5. Seasonality combined with the orientation of surfaces influences the microbial community structure of biofilms in the deep Mediterranean Sea

Abstract

Attachment to surfaces represents an important life strategy for microbial communities as indicated by the rapid colonization of biotic and abiotic surfaces in marine waters. However, little attention has been paid to the development of biofilm-associated microbial communities and the environmental parameters influencing biofilm development in the deep sea. In this study, a deep-sea experimental setup was used to follow the development of the microbial community colonizing solid surfaces deployed at 4500 m depth at the deepest point of the Mediterranean Sea. The experiment was performed during summer (May to October 2007) and winter (October 2007–May 2008), each lasting for 155 d. The phylogenetic composition of the biofilm community was determined by tag sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. We investigated whether the composition of the deep-sea microbial biofilms is influenced by seasonality. Based on tag sequencing, operational taxonomic units were identified and diversity indices calculated. Seasonality combined with the orientation of the solid surface on which the biofilms were growing was the main factor influencing the structure of the microbial community. The most abundant phyla of deep-sea biofilm communities attached to the solid surfaces were Gammaproteobacteria (range: 10.8%–92.6%), Alphaproteobacteria (range: 34.9%–92.6%) and Betaproteobacteria (range: 0.3%–2.1%), irrespective of the variables (surface, orientation, season). Flavobacteria and Epsilonbacteria show a clear preference with respect to the orientation of the deployed surfaces during the winter, however, they were essentially absent at the surfaces during the summer. Some bacterial classes such as Campylobacterales and Rhodobacterales showed distinct preferences for specific seasons or orientation of the substrate. Abstract

The development and use of FerryBox systems as a cost-effective instrument for continuous observations of the marine environment has been well established since more than 15 years. The systems have evolved to maturity and are since widely used around the coastal ocean of Europe. The availability of newly developed sensors allows the extension of FerryBox measurements to more biogeochemical parameters which are of interest for the requirements of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). The FerryBox community initially formed from the partners of an EU funded FerryBox project provides mutual exchange of experience and is now organized within EuroGOOS as a so called FerryBox Task Team (www.ferrybox.org). Within the EU funded infrastructure projects JERICO and JERICO-NEXT the technical harmonization as well as the developing of best practise guides for FerryBox systems have been a step further to high quality environmental data products. Within JERICO-NEXT it has been decided to build up a common FerryBox database and data portal in order to make the FerryBox data more available and visible. Furthermore this database will be function as a close link to the Copernicus Marine Environmental Monitoring Services (CMEMS) and the EMODnet portal.

Abstract

The Coastal Observing System for Northern and Arctic Seas (COSYNA) was established in order to better understand the complex interdisciplinary processes of northern seas and the arctic coasts in a changing environment. Particular focus is given to the German Bight in the North Sea as a prime example for a heavily used coastal area, and Svalbard as an example of an arctic coast that is under strong pressure due to global change. The automated observing and modelling system COSYNA is designed to monitor real time conditions, provide short-term forecasts and data products, and to assess the impact of anthropogenically induced change. Observations are carried out combining satellite and radar remote sensing with various in situ platforms. Novel sensors, instruments, and algorithms are developed to further improve the understanding of the interdisciplinary interactions between physics, biogeochemistry, and the ecology of coastal seas. New modelling and data assimilation techniques are used to integrate observations and models in a quasi-operational system providing descriptions and forecasts of key hydrographic variables. Data and data products are publically available free of charge and in real time. They are used by multiple interest groups in science, agencies, politics, industry, and the public.

Abstract

This scene-setting chapter provides the basis for the climate change-related assessments presented in later chapters of this book. It opens with an overview of the geography, demography and major human activities of the North Sea and its boundary countries. This is followed by a series of sections describing the geological and climatic evolution of the North Sea basin, the topography and hydrography of the North Sea (i.e. boundary forcing; thermohaline, wind-driven and tidally-driven regimes; and transport processes), and its current atmospheric climate (focussing on circulation, wind, temperature, precipitation, radiation and cloud cover). This physical description is followed by a review of North Sea ecosystems. Marine and coastal ecosystems are addressed in terms of ecological habitats, ecological dynamics, and human-induced stresses representing a threat (i.e. eutrophication, harmful algal blooms, offshore oil and gas, renewable energy, fisheries, contaminants, tourism, ports, non-indigenous species and climate change). Terrestrial coastal range vegetation is addressed in terms of natural vegetation (salt marshes, dunes, moors/bogs, tundra and alpine vegetation, and forests), semi-natural vegetation (heathlands and grasslands), agricultural areas and artificial surfaces.

