Recent studies have revealed increasingly worse and more complex mental health conditions in young people, which is reflected in a growing trend in emergency room (ER) visits for acute psychopathological symptoms (APSs). This phenomenon has become exacerbated in recent decades, with a peak in the post-pandemic period. To better characterize the phenomenon, we investigated the change in the rate and type of ER counseling requests provided at the Child Neuropsychiatry Unit of the University Hospital of Bari, Italy over the period between 2019 and 2023 for subjects younger than 18 years old. For this purpose, we retrospectively analyzed a total number of 1073 urgent consultation reports retrieved through the reporting computerized operating system of our hospital. The distribution of the counseling requests provided for APSs and, among these, the distribution of the numbers of APSs and of the male: female ratio were significantly different over the years, with an increasing linear trend identified for APSs (p = 3.095 × 10−7), the average number of APSs (p = 3.598 × 10−7), and female gender prevalence (p = 0.03908), as well as for the patients with a history of psychotropic drug assumption (p = 0.0006319). A significant change in the number of urgent counseling requests received for eating disorders (p = 0.0007408), depression (p = 7.92 × 10−8), somatization (p = 4.03 × 10−6), self-harm (SA) (p = 1.358 × 10−6), and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) (p = 8.965 × 10−6) was found, with a significant increasing trend for anxiety (p = 0.0444), depression (p = 8.06 × 10−6), somatization (p = 0.004616), SA (p = 3.998 × 10−8), and NSSI (p = 5.074 × 10−7). The findings of our study support the hypothesis of an alarming progressive worsening of the mental health of children and adolescents, with an overlapping effect of the pandemic exacerbating the process.

IntroductionStudies have analyzed the effects of industrial installations on the environment and human health in Taranto, Southern Italy. Literature documented associations between different variables and dementia mortality among both women and men. The present study aims to investigate the associations between sex, environment, age, disease duration, pandemic years, anti-dementia drugs, and death rate.MethodsData from the regional medication registry were used. All women and men with an anti-dementia medication between 2015 and 2021 were included and followed-up to 2021. Bayesian mixed effects logistic and Cox regression models with time varying exposures were fitted using integrated nested Laplace approximations and adjusting for patients and therapy characteristics.ResultsA total of 7,961 person-years were observed. Variables associated with lower prevalence of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEIs) medication were male sex (OR 0.63, 95% CrI 0.42–0.96), age 70–79 years (OR 0.17, 95% CrI 0.06–0.47) and ≥ 80 years (OR 0.08, 95% CrI 0.03–0.23), disease duration of 2–3 years (OR 0.43, 95% CrI 0.32–0.56) and 4–6 years (OR 0.21, 95% CrI 0.13–0.33), and pandemic years 2020 (OR 0.50, 95% CrI 0.37–0.67) and 2021 (OR 0.47, 95% CrI 0.33–0.65). Variables associated with higher mortality were male sex (HR 2.14, 95% CrI 1.75–2.62), residence in the contaminated site of national interest (SIN) (HR 1.25, 95% CrI 1.02–1.53), age ≥ 80 years (HR 6.06, 95% CrI 1.94–18.95), disease duration of 1 year (HR 1.50, 95% CrI 1.12–2.01), 2–3 years (HR 1.90, 95% CrI 1.45–2.48) and 4–6 years (HR 2.21, 95% CrI 1.60–3.07), and pandemic years 2020 (HR 1.38, 95% CrI 1.06–1.80) and 2021 (HR 1.56, 95% CrI 1.21–2.02). Variables associated with lower mortality were therapy with AChEIs alone (HR 0.69, 95% CrI 0.56–0.86) and in combination with memantine (HR 0.54, 95% CrI 0.37–0.81).DiscussionMale sex, age, disease duration, and pandemic years appeared to be associated with lower AChEIs medications. Male sex, residence in the SIN of Taranto, age, disease duration, and pandemic years seemed to be associated with an increased death rate, while AChEIs medication seemed to be associated with improved survival rate.

Floods and landslides cause continuous damage to ecosystems, infrastructures, and populations. Particularly, the occurrence and the existence of different natural hazards in the same territory highlight the need to improve risk mitigation strategies for local authorities and community resilience solutions for inhabitants. Analyzing and mapping social vulnerability provides information about the main features of a specific community to deal with natural events. Specifically, the interaction between multi-hazards and the socio-economic environment suggests multidisciplinary assessments that merge the physical and the socio-economic features of the affected territories, providing a useful approach to support multi-risk reduction planning. In this context, the article focuses on integrating landslide and flood hazard scenarios with social vulnerability in the Basilicata Region (southern Italy) at the census tract level. Thirteen municipalities were chosen as multi-hazard hot spots, while open-source platforms were selected for hazard and social vulnerability data collection and analyses. A geographic information system (GIS)-based approach was applied to combine different hazard scenarios with social vulnerability distribution among 1331 census tracts to detect the most vulnerable sub-municipality areas that need special attention in multi-risk reduction strategies. The results are presented in the form of maps, which provide a relevant suitable tool in local emergency planning.

