7. The Comparison of Self-Efficacy Belief Levels on Anatomy Education between the Undergraduate Students from Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Department and the Associate Students from Vocational School of Health Services in Western Black Sea Region

Abstract

Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation (PTR) undergraduate degree departments and Vocational School of Health Services (VSHS) associate degree departments train healthcare professionals, which is important for both continuance of human health and treatment of various illnesses. Anatomic structures underlie the illnesses that these departments treat and care. Therefore, the graduates of these departments should have favorable knowledge of anatomy. The aim of this study is to evaluate and compare the self-efficacy belief levels about anatomy education of PTR students as undergraduate and VSHS students as associate degree. 94 students from PTR department (age: 21.94 ± 1.19) and 100 students from VSHS (age: 20.16 ± 1.58) have participated in the study. Data collection questionnaire (gender, age, geographical region where he/she came from, residential place) and Anatomy Self-Efficacy Belief scale (ASEB) have been implemented on the participants. As a consequence, when the Anatomy Self-Efficacy Belief levels of undergraduate and associate degree students are compared, no significant difference has been found in total (p>0.05). However, when the answers given to the questions in self-efficacy belief level test are compared separately, a significant difference has been found in 4 questions (p<0.05). The reason for this is that the students of PTR department have more hours of anatomy lesson per week compared to the students of VSHS. As ASEB gets better, profession is done better in view of anatomy. This will help the graduates of both departments do their profession better and be more helpful to their patients.

16. Effect of Chronic Unpredictable Mild Stress on Hippocampus and Serum Markers in Rats.

Abstract

Objective: Unpredictable stress is a common factor that we encounter in our daily lives. In this context, we wanted to investigate the morphological effects of a chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) model on rat hippocampus and serum levels of brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). Materials and Methods: This study was carried out on 16 Wistar albino rats which were divided into control and experiment groups. The CUMS model protocol was applied, and the morphological structures of the hippocampus were examined. The serum GFAP/BDNF levels were measured by ELISA method. Results: The mean BDNF level was 1.65 ± 0.17 ng/mL in the control group and 2.25 ± 0.29 ng/mL in the CUMS group. The mean GFAP level was 3.04 ± 0.45 ng/mL in the control group and 2.96 ± 0.58 ng/mL in the CUMS group. When the polymorph cell layer (PCL) in gyrus dentatus was examined; the mean number of cells in the control group was 20 ± 1.38 for the left PCL and 17 ± 1.35 for the right PCL. In the stress group; the mean number of cells in the polymorph cell layer of gyrus dentatus was 27 ± 2.08 cells for the left side and 23 ± 2.01 for the right side. Conclusions: As a result, morphological changes were observed in the gyrus dentatus region which has an important role in memory formation. Abstract

Aim: The skin is a multifunctional organ that covers up the entire surface of the body. Material properties such as hyperelasticity, viscoelasticity and plasticity are very important for the development of new biological materials. The main focus of this study is to investigate the biomechanical properties of the dermis and to examine how these vary according to different body parts. Materials and Methods: Skin samples were dissected from various parts of the body. All skin samples were tested in uniaxial tension parallel to their long axis. A strengthelongation curve was obtained and the maximum strength and maximum elongation values were determined from this curve for each tensile test performed. Reaction forces and displacements were determined by software. Results: The results of our study showed a statistically significant difference in the evaluation between the scalp, face, upper and lower extremities for elastic modulus, tensile strength and thickness. It has been observed that the elastic modulus, tensile strength and thickness values vary depending on the topographic region of the body. According to our results, the upper extremity showed the highest elastic modulus among all regions (42.70 ± 8.92 MPa). The highest tensile strength was also measured for the upper extremity skin and its value was determined as 17.72 ± 4.00 MPa. Conclusion: Data obtained from this study may provide valuable information for modeling purposes, basic data for tissue grafts and comparison of tissue characteristics after head trauma or forensic examinations. Abstract

Statistics is an important part of our life when it comes to economy, education, sport, politics and research. Research is a primary job for the ones pursuing academic career and statistics is one of the basic components of a research. Metaphor is used as an equivalent to figurative expression (‘mecaz’ in Turkish language). Study group is composed of 19 females (age 27.7) and 40 males (age 30.85) - 59 students in total. Demographic information of participants was collected. Participants were provided with questionnaire in order to assess their metaphorical creation whereby they were asked to fill in the sentence - “statistics is like/ similar to …, because…” - with metaphor. The study has collected total of 59 metaphors in 6 categories. The most created metaphor is in ‘discovering/ revealing’ category. 42.5% of Master’s students and 25% of PhD students are in this category. Metaphors created by graduate students are representing their views about statistics course and hence their view about importance of research. The category ‘discovering/ revealing’, the one with the most created metaphor of this study, is the main concept of science. Consequently, good knowledge of statistics is needed for graduate students to conduct research.

