Background. A comprehensive mechanistic assessment of normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) is an essential step toward identifying biomarkers to assess liver viability. Although some studies have evaluated the effect of NMP on inflammation markers, there are other key pathological mechanisms involved in ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) that have not yet been evaluated. Methods. Eight human donor livers preserved by NMP were included to analyze IRI during preservation. Concentrations of several biomarkers involved in different biological processes of IRI were measured in the perfusate. Results. Perfusate levels of intercellular adhesion molecule 1, P-selectin, vascular cell adhesion molecule 1, metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motif type 1, member 13, phospholipase A2 group VII, and syndecan-1 progressively increased during NMP. Noteworthy, perfusate lactate levels showed a strong correlation with C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 10 (P = 0.001), intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (P = 0.01), and urokinase plasminogen activator (P = 0.001). Conclusions. Perfusate lactate correlates with the main underlying biological mechanisms occurring in the NMP environment. Moreover, several IRI biomarkers accumulate during NMP, which may limit the extent of the benefits of this technology.

Abstract Objective Advances in hepatic radioembolization are based on a selective approach with radical intent and the use of multicompartment dosimetric analysis. The objective of this study is to assess the utility of voxel-based dosimetry in the quantification of actual absorbed doses in radiation segmentectomy procedures and to establish cutoff values predictive of response. Methods Ambispective study in hepatocarcinoma patients treated with radiation segmentectomy. Calculated dosimetric parameters were mean tumor-absorbed dose, maximum tumor AD, minimal tumor AD in 30, 50, and 70% of tumor volume and mean AD in non-tumor liver. The actual absorbed dose (aAD) was calculated on the Y-90-PET/CT image using 3D voxel-based dosimetry software. To assess radiological response, localized mRECIST criteria were used. The objective response rate (ORR) was defined as CR or PR. Results Twenty-four HCC patients, BCLC 0 (5), A (17) and B (2) were included. The mean yttrium-90 administered activity was 1.38 GBq in a mean angiosome volume of 206.9 cc and tumor volume 56.01 cc. The mean theoretical AD was 306.3 Gy and aAD 352 Gy. A very low concordance was observed between both parameters (rho_c 0.027). ORR at 3 and 6 m was 84.21% and 92.31%, respectively. Statistically significant relationship was observed between the maximum tumor-absorbed dose and complete radiological response at 3 m (p 0.022). Conclusion A segmental approach with radical intention leads to response rates greater than 90%, being the tumor maximum absorbed dose the dosimetric parameter that best predicts radiological response in voxel-based dosimetry.

In recent years, zebrafish have become commonly used as a model for studying human traits and disorders. Their small size, high fecundity, and rapid development allow for more high-throughput experiments compared to other vertebrate models. Given that zebrafish share >70% gene homologs with humans and their genomes can be readily edited using highly efficient CRISPR methods, we are now able to rapidly generate mutations impacting practically any gene of interest. Unfortunately, our ability to phenotype mutant larvae has not kept pace. To address this challenge, we have developed a protocol that obtains multiple phenotypic measurements from individual zebrafish larvae in an automated and parallel fashion, including morphological features (i.e., body length, eye area, and head size) and movement/behavior. By assaying wild-type zebrafish in a variety of conditions, we determined optimal parameters that avoid significant developmental defects or physical damage; these include morphological imaging of larvae at two time points [3 days post fertilization (dpf) and 5 dpf] coupled with motion tracking of behavior at 5 dpf. As a proof-of-principle, we tested our approach on two novel CRISPR-generated mutant zebrafish lines carrying predicted null-alleles of syngap1b and slc7a5, orthologs to two human genes implicated in autism-spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, and epilepsy. Using our optimized high-throughput phenotyping protocol, we recapitulated previously published results from mouse and zebrafish models of these candidate genes. In summary, we describe a rapid parallel pipeline to characterize morphological and behavioral features of individual larvae in a robust and consistent fashion, thereby improving our ability to better identify genes important in human traits and disorders.

