This exploratory study investigated the efficacy and feasibility of a contingency management (CM) protocol for adolescent smokers that included use of a reduction phase. Using a within-participants design, 19 adolescents completed three 7-day phases: (1) reinforcement for attendance and provision of breath samples (RA) phase, (2) a washout phase, (3) a CM phase, with order of CM and RA counterbalanced. In addition, participants were randomized to one of two reinforcement conditions during the CM phase: (1) CM-Abstinence condition (n = 9), wherein participants earned reinforcement only for carbon monoxide levels (CO) indicating abstinence; (2) CM-Reduction condition (n = 10), wherein participants earned reinforcement for reductions from baseline CO levels for the first half of the CM phase, followed by an abstinence contingency for the remainder of the phase. Compared with CM-Abstinence, adolescents in CM-Reduction demonstrated trends for more abstinent readings and had a significantly higher percentage of readings meeting criteria for reinforcement during the CM phase. Adolescents who received the RA phase first had lower CO readings during the subsequent CM phase than those who received CM first. Future research is warranted on the effects of introducing RA and other control conditions prior to administration of CM, on strengthening the magnitude of the reinforcement, on instituting reinforcement schedules that program more reinforcers and with longer duration to maximize the efficacy of CM-based interventions, and on increasing the exportability of CM for smoking through advances in biochemical data collection and assessment techniques. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a brief version of the Alcohol Expectancy Questionnaire-Adolescent (AEQ-A; Brown, Christiansen, & Goldman, 1987). The original AEQ-A was reduced to seven items (called the AEQ-AB). Principal Components Analysis (PCA) was performed and two factors emerged (General Positive Effects and Potential Negative Effects) accounting for 46% of the variance. Internal consistencies are comparable to those of the original AEQ-A (0.50). Scales correlate with criterion variables such as average drinks per week and average number of drinks per heavy drinking day (p < 0.05). It is concluded that this questionnaire may be useful to clinicians providing brief assessment and intervention. Cross-validation in other samples and other settings is recommended. Missing data are a common practical problem for longitudinal designs. Time-series analysis is a longitudinal method that involves a large number of observations on a single unit. Four different missing-data methods (deletion, mean substitution, mean of adjacent observations, and maximum likelihood estimation) were evaluated. Computer-generated time-series data of length 100 were generated for 50 different conditions representing five levels of autocorrelation, two levels of slope, and five levels of proportion of missing data. Methods were compared with respect to the accuracy of estimation for four parameters (level, error variance, degree of autocorrelation, and slope). The choice of method had a major impact on the analysis. The maximum likelihood very accurately estimated all four parameters under all conditions tested. Background: Depressed mood and substance misuse are prevalent during adolescence, but rates differ between males and females. Little is known regarding how depressed mood influences response to substance use interventions and interactswith gender in connection with subsequent drinking. This study explores the relationship of depressed mood and gender to treatment response in adolescents admitted to an Emergency Department (ED) for alcohol-related incidents. Methods: Adolescents treated at an ED were randomly assigned to a Motivational Interviewing condition or to standard hospital care. Participants (N =268; ages 13 to 19) were followed for 6 months with detailed measures of alcohol involvement and depressed mood. Results: Depressed mood at the time of the ED visit predicted less drinking at 6-month follow-up for 13to 17-year-old girls, but predicted more follow-up drinking for 13to 17-year-old boys and for 18to 19year-old females, above and beyond effects of baseline drinking. Depressed mood did not moderate the relationship between treatment condition and drinking outcome. Conclusions: Depressed mood as reported at the time of an ED visit appears to motivate drinking reductions in earlyto mid-adolescent girls. Depressive symptoms may indicate an adaptive distress response to the event that precipitated the ED visit, which clinicians could capitalize on by heightening awareness of adverse risks and collaborating to set goals. In contrast, depression may be a liability in teenage boys and older teenage girls, and mood symptoms could be an additional target for intervention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cannabis, more often than alcohol, is the drug mentioned in substance-related reasons for treatment of an adolescent in an emergency department (ED). This study examined the prevalence of DSM-IV cannabis and alcohol diagnoses in an adolescent ED sample, evaluated the performance (i.e. sensitivity and specificity) of DSM-IV cannabis symptoms and other screening items as indicators of cannabis diagnosis status, and examined parent-adolescent agreement on the presence of cannabis and alcohol diagnoses. Adolescents (ages 13-19, n=442) admitted to an ED for a non-substance-related injury were administered the diagnostic interview schedule for children (DISC). Parents (n=272) of adolescents younger than age 18 completed the DISC-parent version to report on their child's drug use. A minority met criteria for a current DSM-IV cannabis or alcohol diagnosis: 7.9% for both alcohol and cannabis, 7.5% for cannabis-only, and 9.0% for alcohol-only. Frequency of cannabis use had the best overall performance in discriminating those with and without a cannabis diagnosis compared with items on perceived risk of cannabis use, peer cannabis use, and alcohol and cigarette use. Parent reports generally underestimated the adolescent's substance use. A wide range of data are obtained with self-report. Information obtained from persons using substances is generally reliable and valid, however, many studies show that some proportion of self-reports regarding substance use are inaccurate. This study examines self-reported response distortion in adolescents who received a brief intervention to reduce their smoking. Findings indicate that age and ethnicity of respondent may influence reported response distortion. Factors that appear to influence under- and over-reporting include social desirability and fear of repercussion. Response distortion does not appear to affect rated usefulness of the intervention, nor does intervention type appear to influence whether respondents thought the researcher wanted them to report less use. BACKGROUND: This study examined whether the factor structure of a modified version of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) represented the three intended conceptual domains of consumption, dependence symptoms, and alcohol-related consequences in an adolescent sample. Additionally, the utility of factor-specific cut scores in identifying patients with DSM-IV alcohol diagnoses was investigated. METHODS: Adolescents treated for an injury in an emergency department and who reported alcohol use in the last year (n = 173; 57% male, 72% white) constituted the study sample. A modified version of the AUDIT and the alcohol section of the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children were administered. The AUDIT's factor structure was determined by confirmatory factor analysis and exploratory principal components analysis. Factor-specific cut scores that identified adolescents with a DSM-IV alcohol diagnosis were determined by using receiver operating characteristic analysis. RESULTS: A two-factor model representing consumption and dependence/consequences provided the best fit to the data. A cut score of 3 on the consumption factor and a cut score of 1 on the dependence/consequences factor demonstrated optimal performance in identifying patients with alcohol diagnoses. The consumption factor had better overall performance compared with the dependence/consequences factor, and it