This research determines the student's learning strategies based on their learning styles. This research applied qualitative study. The subject of this research is the students of English literature class A in Universitas Negeri Makassar, who were selected through a purposive sampling technique. Thirty-five students were chosen as the subjects of this study. The data were obtained through questionnaires and interviews and then analyzed based on producers of data analysis identification, classification, and descriptive analysis. The result showed that i) there are some learning styles that students have, such as visual, auditory, and kinesthetic (VAK) learning styles; and ii) students' learning strategies based on their learning style where subjects engaged in several learning activities or methodologies. Two types of learning techniques were primarily considered: individual and group strategies. The individual strategies were marked by all of the activities the subjects had done, and the group strategies described the learning actions employed by the subjects to comprehend the knowledge or the lesson by engaging friends who could help them.

This study aims to reveal the profile of open-start problem-solving with ethnomathematics regarding student learning styles. This research is a qualitative research study on 3 out of 31 students of Junior High School of 3 Magetan taken by purposive sampling. The three students carried out four stages: understanding the problem, planning problem-solving strategies, implementing problem-solving strategies, and reviewing again. The results of the research show that students with a visual learning style solve problems by understanding problems through writing known and being asked and drawing illustrations, planning problem-solving strategies by making examples, carrying out solving strategies by working on the calculation process; students with an auditory learning style solve problems by understanding problems through writing known and being asked, planning strategies by making problems and formulating formulas used, implementing solutions by doing calculations and reviewing; students with a kinesthetic learning style solve problems by understanding issues through writing known and being asked, making examples and writing the formulas used, carrying out solving strategies by applying the calculation process and reviewing the results obtained. However, of the three styles, the results of the accepted work were not correct because they did not write down the conclusions and were not thorough enough.

This research aimed to investigate the impact of learning strategies with learning styles on learning performance in disaster mitigation. Problem Based Learning (PBL) and Direct Instruction (DI) are the strategies used. The learning styles used as moderator variables are kinaesthetic, visual and auditory. The research subjects included two junior high schools, SMPN 1 Sidoarjo and SMPN 1 Maospati, with a total of 122 students. The two-way ANOVA analysis technique was used to process the data obtained statistically. This research indicates that PBL strategy with visual learning style is superior to DI strategy with other learning styles in terms of learning achievement in disaster mitigation. This research has shown that considering the specific learning strategy and learning style of students contributes to positive learning outcomes in disaster mitigation.

The present study investigated the effect of computer- and mobile-mediated shadowing on Iranian impulsive and reflective English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners' speaking ability. To collect the data, 100 intermediate participants, whose proficiency level was measured by administering Oxford Quick Placement Test (OQPT), took the pretest of speaking. A personality type questionnaire was also used to detect the learners' impulsivity or reflectivity. There were four experimental groups including 1) computer (Prezi) + shadowing + impulsive learners; 2) computer (Prezi) + shadowing + reflective learners; 3) mobile (WhatsApp) + shadowing +impulsive learners; and 4) mobile (WhatsApp) + shadowing + reflective learners. Then, the posttest was administered. After the descriptive and inferential analyses of the pre- and posttests, significant improvement was observed among the four experimental groups' speaking ability. However, reflective learners were shown to outperform the impulsive learners in both computer and mobile-mediated shadowing groups. The results can be beneficial to English language learners, teachers, teacher trainers, as well as material developers.

The low knowledge and love of students for culture, plus based on preliminary analysis, it is known that geometry skills are relatively low. The a need for harmony between student and teacher learning styles to maximize student engagement and focus in the classroom. So this study aims to create a culture-based Geometry learning design that effectively improves students' geometry skills in terms of students' learning styles and domicile. Furthermore, specifically examines geometry skills in terms of learning styles and student domicile. The subjects of the study were students of SMP Negeri 1 Ciruas and SMP Negeri 1 Tanara, Serang Regency. The research used the R&D method of prototype development model and quality research method. The results of the study found that the invention-based Ethnobra (Ethnomathematical Geogebra) design was valid, practical, and effective in improving students' geometry skills. The results of the subsequent analysis found that urban students had better geometry skills than rural students. It's also known that students with a tendency towards kinesthetic learning styles have the highest geometry skills. This study recommends that teachers use the Ethnobra model by integrating Geogebra applications in Geometry learning, especially for students who go to urban schools and with kinesthetic learning styles.