Neuroscience as a discipline is rarely covered in educational institutions in Puerto Rico. In an effort to overcome this deficit we developed the Bridge to Neuroscience Workshop (BNW), a full-day hands-on workshop in neuroscience education. BNW was conceived as an auxiliary component of a parent recruitment program called Bridge to the PhD in Neuroscience Program (BPNP). The objectives of BNW are to identify promising students for BPNP, and to increase awareness of neuroscience as a discipline and a career option. BNW introduces basic concepts in neuroscience using a variety of educational techniques, including mini-lectures, interactive discussions, case studies, experimentation, and a sheep brain dissection. Since its inception in 2011 BNW has undergone a series of transformations that continue to improve upon an already successful and influential educational program for underrepresented minorities. As of Fall 2018, we have presented 21 workshops, impacting 200 high school and 424 undergraduate students. BNW has been offered at University of Puerto Rico (UPR)-Arecibo, UPR-Cayey, UPR-Humacao, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Ponce, and Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico-Arecibo. A pre-and post evaluation was given to evaluate material comprehension and thus measure effectiveness of our one-day interactive workshop. Our results suggest that both high school and undergraduate students have little prior knowledge of neuroscience, and that participation in BNW improves not only understanding, but also enthusiasm for the discipline. Currently, our assessment has only been able to evaluate short-term effects (e.g. comprehension and learning). Therefore, our current focus is developing methods capable of determining how participation in BNW impacts future academic and career decisions.

Benedetto and Saer participated in film projects as scriptwriters and as adapters of literary texts to film. Both authors were also film critics. This essay analyzes the stamp that film left on Di Benedetto’s short story “Declinación y Ángel” and on Saer’s “Sombras sobre vidrio esmerilado”, as reflected in the use of a certain type of slow and dilated language, the treatment of light and sound, their characters and the deployment of resources such as the use of sight and detailed descriptions.

Metareflexion in Brazilian Translation Studies in META and TTR: 1990-2012 Abstract: Brazilian translation studies, from their beginnings until the present day, have come a long way. From the foundational texts of Haroldo and Augusto de Campos, until today, Brazilian translation scholars had built a sustained international acknowledgement. From Canada's point of view, Brazilian translation scholars production is of utmost interest, that may be the main reason to explain why from 1990 to the present day, in the two most important Canadian translation studies journals, Brazilian authors have held a place of choice. In this article we will examine Brazilians scholars' analysis about themselves, their work, and the evolution of the discipline in their country, in the two mentioned Canadian journals. Those texts show us the progress in Brazilian translation studies as a result of metareflexion of their own agents; they also suggest that either practitioners and translation scholars in both countries, have been preparing the path for a widespread academic collaboration in the Americas, where reading and listening to the voice of the Other and listening is a priority. - Abstract

26. Moralidad sin concepto Estudio interdisciplinar
- Author

Ilia Colón Rodríguez
- Abstract

Abstract: From an Imposed Presence to a Present Absence: Desiderio Navarro’s Translation of Russian Cultural Theory 1960-2009 In the 1960’s revolutionary Cuba, Desiderio Navarro, after being expulsed from university because of his catholic background, becomes an autodidact translator. During those years he also moved to Havana, and started working for the ‘revolutionary’ cultural journals. During the 1970’s he is directly and profoundly involved in the Cuban cultural debate. He fathered the journal Criterios in 1972, a symbolic answer to the censorship and closure of Pensamiento Crítico. Since then, he translated thousands of articles and dozens of books from authors as diverse as Mikhail Bakhtin and Pierre Bourdieu. In 2007 Navarro was the coordinator of the “guerrita de los emails” (the little war of emails), which was the Cuban critic intellectuals protest against the Castro’s orthodoxy new wave of repression. Navarro’s work of translation and diffusion of new theories and thinking still continues today. This essay attempts first, to answer questions related to the choice of texts and authors, selected by the translator and editor for his anthology of Russian theory published in 2009, in Cuba. Then, to explicit the context and contradictions that were implicit to the social, ideological and political processes in the ex-USSR, and in Cuba. This study’s key hypothesis is that Navarro was, and still is, a critical intellectual, in the same sense this concept was interpreted in 1960’s Cuba. This means that together with the claim of an active and critical role vis-à-vis the Power, there is also a unconditional fidelity to the ideas of non-orthodox Marxism and to the nationalistic paradigm, both key elements of Cuba’s contemporary social thinking.

