Abstract

We describe here the most ambitious survey currently planned in the optical, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). The LSST design is driven by four main science themes: probing dark energy and dark matter, taking an inventory of the solar system, exploring the transient optical sky, and mapping the Milky Way. LSST will be a large, wide-field ground-based system designed to obtain repeated images covering the sky visible from Cerro Pachón in northern Chile. The telescope will have an 8.4 m (6.5 m effective) primary mirror, a 9.6 deg 2 field of view, a 3.2-gigapixel camera, and six filters (ugrizy) covering the wavelength range 320-1050 nm. The project is in the construction phase and will begin regular survey operations by 2022. About 90% of the observing time will be devoted to a deep-wide-fast survey mode that will uniformly observe a 18,000 deg 2 region about 800 times (summed over all six bands) during the anticipated 10 yr of operations and will yield a co-added map to r ∼27.5. These data will result in databases including about 32 trillion observations of 20 billion galaxies and a similar number of stars, and they will serve the majority of the primary science programs. The remaining 10% of the observing time will be allocated to special projects such as Very Deep and Very Fast time domain surveys, whose details are currently under discussion. We illustrate how the LSST science drivers led to these choices of system parameters, and we describe the expected data products and their characteristics.

Abstract

On-chip single-photon sources are key components for integrated photonic quantum technologies. Semiconductor quantum dots can exhibit near-ideal single-photon emission but this can be significantly degraded in on-chip geometries owing to nearby etched surfaces. A long-proposed solution to improve the indistinguishablility is by using the Purcell effect to reduce the radiative lifetime. However, until now only modest Purcell enhancements have been observed. Here we use pulsed resonant excitation to eliminate slow relaxation paths, revealing a highly Purcell-shortened radiative lifetime (22.7 ps) in a waveguide-coupled quantum dot-photonic crystal cavity system. This leads to near-lifetime-limited single-photon emission which retains high indistinguishablility (93.9%) on a timescale in which 20 photons may be emitted. Abstract

Scalable quantum technologies require faithful conversion between matter qubits storing the quantum information and photonic qubits carrying the information in integrated circuits and waveguides. We demonstrate that the electromagnetic field chirality which arises in nanophotonic waveguides leads to unidirectional emission from an embedded quantum dot quantum emitter, with resultant in-plane transfer of matter-qubit (spin) information. The chiral behavior occurs despite the non-chiral geometry and material of the waveguides. Using dot registration techniques we achieve a quantum emitter deterministically positioned at a chiral point and realize spin-path conversion by design. We measure and compare the phenomena in single mode nanobeam and photonic crystal waveguides. The former is much more tolerant to dot position, exhibits experimental spin-path readout as high as 95 +/- 5% and has potential to serve as the basis of future spin-logic and network implementations.

Abstract

Advances in nanotechnology provide techniques for the realisation of integrated quantum-optical circuits for on-chip quantum information processing(QIP). The indistinguishable single photons, required for such devices can be generated by parametric down-conversion, or from quantum emitters such as colour centres and quantum dots(QDs). Among these, semiconductor QDs offer distinctive capabilities including on-demand operation, coherent control, frequency tuning and compatibility with semiconductor nanotechnology. Moreover, the coherence of QD photons can be significantly enhanced in resonance fluorescence(RF) approaching at its best the coherence of the excitation laser. However, the implementation of QD RF in scalable on-chip geometries remains challenging due to the need to suppress stray laser photons. Here we report on-chip QD RF coupled into a single-mode waveguide with negligible resonant laser background and show that the coherence is enhanced compared to off-resonant excitation. The results pave the way to a novel class of integrated quantum-optical devices for on-chip QIP with embedded resonantly-driven quantum emitters.

