The structural and electronic properties of the CaMnGe$_2$O$_6$ and SrMnGe$_2$O$_6$ clinopyroxene systems have been investigated by means of perturbed angular correlation (PAC) measurements, performed at ISOLDE, combined with $ab-initio$ electronic structure calculations within the density functional theory (DFT) framework. The partial density of states (PDOS) of the CaMnGe$_2$O$_6$ and SrMnGe$_2$O$_6$ stable compounds has been determined, and it has been observed that the requirement of including an on-site Hubbard-$U$ potential was necessary in order to describe the highly correlated Mn $3d$-states. By considering $U_{eff}$=4 eV, we obtained a band gap width of 1.82 eV and 1.70 eV, for the CaMnGe$_2$O$_6$ and SrMnGe$_2$O$_6$, respectively. Combining electric field gradient (EFG) first principles calculations, using a supercell scheme, with experimental PAC results, we were able to infer that the Cd probe can replace either the $A$ (Ca, Sr) or the Mn sites in the crystalline structures. We also showed that Cd substitution is expected to lead to a reduction in the width of the band gap in these systems, evidencing opportunities for potential band-gap engineering.

In metal-organic-framework (MOF) perovskites, both magnetic and ferroelectric orderings can be readily realized by compounding spin and charge degrees of freedom. The hydrogen bonds that bridge the magnetic framework and organic molecules have long been thought of as a key in generating multiferroic properties. However, the underlying physical mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we combine neutron diffraction, quasielastic and inelastic neutron scattering, and THz spectroscopy techniques to thoroughly investigate the dynamical properties of the multiferroic MOF candidate [CH$_3$NH$_3$][Co(HCOO)$_3$] through its multiple phase transitions. The wide range of energy resolutions reachable by these techniques enables us to scrutinize the coupling between the molecules and the framework throughout the phase transitions and interrogate a possible magnetoelectric coupling. Our results also reveal a structural change around 220 K which may be associated with the activation of a nodding donkey mode of the methylammonium molecule due to the ordering of the CH$_3$ groups. Upon the occurrence of the modulated phase transition around 130 K, the methylammonium molecules undergo a freezing of its reorientational motions which is concomitant with a change of the lattice parameters and anomalies of collective lattice vibrations. No significant change has been however observed in the lattice dynamics around the magnetic ordering, which therefore indicates the absence of a substantial magneto-electric coupling in zero-field.

Anisotropic multiferroic properties of SrMnGe2O6 pyroxene single crystals were systematically investigated by means of magnetization, heat capacity, pyroelectric current measurement and elastic and inelastic neutron scattering experiments. Single crystal neutron diffraction allows us to unambiguously reveal the presence of two incommensurate magnetic orderings: a non-polar amplitude-modulated collinear sinusoidal magnetic structure emerges at TN1=4.36(2)K followed by a polar elliptical cycloidal spin structure below TN2=4.05(2)K. Pyroelectric current measurements on single crystal confirm the appearance of a spontaneous polarization within the (ac) plane below TN2 associated with the latter magnetic symmetry through extended Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya mechanism. The magnetic phase diagram was calculated considering the three isotropic exchange couplings relevant in this system. The magnetic excitations spectra of SrMnGe2O6 measured by inelastic neutron scattering were successfully modeled using a set of exchange interactions consistent with this phase diagram.

The layered compound KCu$_3$As$_2$O$_7$(OD)$_3$, comprising distorted kagome planes of $S=1/2$ Cu$^{2+}$ ions, is a recent addition to the family of type-II multiferroics. Previous zero field neutron diffraction work has found two helically ordered regimes in \kns, each showing a distinct coupling between the magnetic and ferroelectric order parameters. Here, we extend this work to magnetic fields up to $20$~T using neutron powder diffraction, capacitance, polarization, and high-field magnetization measurements, hence determining the $H-T$ phase diagram. We find metamagnetic transitions in both low temperatures phases around $\mu_0 H_c \sim 3.7$~T, which neutron powder diffraction reveals to correspond to a rotation of the helix plane away from the easy plane, as well as a small change in the propagation vector. Furthermore, we show that the sign of the ferroelectric polarization is reversible in a magnetic field, although no change is observed (or expected on the basis of the magnetic structure) due to the transition at $3.7$~T. We finally justify the temperature dependence of the polarization in both zero-field ordered phases by a symmetry analysis of the free energy expansion.

The interest in finding experimental realization of Quantum Liquid Spin phases leads us to elaborate polycrystalline samples of the 6H-B phase of Ba3NiSb2O9 . This structure shows Ni triangular planes and the first magnetic characterizations confirm the absence of any magnetic order as expected for QLS. The samples were synthesized by treatment under HP-HT of the 6H-A phase of Ba3NiSb2O9. The optimized synthesis conditions were 2.5 GPa and 620{\deg}C. By combining several technics as XRD, NPD and TEM we show that even the obtained compound is in fact a new form of Ba3NiSb2O9, that corresponds to a new stacking along c. This preserves the presence of Ni planes but results in a loss of the hexagonal symmetry. Several Cu$^{2+}$ hydroxide minerals have recently been identified as candidate realizations of the $S=1/2$ kagome Heisenberg model. In this context, we have studied the distorted system KCu$_3$As$_2$O$_7$(OD)$_3$ using neutron scattering and bulk measurements. Although the distortion favors magnetic order over a spin liquid ground state, refinement of the magnetic diffraction pattern below $T_{N1}=7.05(5)$ K yields a complex helical structure with $\mathbf{k}=(0.77~0~0.11)$. This structure, as well as the spin excitation spectrum, are well described by a classical Heisenberg model with ferromagnetic nearest neighbor couplings. Multiferroicity is observed below $T_{N1}$, with an unusual crossover between improper and pseudo-proper behavior occurring at $T_{N2}=5.5$ K. The polarization at $T=2$ K is $P=1.5 \mu$Cm$^{-2}$. The properties of KCu$_3$As$_2$O$_7$(OD)$_3$ highlight the variety of physics which arise from the interplay of spin and orbital degrees of freedom in Cu$^{2+}$ kagome systems., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. We have investigated the magnetoelectric coupling in the lone pair containing piezoelectric ferrimagnet Cu2OSeO3. Significant magnetocapacitance develops in the magnetically ordered state (TC = 60 K). We find critical behavior near TC and a divergence near the metamagnetic transition at 500 Oe. High-resolution X-ray and neutron powder diffraction measurements show that Cu2OSeO3 is metrically cubic down to 10 K but that the ferrimagnetic ordering reduces the symmetry to rhombohedral R3. The metric cubic lattice dimensions exclude a magnetoelectric coupling mechanism involving spontaneous lattice strain, and this is unique among magnetoelectric and multiferroic materials., Comment: accepted for publication in PRB