had similar overall performance compared with the AUDIT total score. CONCLUSIONS: The AUDIT comprised two correlated factors: consumption and dependence/consequences. The better performance of the consumption factor in detecting adolescents with DSM-IV alcohol diagnoses suggests the utility of including consumption items in brief alcohol screens used with adolescents. BACKGROUND: Promising treatments for alcoholics include naltrexone (NTX), cue exposure combined with urge-specific coping skills training (CET), and communication skills training (CST). This study investigated the effects of combining these elements as treatment adjuncts. METHODS: A 2 x 2 design investigated the effects of CET combined with CST, as compared with an education and relaxation control treatment, during a 2-week partial hospital program (n = 165) followed by 12 weeks of NTX (50 mg/day) or placebo during aftercare (n = 128). Drinking outcomes were assessed at 3, 6, and 12 months after discharge from the partial hospital. Process measures included urge, self-efficacy (confidence about staying abstinent in risky situations), and self-reported coping skills. Medically eligible alcohol-dependent patients were recruited. RESULTS: Among those compliant with medication on at least 70% of days, those who received NTX had significantly fewer heavy drinking days and fewer drinks on days that they drank than those receiving placebo during the medication phase but not during the subsequent 9 months. CET/CST-condition patients were significantly less likely to report a relapse day and reported fewer heavy drinking days at the 6- and 12-month follow-ups than patients in the control treatment. Interactions of medication with behavioral treatments were not significant. Process measures showed that NTX resulted in lower weekly urge ratings, and those in CET/CST used more of the prescribed coping skills after treatment, reported fewer cue-elicited urges, and reported more self-efficacy in a posttest role-play test. Drinking reductions at 3, 6, and 12 months correlated with more use of coping skills, lower urge, and higher self-efficacy. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest the probable value of keeping alcoholics on NTX for longer periods of time and the importance of increasing compliance with NTX. They also support the earlier promising effects of CET and CST as adjuncts to treatment programs for alcoholics by maintaining treatment gains over at least a year. OBJECTIVE: Naltrexone has been found to be an effective adjunct to treatment to reduce the rate of drinking among alcoholics. However, adherence to the medication has been of considerable concern; the high rates of noncompliance with the medication limits the benefits that could potentially be realized from this pharmacotherapy. Knowledge of predictors of noncompliance could result in interventions targeted at these variables. METHOD: Participants were 128 alcohol-dependent patients who participated in a clinical placebo-controlled trial of naltrexone. Upon discharge from a 1- to 2-week partial hospital program, patients were randomly placed into 12 weeks of naltrexone (50 mg/day) or placebo (n = 64 per condition). Patients met with a physician and a research assistant weekly for 4 weeks then biweekly for 8 weeks. RESULTS: Compliance (number of days taking medication) was not predicted by demographic or pretreatment alcohol use variables. Number and severity of side effects in the first week, particularly nausea and fatigue, predicted early termination. Compliance was not predicted by commitment to abstinence or self-efficacy about abstinence, but was greater among patients who believed more strongly that the medication would help them stay sober. Compliance was not predicted by general level of urge to drink during the first week on medication but compliance was greater among those with a higher urge to drink in response to alcohol stimuli in the laboratory. OBJECTIVES: To provide recommendations that will build a better foundation for research on youth smoking cessation. METHODS: The Youth Tobacco Collaborative Cessation panel evaluated youth tobacco cessation literature and convened meetings to reach consensus. RESULTS: Methodological issues include design, recruitment and retention, follow-up, measurement, and youth vernacular. Research gaps include youth characteristics, theoretical approaches, delivery settings, and type of provider. Thirteen key research components for reporting are addressed. CONCLUSIONS: Given the dearth of studies on youth smoking cessation, scientifically rigorous studies need to be conducted with attention to methodological issues, research gaps, and reporting of key research components. Orthogonal separations of data from high-resolution mass spectrometry can provide insight into sample composition and address challenges of complete annotation of molecules in untargeted metabolomics. "Molecular networks" (MNs), as used in the Global Natural Products Social Molecular Networking platform, are a prominent strategy for exploring and visualizing molecular relationships and improving annotation. MNs are mathematical graphs showing the relationships between measured multidimensional data features. MNs also show promise for using network science algorithms to automatically identify targets for annotation candidates and to dereplicate features associated with a single molecular identity. This paper introduces "molecular hypernetworks" (MHNs) as more complex MN models able to natively represent multiway relationships among observations. Compared to MNs, MHNs can more parsimoniously represent the inherent complexity present among groups of observations, initially supporting improved exploratory data analysis and visualization. MHNs also promise to increase confidence in annotation propagation, for both human and analytical processing. We first illustrate MHNs with simple examples, and build them from liquid chromatography- and ion mobility spectrometry-separated MS data. We then describe a method to construct MHNs directly from existing MNs as their "clique reconstructions", demonstrating their utility by comparing examples of previously published graph-based MNs to their respective MHNs.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of organic compounds frequently detected in the environment with widely varying toxicities. Many PAHs activate the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR), inducing the expression of a battery of genes, including xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes like cytochrome P450s (CYPs); however, not all PAHs act via this mechanism. We screened several parent and substituted PAHs in in vitro AHR activation assays to classify their unique activity. Retene (1-methyl-7-isopropylphenanthrene) displays Ahr2-dependent teratogenicity in zebrafish, but did not activate human AHR or zebrafish Ahr2, suggesting a retene metabolite activates Ahr2 in zebrafish to induce developmental toxicity. To investigate the role of metabolism in retene toxicity, studies were performed to determine the functional role of cyp1a, cyp1b1, and the microbiome in retene toxicity, identify the zebrafish window of susceptibility, and measure retene uptake, loss, and metabolite formation in vivo. Cyp1a-null fish were generated using CRISPR-Cas9. Cyp1a-null fish showed increased sensitivity to retene toxicity, whereas Cyp1b1-null fish were less susceptible, and microbiome elimination had no significant effect. Zebrafish required exposure to retene between 24 and 48 hours post fertilization (hpf) to exhibit toxicity. After static exposure, retene concentrations in zebrafish embryos increased until 24 hpf, peaked between 24 and 36 hpf, and decreased rapidly thereafter. We detected retene metabolites at 36 and 48 hpf, indicating metabolic onset preceding toxicity. Objective: Reducing the nicotine content in cigarettes decreases their addictiveness and abuse liability, including among adolescents. Whether these effects differ by race/ethnicity is unknown. This study is a secondary analysis of previously published data collected between 2014-2017. We examined racial/ethnic differences in the effects of smoking cigarettes with varying nicotine content levels on subjective effects and tobacco withdrawal among adolescents who smoke daily., Methods: Across two counterbalanced