Abstract

Fishers and scientists have known for over 100 years that the status of fish stocks can be greatly influenced by prevailing climatic conditions. Based on historical sea surface temperature data, the North Sea has been identified as one of 20 ‘hot spots’ of climate change globally and projections for the next 100 years suggest that the region will continue to warm. The consequences of this rapid temperature rise are already being seen in shifts in species distribution and variability in stock recruitment. This chapter reviews current evidence for climate change effects on fisheries in the North Sea—one of the most important fishing grounds in the world—as well as available projections for North Sea fisheries in the future. Discussion focuses on biological, operational and wider market concerns, as well as on possible economic consequences. It is clear that fish communities and the fisheries that target them will be very different in 50 or 100 years’ time and that management and governance will need to adapt accordingly

Abstract

This chapter presents a review of what is known about the impacts of climate change on the biota (plankton, benthos, fish, seabirds and marine mammals) of the North Sea. Examples show how the changing North Sea environment is affecting biological processes and organisation at all scales, including the physiology, reproduction, growth, survival, behaviour and transport of individuals; the distribution, dynamics and evolution of populations; and the trophic structure and coupling of ecosystems. These complex responses can be detected because there are detailed long-term biological and environmental records for the North Sea; written records go back 500 years and archaeological records many thousands of years. The information presented here shows that the composition and productivity of the North Sea marine ecosystem is clearly affected by climate change and that this will have consequences for sustainable levels of harvesting and other ecosystem services in the future. Multi-variate ocean climate indicators that can be used to monitor and warn of changes in composition and productivity are now being developed for the North Sea

Abstract

Detection of high-energy neutrinos from distant astrophysical sources will open a new window on the Universe. The detection principle exploits the measurement of Cherenkov light emitted by charged particles resulting from neutrino interactions in the matter containing the telescope. A novel multi-PMT digital optical module (DOM) was developed to contain 31 3-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). In order to maximize the detector sensitivity, each PMT will be surrounded by an expansion cone which collects photons that would otherwise miss the photocathode. Results for various angles of incidence with respect to the PMT surface indicate an increase in collection efficiency by 30% on average for angles up to 45° with respect to the perpendicular. Ray-tracing calculations could reproduce the measurements, allowing to estimate an increase in the overall photocathode sensitivity, integrated over all angles of incidence, by 27% (for a single PMT). Abstract

A recent analysis of the Fermi Large Area Telescope data provided evidence for a high-intensity emission of high-energy gamma rays with a E-2 spectrum from two large areas, spanning 50° above and below the Galactic centre (the "Fermi bubbles"). A hadronic mechanism was proposed for this gamma-ray emission making the Fermi bubbles promising source candidates of high-energy neutrino emission. In this work Monte Carlo simulations regarding the detectability of high-energy neutrinos from the Fermi bubbles with the future multi-km3 neutrino telescope KM3NeT in the Mediterranean Sea are presented. Under the hypothesis that the gamma-ray emission is completely due to hadronic processes, the results indicate that neutrinos from the bubbles could be discovered in about one year of operation, for a neutrino spectrum with a cutoff at 100 TeV and a detector with about 6 km3 of instrumented volume. The effect of a possible lower cutoff is also considered. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