Abstract

The Anatomy is the most basic lecture of the departments that give health education. The human anatomy is need to be comprehended to success in nursing field. Anatomy subjects are taught independently in each committee in Nursing Department that is in School of Health in Kocaeli University. The aim of our study is assessment of the impact of the Anatomy lectures on Anatomy Self-Efficacy Beliefs of nursing students. Totally 95 students (mean of ages 19,13 ± 1,595) who are 25 boys (%26,3) and 70 girls (%73,7) attended to our research. Anatomy Self-Efficacy Belief (ASEB) scale and personal information survey(age, gender, the geographical region that he/she came from, the place that he/she resides) are applied to these students. Statistically, when the relation between ASEB levels of the students and their residences was assessed, it is found that there is a significant difference on between the ASEB levels of the students who reside in dormitory and that of the students who reside at home (p

Abstract

Formaldehyde (FA), which is an indispensable chemical substance in anatomy and pathology, is a very harmful substance for living things. In our study, the purpose was to investigate the changes in behavior of rats exposed to subchronic formaldehyde with open field test. We divided 24 Wistar-Albino rats into 3 groups. The first group (n=8) was identified as the control group, and normal air breathing was ensured. Low-dose FA (mean 1 ppm) was inhaled in the second group, and high-dose FA (mean 10 ppm) was inhaled in the third group. FA exposure was done for 4 hours, 12 weeks, and 5 days a week. The rats were subjected to open field test during the first week and the last week of FA exposure. We observed significant decreases in the number of vertical movements and grooming in rats in the experimental group compared to the control group in the open field test (p < 0.05). We did not detect any significant differences in horizontal movements and defecation counts (p > 0.05). As a conclusion, we can argue that FA causes changes in the behaviors of rats regardless of dose and duration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: Many sports are associated with a variety of peripheral nervous system injuries that are specific to that particular sport. Research question: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of playing basketball on nerves in the elbow region. Type of study: This is a comparative study that focuses on nerve conduction velocity differences between basketball players and sedentary persons. Methods: The study included 20 male basketball players with a mean (and SD) age, height and weight of 22.5 (3.0) years, 190.3 (5.7) cm and 91.6 (12.4) kg, respectively. The age, height and weight of 20 male non-active controls were 22.3 (1.7) years, 172.6 (6.2) cm and 75.7 (8.4) kg, respectively. Limb length and the perimeters of the dominant arm and forearm were measured for each subject. The neurophysiological study consisted of measuring motor and sensory nerve conduction of the median, ulnar and radial nerves. Both the motor and sensory conduction velocities of the median nerve were significantly delayed in the dominant arm of the basketball players compared to controls. In addition, the sensory conduction velocities of both the ulnar and radial nerves were significantly delayed in the dominant arm of the basketball players compared to controls. Results: There were no statistical differences between the dominant and non-dominant arms of the basketball players for the sensory and motor conduction velocities of the median, ulnar and radial nerves. The basketball players were taller and heavier than controls; in addition, their dominant upper limb length was longer, and their arm and forearm perimeters were greater than controls. Conclusions: This study shows that basketball players have a tendency toward developing median (motor and sensory), ulnar (sensory) and radial (sensory) nerve damage in the elbow region, despite being asymptomatic. The mechanism of delayed motor and sensory conduction velocities in the median nerve may involve both traction and compression induced by the median nerve stretching across the upper extremity during movement. Entrapment of the ulnar nerve due to a hypertrophic medial head of the triceps or flexor carpi ulnaris may be the cause of the delayed conduction velocities in this study. Forceful repetitive movements and an overload of the triceps muscle are thought to be primary etiological factors in the delayed radial nerve sensory conduction velocity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

: The study aimed to determine the CCl4-induced liver fibrosis model in pinealectomized rats and biochemically, immunohistochemically, and histopathologically investigate the therapeutic effect of melatonin on liver fibrosis. The surgical procedure for pinealectomy was performed at the beginning of the study, and the sham and pinealectomized rats were administered CCl4 dissolved in corn oil (1:1) alone every other day to induce liver fibrosis or together with melatonin (10 mg/kg) therapy for 15 days. Melatonin is an essential therapeutic agent and offers an alternative therapeutic strategy in CCl4-induced liver fibrosis by suppressing inflammation, oxidative stress, and the TGF-β1 signaling pathway. Treatment with melatonin ameliorated CCl4-induced liver fibrosis by restoring hepatocellular damage and reducing plasma AST, ALT, and ALP values. Melatonin increases the activity of SOD and CAT, which are important enzymes for antioxidant defence, and raises GSH levels, which further enhances antioxidant function. Also, melatonin reduced hepatic inflammation (IL-6 and IL-1β) and oxidative stress indices. Moreover, histopathological changes and immunohistochemical expression of TGF-β1 were restored following melatonin supplementation in the CCl4-induced liver fibrosis model in pinealectomized rats. Our study shows that melatonin supplementation has a beneficial effect in protecting the liver fibrosis induced by CCl4 in pinealectomized rats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve (RLN) injury is a complication in neck surgery. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of primary suture repair with melatonin treatment on nerve regeneration after RLN damage. After the RLN damage, nerve repair was performed in the first and fourth groups. The third and fourth groups were given intraperitoneal melatonin therapy daily for six weeks. EMG was applied to all subjects and vocal cord movements were evaluated endoscopically. At the end of the sixth week, all subjects were sacrificed, and their larynx were examinedhistologically. Vocal cord paralysis (VCP) was observed in all subjects after RLN damage. In the sixth week, improvement was observed in the first and fourth group who underwent nerve repair, whereas none in the second and third group, who did not undergo nerve repair, improved. With EMG, the highest MUP was in the fourth group. Histologically, an increase in Schwann cells, a decrease in axon damage, and cytoplasmic vacuolization were in the fourth group. Myelin protein zero and Ki-67 staining were the most in the fourth group. In our study, laryngoscopic, electrophysiological and histopathological findings show that melatonin contributes to nerve healing but this could not translate into functional recovery.