Mathematics is a subject that is extensively used in real-life situations, but it has been found to be a difficult subject to master. Accordingly, mathematics anxiety has been found to be highly prevalent in students' lives, whereby learning styles have been underlined as one of the factors that may impact attainment of mathematics skills. This study aims to determine the relationship between learning styles and mathematics anxiety. The correlational study was conducted by using questionnaire adapted from Dunn and Dunn Model and Mathematics Anxiety Scale; involving 389 secondary school students located in the southern region of Malaysia. The study's findings revealed a positive correlation and distinguished between learning styles and mathematics anxiety. It shows that learning styles have an impact on mathematics anxiety. Hence, this study helps the students to embrace and improve their learning styles to minimize the level of anxiety towards mathematics, while the teachers may find it useful in guiding the students to control their mathematics anxiety.

The understanding mathematical concept is an error that often occurs in classroom learning among students when solving mathematical problems. The most difficult part for students is solving problems, because it requires numeracy skills, high concept mastery, as well as the ability to use good language, and so on so that students don't make any more mistakes when working on math problems. Student errors in solving mathematics problems are (1) errors in connecting concepts, (2) errors in operations and (3) errors in constructing concepts. The problem is what is the structure of students' mathematical misconceptions in solving mathematical problems based on cognitive style. The method in this research, namely an exploratory descriptive approach, aims to determine the structure of students' errors based on cognitive style in solving mathematical problems. Analysis of research data, namely: (1) Data reduction, (2) Data exposure, (3) data triangulation and (4) drawing conclusions. The cognitive styles referred to are field dependent and independent. The conclusions are (1) the structure of conceptual errors with an applied field dependent cognitive style begins with disequilibrating, then solving by linking applicable concepts, and (2) the structure of conceptual errors with a field independent cognitive style begins with disequilibrating, then solving using analyse.

Universal design for learning (UDL) is a pedagogical framework that utilizes the principles of equal access, flexibility, simplicity, perceptibility, and efficiency in the process of teaching and learning. This multi-institutional cross-sectional study examined instructional methods and designs that occupational therapy students identified to be useful or not useful for their diverse learning needs based on principles of UDL. The study also sought to determine if select methods or designs were perceived to enhance learning for those who are neurodivergent in contrast to other students. An online survey was distributed to students across four occupational therapy programs. The survey consisted of demographic questions, lists of instructional methods and designs framed by the Center for Applied Technology (CAST) domains, and two general questions about overall learning and self-efficacy. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and non-parametric comparison. Of the 81 participants, results indicated that nearly all perceived an instructor who is approachable, learning through real world activities, and practicing hands-on skills in the classroom to be useful for their learning. Students with neurodivergence identified six learning methods significantly less useful than not neurodivergent students including doing first with discussion to follow, being preassigned group membership by the instructor, flexible seating and classroom arrangement, and course requirements with flexible due dates. The CAST domain of engagement had the strongest impact on student preferences. This indicates that attention to engaging students and methods that draw students into the why of learning may meet all student needs in graduate occupational therapy education.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of scripted biology curriculum as a means of providing students with the information required to increase content knowledge, while comparing curriculum developed by the teacher that utilizesthe Understanding by Design (UbD) framework (Wiggins & McTighe, 2005). The study used a mixed method, concurrent triangulation design which revealed that there was a significant difference between student growth from the pretest to the posttest. The teacher reflection logs and student focus groups identified two themes regarding science content knowledge: instructional/learning style and using discussion within the instructional cycle for both curricula. It was evident that the increase in content knowledge was associated with the utilization of discussion during the learning cycle. The teacher reflection logs and student focus groups also identified two themes when looking at the perception of the learning environment: the effect of teacher relationship on instruction and the effect of time on the learning environment. According to the instrument used, both groups of students showed growth, however, there was a larger gain among the students receiving the Understanding by Design curriculum. A major contributing factor for the growth among all students was the relationship the teacher had with them to meet their individual academic needs.