Objective: hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) ablation by radiofrequency (RFA) is a novel technique with a great variety of methods whose efficacy and predictive factors have not been completely studied. Some of the main predictive factors in this type of treatment are analyzed in the present study. Patients and methods: ninety-three patients with hepatocellular carcinoma over cirrhosis, and with no indication for surgical resection were treated by RFA. Two different types of electrodes were used for RFA (refrigerated-"Cool-Tip" and perfusion with saline solution, the approach was percutaneous, by laparoscopy or laparotomy. Results: overall survival at 1, 2 and 3 years was 88, 81, and 76%, with a free-disease survival (FDS) of 66, 31 and 17%, respectively. For tumors less than 3 cm, FDS at 1,2 and 3 years was 74, 44 and 30%, while for more than 3 cm in size FDS was 55, 12 and 0% (p = 0.02). FDS for HCC with one nodule was 70, 36 and 22%, and for more than one nodule it decreased to 50, 17 and 0% at 1, 2 and 3 years, respectively (p = 0.07). Surprisingly, the method employed for RFA has a main influence in FDS, with 0% at 3 years for perfusion electrodes and 26% for cool-tip electrodes at the same period. Conclusions: in this series, overall survival at three years was relatively high; however, tumoral size, number of nodules and RFS method were independent variables associated with disease-free survival.

Due to the intermittent nature of the renewable power plants and the rigid operation of existing plans, the need for flexible power production is eminent. Hybrid energy systems have shown potential for flexible power production capable to fulfill the power demands and maintain the efficiency. This work studies different design cases of a 100kW Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) and Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) hybrid system. Anode off-gas from the fuel cell stack provided the chemical energy to run the ICE. Heat management of the anode exhaust was considered to attain the operational limits of the ICE in the present configuration. A turbocharger was used to deliver the necessary air flow for both the fuel cell stack and the engine. A series of 25 design cases were chosen to analyze the performance and the potential flexibility of this cycle. The 25-design points resulted from a matrix composed of the variation of fuel utilization and reformer operating temperature, ranging from 70% to 90% and 600K to 1000K, respectively. At each design point, hardware was re-sized to match the desired conditions. The cycle performance and fuel cell distributed profiles are discussed in this paper. It is discovered that the system efficiency increases as the fuel utilization increases following a nearly linear behavior. The highest efficiency attained is 62% at a reformer operating temperature of 800K and a 90% fuel utilization. The minimum external fuel required to maintain turbocharger in operation decreases with the increase on the reformer temperature. Power contribution between ICE and SOFC follows a linear behavior closely overlapping each trend at different reforming operational temperatures. The impact of external reforming and internal on-anode reforming is also discussed. It is found that there is an optimal balance between the external and internal reforming. The optimal methane content in this work is shown to be around ∼18 vol%.

Abstract The purpose of this reflection article is to investigate the concept of resilience as a resistance enhancer in the case of housing in a natural and socioeconomic post-disaster context, in Puerto Rico. Resilience/resistance are proposed as two stages of a possible, radical and hopeful process. The objectives of this paper are: to demonstrate what a resilient/resistant house looks like, what qualities constitute it and how it can enable real forms of physical and social resistance. The bibliographic review supports the definition of the problem and the relevance of the research, in addition to contributing some theoretical considerations on disaster, resilience and housing, and providing references to broaden the interpretation. The methodology consists mainly of the analysis of spatial agency processes and housing projects in Puerto Rico seeking to resist disaster. As part of the results, parameters are outlined so that the house can resist the disaster in all its facets.

