7. Cointegration strategy for damage assessment of offshore platforms subject to wind and wave forces

Abstract

In structural engineering, offshore structures are undoubtedly among the most exposed to the effects of harsh environmental conditions. The external conditions of these semi-immersed systems involve complex combinations of wave and wind loads. The operating conditions are also unique because oil production platforms are subjected to repeated loading and unloading cycles of the extracted material, which continuously alter their mass. These characteristics make the definition of a structural health monitoring (SHM) protocol highly challenging but necessary to avoid environmental disasters. In this regard, this study discusses an SHM method that can be applied to offshore structures under realistic wave and wind loads. This approach combines anomaly detection, frequency domain decomposition, and a cointegration strategy. Two machine learning regression algorithms were tested to define a cointegration relationship: the support vector machine and the relevance vector machine. The effectiveness of the overall method was evaluated on time-domain signals generated from a finite-element model of a fixed steel platform, on which the Davenport and JONSWAP spectra were used to simulate wind and wave forces. We report our 10-year experience with TEA and incidence of complications.Patients and Methods: Patients received continuous infusion TEA (0.2% ropivacaine and 2 μg ml− 1 fentanyl) to control postoperative pain. Every 8 hours, the acute pain service recorded the analgesia regimen and occurrence of side effects. The initial infusion rate was tapered daily in response to improvement in pain symptoms or occurrence of side effects.Results: A total of 3126 patients received TEA. The median age was 65 years (range, 18– 94) and the duration of catheter placement was 3.5 days (range, 2– 8). Three major complications were identified (1:1042): two subarachnoid blocks and one epidural abscess which led to permanent sequela (1:3126). Minor complications were hypotension (4.8%), pruritus (4.4%), accidental catheter removal (3.7%), insertion site inflammation (2.5%), motor weakness (2.0%), postoperative nausea and vomiting (1.8%), catheter disconnection (1.9%), catheter occlusion (0.3%), post-dural puncture headache (0.5%), and catheter fragment retention (0.06%), which were the reasons for a 7.4% rate of early discontinuation of epidural analgesia. No occurrence of epidural hematoma, local anesthetic systemic toxicity, and cardiovascular/respiratory depression was recorded.Conclusion: Postoperative TEA is an advanced technique that poses certain difficulties that can subvert its great potential. While serious complications were rare, minor complications occurred more often and affected the postoperative course negatively. Abstract

A study of the characterization of alternating current losses in high temperature superconducting cable conductors using an electrical and two calorimetric techniques is presented. The calorimetric methods include one based on nitrogen boil-off rate and another based on temperature profile determination. The electrical measurement methodology, derived mainly from the technique already established for tapes, is based on voltage measurements via a Lock-In amplifier.

Abstract

Research on job crafting is increasing nowadays. Job crafting has been studied in terms of a mediator variable useful to improve positive organizational behaviors, and it has crucial theoretical and practical implications. In order to facilitate its measurement in large surveys, in different settings, we aimed to develop a brief 12-item version, the Job Crafting Scale-Short Form (JCS-SF). Having a brief scale to measure job crafting behaviors will contribute to facilitate research in several organizational contexts. This study presents the main psychometric properties of a brief JC scale based on JC scale developed by Tims et al. (2012). EFA results show support for the original Four-factor solution. Results have been confirmed using CFA. The four subscales showed adequate reliability. The brief scale could be used for researchers and practitioners in public and private organizational sectors.

Abstract

The growing concern about the GHG emissions and their detrimental effect on the population and the environment constitute the mean reason of the commitment to invest resources to investigate the application of the Energy Efficiency Design Index for ships in the belief that this kind of instrument could deliver in the long term perspective reduction in CO2 emissions. The achievement of this outstanding objective has to rely on a robust and technically sound instrument that at the same time does not undermine the shipping capabilities. To this end an investigation on the application of the EEDI concept, as established so far by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to the Ro-Pax ship segment has the scope to test the validity of the concept and eventually to further refine and develop it under the over-hatching objective of CO2 emissions reduction. Furthermore we would like to underline how this particular segment of Ro-Pax and more in general Ro-Ro ship categories, are those which are operating mainly in short sea services and are in direct competition with other modes of transport. Therefore in line with the recent White Paper on Transport issued by the European Commission where a modal shift to more environmentally friendly modes for voyages longer than 300km is an objective, this study will try to further reinforce the rightness of that high level objective. The present study takes action from the EEDI scheme as defined in the MEPC of IMO over the past years and in particular refers to the following documents: MEPC.1/Circ.681, MEPC.1/682, MEPC.61.WP10, MEPC 62/6/4 which constitute the frame under which the following consideration have been developed.

Abstract

The current repartition inside a HTS cable is very important for determining its AC losses and can be influenced by the uniformity of several parameters, either linked to the physical properties of the individual tapes (critical current Ic and power index n) or due to the manufacturing process (contact resistance). This work investigates the importance of the non-uniformity of these parameters for a manufactured 16-tape straight superconducting cable by means of finite element method (FEM) simulations. The utilized non-linear E-J model includes the anisotropic dependence of the critical current density and the power index on the local magnetic field. It is shown that the non-uniformity of the cable parameters influences the behaviour of the individual tapes, but not that of the whole cable. The utilized FEM model has been validated by a comparison with electrical measurements of the cable AC losses, as well as with the results of another simpler numerical model, which considers the cable from the macroscopic point of view.
