the coronal magnetic field topology can be taken into account through a simple scalar parameter: the open magnetic flux. The Zeeman-Doppler Imaging technique has brought the community a reliable and precise description of the surface magnetic field of distant stars. The coronal structure can then be reconstructed using a potential field extrapolation, a technique that relies on a source surface radius beyond which all field lines are open, thus avoiding a computationally expensive MHD simulations. We developed a methodology to choose the best source surface radius in order to estimate open flux and magnetic torques. We apply this methodology to five K-type stars from 25 to 584 Myr and the Sun, and compare the resulting torque to values expected from spin evolution models.

Abstract: We analyze a high resolution spectropolarimetric dataset collected for the He-weak B3p IV star HR 2949. The Zeeman effect is visible in the circularly polarized component of numerous spectral lines. The longitudinal magnetic field varies between approximately $-650$ and $+150$ G. The polar strength of the surface magnetic dipole is calculated to be 2.4$^{+0.3}_{-0.2}$ kG. The star has strong overabundances of Fe-peak elements, along with extremely strong overabundances of rare-earth elements; however, He, Al, and S are underabundant. This implies that HR 2949 is a chemically peculiar star. Variability is seen in all photospheric lines, likely due to abundance patches as seen in many Ap/Bp stars. Longitudinal magnetic field variations measured from different spectral lines yield different results, likely a consequence of uneven sampling of the photospheric magnetic field by the abundance patches. Analysis of photometric and spectroscopic data for both HR 2949 and its companion star, HR 2948, suggests a revision of HR 2949's fundamental parameters: in particular, it is somewhat larger, hotter, and more luminous than previously believed. There is no evidence of optical or ultraviolet emission originating in HR 2949's magnetosphere, despite its moderately strong magnetic field and relatively rapid rotation; however, when calculated using theoretical and empirical boundaries on the initial rotational velocity, the spindown age is compatible with the stellar age. Abstract: Spectral signatures of surface spots were recently discovered from high cadence observations of the A star Vega. We aim at constraining the surface distribution of these photospheric inhomogeneities, and investigating a possible short term evolution of the spot pattern. Using data collected over five consecutive nights, we employ the Doppler Imaging method to reconstruct three different maps of the stellar surface, from three consecutive subsets of the whole time-series. The surface maps display a complex distribution of dark and bright spots, covering most of the visible fraction of the stellar surface. A number of surface features are consistently recovered in all three maps, but other features seem to evolve over the time span of observations, suggesting that fast changes can affect the surface of Vega within a few days at most. The short-term evolution is observed as emergence or disappearance of individual spots, and may also show up as zonal flows, with low-latitude and high latitude belts rotating faster than intermediate latitudes. Abstract: Magnetic activity is known to be correlated to the rotation period for moderately active main sequence solar-like stars. In turn, the stellar rotation period evolves as a result of magnetised stellar winds that carry away angular momentum. Understanding the interplay between magnetic activity and stellar rotation is therefore a central task for stellar astrophysics. Angular momentum evolution models typically employ spin-down torques that are formulated in terms of the surface magnetic field strength. However, these formulations fail to account for the magnetic field geometry, unlike those that are expressed in terms of the open flux, i.e. the magnetic flux along which stellar winds flow. In this work, we model the angular momentum evolution of main sequence solar-mass stars using a torque law formulated in terms of the open flux. This is done using a potential field source surface model in conjunction with the Zeeman-Doppler magnetograms of a sample of roughly solar-mass stars. We explore how the open flux of these stars varies with stellar rotation and choice of source surface radii. We also explore the effect of field geometry by using two methods of determining the open flux. The first method only accounts for the dipole component while the second accounts for the full set of spherical harmonics available in the Zeeman-Doppler magnetogram. We find only a small difference between the two methods, demonstrating that the open flux, and indeed the spin-down, of main sequence solar-mass stars is likely dominated by the dipolar component of the magnetic field., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, accepted to MNRAS

