Abstract

Microwave (MW) spectroscopy is used to investigate the microwave spectrum of propa-1,2-dienyl thiocyanate ([H.sub.2]C=C=CHSC[triple bond]N) in 24-40 and 50-80 GHz spectral regions. The study found that the conformation properties of [H.sub.2]C=CHSCN and [H.sub.2]C=C=CHSCN are different because of their nature of the interaction between the vinyl and allenyl groups with the thiocyano group.

Abstract

The properties of the novel compound cyclopropylmethylphosphine (C3H5CH2PH2) were investigated by means of stark-modulation microwave spectroscopy and high-level quantum chemical calculations. The experimental rotational constant obtained for these conformers were found to be in good agreement with those generated by ab initio geometry optimizations at the MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory.

Abstract

a-type rotational spectra of the hydrogen-bonded complex formed from pyridine and acetylene are reported. Rotational and 14N hyperfine constants indicate that the complex is planar with an acetylenic hydrogen directed toward the nitrogen. However, unlike the complexes of pyridine with HCl and HBr, the acetylene moiety in HCCH--NC5H5 does not lie along the symmetry axis of the nitrogen lone pair, but rather, forms an average angle of 46 with the C2 axis of the pyridine. The a-type spectra of HCCH--NC5H5 and DCCD--NC5H5 are doubled, suggesting the existence of a low lying pair of tunneling states. This doubling persists in the spectra of HCCD--NC5H5, DCCH--NC5H5, indicating that the underlying motion does not involve interchange of the two hydrogens of the acetylene. Single 13C substitution in either the ortho- or meta-position of the pyridine eliminates the doubling and gives rise to separate sets of spectra that are well predicted by a bent geometry with the 13C on either the same side ("inner") or the opposite side ("outer") as the acetylene. High level ab initio calculations are presented which indicate a binding energy of 1.2 kcal/mol and a potential energy barrier of 44 cm-1 in the C2v configuration. Taken together, these results reveal a complex with a bent hydrogen bond and large amplitude rocking of the acetylene moiety. It is likely that the bent equilibrium structure arises from a competition between a weak hydrogen bond to the nitrogen (an n-pair hydrogen bond) and a secondary interaction between the ortho-hydrogens of the pyridine and the p electron density of the acetylene. Abstract

The quantum chemical calculations of the structural and conformational properties of the Z- and E- isomers of the kinetically unstable compound, 3-mercapto-2-propenenitrile prepared by the flash vacuum pyrolysis of the tertiary compound are reported. The investigation of the Z-isomer by Stark-modulation microwave spectroscopy shows that both the forms of the compound have two stable planar rotameric forms, wherein the synperiplanar form of the Z-isomer is the global minimum.

Abstract

Stark-modulation microwave spectroscopy and quantum-chemical calculations using the B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,2pd), MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ,MP2/6-311++G(3df,2pd) and G3 methods were used to study the microwave spectrum of 3-butyne-1-thiol. The observed spectra of five vibrational excited states of the synclinal conformer were assigned to particular vibrational modes with the help of a density functional theory calculation of the vibrational frequencies at the B3L YP/6-311++G(3df,2pd) level of theory.

Abstract

The microwave spectrum of cyclopropylmethylselenol was recorded on a Stark-modulation microwave spectrometer in the 12-62 GHz frequency interval. It was noted that the agreement between the experimental ground-state rotational constants obtained for the preferred conformer were in close agreement with the corresponding r(sub e) values from an ab initio calculation at the MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory.

Three rotameric forms were identified in allyl-phosphine and it was seen that the preferred conformer represented a borderline case of intramolecular hydrogen bond stabilization.

10. STRUCTURAL CHANGES IN THE LUNGS OF DRUG ADDICTS

Abstract

In reviewing thoracic roentgenograms taken routinely of several thousand drug addicts admitted to the Riker's Island Hospital in the past few years, a number of varied and interesting findings were noticed. These, as will be shown later, appeared to be entirely at variance with the patients' complaints and their clinical course. They also varied in intensity almost directly with the period during which the drugs had been used.The addicts were subjected to a six day reduction regimen immediately on their admission to the hospital. Roentgen examination of almost all of them was done on the fourth or fifth day after the commencement of the period of withdrawal of the drug. This usually corresponds to the time in which symptoms due to withdrawal begin to wane and the patient feels comparatively comfortable. 11. Comparison of Fluorescent Antibody Induced by Rubella Virus in Vaccinee and Convalescent Individuals1

Abstract

Specific rubella antibody detectable by indirect immunofluorescence developed in response to immunization with attenuated rubella vaccine, HPV-77, DK-12. Fluorescent antibody (FA) was found when vaccinee sera were reacted with antigens synthesized in three different acutely infected continuous cell lines: BHK-21, LLCMK-2, and RK-13. FA titers were high, and they correlated with antibody titers obtained by hemagglutination-inhibition tests. Levels of FA in vaccinated individuals were slightly lower than those found in persons recovered from natural rubella infections. Rubella FA persists a long time in convalescent individuals and appears to be maintained for at least 19 months in vaccinees.

39. Microwave and quantum chemical study of propa-1,2-dienyl thiocyanate (H2C=C=CHSC triple bond N).

Abstract

The microwave spectrum of propa-1,2-dienyl thiocyanate (H2C=C=CHSC triple bond N) has been investigated in the 24-40 and 50-80 GHz spectral regions. The spectrum of one conformer was assigned. This rotamer, which has a C-C-S-C dihedral angle of about 134 degrees from synperiplanar, is at least 2 kJ/mol more stable than any other form. Two vibrationally excited states assumed to belong to the first excited state of the C-S torsional vibration and to a low bending mode were assigned. Their frequencies were determined to be 62(20) and 155(30) cm-1, respectively. The microwave work has been augmented by ab initio calculations at the MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ and density functional theory calculations at the B3LYP/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory. The B3LYP calculations are generally in better agreement with the observations than the MP2 calculations.