ABSTRACTA geological, geomorphological and geo-touristic map, at 1:5000 scale, has been produced for the most representative area of the regional ‘Special Nature Reserve of Montalbano Jonico Badlands’, with the aim to represent the scientific and landscape features which allowed the establishment of the Reserve. The area is located in the Province of Matera (Basilicata), on the southwestern sector of the Apennines Quaternary foredeep, in Southern Italy. The map highlights stratigraphic signatures of international interest and badland landscapes, imprinted on a clayey marine succession straddling the Early-Middle Pleistocene boundary. This stratigraphic interval can be considered as an international reference section for global paleoclimatic signatures during Marine Oxygen Isotopic Stages 20–18 and for the base of the Middle Pleistocene Subseries/Subepoch. With the goal to disseminate these knowledges, to improve future research and to promote sustainable geo-tourism, the map allows visitors to enjoy the scientific features and scenery of the Reserve.

Food safety is a topic of increasing relevance in the European Union (EU). Ensuring safe food from farm to fork is one of the main objectives of EU policies. In our study, we conducted an online survey to assess the food safety knowledge and eating habits in various categories. For young people, we chose school students aged 15–19, based on their ability to cook autonomously after school. For adults, we choose a representative sample consisting of students’ parents and teachers in Chieti and Pescara Provinces of Abruzzo Region (Italy). The survey was structured in eight sections with particular attention to questions regarding risks associated with microorganisms (e.g., Salmonella spp.) and bacterial cross-contamination. Abstract The development of a resilient society is a major challenge for growing human population faced with abundant natural hazards. During and after the May 22, 2021 eruption of Nyiragongo, the local population was surprised and scared by the subsequent seismicity and associated surface fracturing, coupled with the alert of a possible new eruptive vent opening in Goma (Democratic Republic of Congo) and/or Gisenyi (Rwanda). The creation of a toll-free phone number enabled the population to record fractures and gas/thermal anomalies affecting the area. Such work was fundamental in enabling scientists and authorities to assess the associated risks. Crucially, gas data showed that the degassing through fractures did not represent direct transfer of magmatic volatiles but was more likely of superficial origin. Surprisingly, this participatory work revealed that the first fractures appeared several weeks before the eruption and their opening was not detected by the monitoring system. This firmly underlines the need for scientists to anchor citizen science in monitoring strategies.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been scarcely investigated in the field of sleep research. We hypothesize that DBS onto hypothalamic sleep- and wake-promoting centers will produce significant neuromodulatory effects and potentially become a therapeutic strategy for patients suffering severe, drug-refractory sleep–wake disturbances. We aimed to investigate whether continuous electrical high-frequency DBS, such as that often implemented in clinical practice, in the ventrolateral preoptic nucleus (VLPO) or the perifornical area of the posterior lateral hypothalamus (PeFLH), significantly modulates sleep–wake characteristics and behavior. We implanted healthy rats with electroencephalographic/electromyographic electrodes and recorded vigilance states in parallel to bilateral bipolar stimulation of VLPO and PeFLH at 125 Hz and 90 µA over 24 h to test the modulating effects of DBS on sleep–wake proportions, stability and spectral power in relation to the baseline. We unexpectedly found that VLPO DBS at 125 Hz deepens slow-wave sleep (SWS) as measured by increased delta power, while sleep proportions and fragmentation remain unaffected. Thus, the intensity, but not the amount of sleep or its stability, is modulated. Similarly, the proportion and stability of vigilance states remained altogether unaltered upon PeFLH DBS but, in contrast to VLPO, 125 Hz stimulation unexpectedly weakened SWS, as evidenced by reduced delta power. This study provides novel insights into non-acute functional outputs of major sleep–wake centers in the rat brain in response to electrical high-frequency stimulation, a paradigm frequently used in human DBS. In the conditions assayed, while exerting no major effects on the sleep–wake architecture, hypothalamic high-frequency stimulation arises as a provocative sleep intensity-modulating approach.