Abstract

A fundamental component of an integrated quantum optical circuit is an on-chip beam-splitter operating at the single-photon level. Here we demonstrate the monolithic integration of an on-demand quantum emitter in the form of a single self-assembled InGaAs quantum dot (QD) with a compact (>10 um), air clad, free standing directional coupler acting as a beam-splitter for anti-bunched light. The device was tested by using single photons emitted by a QD embedded in one of the input arms of the device. We verified the single-photon nature of the QD signal by performing Hanbury Brown- Twiss (HBT) measurements and demonstrated single-photon beam splitting by cross-correlating the signal from the separate output ports of the directional coupler., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We present a waveguide-coupled photonic crystal H1 cavity structure in which the orthogonal dipole modes couple to spatially separated photonic crystal waveguides. Coupling of each cavity mode to its respective waveguide with equal efficiency is achieved by adjusting the position and orientation of the waveguides. The behavior of the optimized device is experimentally verified for where the cavity mode splitting is larger and smaller than the cavity mode linewidth. In both cases, coupled Q-factors up to 1600 and contrast ratios up to 10 are achieved. This design may allow for spin state readout of a self-assembled quantum dot positioned at the cavity center or function as an ultra-fast optical switch operating at the single photon level.

Abstract

We demonstrate coherent control of a quantum dot exciton using photocurrent detection with a sinusoidal reverse bias. Optical control is performed at low bias, where tunneling-limited coherence times are long. Following this step, the tunneling rates are increased to remove the long-lived hole, achieving a high photocurrent signal. For a detection efficiency of 68%, electron and hole tunneling times during optical control of 200 ps and 20 ns can be achieved, compared to 120 ps and 7 ns for the constant bias case, respectively., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

In contrast to birds and mammals for example, amphibian population studies only rarely capture information based on genealogical relationships among individuals. As a consequence, we only have very limited knowledge about individual fitness measures such as lifetime reproductive success and the consequences of such variation on the linkage between generations of amphibians in the wild. The present thesis makes use of an existing long-term study on the common toad (Bufo bufo) in southern England (Dorset) to genetically identify parent-offspring relationships among approximately 850 individual toads, representing two successive generations (2004/2005/2006 and 2008/2009). The dataset enabled the comparison of measures of effective population size as well as effective breeding size, revealing ratios between 0.07 and 0.26. These data also showed an increasing trend with time and were (by some estimators) confirmed by the cross-generational parentage analysis which revealed a high reproductive skew among individuals. Forty-five percent of offspring could be assigned to a least one parent; in total, 6% of male parents and 30% of female parents were inferred. The pedigree information was also used to identify a possible hereditary basis for an observed decrease in female body condition and fecundity correlated to increased environmental temperatures. There was no indication for heritability of body size, body weight and body condition, suggesting that the documented decrease is based on phenotypic plasticity rather than evolutionary adaptation. However, kinship data that shows the population is less inbred with time coupled with the effective breeding number estimates showing an increasing trend with time suggest that despite the absence of evolutionary change, this population may still be able to circumvent the adverse effects associated with decreased body condition.

14. Fission-fusion sociality in southern muriquis (Brachyteles arachnoides) in continuous Brazilian Atlantic forest

Abstract

The factors that shape the evolution and maintenance of fission-fusion dynamics are determined in this thesis, by investigating the egalitarian muriqui, inhabiting a dense-ombrophilous, sub-montane forest with mild seasonality in fruit availability. A habituated study group at Parque Estadual Carlos Botelho, São Paulo State, Brazil was observed for 13 months, in dry and wet seasons. Instantaneous scans (6393 scans, 1599 observation hours), focal samples and ad libitum observations were conducted on parties to record individual and party-level behaviours. Food availability was determined at two spatio-temporal scales: i) habitat-wide (absolute) using data from vegetation transects and monthly monitoring of phenophase productivity, and ii) patch-level (effective) using data from actual food resources exploited by the muriquis. Southern muriquis had a relatively small mean party size (3.34 adults) and showed lower group cohesion compared with other fission-fusion species. However, variation in party duration or spatial arrangement and sub-group size highlights a continuum in fragmentation patterns. The lack of a relationship between party size and fruit availability suggests that muriquis experience substantial travel costs associated with being in larger than optimal party sizes (despite non-territoriality and multiple central-place foraging). In conclusion, fission-fusion dynamics and facultative behaviours may not solely function to decrease feeding competition. Social preferences constrain the formation of the parties, and same-sex associations within parties reflect sexual segregation between parties throughout the year. The prevalence and complexity of fission-fusion dynamics in the study population is suggested to be due to social factors (e.g. social foraging, individual based decision making) in an environment where fruit is aseasonal and fruit species asynchronous in availability.