36. Guamá's cyber-humor in exile: Aboriginal-Afrocuban identity and politically incorrect translationese working for another Cuba

Identity (social science) ,Gender studies ,Sociology - Abstract
Guamá is a graphic humor online publication and an outstanding Cuban cultural phenomenon in exile. It’s creator, Alen Lauzán Falcón, was born in Cuba in 1974, and before he managed to escape the Castros' island, he had already had a successful career in the field of graphic humor. What followed was astonishing for the whole Cuban Diaspora. Upon his arrival in Chile, where he remained, working for and inspired by the graphic humour style of The Clinic, a popular Chilean humoristic publication, he created his own online journal, adopting the name of the most known Cuban aboriginal fighter against Spanish conquistadors. Through incisive and constant “politically incorrect” humour Lauzán Falcón have been ridiculing the majority of the Castroist publications through spicy comments and upturned Cuban propaganda slogans. This became a kind of creative ‘translationese’. His efforts are significantly contributing to criticizing and redirecting the meaning of Castroist ideological indoctrination concepts – efforts enriched with a strong flavour of Cuban Aboriginal (Taíno) and Afro-Cuban humour. Lauzán Falcón aimed to show a critical perspective on Cuban affairs for Cubans, and for anyone else who can feel and understand the Cuban situation and show solidarity with the difficulties of the people living under the longest-running extreme-left-wing regime in Latin America. In this article, I will first analyze the ‘translationese’ phenomenon from a Complexity point of view, meaning, historically and culturally rebinding of the Cuban study case to the historical antecedents of ‘translationese’. Second, I will analyze ten graphic Guamá ‘front pages’ (satiric imitations of Castroist publications), published by Lauzán Falcón between 2008 and 2014 in his eponymous blog, starting with the main banner of Guamá itself. Third, I will operate a complex rebinding of the results demonstrating that the same spirit of creative resistance that the Taíno and African slaves showed in Cuba during more than five centuries, is still in action today in Cubans’ efforts to deal with the consequences of a long-lasting extreme-left-wing regime. A selected glossary of Guama’s Afro-Cuban words and expressions analyzed here will appear at the end of the article.

Background Solitary fibrous tumor is an unusual fibroblastic mesenchymal neoplasm typically described in the pleura. It may appear anywhere with a varied anatomic distribution and essentially it can develop from any soft tissue or visceral location. Its course is usually indolent and it rarely causes distant metastases, so it has a prolonged survival rate. It sometimes presents itself as a disseminate disease being the liver the most frequently involved location. In these occasions, the management should be discussed in a multidisciplinary tumor committee formed by surgeons, oncologists and radiologists. Surgery remains the gold standard for treatment. Case representation We present the case of a woman with a tumor in the left abdominal wall and bilobar massive liver metastases, both locations histologically diagnosed as solitary fibrous tumor. She receives biological treatment for a severe case of Crohn´s disease. Evaluated in a multidisciplinary committee, surgery was recommended for both the primary lesion and the liver metastases. The hepatobiliary surgeons considered a two-stage hepatectomy with portal vein embolization (PVE) as the best strategy. After the first procedure consisting in cleaning the left hepatic lobe followed by PVE the future liver remnant volume (FLRV) was considered inadequate, so the patient was also treated with right transarterial radioembolizacion with yttrium 90 (TARE-Y90) intending a double goal: to treat the tumor and to increased the FLRV. Furthermore, a severe flare of Crohn´s disease forced us to intensify the patient’s treatment with the addition of biological agents (infliximab and adalimumab) until complete remission of the symptoms. The second stage of the liver surgery had to be postponed for more than 6 months and could finally be carried out without complications, achieving an R0 resection. The postoperative course was uneventful and the follow up has showed no recurrence to date. Conclusion Solitary fibrous tumours with extensive liver metastases are infrequent but when they appear modern surgical strategies like two stage hepatectomy are the treatment of choice and must be carried out by specialised units. The therapeutic decisions should be guided by a multidisciplinary committee.