Abstract: There is a large change in surface rotation rates of sun-like stars on the pre-main sequence and early main sequence. Since these stars have dynamo driven magnetic fields, this implies a strong evolution of their magnetic properties over this time period. The spin-down of these stars is controlled by interactions between stellar winds and magnetic fields, thus magnetic evolution in turn plays an important role in rotational evolution. We present here the second part of a study investigating the evolution of large-scale surface magnetic fields in this critical time period. We observed stars in open clusters and stellar associations with known ages between 120 and 650 Myr, and used spectropolarimetry and Zeeman Doppler Imaging to characterize their large-scale magnetic field strength and geometry. We report 15 stars with magnetic detections here. These stars have masses from 0.8 to 0.95 Msun, rotation periods from 0.326 to 10.6 days, and we find large-scale magnetic field strengths from 8.5 to 195 G with a wide range of geometries. We find a clear trend towards decreasing magnetic field strength with age, and a power-law decrease in magnetic field strength with Rossby number. There is some tentative evidence for saturation of the large-scale magnetic field strength at Rossby numbers below 0.1, although the saturation point is not yet well defined. Comparing to younger classical T Tauri stars, we support the hypothesis that differences in internal structure produce large differences in observed magnetic fields, however for weak lined T Tauri stars this is less clear., Comment: 35 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

33. A search for weak or complex magnetic fields in the B3V star Herculis

Abstract: We obtained 128 high signal-to-noise ratio Stokes $V$ spectra of the B3V star $\iota$~Her on 5 consecutive nights in 2012 with the ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, with the aim of searching for the presence of weak and/or complex magnetic fields. Least-Squares Deconvolution mean profiles were computed from individual spectra, averaged over individual nights and over the entire run. No Zeeman signatures are detected in any of the profiles. The longitudinal magnetic field in the grand average profile was measured to be $-0.24 \pm 0.32 $ G, as compared to $-0.22 \pm 0.32$ G in the null profile. Our observations therefore provide no evidence for the presence of Zeeman signatures analogous to those observed in the A0V star Vega by Lignieres et al. (2009). We interpret these observations in three ways. First, we compare the LSD profiles with synthetic Stokes $V$ profiles corresponding to organised (dipolar) magnetic fields, for which we find an upper limit of about 8~G on the polar strength of any surface dipole present. Secondly, we compare the grand average profile with calculations corresponding to the random magnetic spot topologies of Kochukhov & Sudnik (2013), inferring that spots, if present, of 2 degrees radius with strengths of 2-4 G and a filling factor of 50% should have been detected in our data. Finally, we compare the observations with synthetic $V$ profiles corresponding to the surface magnetic maps of Vega (Petit et al. 2010) computed for the spectral characteristics of $\iota$ Her. We conclude that while it is unlikely we would have detected a magnetic field identical to Vega's, we would have likely detected one with a peak strength of about 30 G, i.e. approximately four times as strong as that of Vega.

However, it is not clear at what point in a star's evolution those peculiarities develop. Strong magnetic fields have been observed in pre-main sequence A and B stars (Herbig Ae and Be stars), and these objects have been proposed to be the progenitors of Ap and Bp stars. However, the photospheric chemical abundances of these magnetic Herbig stars have not been studied carefully, and furthermore the chemical abundances of 'normal' non-magnetic Herbig stars remain poorly characterized. To investigate this issue, we have studied the photospheric compositions of 23 Herbig stars, four of which have confirmed magnetic fields. Surprisingly, we found that half the non-magnetic stars in our sample show lambda Bootis chemical peculiarities to varying degrees. For the stars with detected magnetic fields, we find one chemically normal star, one star with lambda Boo peculiarities, one star displaying weak Ap/Bp peculiarities, and one somewhat more evolved star with somewhat stronger Ap/Bp peculiarities. These results suggests that Ap/Bp peculiarities are preceded by magnetic fields, and that these peculiarities develop over the pre-main sequence lives of A and B stars. The incidence of lambda Boo stars we find is much higher than that seen on the main sequence. Abstract: HD 98088 is a synchronised, double-lined spectroscopic binary system with a magnetic Ap primary component and an Am secondary component. We study this rare system using high-resolution MuSiCoS spectropolarimetric data, to gain insight into the effect of binarity on the origin of stellar magnetism and the formation of chemical peculiarities in A-type stars. Using a new collection of 29 high-resolution Stokes VQU spectra we re-derive the orbital and stellar physical parameters and conduct the first disentangling of spectroscopic observations of the system to conduct spectral analysis of the individual stellar components. From this analysis we determine the projected rotational velocities of the stars and conduct a detailed chemical abundance analysis of each component using both the SYNTH3 and ZEEMAN spectrum synthesis codes. The surface abundances of the primary component are typical of a cool Ap star, while those of the secondary component are typical of an Am star. We present the first magnetic analysis of both components using modern data. Using Least-Squares Deconvolution, we extract the longitudinal magnetic field strength of the primary component, which is observed to vary between +1170 and -920 G with a period consistent with the orbital period. There is no field detected in the secondary component. Abstract: Strong photospheric chemical peculiarities are observed in a significant fraction of main sequence stars from B to early F spectral types. The development of these chemical peculiarities is understood in the framework of atomic diffusion. However, the details leading from this theoretical framework to the diversity of observed surface abundance characteristics, particularly the impact of competing processes, are not fully understood. In the chemically peculiar Am and HgMn stars, binarity appears to be a basic ingredient providing the conditions necessary for these peculiarities to develop. In contrast, the magnetic chemically peculiar Ap and Bp stars appear to be anomalously rare in short period binary systems. This likely provides a clue to the origin of the magnetic fields in Ap and Bp stars.

