Abstract

Nonlinear photoluminescence (N-PL) is a broadband photon emission arising from non-equilibrium electron distribution generated at the surface of metallic nanostructures by an ultrafast pulsed laser illumination. N-PL is sensitive to surface morphology, local electromagnetic field strength, and electronic band structure making it relevant to probe optically excited nanoscale plasmonic systems. It also has been key to access the complex multiscale time dynamics ruling electron thermalization. Here, we show that the surface plasmons mediated N-PL emitted by a gold nanowire can be modified by an electrical architecture featuring a nanogap. Upon voltage activation, we observe that N-PL becomes dependent to the electrical transport dynamics and can thus be locally modulated. This finding brings an electrical leverage to externally control the photoluminescence generated from metal nanostructures, and constitutes an asset for the development of emerging nanoscale interface devices managing photons and electrons.

Abstract

Electrically-contacted optical gap antennas are nanoscale interface devices enabling the transduction between photons and electrons. This new generation of device, usually constituted of metal elements (e.g. gold), captures visible to near infrared electromagnetic radiation and rectifies the incident energy in a direct-current (DC) electrical signal. However, light absorption by the metal may lead to additional thermal effects which need to be taken into account to understand the complete photo-response of the devices. The purpose of this communication is to discriminate the contribution of laser-induced thermo-electric effects in the photo-assisted electronic transport. We show case our analysis with the help of electromigrated devices.

Abstract

Initiated as a cable-replacement solution, short-range wireless power transfer has rapidly become ubiquitous in the development of modern high-data throughput networking in centimeter to meter accessibility range. Wireless technology is now penetrating a higher level of system integration for chip-to-chip and on-chip radiofrequency interconnects. However, standard CMOS integrated millimeter-wave antennas have typical size commensurable with the operating wavelength, and are thus an unrealistic solution for downsizing transmitters and receivers to the micrometer and nanometer scale. In this letter, we demonstrate a light-in and electrical-signal-out, on-chip wireless near infrared link between a 200 nm optical antenna and a sub-nanometer rectifying antenna converting the transmitted optical energy into direct current (d.c.). The co-integration of subwavelength optical functional devices with an electronic transduction offers a disruptive solution to interface photons and electrons at the nanoscale for on-chip wireless optical interconnects.

Abstract

Nanoscale electronics and photonics are among the most promising research areas providing functional nano-components for data transfer and signal processing. By adopting metal-based optical antennas as a disruptive technological vehicle, we demonstrate that these two device-generating technologies can be interfaced to create an electronically-driven self-emitting unit. This nanoscale plasmonic transmitter operates by injecting electrons in a contacted tunneling antenna feedgap. Under certain operating conditions, we show that the antenna enters a highly nonlinear regime in which the energy of the emitted photons exceeds the quantum limit imposed by the applied bias. We propose a model based upon the spontaneous emission of hot electrons that correctly reproduces the experimental findings. The electron-fed optical antennas described here are critical devices for interfacing electrons and photons, enabling thus the development of optical transceivers for on-chip wireless broadcasting of information at the nanoscale.

Abstract

In this paper we describe a nonlinear imaging method employed to spatially map the occurrence of constrictions occurring on an electrically-stressed gold nanowire. The approach consists at measuring the influence of a tightly focused ultrafast pulsed laser on the electronic transport in the nanowire. We found that structural defects distributed along the nanowire are efficient nonlinear optical sources of radiation and that the differential conductance is significantly decreased when the laser is incident on such electrically-induced morphological changes. Abstract

Micro-ring resonators made of titanium dioxide were decorated with local light sources comprising CdSe/CdS colloidal quantum dot aggregates. The active micro-resonators are operated to achieve efficient evanescent excitation of nearby co-planar integrated waveguides. Coupled-mode analysis and numerical simulations are used to capture the dynamic of the optical interaction between locally activated resonators and integrated waveguides. In this context, we exemplify the key role of resonator intrinsic loss. Next, we show that locally activated or bus-waveguide excited resonators are in optimum waveguide interaction for the same so-called critical coupling condition, although the physical origin of this property is different for each configuration. More importantly, we found that a locally activated resonator is a fabrication imperfection tolerant configuration for the coupling light of local sources into waveguides. This remarkable property originates from the opposite change of the power cycling into the resonator and the waveguide coupling efficiency as a function of the resonator-waveguide separation gap. By operating an 8-μm-radius ring resonator with loaded quality factors around Q = 2100, we experimentally demonstrate a 5.5-dB enhancement of the power coupled into the output waveguide compared to a direct local source waveguide excitation.

Abstract

Electron beam imaging is a common technique used for characterizing the morphology of plasmonic nanostructures. During the imaging process, the electron beam interacts with traces of organic material in the chamber and produces a well-know layer of amorphous carbon over the specimen under investigation. In this paper, we investigate the effect of this carbon adsorbate on the spectral position of the surface plasmon in individual gold nanoparticles as a function of electron exposure dose. We find an optimum dose for which the plasmonic response of the nanoparticle is not affected by the imaging process. The final publication is available at link.springer.com, Comment: 7 figures

Abstract

In contrast to the high performances of long-range, high-speed optical information transfer, optical information processing remains outperformed by electronic microprocessing. The two mains reasons are the lack of gain medium that hampers the development of an optical analogue of the transistor and the lack of compactness of the approaches proposed so far. Here, we demonstrate a new concept of the design of all-optical elementary computing units based on the shaping of plasmonic modal landscape in micrometric on-chip 2D cavities to realize reconfigurable Arithmetic and Logic Units (ALU). Our interconnect-free devices perform multi-bit logic gate functions in a single cavity without ALU cascading, therefore obviating loss in vias and so the need for gain to restore the binary signal. Moreover, an astute cavity design allows to reconfigure a single cavity into multiple logic functions, including a first full adder. The main challenge on the way to increasing the functional Boolean complexity is the design of the cavity shape and of the excitation/detection parameters for which an approach based on artificial intelligence will be implemented.