The aim of this study is to investigate the relations between secondary education students' learning styles and their use of social networks. The samples of the research designed by relational screening model consist of 1281 students reached by convenient sampling method, one of the non-probability sampling methods. In this study, "Kolb's Learning Styles Inventory" and "The Survey of the use Social networks" were used as data collections tools. Frequency, percentage and chi-square techniques were used for data analyses. As a results of the study, it was found that the most used social networks are Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Google Plus among students. In addition, students use social networks mostly for sharing photo, followed by making friends, sharing videos and playing games respectively. Students who have assimilative learning styles use Facebook, accommodative learning styles use Google Plus, converging styles use Twitter and diverging learning styles use other social networks. Moreover, it was found that students who has accommodative and assimilative learning styles use social networks to share videos, diverging learning styles use social networks to share photos and converging learning styles use social networks to make friends. However, it wasn't found statistically significance difference between the students' learning styles and both preferring social networks and the purpose of using them. In the study, it was investigated the relation between students' learning style based on Kolb's experiential learning theory and the use of social networks. Apart from Kolb's Model, it is recommended that some other models like Myers and Briggs' type indicator model, Lawrence's learning type model, Fleming and Mill's learning style model (VARK), Felder and Silverman's learning style model or Reinert's learning styles model can be preferred by authors to reveal the relationship with the use of social networks. Thus, the relationships between learning styles, one of the most important individual differences that facilitate learning, and social networks can be revealed in more detail and contribute to the literature on integrating social networking into educational environments.

The interrupted case study is a structured way to engage students in active learning. Interruptions, or pauses for reflection and discussion scheduled within the case-study presentation, provide students with a chance to collaborate and engage in critical thinking. Critical thinking style, which is a measure of how one tends to think critically, provides insight into how one tackles problem solving. This article describes a pilot project that combined critical-thinking style and an interrupted case study, delivered over a two-class-period time frame, to four college courses. The project's goals were to assess students' self-reported knowledge, self-reported ability, changes in thinking, and intentions to use their critical thinking style in the future. The University of Florida Critical Thinking Inventory and an end-of-session evaluation were administered online, and 110 students voluntarily responded. Results indicated that many students enjoyed the discussion-based and problem-solving structure of the interrupted case study. Results also showed increases in students' self-reported knowledge about critical thinking style and content covered in the case study. For teachers looking to pilot an interrupted case study with a critical thinking style component, two class sessions can have a positive effect on student learning and encourage critical thinking.

The decline in English majors has energized instructors to upskill for the post-COVID Gen Z student. Toward that end, this small-scale (n=20), one-semester study of an upper-division literature class identifies the preferred learning styles of English majors at a public comprehensive regional university in Kentucky. The participants represent national English major demographics. The research methods are quantitative and qualitative. Eight figures and an appendix are included. Three guidelines emerge for responding to the needs of Gen Z students: (1) keep communication brief, (2) co-create, and (3) interact in-person. The findings about English major learning preferences uphold cross-disciplinary research on active learning in the post-COVID era by indicating ways our teaching styles can keep pace with the needs of our changing majors. In addition to the participants' experience in the investigator's course, the survey collects their experience of teaching styles in six core courses in the English major. One drawback of the study is the small participant sampling. Future studies might investigate the difference between students' preferred learning styles and instructors' actual teaching styles. Building the English major back better calls for putting accepted theory into reskilled practices.

This research delves into the washback effects of the Hong Kong Diploma of Education Examination (HKDSE) on the learning strategies employed by secondary school students in Hong Kong. By surveying 50 students to assess their English learning strategy profiles, this study seeks to identify potential biases in strategy selection indicative of examination influence. A subset of participants was further interviewed, enabling a deeper exploration of the underlying reasons behind their strategy choices. Thematic analysis of these interviews revealed that while students recognize the intended washback of the examination on their learning strategies, its actual influence might be diminished by their reservations regarding high stakes testing's effect on authentic English learning. The overarching sentiment expressed frustrations and conflict between the study of English language, and exam-centric pressures.