sessions, 50 adolescents recruited from Rhode Island (ages 15-19; 30 % Underrepresented Minorities [URM], 20 % Asians and Pacific Islanders [API]; 50 % Non-Hispanic Whites) self-administered a very low nicotine content (VLNC; 0.4 mg nicotine/g of tobacco) or normal nicotine content control (NNC; 15.8 mg/g) research cigarette following overnight abstinence. Subjective effects were reported post-administration and tobacco withdrawal outcomes were calculated from pre- to post-administration scores. Multilevel linear models tested main and interactive effects between cigarette nicotine content and race/ethnicity on all study outcomes., Results: Participants reported lower positive subjective effects and reductions in smoking urges after smoking a VLNC cigarette relative to smoking an NNC cigarette (ps < 0.01). A main effect of race/ethnicity emerged, such that API (vs. URM and White) adolescents reported lower positive subjective effects, greater craving reduction, and higher cigarette aversion after smoking, regardless of nicotine content (ps < 0.05). Introduction: A national nicotine reduction policy could reduce the public health toll of smoking. However, reducing nicotine in cigarettes may lead to changes in the use of other tobacco products such as nicotine vaping devices, particularly among young people. Product use outcomes may depend on characteristics of available nicotine vaping devices. We aimed to determine the impact of cigarette nicotine content, vaping device nicotine concentration, and vaping device flavors on choices to smoke, vape, or abstain., Methods: Early young adults (ages 18-20 inclusive, N=80) who reported smoking daily and vaping nicotine at least twice in their lifetime participated in a laboratory study. Participants received either Very Low Nicotine Content (VLNC; 0.4 mg nicotine/g of tobacco) or Normal Nicotine Content (NNC; 15.8 mg/g) cigarettes. First, participants chose between their assigned cigarette or abstaining. Subsequently, participants chose between 2 cigarette puffs, 2 vape puffs, or abstaining. Vaping device nicotine concentration (3mg vs. 18mg/ml) and flavor (tobacco vs. non-tobacco) were manipulated within-subjects., Results: When only cigarettes were available, there were no differences between the VLNC and NNC groups on cigarette choices. When the nicotine vaping device was concurrently available, the VLNC group made fewer choices to smoke than the NNC group. Non-tobacco flavors and lower vaping device nicotine concentration were associated with fewer choices to smoke., Conclusions: Nicotine vaping device availability reduced choices to smoke VLNC cigarettes, and vaping devices with lower nicotine and non-tobacco flavors led to the fewest choices to smoke. Regulators should consider that the availability and characteristics of alternative tobacco products can moderate the product standard's impact., Implications: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration may enact a reduced nicotine product standard that would affect all commercially-available cigarettes. One important population affected by this policy would be early young adults who smoke. Methods for assessing compound identification confidence in metabolomics and related studies have been debated and actively researched for the past two decades. The earliest effort in 2007 focused primarily on mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and resulted in four recommended levels of metabolite identification confidence - the Metabolite Standards Initiative (MSI) Levels. In 2014, the original MSI Levels were expanded to five levels (including two sublevels) to facilitate communication of compound identification confidence in high resolution mass spectrometry studies. Further refinement in identification levels have occurred, for example to accommodate use of ion mobility spectrometry in metabolomics workflows, and alternate approaches to communicate compound identification confidence also have been developed based on identification points schema. However, neither qualitative levels of identification confidence nor quantitative scoring systems address the degree of ambiguity in compound identifications in context of the chemical space being considered, are easily automated, or are transferable between analytical platforms. In this perspective, we propose that the metabolomics and related communities consider identification probability as an approach for automated and transferable assessment of compound identification and ambiguity in metabolomics and related studies. Identification probability is defined simply as 1/N, where N is the number of compounds in a reference library or chemical space that match to an experimentally measured molecule within user-defined measurement precision(s), for example mass measurement or retention time accuracy, etc. We demonstrate the utility of identification probability in an in silico analysis of multi-property reference libraries constructed from the Human Metabolome Database and computational property predictions, provide guidance to the community in transparent implementation of the concept, and invite the community to further evaluate this concept in parallel with their current preferred methods for assessing metabolite identification confidence.

Introduction: The Biden administration is pursuing a nicotine reduction policy in the U.S. to render cigarettes less addictive. In this study, we qualitatively investigated adolescents' subjective responses to very low nicotine content (VLNC) cigarettes, reasons for incomplete adherence to using them, and their expected responses to a nicotine reduction policy., Methods: Adolescents who smoke cigarettes daily (ages 15-19; N=60) were enrolled in a three-week double-blind randomized clinical trial and assigned to smoke either normal nicotine content (NNC) or VLNC research cigarettes. Following the trial, 52 participants completed qualitative interviews about their reactions to the cigarettes and to the idea of a nicotine reduction policy. We utilized a template style approach to thematic analysis involving immersion in the data, codebook development with both inductive and deductive codes, and iterative refinement of themes., Results: Reasons for incomplete adherence to smoking only research cigarettes focused on dislike for cigarette taste and lower satisfaction compared to usual brand cigarettes. Negative evaluations of research cigarettes were common across both groups. Many participants in both groups reported that they would decrease their smoking or quit entirely if the research cigarettes were the only ones legally available for purchase in the U.S., Conclusions: Adolescents may respond to a cigarette nicotine reduction policy by decreasing their cigarette smoking and eventually quitting. These findings suggest a need for public health strategies to reduce smoking initiation and progression in young people and to encourage cessation in the context of a nicotine reduction policy., Implications: Participants' negative subjective responses and challenges with research cigarette adherence offer insight into factors that might influence young people's reactions to a real-world nicotine reduction policy. Adolescents who smoke may increase their use of alternative tobacco products, especially e-cigarettes, if this policy were implemented. Introduction: Individuals with obesity who smoke cigarettes have increased risk of morbidity and mortality. We report here the creation of a graphical user interface (GUI) for the Data Extraction for Integrated Multidimensional Spectrometry (DEIMoS) tool. DEIMoS is a Python package that processes data from high-dimensional mass spectrometry measurements. It is divided into several modules, each representing a data processing step such as peak detection, alignment, and tandem mass spectra extraction and deconvolution. The inputs for and outputs from DEIMoS can include millions of N-dimensional data points, which can be challenging to visualize in a way that is interactive, informative, and responsive. Here, we used the HoloViz Python data visualization stack, including DataShader and Param, to create an interactive visualization of the mass spectrometry data. We believe the GUI will increase the accessibility of DEIMoS and that the visualization methods could be useful for other open-source mass spectrometry tools.

