The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, 2nd-edition (ADOS-2) Toddler Module is the current gold-standard measure of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a neurodevelopmental condition more frequently diagnosed in toddler boys than girls. Some evidence suggests that behaviors assessed by the Toddler Module may capture an ASD phenotype that is more common among boys than girls. Focus on these behaviors may contribute to sex differences in ASD diagnoses. Particularly, the ADOS-2 may equivalently weight social communication behaviors on which boys and girls are expected to look similar and behaviors that which girls may, due to early socialization, perform differently than boys. As a consequence, the Toddler Module may fail to identify ASD in girls who should qualify for the diagnosis. The current study examined the possibility that some ADOS-2 items may function differently for boys and girls by testing the degree to which eight items equivalently related to a social communication latent factor across sexes in toddlers with suspected ASD. Inconsistent with hypotheses, tests of differential item functioning revealed no evidence of sex differences, suggesting that the Toddler Module assesses these eight items similarly for boys and girls. Examination of factor loadings point to Creativity/Imagination as an area of interest for future research.

The evolutionary origins of chordates and their diversification into the three major subphyla of tunicates, vertebrates, and cephalochordates pose myriad questions about the genetic and developmental mechanisms underlying this radiation. Studies in non-vertebrate chordates have refined our model of what the ancestral chordate may have looked like, and have revealed the pre-vertebrate origins of key cellular and developmental traits. Work in the major tunicate laboratory model Ciona has benefitted greatly from the emergence of CRISPR/Cas9 techniques for targeted gene disruption. Here we review some of the important findings made possible by CRISPR in Ciona , and present our latest protocols and recommended practices for plasmid-based, tissue-specific CRISPR/Cas9-mediated mutagenesis. ObjectiveChildren experience distress after surgery. Associations exist between parent reassurance (e.g., "It's OK") and child distress, but little is known about the causal direction of these interactions. This study examined sequential relations between mothers' and fathers' reassurance and children's distress.Methods146 families with 2- to 11-year-olds undergoing elective surgery participated. Time-event coding and time-window sequential analysis examined whether reassurance preceded or followed child distress. Secondary analyses examined the relation of child sex and parent anxiety with the reassurance/distress contingency.ResultsReassurance was positively correlated with distress; however, nonverbal distress was less likely to start following reassurance and was also more likely to continue following reassurance. Mothers were more likely to reassure following boys' verbal distress, and mothers with higher anxiety were more likely to reassure following nonverbal distress.ConclusionsWhereas parental reassurance may prevent the start of child distress, it might maintain ongoing child distress.

The present study investigated whether different forms of disordered-eating-related cognitions and psychological flexibility were associated with psychological distress among female Asian American and European American college students in the United States. Disordered-eating-related cognitions examined in the present study included thoughts (a) associated with the fear of gaining weight, (b) on perceived importance of having an ideal weight and shape as a means of being accepted by others, and (c) of perceived self-worth related to self-control over diet and weight levels. Data from 87 Asian American and 231 European American female college students were used for the present analyses. In both groups, all forms of disordered-eating cognitions were positively associated with psychological distress, which was in turn inversely associated with psychological flexibility. In the Asian American group, cognitions on perceived importance of having an ideal body shape and weight to be socially accepted by others and psychological flexibility were uniquely related to psychological distress when controlling for other disordered-eating cognitions (i.e., thoughts related to fear of weight gain, self-worth from feeling in control of eating), age, and Body Mass Index (BMI). In the European American group, when controlling for other study variables, only psychological flexibility uniquely related to psychological distress. Implications of the present findings for counseling practice are discussed.

The present study investigated whether young adults' disordered eating cognitions predicted attitudes toward seeking professional psychological services. Two hundred and eighty three 18- to 24-year-old undergraduate students completed a survey package that included measures of disordered eating cognitions and help-seeking attitudes. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that greater disordered eating cognitions uniquely predicted lower degrees of favorable help-seeking attitudes overall, lower stigma tolerance with respect to seeking professional psychological services, lower interpersonal openness in the context of help-seeking, and lower confidence in psychological professionals. The findings suggest that outreach interventions should, among other things, focus on stigma associated with help-seeking and disordered eating problems.

This article reviews the various settings in which infants, children, and adolescents experience pain during acute medical procedures and issues related to referral of children to pain management teams. In addition, self-report, reports by others, physiological monitoring, and direct observation methods of assessment of pain and related constructs are discussed and recommendations are provided. Pharmacological, other medical approaches, and empirically supported cognitive behavioral interventions are reviewed. Salient features of the interventions are discussed, and recommendations are made for necessary components of effective treatment interventions.

This study examined how nursing students' training status and their anxiety impacts their assessment of children's pain. The sample included 100 psychology undergraduate students, 87 beginning nursing students, and 35 advanced nursing students. Participants watched a video of a child receive a finger stick and then rated their own state anxiety and the child's pain via visual analog scales. Advanced nursing training was related to lower anxiety, which in turn, was related to lower pain ratings. These findings augment our understanding of how nursing training influences personal anxiety during pediatric needle procedures, which may impact pediatric pain ratings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