Yarrowia lipolytica is one of the most studied “non-conventional” oleaginous yeasts. It is able to produce a number of valuable proteins and metabolites such as lipases and other hydrolytic enzymes, single cell oils (SCOs), single cell proteins (SCPs), carboxylic acids, erythritol and ?-decalactone (Nicaud, 2012). Scientific research is focusing on Y. lipolytica due to its ability to grow on different carbon sources, both hydrophobic and hydrophilic, and to its high tolerance to broad pH ranges and salt concentrations (Miller and Halper, 2019). Lipases (EC 3.1.1.3) are a class of hydrolases which naturally catalyze the hydrolysis of triglycerides to glycerol and free fatty acids at the oil–water interface in the presence of emulsions. Furthermore, lipases are very important for the synthesis of esters through esterification and transesterification reactions in anhydrous conditions, with high enantioselectivity. For their ability to catalyze specific biotransformations in different reaction media, lipases have been employed in several industrial sectors, from the pharmaceutical to food and chemical industries (Treichel et al., 2010). Y. lipolytica use as a sustainable platform for lipase production has been investigate using waste cooking oils (WCOs). The term WCO refers to oils and fats from food processing and storage at a commercial, industrial or household level. In Europe, WCOs annual production accounts for approximately 4 million tons/y (EBIA, 2021). If not collected and properly disposed of, WCOs can form the so-called “fatbergs” that can damage and clog the sewage system and pollute water and soil (Foo et al., 2014). In this work, the capabilities of Y. lipolytica to grow on high concentrations of different hydrophobic carbon sources, such as Olive Oil and WCOs, among others, were investigated to evaluate their potential as inducers for lipase production.

With the economic development, the non-renewable resources consumption and the energy crisis, microbial-based platforms represent a promising alternative route for the production of valuable chemicals. Yarrowia lipolytica is a non-conventional oleaginous yeast, which is able to grow on hydrophobic substrates, such as triglycerides, as carbon source. Its growth is associated with the production of different high-value bio-products, such as enzymes, organic acids, and lipids. In recent years, both basic and applied research have been carried out for improving its genetic manipulation and industrial use. The thorough knowledge of Y. lipolytica biolipid conversion and production pathways makes it a good candidate for its use as a cell factory for the design of alternative bioprocesses based on renewable substrates. Waste cooking oils (WCOs) are vegetable oils and animal fats that are discarded after food processing. Globally, high amounts of this waste product are produced every year. Due to their composition in triglycerides, WCO can be used as feedstock for microbial growth to create novel routes for the so-called “industrial symbiosis” following the circular economy approach, to upgrade a waste as a renewable feedstock for the bio-based industry. In particular, the goal of this study was the creation of new value chains from waste cooking oil (WCO) for the sustainable production of added-value compounds to valorize this type of waste and to reduce its incorrect disposal. Specifically, Y. lipolytica was investigated to evaluate its ability to grow in the presence of different concentrations of WCO compared to glucose as carbon source and determine its response both in terms of industrially-relevant compounds production and cell robustness. Flow cytometry analysis was performed to investigate the response of Y. lipolytica at increasing WCO concentrations in terms of intracellular lipids quantification and cellular viability.

Abstract Background The injection of muscle precursor cells (MPC) into the external urinary sphincter muscle (EUS) is a promising therapeutic option for regenerative treatment of stress urinary incontinence (SUI). The objective of the present project was to conduct a pre-clinical trial to investigate the feasibility and accuracy of ultrasound (US) guided, transurethral injections into the EUS of female cadavers. Methods This is a prospective, anatomical, interventional and radiological cadaveric laboratory investigation. Two urologists performed transurethral US-guided injections to deliver nano-iron particles into the EUS. The intervention was performed in three unfixed, fresh female cadavers. Each cadaver received MRI before and CT as well as MRI of the pelvis after the injections. Results The precision and accumulation of nano-iron particles in the EUS was compared using a rating scale to evaluate left versus right and anterior versus posterior distribution in axial and sagittal orientation with US, MRI and CT. The accuracy of our US-guided injections into the anterior target region yielded 4 points on the rating scale. Adequate precision and accumulation of particles in the left versus right EUS were also demonstrated (3 vs. 3.33 points, respectively). Signal intensity in MRI revealed a mean ratio of 0.33 before and after injection. CT scans showed no relevant artefacts impairing the assessment. Conclusion US-guided, transurethral injection into the EUS is feasible and imaging reveals a precise accumulation in the target region. Our method provides an appropriate approach to deliver MPC in the EUS muscle for a regenerative treatment of SUI in the near future.