38. Superradially expanding flux tubes of young star's coronae

Abstract: We discuss the reasons for extremely high wind speed observed in 3D MHD simulations of fast rotating young stars with intense magnetic fields. We find that superradially expanding flux tubes in latitude and in longitude are responsible for a significant acceleration in our simulations. We extend here the analysis presented in Reville et al. (2016) thanks to an analytical model introduced by Kopp & Holzer (1976). We find that the expansion factor observed in the simulations is coherent with the fastest speeds we observe. This phenomena needs to be accounted for to model speed distribution of young stars' winds.

Abstract: We report magnetic field measurements for Kappa1~Cet, a proxy of the young Sun when life arose on Earth. We carry out an analysis of the magnetic properties determined from spectropolarimetric observations and reconstruct its large-scale surface magnetic field to derive the magnetic environment, stellar winds and particle flux permeating the interplanetary medium around Kappa1~Cet. Our results show a closer magnetosphere and mass-loss rate of Mdot = 9.7 x 10^{-13} Msol/yr, i.e., a factor 50 times larger than the current solar wind mass-loss rate, resulting in a larger interaction via space weather disturbances between the stellar wind and a hypothetical young-Earth analogue, potentially affecting the planet's habitability. Abstract: International audience; Context. An extremely weak circularly polarized signature was recently discovered in spectral lines of the chemically peculiar Am star Sirius A. A weak surface magnetic field was proposed to account for the observed polarized signal, but the shape of the phase-averaged signature, dominated by a prominent positive lobe, is not expected in the standard theory of the Zeeman effect.Aims: We aim at verifying the presence of weak circularly polarized signatures in two other bright Am stars, β UMa and θ Leo, and investigating the physical origin of Sirius-like polarized signals further.Methods: We present here a set of deep spectropolarimetric observations of β UMa and θ Leo, observed with the NARVAL spectropolarimeter. We analyzed all spectra with the least squares deconvolution multiline procedure. To improve the signal-to-noise ratio and detect extremely weak signatures in Stokes V profiles, we co-added all available spectra of each star (around 150 observations each time). Finally, we ran several tests to evaluate whether the detected signatures are consistent with the behavior expected from the Zeeman effect.Results: The line profiles of the two stars display circularly polarized signatures similar in shape and amplitude to the observations previously gathered for Sirius A. Our series of tests brings further evidence of a magnetic origin of the recorded signal.Conclusions: These new detections suggest that very weak magnetic fields may well be present in the photospheres of a significant fraction of intermediate-mass stars. The strongly asymmetric Zeeman signatures measured so far in Am stars (featuring a dominant single-sign lobe) are not expected in the standard theory of the Zeeman effect and may be linked to sharp vertical gradients in photospheric velocities and magnetic field strengths.

