1. Focusability of laser pulses at petawatt transport intensities in thin-film compression

Abstract

Thin-film compression (TFC) and the focusability of high-power laser pulses after self-phase modulation in thin films at transport intensities (∼1 TW∕cm 2 ) for petawatt laser systems is demonstrated. High-energy (∼296 mJ) laser pulses are compressed from ∼55 fs to ∼31 fs. Additionally, the focusability of high-power (∼45–55 TW) flat-top laser pulses after spectral broadening in thin films is found to be largely maintained, showing only modest decreases in the energy contained in the central part of the focal spot. In light of these findings, TFC offers a method for moving toward single-cycle pulse durations at significantly higher energies than those found at present, and if beam instabilities can be mitigated, maybe even higher intensities.

Abstract

TRIUMF has developed H- ion sources for decades and now they are being employed in TRIUMF cyclotrons as well as in various other machines. A high current version can produce up to 60 mA [1]. A medium range source is optimized to produce 20 mA. A new smaller H- ion source with a plasma volume of 50 mm x 75 mm ion source is being developed to produce 5 mA at a very low emittance and run years without changing the filament. Due to the low emittance and relatively little required maintenance, this ion source will suit cyclotrons as well as accelerators looking for reliable, stable operation with very low maintenance. Having four electrodes, this ion source can run at optimum extraction voltage while delivering the beam from 1 kV to 60 kV with little or no degradation of the beam quality. Performance of the source including beam current, arc parameters, emittance and filament lifetime are discussed in this paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The aim of EKLIPSE is to develop a mechanism to inform European-scale policy on biodiversity and related environmental challenges. This paper considers two fundamental aspects of the decision-support mechanism being developed by EKLIPSE: 1) the engagement of relevant actors from science, policy and society to jointly identify evidence for decision making; and 2) the networking of scientists and other holders of knowledge on biodiversity and other relevant evidence. The mechanism being developed has the potential not only to build communities of knowledge holders but to build informal networks among those with similar interests in evidence, be they those that seek to use evidence or those who are building evidence, or both. EKLIPSE has been successful in linking these people and in contributing to building informal networks of requesters of evidence, and experts of evidence and its synthesis. We have yet to see, however, significant engagement of formal networks of knowledge holders. Future success, however, relies on the continued involvement with and engagement of networks, a high degree of transparency within the processes and a high flexibility of structures to adapt to different requirements that arise with the broad range of requests to and activities of EKLIPSE.

Abstract

International audience; Occlusive brain ischemia and micro-strokes are the most frequent brain pathologies, particularly in older patients and a major cause of dementia. Currently, we are missing appropriate methodology to study micro-strokes in experimental animals. In vivo two-photon laser-scanning microscopy (2P-LSM) and transgenic mouse models expressing cell type specific reporters have been used to examine ischemia-related insults, e.g. perturbations of neuronal process morphology and local blood flow in the MCAO - middle cerebral artery occlusion-model. Glia and pericytes can be visualized by selective fluorescent protein expression, e.g. astrocytes by their cyan-fluorescent ECFP, pericytes by red-fluorescent tdtomato and microglia by green fluorescent EGFP expression. In these mice, the breakdown of the blood brain barrier and the immediate as well as long-term cellular responses can be monitored. A new prototype of microCT incorporating a fast X-ray XPAD3 camera has been recently set up to allow cerebral angiography at high sampling rate. Preliminary data indicate that it is useful to monitor blood perfusion disturbance (i.e. lateralization) in the brain of tumor-bearing mice following retro-orbital injection of iodinated contrast agent. We expect this technology to be adequate to assess in real time the impact of acute stroke models on brain blood perfusion. By localizing perfusion anomalies, we will evaluate the extent of non-perfused areas and correlate these observations with subsequent behavioral deficits, and with local changes in myelin content in white matter tracks. The spectral properties of the XPAD3 detector moreover allow for the simultaneous identification and localization of several contrast agents opening the way to whole body multicolor imaging of vessels and inflammatory cells in the context of microstrokes.

Abstract

Climate change will affect all sectors of society and the environment at all scales, ranging from the continental to the national and local. Decision-makers and other interested citizens need to be able to access reliable science-based information to help them respond to the risks of climate change impacts and assess opportunities for adaptation. Participatory integrated assessment (IA) tools combine knowledge from diverse scientific disciplines, take account of the value and importance of stakeholder ‘lay insight’ and facilitate a two-way iterative process of exploration of ‘what if’s’ to enable decision-makers to test ideas and improve their understanding of the complex issues surrounding adaptation to climate change. This paper describes the conceptual design of a participatory IA tool, the CLIMSAVE IA Platform, based on a professionally facilitated stakeholder engagement process. The CLIMSAVE (climate change integrated methodology for cross-sectoral adaptation and vulnerability in Europe) Platform is a user-friendly, interactive web-based tool that allows stakeholders to assess climate change impacts and vulnerabilities for a range of sectors, including agriculture, forests, biodiversity, coasts, water resources and urban development. The linking of models for the different sectors enables stakeholders to see how their interactions could affect European landscape change. The relationship between choice, uncertainty and constraints is a key cross-cutting theme in the conduct of past participatory IA. Integrating scenario development processes with an interactive modelling platform is shown to allow the exploration of future uncertainty as a structural feature of such complex problems, encouraging stakeholders to explore adaptation choices within real-world constraints of future resource availability and environmental and institutional capacities, rather than seeking the ‘right’ answers.