Objective: To evaluate early changes occurring in both medial and lateral meniscus thickness from the knees of patients with osteoarthritis (OA)., Methods: We conducted this study in the Department of Anatomy and Division of Radiology, Faculty of Medicine, Kocaeli University, Kocaeli, Turkey during the period 2004 to 2005. In this study, we measured the thickness of the medial and lateral meniscus in a group of 36 (50 knees) consecutive patients with chronic knee pain, and clinical findings of early OA, and 10 (20 knees) control subjects using MRI., Results: The thickness of the posterior horn of the medial meniscus and anterior horn of the lateral meniscus were significantly higher in the OA patients compared with the control subjects., Conclusion: This study showed that meniscal degeneration in early stage OA is not evenly distributed in the knee. Thickening of the menisci in some areas may occur due to their own localization and biomechanics.

Abstract

We observed a rare variation of splenic artery during the routine dissection in the Laboratory of the Anatomy Department. It arose from the splenic artery toward the distal part of transverse colon which typically supplied by the inferior mesenteric artery. Embryologically distal part of the transverse colon is a segment of hindgut. In this case, splenic artery which an artery of foregut supplies an area of hindgut. The knowledge of splenic artery variations has significant importance during surgery of the organs of the upper abdominal region. In this study, we discussed clinical significance and embryological aspects of this anomalous artery.

Abstract

Objectives: To investigate the tissue injury associated with long-term alcohol consumption in male gonads. To this end, apoptotic testicle tissues of alcoholic rats were compared with the testicle tissues of the control rats., Methods: This study was conducted in the Department of Anatomy and Division of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, Kocaeli University, Kocaeli, Turkey during the period 2002 to 2003. We used Sprague-Dawley rats as the subject material in the investigation of apoptosis. We divided the rats into 2 groups: alcoholic rats and the control group, with 10 adult male rats in each group. We housed the subjects in each group under controlled temperature (22 +/- 3 degrees C) and humidity (62 +/- 7%) and lighting (12 hours darkness and 12 hours daylight per day). We fed the rats in the alcoholic group by ethanol in liquid diet for 12 weeks while the control rats received the normal isocaloric diet. We fixed the testicle tissues of both groups by perfusion of 10% formaldehyde through left ventricle and then removed. We further fixed the tissues in formaldehyde solution for at least 2 days. After dehydration by ethanol, we embedded the tissue in paraffin and used serial paraffin sections (5 micron thickness) for immunohistochemistry. We used Caspase-3 Ab-4 (CPP32) antibody to identify caspase reaction in apoptotic regions. Hence, we observed the stained sections and photographed the apoptotic seminiferous tubules (ST). For comparison of apoptosis in the alcoholic group and control group, we counted the apoptotic germ cells in x 400 magnification under light microscope., Results: The diameters of seminiferous tubules were measured using light microscope with micrometre. The findings were compared by computer and significant differences in apoptosis between 2 groups (p<0.01) were detected., Conclusion: Apoptosis is significantly induced in ethanol treated rat related to the overuse of ethanol. The findings indicate the tissue injury of testicles associated with alcohol consumption.

44. A rare multiple variation of the greater omentum.

Abstract

In a dissection performed in our department, we observed multiple variations of the greater omentum. The unusual attachments of the greater omentum were identified. While the right upper part combined with ligamentum teres hepatis, the left upper part had connection with the anterolateral abdominal wall. In addition, the free lower margin of the greater omentum was bound to the front of the abdomen wall. These unusual attachments contained vessels and nerves. The greater omentum is used in reconstructive surgery of the chest wall. And its ligaments are important in abdominal surgery. Therefore, it is important to keep in mind the different attachments of the greater omentum, so that caution is required during intraabdominal surgery and also in appropriately interpreting the radiographs.