This study aimed to investigate the perception of STEM students (n = 147) on using mobile Augmented Reality (AR) across gender and learning styles in physics online classes. It utilized embedded mixed-method research and purposive sampling. An instrument named Students Perception in Integrating Mobile AR in Physics Class was developed and has undergone a series of validations such as item generation from literature review, content validation, cognitive interview, pilot testing, and exploratory factor analysis revealing two factors, CFA with indices that are of acceptable value, and good Cronbach alpha ([alpha] = 0.86) for reliability. Mean, standard deviation, percentages, two samples t-test, and thematic analysis were used to analyze the data. Results revealed that all students have a source of internet connection as well as a device to use and most of them have a very stable to somewhat stable internet connection. Positive feedback was shown in terms of overall learning experience and perception across gender and learning styles. However, in terms of overall usability, females have more ease of use compared to males and kinesthetic learners only have a positive response. It was also found that there is no significant difference across gender. Moreover, the integration of AR in a physics lesson has received excellent responses from both students with and without prior experience in a classroom setting. All of the difficulties the students encountered were technological in nature. There are also opportunities to improve the integration of mobile AR in the technical and learning process. These results suggest that teachers should integrate mobile AR in online physics classes but should consider factors such as Internet connection, device, gender, and learning styles in developing the application.

The purpose of this study is to comprehensively describe the results of the analysis of the ability to understand concepts and misconceptions in terms of differences in learning styles, as well as gender differences. The data to be collected in this study is in the form of primary data and secondary data. The primary data is obtained from primary sources and secondary data is obtained from secondary sources. The primary source in this study is informants, namely students, and the secondary source is documentation of student test scores as an illustration of student abilities. The instruments in this study are student learning style tests and auxiliary instruments in the form of misconception diagnostic tests. Learning style test in the form of a questionnaire. This instrument is used to uncover visual, auditorial, and kinesthetic learning style variables. Misconception diagnostic tests use the Certainty of Response Index (CRI). The results of the CRI analysis based on student answer criteria are: (a) 5.83% of student problem solving do not know the concept (lucky guess); (b) 22.30% of the student problem solvers did not know the concept; (c) 50.18% of student problem solving mastered the concept well; and (d) 21.69% of student problem solving occurred misconceptions.

The characteristic differences of participants affect their reactions to various gamification elements. Thus, it is critical to reveal the impact different type of students on gamified interventions, and the relation of personality features and gamified learning process. In this study, it is compered the motivation and perception of participants with different learning styles towards gamified learning process, and determined the correlation between motivation and perception. It is also figured out the enabler and barrier factors of students' motivation and perception by learning styles in the 7-week gamified learning process. Participants consist of 95 prospective teachers with different learning styles. This study is based on the triangulation as a mixed reserch method. As data collection tools, the instructional materials motivation survey, course evaluation questionnaire, learning styles inventory of Felder and Soloman, and interview form are used. It is conducted the non-parametric tests, Mann-Whitney U and Spearman's rank correlation for quantitative data analysis, and the content analysis for in-detail qualitative data analysis. Results point out that there is not any significant differences between categories of each learning style dimension in terms of motivation and perception. Students have the high level motivation and perception by each category of four learning style dimensions. There are positive and medium correlations between motivation and perception of students by learning styles. It is also determined the various enabler and barrier factors of students' motivation and perception in gamified learning process. Frequencies and percentages of enablers are the higher than barriers considering students' learning styles. These results prove that the gamified activities-tasks considering the learning styles have a power to motivate students with different characteristics to the learning process and provide the positive perception towards the gamified process. It is also discussed the quantitative and qualitative directions for the further researches.

Mathematical creative thinking skill often becomes the orientation of mathematics learning, aiming to enhance students' creativity in mathematics. Recognizing that creativity encompasses the capacity for thinking creatively and creativity disposition is essential. Building on this conceptual foundation, the primary objective of this study is to develop a comprehensive model illustrating the relationship between students' aptitude for mathematical creative thinking and their creative disposition. The research methodology employed in this study aligned with the framework of cause-and-effect analysis. The study cohort consisted of 36 students, carefully selected by a cluster random sampling technique. The research instruments included a mathematical creative thinking ability assessment and a creative disposition scale. The data was analyzed using the Non-Recursive Structural Equation Modeling. The results showed the reciprocal cause-and-effect dynamic between mathematical creative thinking ability and creative disposition, exhibiting a mutually influential relationship with determination coefficients of 21.83% and 21.05%. This shows that mathematical creative thinking ability is better at explaining mathematical creative disposition than mathematical creative disposition explaining mathematical creative thinking ability, with a relatively small difference (0.78%). This study also concluded that an optimal approach to mathematics pedagogy entails a balanced and simultaneous focus on nurturing mathematical creative thinking ability and disposition.