Abstract

ITO is a transparent conductive material commonly used in everyday life and for its potential in material research. In nonlinear optics for instance, ITO has shown great capabilities for harmonic generation in its epsilon-near-zero configuration. In this article, we demonstrate a completely new nonlinear behaviour from ITO thin layers. After a Ga-Focused Ion Beam (FIB) milling of the thin film, we observe nonlinear photoluminescence produced for tightly focused femtosecond pulses. The signal shares strong similarities with that commonly detected from noble metals. We show that the arising of this nonlinear photoluminescence originates from the radiative decay of metal-like hot electron distribution in the material and is associated to a modification of the optical properties by the Ga ions.

Abstract

The electromagnetic properties of ordered hole nanostructures in very thin metal films are characterized using CdSe/CdS nanocrystals (NCs) as nanoprobes. The characterization of the local density of optical states (LDOS) on the nanostructure is possible by the measurement of their photoluminescence decay rate. Statistical measurements are performed in the far field to show the average increase of optical modes. A determinist approach using an active single NC nanoprobe in the near field gives access to a more precise characterization of the LDOS. The optical properties of the structure come from the coupling between localized surface plasmons created by the holes and surface plasmon polaritons. A strong concentration of optical modes is observed around the holes thanks to the active near-field nanoprobe. With different NC orientations, the strong influence of the component perpendicular to the surface in the very near field of the LDOS is observed. Finite differential time domain simulations of the different components of the electric field in the very near field of the structure confirm that the localization of the electric field around the holes is only due to the normal component as observed with the nanoprobe.

Abstract

We observe anomalous visible to near-infrared electromagnetic emission from electrically driven atomic-size point contacts. We show that the number of photons released strongly depends on the quantized conductance steps of the contact. Counterintuitively, the light intensity features an exponential decay dependence with the injected electrical power. We propose an analytical model for the light emission considering an out-of-equilibrium electron distribution. We treat photon emission as a Bremsstrahlung process resulting from hot electrons colliding with the metal boundary, and find qualitative accord with the experimental data.

Electrically biased metal nanostructures are at the core of innovative multifunctional integrated devices that control the flow of electrons and photons at the nanoscale. They are based on plasmonic structures that create strongly confined fields, typically associated with large temperature gradients. These thermal effects may generate artifact responses detrimental to the desired operation. We show here how a biasing polarity and a local optical excitation asymmetry of a generic geometry – a nanoscale constriction – interplay thermally to modify the diffusive electron transport in out-of-equilibrium conditions. Our experimental results are accompanied with computational electromagnetism and multiphysics simulations.

After a Ga-Focused Ion Beam (FIB) milling of the thin film, we observe nonlinear photoluminescence produced for tightly focused femtosecond pulses. The signal shares strong similarities with that commonly detected from noble metals. We show that the arising of this nonlinear photoluminescence originates from the radiative decay of metal-like hot electron distribution in the material and is associated to a modification of the optical properties by the Ga ions. Abstract

In contrast to the high performances of long-range, high-speed optical information transfer, optical information processing remains outperformed by electronic microprocessing. The two mains reasons are the lack of gain medium that hampers the development of an optical analogue of the transistor and the lack of compactness of the approaches proposed so far. Here, we demonstrate a new concept of the design of all-optical elementary computing units based on the shaping of plasmonic modal landscape in micrometric on-chip 2D cavities to realize reconfigurable Arithmetic and Logic Units (ALU). Our interconnect-free devices perform multi-bit logic gate functions in a single cavity without ALU cascading, therefore obviating loss in vias and so the need for gain to restore the binary signal. Moreover, an astute cavity design allows to reconfigure a single cavity into multiple logic functions, including a first full adder. The main challenge on the way to increasing the functional Boolean complexity is the design of the cavity shape and of the excitation/detection parameters for which an approach based on artificial intelligence will be implemented. Abstract

Processing information with conventional integrated circuits remains beset by the interconnect bottleneck: circuits made of smaller active devices need longer and narrower interconnects, which have become the prime source of power dissipation and clock rate saturation. Optical interchip communication provides a fast and energy-saving option that still misses a generic on-chip optical information processing by interconnect-free and reconfigurable Boolean arithmetic logic units (ALU). Considering metal plasmons as a platform with dual optical and electronic compatibilities, we forge interconnect-free, ultracompact plasmonic Boolean logic gates and reconfigure them, at will, into computing ALU without any redesign nor cascaded circuitry. We tailor the plasmon mode landscape of a single 2.6 μm2planar gold cavity and demonstrate the operation and facile reconfiguration of all 2-input logic gates. The potential for higher complexity of the same logic unit is shown by a multi-input excitation and a phase control to realize an arithmetic 2-bit adder.

Abstract

cited By 0; International audience; Surface plasmon modes propagating in metal nanowires are conveniently excited by focusing a laser beam on one extremity of the nanowire. We find that the precise positioning of the nanowire inside the focal region drastically influences the excitation efficiency of the different SPP modes sustained by the plasmonic waveguide. We demonstrate a spatially selective excitation of bound and leaky surface plasmon modes with excitation maps that strongly depend on the orientation of the incident linear polarization. We discuss this modal selection by considering the inhomogeneous distribution of the field components inside the focus. Our finding provides a way to discriminate the effective indices of the modes offering thus an increased coupling agility for future nanowire-based plasmonic architectures.