Background: Menthol cigarette smoking has remained stable or increased in certain groups, despite an overall decline in cigarette smoking rates in the U.S. Understanding whether e-cigarettes alter patterns of menthol cigarette use is critical to informing efforts for reducing the public health burden of menthol cigarette smoking. This 2019-2020 laboratory pilot study evaluated whether self-administration of mint-, menthol-, or tobacco-flavored e-cigarettes would differentially impact tobacco withdrawal symptoms in e-cigarette-naïve adults who smoke menthol cigarettes daily., Methods: Participants (N=17; 35.3% Female; mean age=51.8) attended three laboratory sessions after 16-hours of tobacco abstinence. Participants self-administered a study-provided JUUL e-cigarette (0.7mL with 5% nicotine by weight) at each session in which flavor was manipulated (mint vs. menthol vs. tobacco; order randomized). Participants completed pre- and post-e-cigarette administration self-report assessments on smoking urges, nicotine withdrawal, and positive and negative affect states. The current study tests the Motivational Interviewing (MI) technical and relational hypotheses in a sample of Hispanic/Latinx adults ( N  = 276) who engage in heavy alcohol consumption. MI causal theory hypothesizes that therapist use of MI consistent skills (i.e., technical hypothesis) and embodiment of the MI Spirit (i.e., relational hypothesis) will elicit client change talk, which is a putative mechanism of positive client outcome after the session. We tested these associations in a rigorous parallel process latent growth curve mediation modeling framework. The data are from a completed randomized clinical trial of a culturally-adapted (CAMI) versus un-adapted MI targeting hazardous alcohol use and consequences. Results. The unconditional growth models for the mediator (i.e., proportion of change talk relative to sustain talk) and two study outcomes (i.e., percent of heavy drinking days; alcohol-related consequences) showed a linear effect over a 12-month period with a slower rate of growth at later timepoints. Contrary to expectations, the latent growth mediation models did not show relationships between MI-consistent skills (i.e., technical predictor) or latent MI Spirit (i.e., relational indicator) and the slope factor for proportion change talk. The slope factor for proportion change talk was also not associated with the slope factors for percent heavy drinking and consequences over follow-up. Conclusions. In this novel population for MI process analysis, the technical and relational hypotheses were not supported. Studies that are exploratory may be needed to further investigate the causal model in populations that are not often represented in MI process research.

Despite high rates of cigarette use, little attention has been paid to screening and cessation services for youth in foster care. Study aims were to test the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of a technology-based smoking cessation intervention. Study enrollment, satisfaction, and engagement were high in the intervention arm, where readiness to change also significantly increased over time. Intervention and control participants significantly reduced cigarette use at 6-month follow up, though groups did not differ. Introduction: Adolescent exposure to alcohol-related content on social media is common and associated with alcohol use and perceived norms; however, little is known about how exposure differs by the source of the content (e.g., peer or 'influencer'). The purpose of this study was to utilise qualitative methods to compare adolescent perspectives on peer- versus influencer-generated alcohol content on social media., Methods: Nine virtual semi-structured focus groups were conducted with adolescents (aged 15-19 years), following a general script aimed at ascertaining adolescent comparative perspectives on peer and influencer alcohol-related media content and the contexts in which it occurs., Results: Five main themes emerged: (i) although both influencers and peers post predominantly positively-valenced alcohol content online, adolescents perceived some differences between these posts; (ii) adolescents perceived their peers to be more cautious and strategic when posting about alcohol than influencers are; (iii) the decision to engage with peer or influencer alcohol-related posts is influenced by a number of factors; (iv) both peer and influencer posts were perceived to send the message that drinking is acceptable, normal or cool; and (v) adolescents believed they are more likely to be influenced by peers' alcohol posts than influencers' alcohol posts, with some exceptions., Discussion and Conclusions: Future studies should aim to further understand the unique attributes and circumstances in which exposure to peer and influencer alcohol-related posts impact adolescent alcohol-related cognitions and behaviours. Introduction: The current study presents the development of a scale to assess drinking behavior in response to acculturation and immigration stress., Methods: The 19-item Measure of Immigration and Acculturation Stressors (MIAS) and a parallel assessment, a Measure of Drinking in Response to Immigration and Acculturation Stressors (MDRIAS), were administered at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months in a completed randomized controlled trial testing culturally adapted motivational interviewing to reduce heavy drinking and related problems in Latinx individuals who met criteria for heavy drinking (n=149)., Results: Exploratory factor analysis of the MIAS showed best fit for a four-factor solution (Relational Stress, Perceived Ethnic Discrimination, Attenuated Aspirations, and Sense of Alienation) with 15 items. The MIAS subscales and the four corresponding MDRIAS subscales were shown to have good reliability (i.e., internal consistency, intercorrelations, and test-retest) and criterion-related validity (i.e., concurrent, convergent, and predictive)., Conclusions: These findings suggest that the MIAS can be used to assess different types of immigration and acculturation stressors for Latinx adults and the MDRIAS can be used to assess drinking in response to those experiences. While cigarette use among U.S adults has recently decreased, vulnerable subgroups continue to smoke at high rates, including individuals receiving Medicaid insurance. These individuals have also experienced treatment access disparities, highlighting the need for approaches that leverage their strong desire to quit. We conducted interviews with 100 adult primary care patients receiving Medicaid who were current tobacco users about their use, openness to technology-based interventions, and readiness to change. Most (92%) reported current cigarette use and readiness to change averaged 6.98 out of 10 (SD = 2.82). Nearly all were open to completing an iPad-based tobacco screening (95%) and brief intervention (90%) at their next appointment, while 91% and 88% were willing to talk with their provider or a cessation counselor, respectively, about the subsequent results. Results persisted across age, sex, and race/ethnicity. Openness to technology-based interventions in this population provides support for future work that may ultimately reduce disparities., (© 2022. Objective: Exposure to alcohol in the media is pervasive and