In educational settings, reflective thinking is often overlooked, with an excessive emphasis on final answers, resulting in students needing more ability to evaluate and reconstruct their problem-solving processes. The ability for reflective thinking is required by students in solving problems, including numerical problems. This study uses a qualitative approach to focus on field-independent students' numerical problem-solving processes. The data collection technique begins by administering the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT), a valid and reliable numeracy problem instrument, and conducting in-depth interviews. Two students with similar initial mathematical abilities and field-independent cognitive styles were selected as research subjects. Findings reveal that these students face challenges such as lengthy problem descriptions and a lack of confidence but gradually develop strategies, emphasizing repeated problem analysis, concept interconnections, and error awareness. Researcher-provided scaffolding facilitates critical reflection, enabling the construction of new ideas. These results have practical implications for teachers, suggesting the need to design lessons that cater to diverse cognitive styles, providing more complex problems to field-independent students to enhance their problem-solving skills.

This study identifies women college engineering students' perception of online Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning and factors that influence their learning motivation during the COVID-19 period. By conducting interviews with ten women engineering students and applying attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction (ARCS) model, this study aims to answer two questions: (1) How did women college engineering students perceive their experience with online STEM learning during the pandemic? (2) What category/categories based on ARCS motivational design model primarily account for women college engineering students' learning motivation with online STEM learning during the pandemic? The results show that the online learning format influenced women college engineering students' perception regarding their academic plans, learning styles, learning environments, peer learning, and learning satisfaction. The most influential categories from ARCS model were 'confidence' and 'attention'. Findings suggest that the online STEM learning format influenced women college engineering students' learning motivation. The online format led to (1) low expectations for attention category when analyzed using ARCS model, (2) anticipation of more self-control, and (3) a desire for more peer interactions in their online STEM learning. As students would have new expectations for the role of online learning due to their experience during the pandemic, assessing women students' emerging motivational needs for STEM online learning is critical in developing a more inclusive instructional system design process in the future.

The current study, which uses a survey approach, aims to identify middle school students who visit BILSEMs (Science and Art Centers) in terms of their creativity and learning preferences and to look into the impact of various factors on these traits. In the 2021-2022 academic year, 214 fifth, sixth, and seventh graders were chosen using the purposive sampling technique. The "How Creative Are You?" scale, "Kolb Learning Style Inventory," and a personal information form were used as data gathering tools. The study's findings indicate that the creativity of the participating students is above medium, and the majority have "converging" learning styles. At the same time, the minority has "diverging" learning styles, that gender, grade level, type of school, BILSEM program, and family income level have no bearing on the children's creativity, and learning styles vary significantly depending on these factors. Additionally, there was no discernible link between the students' learning preferences and creativity.

Some countries, including Indonesia, have a framework for understanding how students receive and process math concepts as new knowledge through learning styles. Learning style, particularly Kolb's model, is one of the learning styles that contribute to students' success in learning. Experts have explored the characteristics of Kolb's learning style and found many effects on student learning outcomes as a starting point in learning mathematical concepts. However, the research still focuses on exploring integer operation materials in specific math abilities. The researchers hardly found any discourse to study, such as exploring number patterns in computational thinking and semiotic mathematics. Therefore, this study aims to explore mathematical semiotics and computational thinking on number patterns in terms of Kolb's learning style model. This research uses hermeneutic phenomenology to explore through written tests and interviews. An explanation of the components, characteristics, and semiotic characteristics of mathematical and computational thinking seen in students who have the Kolb model of learning in solving problems of number patterns is part of the interpretation. These findings can be used as benchmarks in developing mathematics materials. Thus, this knowledge is a concrete foundation to guide future advances in curriculum, assessment methods, and learning approaches in mathematics education, particularly in algebra.