One of the objectives of the Parker Solar Probe mission is to understand how the solar wind is heated and accelerated. The plasma in the inner heliosphere is considered to be collisionless due to its low density and, for this reason, the primary way for particles to interact with each other is through wave-particle interactions. Past research has shown that energy can be transferred to ions if they are in a resonant configuration with waves, and previous observations have demonstrated that the solar wind cools more slowly than expected. In this project, we study left-hand polarized ion-cyclotron wave activity and examine its energy transfer in the inner heliosphere. This is done by analyzing data obtained from the FIELDS and SWEAP instrument suites and identifying regions with left-handed wave power signals in the trajectory of Parker Solar Probe during its first three encounters. Increased ion-cyclotron wave power is found near the perihelia, indicating wave energy dissipation to their surroundings as they travel farther out from the Sun. Furthermore, by determining how much wave energy is transferred to the solar wind, we study how ion-cyclotron waves contribute to its heating and acceleration., This work supported by the NSF-REU solar physics program at SAO, grant number AGS-1850750 and contract NNN06AA01C from NASA to SAO

In recent years zebrafish have become commonly used as a model for studying human traits and disorders. By assaying wild-type zebrafish in a variety of conditions, we determined optimal parameters that avoid significant developmental defects or physical damage; these include morphological imaging of larvae at two time points (3 days post fertilization (dpf) and 5 dpf) coupled with motion tracking of behavior at 5 dpf. In summary, we describe a rapid parallel pipeline to characterize morphological and behavioral features of individual larvae in a robust and consistent fashion, thereby improving our ability to better identify genes important in human traits and disorders.AUTHOR SUMMARYZebrafish (Danio rerio) are a well-established model organism for the study of neurodevelopmental disorders. Due to their small size, fast reproduction, and genetic homology with humans, zebrafish have been widely used for characterizing and screening candidate genes for many disorders, including autism-spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, and epilepsy. Although several studies have described the use of high-throughput morphological and behavioral assays, few combine multiple assays in a single zebrafish larva. Here, we optimized a platform to characterize morphometric features at two developmental time points in addition to behavioral traits of zebrafish larvae. We then used this approach to characterize two autism candidate genes (SYNGAP1 and SLC7A5) in two CRISPR-generated zebrafish null mutant models we developed in house. These data recapitulate previously published results related to enhanced seizure activity, while identifying additional defects not previously reported. We propose that our phenotyping platform represents a feasible method for maximizing the use of single zebrafish larvae in the characterization of additional mutants relevant to neurodevelopmental disorders.

- Abstract
Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) debut in 75% of cases with liver metastases (LMNETs), whose therapeutic approach includes surgical resection and liver transplantation, while liver radioembolization with 90 Y-microspheres (TARE) is reserved for non-operable patients usually due to high tumor burden. We present the accumulated experience of 10 years in TARE treatment of LMNETs in order to describe the safety and the effectiveness of the oncological response in terms of survival, as well as to detect the prognostic factors involved.Of 136 TARE procedures, performed between January 2006 and December 2016, 30 LMNETs (11.1%) were retrospectively analyzed. The study variables were: Tumor response, time to liver progression, survival at 3 and 5 years, overall mortality and mortality associated with TARE. The radiological response assessment was assessed using RECIST 1.1 and mRECIST criteria. An average activity of 2.4 ± 1.3 GBq of 90 Y was administered. No patient presented postembolization syndrome or carcinoid syndrome. There were also no vascular complications associated with the procedure. According to RECIST 1.1 criteria at 6 months, 78.6% presented partial response and 21.4% stable disease, there was no progression or complete response (1 by mRECIST). Survival at 3 and 5 years was 73% in both cases.TARE treatment with 90 Y-microspheres in LMNETs, applied within a multidisciplinary approach, is a safe procedure, with low morbidity, capable of achieving a high rate of radiological response and achieving lasting tumor responses.

The development of visible-light-mediated allylation of unactivated sp3 C-H bonds is reported. The remote allylation was directed by the amidyl radical, which was generated by photocatalytic fragmentation of a pre-functionalized amide precursor. Both aromatic and aliphatic amide derivatives could successfully deliver the remote C-H allylation products in good yields. A variety of electron deficient allyl sulfone systems could be used as δ-carbon radical acceptor.