may influence adolescents' perceptions and use of alcohol. The purpose of this study was to better understand how adolescents perceive alcohol-related content in both entertainment and social media, with a focus on the valence of portrayals (i.e., positive, negative) and impacts on cognitions and behaviors., Method: Participants were 40 high school students (60% female). Nine focus groups were conducted via videoconferencing, stratified by grade (9th/10th, 11th/12th) and gender. Transcripts were analyzed via template-style thematic analyses to identify themes., Results: Six themes were developed, including (a) some portrayals of alcohol may increase likelihood of using alcohol, (b) some portrayals of alcohol in the media can discourage drinking, (c) sometimes truly negative consequences of alcohol are portrayed positively or downplayed, (d) media portrayals of alcohol are perceived to be based in reality but are at times exaggerated, (e) adolescent and adult alcohol use is portrayed differently in entertainment media, and (f) the extent to which adolescents are influenced by the media may depend on their preexisting attitudes, beliefs, and education., Conclusions: Adolescents have awareness of media portrayals of alcohol, both positive and negative, and their associated impacts. Findings highlight the need for much more work to understand the conditions under which, and for whom, exposure to different types of positive portrayals of alcohol in the media translate into positive expectancies about alcohol or drinking motives. Smokers experiencing greater financial strain are less likely to successfully quit smoking, possibly due to greater severity of tobacco withdrawal. However, limited research has explored whether individual-level psychological factors (i.e., distress tolerance) may buffer the deleterious effects of financial strain on withdrawal. This study examined the main and interactive effects of financial strain and distress tolerance on tobacco withdrawal experienced prior to quitting smoking among smokers preparing to initiate a quit attempt. Fifty-nine adult smokers completed a baseline session including a financial strain measure and subjective and behavioral assessments of distress tolerance. Participants were then instructed to initiate a quit attempt, without any behavioral or pharmacological assistance, 14 days following baseline. Prequit tobacco withdrawal symptoms were assessed once per day for 3 days prior to quit date. Linear regression models tested main and interactive effects between financial strain and distress tolerance on experiences and perceptions of prequit withdrawal. Findings demonstrated significant interactions between financial strain, distress tolerance, and perceptions of tolerating withdrawal. Negative associations found between higher distress tolerance and lower perceptions of tobacco withdrawal and negative mood as being "intolerable" prior to quitting were stronger for those experiencing greater levels of financial strain. Financial strain may negatively impact one's perceived ability to tolerate mood- and tobacco-related withdrawal prior to quitting. Yet, higher distress tolerance may buffer the effects of financial strain on smoking cessation processes. Psychosocial interventions designed to promote tolerance of distress from both internal and external stressors may benefit cessation efforts among smokers experiencing high financial strain. Introduction: The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with increased negative mood in youth, and a few reports of changes in tobacco use. We sought to increase the depth of knowledge on the effects of the pandemic on early young adult mood states, access to tobacco products and tobacco use behaviors, and knowledge of risks associated with tobacco use and COVID-19 by learning more about the lived experience of the pandemic among young adults early in their smoking trajectories., Methods: Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 25 young adults ages 18-20 (M = 19) who smoked cigarettes daily or nearly every day and had used electronic cigarettes (ECs) on ≥ 2 occasions in their lifetime., Results: Our results uncovered several themes: 1) The majority of teens experienced mental health disturbances as a result of the pandemic, which manifested as depression, anxiety, and/or acute loneliness due to social isolation; 2) tobacco purchasing behaviors sometimes changed, with both greater and less access reported among participants; 3) changes in tobacco use were also reported, with some reporting increases in use, others reporting decreases, and a few reporting quitting; and 4) while some youth reported that tobacco use could increase their risk related to COVID-19, the majority reported confusion and uncertainty about how tobacco use impacted their risk., Conclusions: The themes identified specific factors that may account for the heterogeneity of impacts of the pandemic on tobacco use, and highlight the value of qualitative work for centering the lived experience of youth for understanding larger trends in substance use., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier Ltd. Background: Public health officials in the U.S. and New Zealand are considering a reduced nicotine standard for cigarettes to reduce their addictive potential. This study's aim was to evaluate the effects of nicotine reduction on the reinforcing efficacy of cigarettes in adolescents who smoke, which has implications for this policy's potential for success., Methods: Adolescents who smoked cigarettes daily (n = 66; mean age: 18.6) participated in a randomized clinical trial assessing effects of assignment to very low nicotine content (VLNC; 0.4 mg/g nicotine) or normal nicotine content (NNC; 15.8 mg/g nicotine) cigarettes. Hypothetical cigarette purchase tasks were completed at baseline and the end of Week 3 and demand curves fit to the data. Linear regressions estimated effects of nicotine content on demand for study cigarettes at baseline and Week 3 and associations between baseline demand for cigarette consumption at Week 3., Results: An extra sum of squares F-test of fitted demand curves indicated that demand (α) was more elastic among VLNC participants at baseline and Week 3 (F(2, 1016)= 35.72, p < 0.001). Adjusted linear regressions indicated demand was more elastic (ß= 1.45, p < 0.01) and maximum expenditure (O max ) lower (ß= -1.42, p-0.03) among VLNC participants at Week 3. More elastic demand for study cigarettes at baseline predicted lower consumption of cigarettes at Week 3 (p's < 0.01)., Conclusions: A nicotine reduction policy may reduce the reinforcing value of combustible cigarettes among adolescents. Introduction: As the science base around the potential benefits of a reduced-nicotine standard for cigarettes grows, information on the potential effects on adolescent smokers is a high priority. The aim of this randomized trial was to test the influence of 3-week exposure to reduced nicotine cigarettes in a sample of adolescent daily smokers., Aims and Methods: In this double-blind, two-arm, randomized controlled trial (NCT0258731), following a 1-week baseline, adolescent daily smokers not currently intending to quit (ages 15-19 years, n = 66 randomized) were urn randomized to use either very low nicotine content (VLNC; 0.4 mg/g; n = 33) or normal nicotine content (NNC, 15.8 