Abstract: The composition of planetary solids and gases is largely rooted in the processing of volatile elements in protoplanetary disks. To shed light on the key processes, we carry out a comparative analysis of the gas-phase carbon abundance in two systems with a similar age and disk mass, but different central stars: HD 100546 and TW Hya. We combine our recent detections of C$^{0}$ in these disks with observations of other carbon reservoirs (CO, C$^{+}$, C$_{2}$H) and gas mass and warm gas tracers (HD, O$^{0}$), as well as spatially resolved ALMA observations and the spectral energy distribution. The disks are modelled with the DALI 2D physical-chemical code. Stellar abundances for HD 100546 are derived from archival spectra. Upper limits on HD emission from HD 100546 place an upper limit on the total disk mass of $\leq0.1\,M_{\odot}$. The gas-phase carbon abundance in the atmosphere of this warm Herbig disk is at most moderately depleted compared to the interstellar medium, with [C]/[H]$_{\rm gas}=(0.1-1.5)\times 10^{-4}$. HD 100546 itself is a $\lambda\,$Bo\"{o}tis star, with solar abundances of C and O but a strong depletion of rock-forming elements. In the gas of the T Tauri disk TW Hya, both C and O are strongly underabundant, with [C]/[H]$_{\rm gas}=(0.2-5.0)\times 10^{-6}$ and C/O${>}1$. We discuss evidence that the gas-phase C and O abundances are high in the warm inner regions of both disks. Our analytical model, including vertical mixing and a grain size distribution, reproduces the observed [C]/[H]$_{\rm gas}$ in the outer disk of TW Hya and allows to make predictions for other systems., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract: Young and rapidly rotating stars are known for intense, dynamo generated magnetic fields. Spectropolarimetric observations of those stars in precisely aged clusters are key input for gyrochronology and magnetochronology. We use ZDI maps of several young K-type stars of similar mass and radius but with various ages and rotational periods, to perform 3D numerical MHD simulations of their coronae and follow the evolution of their magnetic properties with age. Those simulations yield the coronal structure as well as the instant torque exerted by the magnetized, rotating wind on the star. As stars get older, we find that the angular momentum loss decreases with $\Omega^3$, which is the reason for the convergence on the Skumanich law. For the youngest stars of our sample, the angular momentum loss show signs of saturation around $8\Omega_{\odot}$, which is a common value used in spin evolution models for K-type stars. We compare these results to semi-analytical models and existing braking laws. We observe a complex wind speed distribution for the youngest stars with slow, intermediate and fast wind components, which are the result of the interaction with intense and non axisymmetric magnetic fields. Consequently, in our simulations, the stellar wind structure in the equatorial plane of young stars varies significantly from a solar configuration, delivering insight about the past of the solar system interplanetary medium., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, published in the Astrophysical Journal (update)

Abstract: The surface rotation rates of young solar-type stars vary rapidly with age from the end of the pre-main sequence through the early main sequence. Important changes in the dynamos operating in these stars may result from this evolution, which should be observable in their surface magnetic fields. Here we present a study aimed at observing the evolution of these magnetic fields through this critical time period. We observed stars in open clusters and stellar associations of known ages, and used Zeeman Doppler Imaging to characterize their complex magnetic large-scale fields. Presented here are results for 15 stars, from 5 associations, with ages from 20 to 250 Myr, masses from 0.7 to 1.2 solar masses, and rotation periods from 0.4 to 6 days. We find complex large-scale magnetic field geometries, with global average strengths from 14 to 140 G. There is a clear trend towards decreasing average large-scale magnetic field strength with age, and a tight correlation between magnetic field strength and Rossby number. Comparing the magnetic properties of our zero-age main sequence sample to those of both younger and older stars, it appears that the magnetic evolution of solar-type stars during the pre-main sequence is primarily driven by structural changes, while it closely follows the stars' rotational evolution on the main sequence., 31 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract: In this paper we describe and evaluate new spectral line polarisation observations obtained with the goal of mapping the surfaces of magnetic Ap stars in great detail. One hundred complete or partial Stokes IQUV sequences, corresponding to 297 individual polarised spectra, have been obtained for 7 bright Ap stars using the ESPaDOnS and NARVAL spectropolarimeters. The targets span a range of mass from approximately 1.8 to 3.4 solar mass, a range of rotation period from 2.56 to 6.80 days, and a range of maximum longitudinal magnetic field strength from 0.3 to over 4 kG. For 3 of the 7 stars, we have obtained dense phase coverage sampling the entire rotational cycle. These datasets are suitable for immediate magnetic and chemical abundance surface mapping using Magnetic Doppler Imaging (MDI). For the 4 remaining stars, partial phase coverage has been obtained, and additional observations will be required in order to map the surfaces of these stars. The median signal-to-noise ratio of the reduced observations is over 700 per 1.8 km\s pixel. Spectra of all stars show Stokes V Zeeman signatures in essentially all individual lines, and most stars show clear Stokes QU signatures in many individual spectral lines. The observations provide a vastly improved data set compared to previous generations of observations in terms of signal-to-noise ratio, resolving power and measurement uncertainties. Measurement of the longitudinal magnetic field demonstrates that the data are internally consistent within computed uncertainties typically at the 50 to 100 sigma level. Data are also shown to be in excellent agreement with published observations and in qualitative agreement with the predictions of published surface structure models. This study establishes the performance and stability of the ESPaDOnS and NARVAL high-resolution spectropolarimeters during the period 2006-2010.