The European coastal zone is characterized by high anthropogenic riverine nutrient loads, and turbid waters along the continental North Sea coastal stretch. Riverine nutrient inputs (N and P) have increased since the 1950's and have decreased again since the mid 1980's. Using the approach of Cloern (Cloern, J.E., 1999. Aquatic Ecology 33, 3–16), we analyzed potential limitation patterns of light and nutrients (DIN, PO4, Si) for seven long-term monitoring stations along the North Sea coast. As available, data from 1990 until 2005 were analyzed. Underwater irradiance was the dominant factor potentially limiting phytoplankton growth. Seasonal limitation patterns strongly differed between the investigated sites. Si limitation was the most common among the stations followed by PO4 limitation. Only one station with optimum light conditions (northern Wadden Sea) resulted a potential DIN limitation. An increase in nutrient limitation, or co-limitation of light and nutrients, was observed off the Dutch coast (DIN and PO4), and in the German Bight near Helgoland (DIN, PO4, Si) within the period from 1990 until 2005. However, we observed no clear effects of nutrient reduction measures in shallow areas of the Wadden Sea during the period studied. We conclude that long-term nutrient limitation patterns are consistent and site dependent, and strongly linked to the local hydrography and light conditions of the water column.

To develop EMECO (www.cefas.co.uk/emeco) a bottom – up approach has been adopted based upon collaboration between agencies with statutory responsibilities for a range of environmental pressures from monitoring and assessment of nutrients and hazardous substances, wave monitoring to fish stock assessments. The monitoring programmes associated with such activities are by nature long-term and these programmes form key components of EMECO. However, there are a range of other programmes with either a relevant North Sea component (EU Ferry Box programme, International CPR programme, Smart-Buoy programme) or are part of wider initiatives (e.g. satellite remote sensing) that will also contribute to the observatory. It will also embrace initiatives to protect and conserve renewable and sustainable resources such as Marine Protected Areas and closed area for fisheries such as the Dutch Cod Box. The observatory will provide an opportunity to integrate research with monitoring and assessment programmes and to undertake reviews at a regional level to identify gaps in information and develop strategies to address shortcomings. Within the ecosystem approach, ICES is increasingly aware of the need to include ecosystem considerations in its fisheries assessment models in order to enhance their predictive properties. Moreover, ICES’ preparedness to carry out integrated assessments could be greatly enhanced by the scientific framework embedded in EMECO. This paper will describe the approach taken so far with EMECO, will explore the relationships and chances for collaboration with other initiatives (ECOOP GMES, EuroGOOS) and will examine how EMECO might contribute to ICES’ needs for environmental information in fisheries and ecosystem advice. The observatory will provide an opportunity to integrate research with monitoring and assessment programmes and to undertake reviews at a regional level to identify gaps in information and develop strategies to address shortcomings. Within the ecosystem approach, ICES is increasingly aware of the need to include ecosystem considerations in its fisheries assessment models in order to enhance their predictive properties. Moreover, ICES’ preparedness to carry out integrated assessments could be greatly enhanced by the scientific framework embedded in EMECO. This paper will describe the approach taken so far with EMECO, will explore the relationships and chances for collaboration with other initiatives (ECOOP GMES, EuroGOOS) and will examine how EMECO might contribute to ICES’ needs for environmental information in fisheries and ecosystem advice. 43. Growth and mortality of flagellates and non-flagellate cells of Phaeocystis globosa (Prymnesiophyceae)

Abstract

Two cell types of the same clone of Phaeocystis globosa, solitary non-flagellate cells and flagellates, were grown in batch cultures under identical conditions. The non-flagellate cells had a shorter lag phase (1.4 versus 2.8 days) and a higher growth rate (0.72 versus 0.65 day(-1)) than flagellate cells. The flagellates had a longer stationary phase (15.6 versus 9.5 days) and a lower death rate (0.07 versus 0.52 day(-1)) than non-flagellate cells. All differences were statistically significant. Biomass yield did not differ between the two cell types. The short lag phase and high growth rate of non-flagellate cells corresponds to field observations of rapidly developing non-flagellate Phaeocystis blooms that are typically observed in nutrient-rich environments such as temperate seas in spring. The flagellate cell type, with its longer stationary phase and lower death rate than non-flagellate cells, is better equipped for survival in oligotrophic environments. This explains why the flagellates of Phaeocystis are abundant after the spring phytoplankton bloom in temperate seas and in other nutrient-poor environments such as the open ocean.