mg/g; n = 33) research cigarettes for 3 weeks. Participants attended five study sessions at our clinical laboratory. The primary outcome was average total cigarettes smoked per day (CPD; including both study and non-study cigarettes) at week 3., Results: Stepwise regression results demonstrated that compared with NNC cigarettes (n = 31), assignment to VLNC cigarettes (n = 29), was associated with 2.4 fewer CPD on average than NNC assignment (p < .05) week 3 when controlling for covariates (p < .01, Cohen's d = 0.52 n = 60 completed all procedures). VLNC cigarettes were also associated with lower levels of craving reduction than NNC cigarettes (Questionnaire on Smoking Urges Factor 2, p < .05). No group differences were found for secondary outcomes., Conclusions: Adolescent participants assigned to VLNC use for 3 weeks smoked fewer total CPD relative to the NNC group. Overall, data suggest that a VLNC policy would reduce cigarette smoking in adolescents who smoke, but high rates of incomplete adherence suggest that youth may seek alternative sources of nicotine in this scenario., Implications: The US Food and Drug Administration may enact a reduced-nicotine product standard that would affect all commercially available cigarettes. One important population affected by this policy would be adolescents who smoke. This study, the first clinical trial of VLNC cigarettes in adolescents, demonstrates that adolescents switched to VLNC cigarettes for 3 weeks reduced their CPD relative to the normal-nicotine cigarette control group, without leading to increased respiratory symptoms or increased withdrawal. The Biden Administration is considering a low nicotine product standard for cigarettes. This qualitative study examined reactions to a nicotine reduction policy among adolescents and young adults (AYA) who smoke cigarettes. After completing a lab study involving masked exposure either to low nicotine or normal nicotine research cigarettes and unmasked exposure to e-cigarettes varying in nicotine concentration and flavor, we conducted follow-up semi-structured interviews (N = 25) to explore participants' knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of a low nicotine product standard and their anticipated tobacco use behavior after policy implementation. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, double-coded, and analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Nearly half of participants supported the policy because they thought it would prevent young people from starting smoking and/or would help people quit. Reasons some participants opposed the policy included beliefs that adults should have the choice to smoke or that a nicotine reduction policy is counterintuitive because the government benefits from cigarette sales. Others believed the policy would be ineffective because youth could circumvent the policy (e.g., illicit market) or would increase their smoking to maintain the same nicotine level. Almost half of participants said they would quit smoking while the other half said they would continue smoking, although potentially reduce their smoking. Purpose: Integrating Minority Stress Theory and Bagge and Sher's Theoretical Framework of the Alcohol-Suicide Attempt Relation, this study aimed to test whether experiencing both minority stress and suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) had a greater strength of association with Latinx and Black sexual minority youth (SMY)'s alcohol use compared with that of White SMY. Methods: Using data on 2341 non-Latinx Black, Latinx, and non-Latinx White SMY from the 2015 and 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Surveys, we tested the prevalence of STBs, victimization, and alcohol use for Black and Latinx participants compared with White participants. Multivariate logistic regression analyses tested the main effects of STBs, victimization, and race/ethnicity on alcohol use. Finally, interaction terms assessed the interaction among STBs, victimization, and race/ethnicity on alcohol use. Results: The results supported our hypothesis, based on Minority Stress Theory, that experiencing victimization would be associated with greater alcohol use. Results also supported Bagge and Sher's theoretical framework showing that suicide plan and attempts were associated with greater alcohol use. When taking all of these stressors into account, results showed that Latinx SMY who experienced victimization had greater current prevalence of alcohol use than their White counterparts. However, Latinx SMY who were victimized and experienced suicidal ideation reported lower alcohol use than White SMY. Conclusion: These findings support the double jeopardy and resiliency hypotheses, which suggest that minority stressors have differing associations for each racial/ethnic SMY group's alcohol use. More research is needed that helps to disentangle the protective and risk factors for alcohol use among Black and Latinx SMY.

Computational methods for creating in silico libraries of molecular descriptors (e.g., collision cross sections) are becoming increasingly prevalent due to the limited number of authentic reference materials available for traditional library building. These so-called "reference-free metabolomics" methods require sampling sets of molecular conformers in order to produce high accuracy property predictions. Due to the computational cost of the subsequent calculations for each conformer, there is a need to sample the most relevant subset and avoid repeating calculations on conformers that are nearly identical. The goal of this study is to introduce a heuristic method of finding the most dissimilar conformers from a larger population in order to help speed up reference-free calculation methods and maintain a high property prediction accuracy. Finding the set of the n items most dissimilar from each other out of a larger population becomes increasingly difficult and computationally expensive as either n or the population size grows large. Because there exists a pairwise relationship between each item and all other items in the population, finding the set of the n most dissimilar items is different than simply sorting an array of numbers. For instance, if you have a set of the most dissimilar n = 4 items, one or more of the items from n = 4 might not be in the set n = 5. An exact solution would have to search all possible combinations of size n in the population exhaustively. We present an open-source software called similarity downselection (SDS), written in Python and freely available on GitHub. SDS implements a heuristic algorithm for quickly finding the approximate set(s) of the n most dissimilar items. We benchmark SDS against a Monte Carlo method, which attempts to find the exact solution through repeated random sampling. We show that for SDS to find the set of n most dissimilar conformers, our method is not only orders of magnitude faster, but it is also more accurate than running Monte Carlo for 1,000,000 iterations, each searching for set sizes n = 3-7 out of a population of 50,000. We also benchmark SDS against the exact solution for example small populations, showing that SDS produces a solution close to the exact solution in these instances. Using theoretical approaches, we also demonstrate the constraints of the greedy algorithm and its efficacy as a ratio to the exact solution.