Abstract: Within the context of a large project aimed at studying early F-, A- and late B-type stars we present the abundance analysis of the photospheres of 21 members of the open cluster NGC 5460, an intermediate age cluster (logt ~ 8.2) previously unstudied with spectroscopy. Our study is based on medium and high resolution spectra obtained with the FLAMES instrument of the ESO/VLT. We show that cluster members have a nearly solar metallicity, and that there is evidence that the abundances of magnesium and iron are correlated with the effective temperature, exhibiting a maximum around Teff=10500 K. No correlations are found between abundances and projected equatorial velocity, except for marginal evidence of barium being more abundant in slower than in faster rotating stars. We discovered two He-weak stars, and a binary system where the hotter component is a HgMn star. We provide new estimates for the cluster distance (720 +/- 50 pc), age (logt = 8.2 +/- 0.1), and mean radial velocity (-17.9 +/- 5.2 km/s).

Abstract: AR Aur is the only eclipsing binary known to contain a HgMn star, making it an ideal case for a detailed study of the HgMn phenomenon. HgMn stars are a poorly understood class of chemically peculiar stars, which have traditionally been thought not to possess significant magnetic fields. However, the recent discovery of line profile variability in some HgMn stars, apparently attributable to surface abundance patches, has brought this belief into question. In this paper we investigate the chemical abundances, line profile variability, and magnetic field of the primary and secondary of the AR Aur system, using a series of high resolution spectropolarimetric observations. We find the primary is indeed a HgMn star, and present the most precise abundances yet determined for this star. We find the secondary is a weak Am star, and is possibly still on the pre-main sequence. Line profile variability was observed in a range of lines in the primary, and is attributed to inhomogeneous surface distributions of some elements. No magnetic field was detected in any observation of either stars, with an upper limit on the longitudinal magnetic field in both stars of 100 G. Modeling of the phase-resolve longitudinal field measurements leads to a 3 sigma upper limit on any dipole surface magnetic field of about 400 G.

Abstract: Among the A/B stars, about 5% host large-scale organised magnetic fields. These magnetic stars show also abundance anomalies in their spectra, and are therefore called the magnetic Ap/Bp stars. Most of these stars are also slow rotators compared to the normal A and B stars. Today, one of the greatest challenges concerning the Ap/Bp stars is to understand the origin of their slow rotation and their magnetic fields. The favoured hypothesis for the latter is that the fields are fosils, which implies that the magnetic fields subsist throughout the different evolutionary phases, and in particular during the pre-main sequence phase. The existence of magnetic fields at the pre-main sequence phase is also required to explain the slow rotation of Ap/Bp stars. During the last 3 years we performed a spectropolarimetric survey of the Herbig Ae/Be stars in the field and in young clusters, in order to investigate their magnetism and rotation. These investigations have resulted in the detection and/or confirmation of magnetic fields in 8 Herbig Ae/Be stars, ranging in mass from 2 to nearly 15 solar masses. Abstract: After our recent discovery of four magnetic Herbig stars, we have decided to study in detail one of them, HD 200775, to determine if its magnetic topology is similar to that of the main sequence magnetic stars. With this aim, we monitored this star in Stokes I and V over more than two years, using the new spectropolarimeters ESPaDOnS at CFHT, and Narval at TBL. Using our data, we find that HD 200775 is a double-lined spectroscopic binary system, whose secondary seems similar, in temperature, to the primary. We determine the luminosity ratio of the system, and using the luminosity of the system found in literature, we derive the luminosity of both stars. From our measurements of the radial velocities of both stars we determine the ephemeris and the orbital parameters of the system. We have fitted 30 Stokes V profiles simultaneously, using a chi2 minimisation method, with a decentered-dipole model. The best-fit model provides a rotation period of 4.3281 d an inclination angle of 60 degrees, and a magnetic obliquity angle of 125 degrees. The polar strength of the magnetic dipole field is 1000 G, which is decentered by 0.05 R* from the center of the star. The derived magnetic field model is qualitatively identical to those commonly observed in the Ap/Bp stars, which bring strong argument in favour of the fossil field hypothesis, to explain the origin of the magnetic fields in the main sequence Ap/Bp stars. Our determination of the inclination of the rotation axis leads to a radius of the primary which is smaller than that derived from the HR diagram position. This can be explained by a larger intrinsic luminosity of the secondary relative to the primary, due to a larger circumstellar extinction of the secondary relative to the primary.