Abstract

Recent studies have demonstrated that affected regions of the striatum show increased HD immunoreactivity, suggesting that subtle differences in expression of the HD protein may be relevant to pathogenesis. Current information regarding control of HD gene expression is limited, and to date has been based entirely upon sequence analysis of the promoter region. The overall aim of this thesis, therefore, was to carry out a more detailed analysis of the HD gene promoter, in order to identify its key regulatory elements, and to attempt to determine the relationship between promoter activity and various aspects of HD pathogenesis. Single-stranded conformation polymorphism analysts, heteroduplex and sequencing analyses were used to demonstrate that the HD gene promoter is highly polymorphic. Seven allelic forms were identified. This region of the promoter was found to be highly conserved in non-human primates, which may reflect a common mechanism of gene regulation. Reporter gene assays were used to localise the key regulatory regions, whilst the ability of specific transcription factors to bind the putative sites was studied using the Electrophoretic Mobility Shift Assay. The critical positive-acting region of the HD gene promoter was shown to arise from the synergistic action of two sites in a tandem repeat, which each bind the transcription factor, Sp1. Differences in expression control have been found to exist between a neuronal and a non-neuronal cell line, and the regions of the promoter responsible for these effects have been localised. Both 12-O-tetradecanoyl-phorbol-13-acetate (TPA) and forskolin were found to elicit a cell-type specific response in transcription from the HD gene promoter. The responses to TPA have been mapped in detail in the neuronal SK-N-SH cell line and in HeLa cells. Additional experiments, including a comparison of promoter activity in undifferentiated and differentiated neurons, and a study of the effects of excitotoxins upon activity, have addressed questions regarding temporal patterns and modulations of expression from the HD gene promoter.

Abstract

Surface curvature both emerges from, and influences the behavior of, living objects at length scales ranging from cell membranes to single cells to tissues and organs. The relevance of surface curvature in biology has been supported by numerous recent experimental and theoretical investigations in recent years. In this review, we first give a brief introduction to the key ideas of surface curvature in the context of biological systems and discuss the challenges that arise when measuring surface curvature. Giving an overview of the emergence of curvature in biological systems, its significance at different length scales becomes apparent. On the other hand, summarizing current findings also shows that both single cells and entire cell sheets, tissues or organisms respond to curvature by modulating their shape and their migration behavior. Finally, we address the interplay between the distribution of morphogens or micro-organisms and the emergence of curvature across length scales with examples demonstrating these key mechanistic principles of morphogenesis. Overall, this review highlights that curved interfaces are not merely a passive by-product of the chemical, biological and mechanical processes but that curvature acts also as a signal that co-determines these processes. Abstract

Modern workplaces often have Open Plan Office Design, clear glass offices or even superdesk -one huge, continuous single desk for all staff- designs in order to stimulate communication and ideas among employees. While the benefits of open-plan workspace are present, individuals no longer have a private space to take their timeout. This chapter explores the positive and negative impacts of open-plan office on employees and proposes some design (a case study of a proof of concept) related remedy for well-being restoration.

Abstract

Scalable quantum technologies may be achieved by faithful conversion between matter qubits and photonic qubits in integrated circuit geometries. Within this context, quantum dots possess well-defined spin states (matter qubits), which couple efficiently to photons. By embedding them in nanophotonic waveguides, they provide a promising platform for quantum technology implementations. In this paper, we demonstrate that the naturally occurring electromagnetic field chirality that arises in nanobeam waveguides leads to unidirectional photon emission from quantum dot spin states, with resultant in-plane transfer of matter-qubit information. The chiral behaviour occurs despite the non-chiral geometry and material of the waveguides. Using dot registration techniques, we achieve a quantum emitter deterministically positioned at a chiral point and realize spin-path conversion by design. We further show that the chiral phenomena are much more tolerant to dot position than in standard photonic crystal waveguides, exhibit spin-path readout up to 95±5% and have potential to serve as the basis of spin-logic and network implementations.