Introduction: Motivational interviewing (MI) theory and process research highlights the role of therapist technical and relational behaviors in predicting client in-session statements for or against behavior change (i.e., change and sustain talk, respectively). These client statements, in turn, have been shown to predict intervention outcomes. The current study examines sequential associations between therapist behaviors and client change and sustain talk in a sample of Latinx individuals who engage in heavy alcohol consumption., Data: Data are from a completed randomized clinical trial of a culturally adapted (CAMI) versus unadapted MI targeting alcohol use and consequences among Latinx individuals., Method: The study collected observational coding data with the Motivational Interviewing Skill Code (MISC 2.5, i.e., therapist behaviors and global ratings) and the Client Language Assessment - Proximal/Distal (CLA-PD, i.e., client language). Frequentist and Bayesian sequential analyses examined the relationship among nine different categories of therapist behaviors and three different categories of client language (i.e., change talk, sustain talk, neutral). We examined odds ratios and conditional probabilities for the direction, magnitude, and significance of the association between the use of MI technical behaviors and subsequent client statements about change. The study compared these same transitional associations between low/average (i.e., <4) and high (i.e., ≥4) MI Spirit sessions., Results: The pattern of results was replicated across both analytic frameworks. Questions and reflections about change talk versus sustain talk versus neutral statements showed greater odds of predicting the intended client response (i.e., change talk, sustain talk, neutral, respectively) compared to other possible client responses. Conditional probabilities for these transitions were high, ranging from 0.55 to.88. The magnitude of certain technical transitions significantly differed between low/average and high MI Spirit sessions., Conclusions: Analyses supported the hypothesized associations between therapist use of technical MI behaviors and client change language within this Latinx sample. Background : The drinking of social network members has been consistently associated with personal drinking. However, less attention has been paid to emerging adult populations outside of four-year college students and to potential moderators of this relationship. In a sample of emerging adults who never attended four-year college, this research examined: 1) the compositional characteristics of the social networks, 2) the association between the drinking of network members and personal drinking, and 3) how the association between network and personal drinking was moderated by relationship type (e.g., friend, parents, significant other). Methods : Data was provided by a sample of 525 emerging adults who participated in Qualtrics Panels. Results : In this noncollege sample, the composition of the social network was diverse, with roughly one-third of network members being friends and a little less than half being family members. Parents tended to consume alcohol more frequently than friends and significant others, but participants consumed alcohol more frequently with friends and significant others. Furthermore, drinking among friends and significant others tended to have stronger associations with personal alcohol use than drinking among parents. However, relationship type did not moderate the association between drinking with network members and personal alcohol use. Conclusions : Because of this, interventions need to be delivered to drinking groups.

Background: Sexual minority youth report high rates of substance use compared to heterosexual youth. Stigma can diminish perceptions of future success and life satisfaction and contribute to elevated substance use. This study examined whether experiences of enacted stigma (i.e., discrimination) and substance use among sexual minority and heterosexual youth were indirectly associated through perceived chances for success and life satisfaction. Method: In a sample of 487 adolescents who indicated their sexual identity (58% female, M age = 16.0, 20% sexual minority), we assessed substance use status and factors that might explain sexual minority disparities in substance use. Using structural equation modeling, we examined indirect associations between sexual minority status and substance use status through these factors. Results: Compared to heterosexual youth, sexual minority youth reported greater stigma, which was associated with both lower perceived chances for success and life satisfaction, which were in turn associated with greater likelihood of substance use. Conclusions: Findings highlight the importance of attending to stigma, perceived chances for success, and general life satisfaction to understand and intervene to prevent substance use among sexual minority youth.

There has been long-standing interest in a reduced-nicotine product standard for combusted tobacco, which is within the regulatory purview of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In weighing whether to establish this standard, it is important to consider potential responses among people who are at elevated risk for tobacco-related health harms. In this narrative review, we summarize studies of very low nicotine content (VLNC) cigarettes conducted between 2010 and 2021 in groups that the FDA has identified as vulnerable populations. Studies conducted to date in adults with mental health conditions, adults with opioid use disorder, socioeconomically-disadvantaged adults, and youth or young adults indicate that immediate switching to VLNC cigarettes decreases smoking, with minimal or no unintended negative consequences. Few studies have investigated the effects of VLNC cigarettes in racial or ethnic minorities, people who smoke menthol cigarettes, and pregnant women, but initial findings suggest that responses of these individuals are similar to responses observed in other vulnerable populations. We are not aware of studies that have investigated VLNC cigarettes in military/veteran populations, sexual or gender minority individuals, or people living in underserved rural environments. Future research directions include understanding how to promote cessation in the context of a reduced-nicotine standard, and how to correct VLNC misperceptions in vulnerable populations. Background: Among people without psychiatric disorders who smoke, very low nicotine content (VLNC) cigarette use reduces cigarette reinforcement. Whether this is true of people with serious mental illness (SMI) who smoke is unknown. Using a hypothetical purchase task, we compared the effects of 6-week use of VLNC versus normal nicotine content (NNC) cigarettes on study cigarette and usual brand (UB) cigarette reinforcement among people with SMI who smoke., Methods: After a baseline period of UB cigarette use, participants with SMI (n = 58) were randomized to use NNC cigarettes (15.8 mg nicotine/g tobacco) or VLNC cigarettes (0.4 mg/g) for 6 weeks. At Week 6, they completed the CPT for both their assigned study cigarette and UB. The groups were compared on demand intensity (number of cigarettes purchased at no cost) and elasticity (rate of decline in demand as price increases) using extra sum-of-squares F-tests. The effects of treatment on demand indices while controlling for covariates were assessed using hierarchical regression., Results: At Week 6, intensity of demand for study cigarettes was lower and elasticity was higher for the VLNC group relative to the NNC group (p < 0.0001). Furthermore, intensity of demand for UB cigarettes was lower for participants in the VLNC group relative to participants in the NNC group (p < 0.01). When controlling for baseline cigarettes per day, intensity remained significantly different for study cigarettes and usual brand cigarettes at Week 6., Conclusion: A nicotine reduction policy may reduce cigarette reinforcement in this vulnerable population., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Substance use in young adulthood and polysubstance users (PSU), in particular, pose unique risks for adverse consequences. Prior research on young adult PSU has identified multiple classes of users, but most work has focused on college students. We examined PSU patterns by age and college attendance during young adulthood in two nationally representative samples. Using National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC) Wave 1 and NESARC-III data sets, multigroup latent class analysis (MG-LCA) was employed to examine PSU patterns based on age (18-24 vs. 25-34) and determine whether solutions were similar (i.e., statistically invariant) by college attendance/graduation. Classes were estimated by binary past-year use of sedatives, tranquilizers, opioids/painkillers, heroin, amphetamines/stimulants, cocaine, hallucinogens, club drugs, and