Questo saggio intende principalmente offrire un contributo per colmare una lacuna storiografica. Infatti, gli sporadici volumi della letteratura secondaria reperibili su queste tematiche si sono in prevalenza occupati di analizzare le dinamiche ed i risultati relativi alle comunità di italiani emigrati in Inghilterra o di sondare l'atteggiamento della stampa periodica locale nei confronti dell'ascesa del dittatore in Italia e dei successivi decorsi della dittatura. Assumendo come estremi cronologici gli anni venti-quaranta e facendo leva su un corposo lavoro archivistico, questo saggio analizza l'utilizzo dell'italiano, la sua recezione e la sua strumentalizzazione politica all'interno dei poli universitari inglesi ed in altri settori della società e dell'alta cultura.

The effects of climate change are causing an increase in the frequency and extent of natural disasters. Because of their morphological characteristics, rivers can cause major flooding events. Indeed, they can be subjected to variations in discharge in response to heavy rainfall and riverbank failures. Among the emerging methodologies that address the monitoring of river flooding, those that include the combination of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and photogrammetric techniques (i.e., Structure from Motion-SfM) ensure the high-frequency acquisition of high-resolution spatial data over wide areas and so the generation of orthomosaics, useful for automatic feature extraction. Trainable Weka Segmentation (TWS) is an automatic feature extraction open-source tool. It was developed to primarily fulfill supervised classification purposes of biological microscope images, but its usefulness has been demonstrated in several image pipelines. At the same time, there is a significant lack of published studies on the applicability of TWS with the identification of a universal and efficient combination of machine learning classifiers and segmentation approach, in particular with respect to classifying UAV images of riverine environments. In this perspective, we present a study comparing the accuracy of nine combinations, classifier plus image segmentation filter, using TWS, also with respect to human photo-interpretation, in order to identify an effective supervised approach for automatic river features extraction from UAV multi-temporal orthomosaics. The results, which are very close to human interpretation, indicate that the proposed approach could prove to be a valuable tool to support and improve the hydro-geomorphological and flooding hazard assessments in riverine environments.

The yeast Yarrowia lipolytica is an industrially relevant microorganism, which is able to convert low-value wastes into different high-value, bio-based products, such as enzymes, lipids, and other important metabolites. Waste cooking oil (WCO) represents one of the main streams generated in the food supply chain, especially from the domestic sector. The need to avoid its incorrect disposal makes this waste a resource for developing bioprocesses in the perspective of a circular bioeconomy. To this end, the strain Y. lipolytica W29 was used as a platform for the simultaneous production of intracellular lipids and extracellular lipases. Three different minimal media conditions with different pH controls were utilized in a small-scale (50 mL final volume) screening strategy, and the best condition was tested for an up-scaling procedure in higher volumes (800 mL) by selecting the best-performing possibility. The tested media were constituted by YNB media with high nitrogen restriction (1 g L−1 (NH4)2SO4) and different carbon sources (3% w v−1 glucose and 10% v v−1 WCO) with different levels of pH controls. Lipase production and SCO content were analyzed. A direct correlation was found between decreasing FFA availability in the media and increasing SCO levels and lipase activity. The simultaneous production of extracellular lipase (1.164 ± 0.025 U mL−1) and intracellular single-cell oil accumulation by Y. lipolytica W29 growing on WCO demonstrates the potential and the industrial relevance of this biorefinery model.

Photovoltaic (PV) energy systems are considered good renewable energy technologies due to their high production of clean energy. This paper combines a PV system with wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), which are usually designed separately. For this, a recent methodology was adopted, which provides direct steps to estimate the peak powers of PV plants (PVPs) by using the airflow of blowers. The goal was to reduce the energy consumption of aeration tanks in WWTPs. Analytical equations and parameters based on the air temperature, solar irradiation, biological kinetic, dissolved oxygen, and mechanical oxygenation are adopted. The key parameter in this methodology is the air temperature variation that represents an approximated temperature in the WWTP’s oxidation tanks. It is shown, through the analysis of small WWTPs, that since the temperature changes for each season, there is a peak in the function of the quantity of oxidation, which is high in the summer season. Further, the curve trends of temperature for WWRPs are similar to PVPs. Therefore, it could be possible to design the PV system with the WWTPs well. The results show that the air temperature curves increase in a directly proportional way with the consumption of energy from oxidation blowers; this could induce a more conservative PVP design. Furthermore, the results show that the mean trend of the energy consumption of the analyzed aeration systems reaches about 8.0% at a temperature of 20–25 °C, covering a good part of the oxidation tank consumption.

Among different pathogens, opportunistic viral infection caused by EBV is particularly relevant. This gammaherpesvirus, belonging to the Herpesviridae family, may complicate the disease course in different clinical settings by inducing pathological EBV pictures in patients with a defective immunologic response. Our report evaluated EBV-specific T cell responses by IFN- γ ELISPOT assay, which revealed defective EBV specific immunological response.