Abstract

This article proposes a methodology for the construction and the calibration of a micro-economic urban land-use model within an extended Cellular Automata (CA) framework. The methodology is applied to processes of residential spread in a part of the commuting periphery of Brussels. The model hypothesizes that households effect on urban development, through their valuation of neighbourhood externalities. A coarse sensitivity analysis is undertaken in order to explore the relationship between household neighbourhood preferences and emerging spatial morphologies. These macro-structures are measured with different indices in order to parameterize the model.

Abstract

Development of Decision Support System for environmental applications is very complex andchallenging task. Increasing “wickedness” of environmental decision problems, growing number of affectedsubjects and keen competition between conflicting interests make decisions and decision support difficult.Decision Support Systems have been developed since 70s to help in complex decision situations whentacking with semi- or unstructured problems. Notwithstanding their popularity, the success of DSSdevelopment is uncertain and many computerised decision support tools have failed when dealing withwicked problems. The following article describes the development methodology and progress for mDSS, adecision support system for water resource management, which has been developed under the EC 5th FPR&D project MULINO. The mDSS tool is designed to integrate environmental models - especiallyhydrologic ones - with multicriteria evaluation procedures.

Abstract

We have shown, for the first time in the world, the production of 10 PW peak power laser pulses and their propagation to an experimental area at the Extreme Light Infrastructure - Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP). We are also steadily running the laser system for experimental campaigns, increasing the output power levels delivered for experiments and fine-tuning the parameters of the laser pulses, the operational procedures, and the operational teams. During our presentation, we will show the laser developments at ELI-NP emphasizing the 10 PW peak power demonstrations and the latest results for the HPLS beam delivery.

Abstract

Two types of anionic polyelectrolites, co-polymer of the acrylamide-acrylic acid (PA type) and co-polymer of the acrylic acid-vinyl acetate (PV type), obtained by gamma and electron beams irradiation, are presented. The experimental results concerning the typical characteristics achieved for these polyelectrolites and their applications in real waste water treatments are also presented. The influence of the chemical composition of the irradiated aqueous solutions and the radiation absorbed dose level upon the characteristics of these co-polymers are discussed. The required radiation absorbed dose levels to produce these co-polymers are rather small, from 0.4 kGy to 1 kGy for PA type and 3 kGy to 4 kGy for PV type. It is possible to obtain a very wide range of PA and PV characteristics and therefore a large area of application by controlling the chemical composition of the solution to be treated and by a suitable adjustment of the radiation absorbed dose level. Abstract

At TRIUMF, H- ion sources have been characterized on a teststand to improve the understanding of their performance. Measured beam characteristics such as current, emittance, and e/H- ratio were correlated with source conditions as a function of relevant plasma parameters. Plasma densities, temperatures, and plasma potentials were measured with a Langmuir probe and correlated with beam properties for different confining magnetic fields and different values of arc power and gas pressure. The mechanism of beam extraction was studied by correlating plasma potential profiles with the corresponding plasma electrode bias voltages obtained from optimizing ion source outputs. Abstract

LAP2beta is an integral membrane protein of the nuclear envelope involved in chromatin and nuclear architecture. Using the yeast two-hybrid system, we have cloned a novel LAP2beta-binding protein, mGCL, which contains a BTB/POZ domain and is the mouse homologue of the Drosophila germ-cell-less (GCL) protein. In Drosophila embryos, GCL was shown to be essential for germ cell formation and was localized to the nuclear envelope. Here, we show that, in mammalian cells, GCL is co-localized with LAP2beta to the nuclear envelope. Nuclear fractionation studies reveal that mGCL acts as a nuclear matrix component and not as an integral protein of the nuclear envelope. Recently, mGCL was found to interact with the DP3alpha component of the E2F transcription factor. This interaction reduced the transcriptional activity of the E2F-DP heterodimer, probably by anchoring the complex to the nuclear envelope. We demonstrate here that LAP2beta is also capable of reducing the transcriptional activity of the E2F-DP complex and that it is more potent than mGCL in doing so. Abstract

This study is a part of a larger experimental and numerical campaign intended to evaluate the influence of the turbulence intensity at the inlet of the terminal air distribution systems on the local draft sensation and thermal discomfort of ventilation users. In this paper we present preliminary results of CFD simulations using a realistic model of human body along with an experimental validation. The model is further used in a piston distribution scheme to evaluate the influence of turbulence intensity on the comfort indicators. The recorded velocity, turbulence and temperature fields allowed us to estimate the distributions of DR, PPD and PMV indexes. For the investigated case, the results indicated a direct correlation.