inhalants, and past-year frequency of alcohol, cigarette, and cannabis use. PSU patterns are largely replicated across waves. Model fit supported 3-class solutions in each MG-LCA: Low frequency-limited-range PSU (alcohol, cigarettes, and cannabis only), medium-to-high frequency limited-range PSU (alcohol, cigarettes, and cannabis only), and extended-range PSU (ER PSU; all substances). Apart from one model, MG-LCA solutions were not invariant by college attendance/graduation, suggesting important differences between these groups. Except for alcohol, cannabis, and cigarette use frequency, results showed that probabilities of illicit and prescription drug use declined in the older age group. Findings also supported examining college and noncollege youth separately when studying PSU. ER PSU may be uniquely vulnerable to coingesting substances, particularly for nongraduates, warranting future research to classify patterns of simultaneous PSU and identify predictors and consequences of high-risk combinations (e.g., alcohol and opioids). Introduction: Reducing the nicotine content of cigarettes is a promising policy intervention to decrease cigarette dependence among people who smoke. Randomized trials support the potential efficacy of a reduced nicotine product standard for cigarettes. However, interpretation of such trials is challenged by incomplete adherence to the randomized treatment assignment, as some participants may continue to use commercial cigarettes not provided by the trial. The current study examined prevalence and predictors of non-adherence among trial participants with serious mental illness (SMI)., Aims and Methods: Adults with SMI who smoke daily and were not trying to quit (N = 58) were randomized to receive very low nicotine content (VLNC) or normal nicotine content cigarettes over 6 weeks. We investigated predictors of biologically assessed non-adherence in participants assigned to VLNC cigarettes (n = 30). Predictors included subjective responses to VLNC cigarettes, baseline nicotine dependence and dependence motives, and psychiatric symptom severity. We fit a series of linear models regressing non-adherence metrics onto covariates (gender; menthol preference) and focal predictors., Results: Nearly all participants (96%) were estimated to be less than completely adherent to VLNC cigarettes. Lower enjoyment ratings of respiratory tract sensations of VLNC cigarettes predicted a greater degree of non-adherence (b = -.40, SE = .14, 95% CI: -0.71, -0.10)., Conclusions: Less positive subjective response to smoking VLNC cigarettes was the only significant predictor of incomplete adherence among individuals with SMI, consistent with prior research in a general population sample. This suggests the potential for shared strategies to help different smoking populations adjust to a reduced nicotine product standard., Implications: Results offer preliminary insight into potential barriers to adherence in SMI populations. Adherence might be enhanced by supplementing VLNC cigarettes with alternative sources of non-combusted nicotine, paired with educational campaigns to encourage quitting or switching to less harmful products. Introduction: Misperceptions about nicotine's contribution to smoking-related health harms could complicate efforts to reduce the public health burden of smoking. Study goals were to describe nicotine knowledge among adults who smoke and investigate whether misperceiving nicotine as a source of health harm was associated with beneficial health behaviors, or lower uptake of using less harmful sources of nicotine to support smoking cessation attempts., Method: This study used longitudinal data from 9140 adults who participated in four waves of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study and were current smokers during the first wave. Logistic regressions estimated odds ratios for correct responses across six aspects of nicotine knowledge assessed in Wave 4. Longitudinal models estimated associations between misperceptions and cigarette consumption, and odds of making a quit attempt; self-reported cessation; e-cigarette use; and use of NRT or e-cigarettes to support quit attempts., Results: Participants who were non-White, older, and had lower educational attainment or income tended to be least knowledgeable about nicotine. Misperceiving nicotine as harmful to health was associated with increased odds of quit attempts (AOR: 1.12, 95% CI: 1.03, 1.23), lower odds of cessation success (AOR: 0.84, 95% CI: 0.73, 0.98) and e-cigarette use (AOR: 0.79, 95% CI: 0.72, 0.86), and lower odds of using NRT (AOR: 0.84, 95% CI: 0.71, 0.99) or e-cigarettes to support quit attempts (AOR: 0.59, 95% CI: 0.49, 0.71)., Conclusion: Harm reduction efforts may be impeded by misperceptions about nicotine. Further work should evaluate the effects of correcting such misperceptions through public education., Implications: This study provides longitudinal evidence that among adult smokers, misperceiving nicotine as a primary cause of smoking-related diseases may be associated with reduced cessation success and lower likelihood of using less harmful nicotine products. These misperceptions may therefore impede efforts to encourage smokers ready to quit to use evidence-based cessation support such as nicotine replacement during quit attempts and limit the success of policies designed to shift smokers to less harmful sources of nicotine. We present DEIMoS: Data Extraction for Integrated Multidimensional Spectrometry, a Python application programming interface (API) and command-line tool for high-dimensional mass spectrometry data analysis workflows that offers ease of development and access to efficient algorithmic implementations. Functionality includes feature detection, feature alignment, collision cross section (CCS) calibration, isotope detection, and MS/MS spectral deconvolution, with the output comprising detected features aligned across study samples and characterized by mass, CCS, tandem mass spectra, and isotopic signature. Notably, DEIMoS operates on N -dimensional data, largely agnostic to acquisition instrumentation; algorithm implementations simultaneously utilize all dimensions to (i) offer greater separation between features, thus improving detection sensitivity, (ii) increase alignment/feature matching confidence among data sets, and (iii) mitigate convolution artifacts in tandem mass spectra. We demonstrate DEIMoS with LC-IMS-MS/MS metabolomics data to illustrate the advantages of a multidimensional approach in each data processing step.

Background: Lower levels of education are strongly associated with negative health outcomes. The current study examined the degree to which those without a history of 4-year college attendance experience social stigmatization of their educational status and if these experiences are associated with mental health symptoms., Methods: Data was obtained from 488 emerging adults who never attended 4-year college using Qualtrics Panels., Results: 79.4% of participants agreed to one of the six statements that not attending 4-year college is stigmatized, and 71.8% endorsed experiencing at least one form of discrimination. Higher levels of education-related stigma and more frequent experiences of education-related discrimination was associated with greater past-month anxiety and depression symptoms., Conclusions: These findings could serve to increase awareness regarding the unique and significant discrimination faced by young adults who do not attend 4-year college and identify specific areas of intervention that can help these young adults cope with the effects of stigma and discrimination., (© 2022. We describe the Mass Spectrometry Adduct Calculator (MSAC), an automated Python tool to calculate the adduct ion masses of a parent molecule. Here, adduct refers to a version of a parent molecule [M] that is charged due to addition or loss of atoms and electrons resulting in a charged ion, for example, [M + H] + . MSAC includes a database of 147 potential adducts and adduct/neutral loss combinations and their mass-to-charge ratios ( m / z ) as extracted from the NIST/EPA/NIH Mass Spectral Library (NIST17), Global Natural Products Social Molecular Networking Public Spectral Libraries (GNPS), and MassBank of North America (MoNA). The calculator relies on user-selected subsets of the combined database to calculate expected m / z for adducts of molecules supplied as formulas. This tool is intended to help researchers create identification libraries to collect evidence for the presence of molecules in mass spectrometry data. While the included adduct database focuses on adducts typically detected during liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses, users may supply their own lists of adducts and charge states for calculating expected m / z . We also analyzed statistics on adducts from spectra contained in the three selected mass spectral libraries. MSAC is freely available at https://github.com/pnnl/MSAC.