Due to its positive results, active learning has spread to most areas of knowledge of Civil Engineering. Many of these studies used only one technique, which is limiting given the diverse learning styles that the students may have. The road geometric design is the area that has been the least explored in Civil engineering. Therefore, the objective of this study is to show the implementation of multiple different active learning techniques in online road geometric design courses. The study shows an iterative implementation of multiple active learning techniques throughout the sequence of the three undergraduate courses in Ecuador. As a result, positive student perception was found from the combination of several active techniques. Each technique, called 'learning moment', was distributed weekly and separated from the others. The students gave the courses an average score between 8.34 to 9.06/10. At each learning moment, there were many positive comments and some easily resolved negative ones. The combination of multiple different active learning techniques, shown in this study, can be used in other courses of Civil Engineering, Engineering, or in similar areas of knowledge.

This research investigates the impact of ChatGPT-generated feedback on the writing skills of first-year computing students at a Saudi University. Employing a qualitative research design, the study involved 111 male students, blinded to the switch from human to ChatGPT-generated feedback, ensuring unbiased reflections on their experiences. Over six weeks, students' reactions to feedback were meticulously analyzed, revealing nuanced emotional, psychological, and educational impacts. The findings, organized into four distinct themes - Emotional and Psychological Responses, Perceived Quality and Usefulness, Progress and Development, and Feedback Content and Delivery - offer rich insights into the multifaceted experiences of students. While some students responded to the feedback provided during weeks 4 and 5 (ChatGPT-generated feedback), perceiving it as a catalyst for learning and self-improvement, others expressed concerns about its consistency and personalization. The study highlights the potential of ChatGPT in education, while also illuminating the need for a balanced, adaptive, and personalized approach to feedback that aligns with diverse learning styles, emotional responses, and educational needs.

Students' individual characteristics influence the effectiveness of instruction and learning and, therefore, the depth of learning. This study brings forth the voices of middle school students regarding their science learning preferences through four modalities: visual, auditory, sensorimotor, and agency support. We examined the relationship between the students' science learning preferences and three of their personal characteristics (gender, having or not having a learning disability, and level of scientific knowledge and skills). The study encompassed 305 students (166 girls) and applied a quantitative methodology employing two questionnaires: Scientific Knowledge and Skills and Learning Preferences. Analysis of variance and multiple regressions revealed that the participants favored all four learning modalities, with a significant preference for learning via visual and sensorimotor means. Girls significantly preferred learning preferences via visuals and agency support. A significant correlation was found between the level of preference for learning science via auditory means and the students' level of scientific knowledge and skills. Hierarchical regression analysis showed a significant positive contribution of gender and preference for learning science via auditory means but no contribution of having a learning disability to the students' level of scientific knowledge and skills. The study results show the importance of implementing multi-faceted instructional strategies to address students' diversity and learning preferences. Our findings underscore the need for educators and policymakers to be attentive to the students' voices when striving to narrow gaps, achieve equality among students, and elevate students' knowledge and skills in science studies.

The present large-scale quantitative study investigated the predictive effects of learning strategies and styles on Chinese undergraduate students' English achievement and their mediating effects on each other's relation to English achievement. A total of 439 students from different universities answered the 30-item Perceptual Learning Style Preference Questionnaire and 50-item Strategy Inventory for Language Learning as well as a background questionnaire. Analyses of the data revealed the following major findings: (a) Learning strategies were significantly positively related to learning styles, (b) both learning strategies and styles were significantly positively related to and predicted students' English achievement, and (c) learning strategies significantly mediated the relation between learning styles and English achievement. These findings clearly highlight the importance of learning strategies and styles in second/foreign language learning. Based on these findings, some implications are discussed.

Augmented Reality (AR) is believed a suitable teaching method for beginning-level Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL) learners in learning Chinese characters, as the effects of AR on visualization may enhance recognition of pictographic characters and the integration of multimedia may facilitate comprehension of this logographic language. Yet the multimodal presentation may trigger different reactions in learners with distinct learning preference, including visual, aural, reading/writing, and kinesthetic (VARK) sensory modalities. This exploratory study aimed to investigate the effects and impacts of learning Chinese characters using AR application on beginning-level CFL learners, and took the impact of learning styles into consideration. Twenty-eight beginning-level Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) learner participated in the study, learning 24 Chinese characters with an AR application that demonstrated animated evolutionary processes. A Chinese character recognition test was implemented to evaluate the learning effects in terms of meaning identification and pinyin transliteration before and after the AR intervention. A VARK questionnaire was used to assess their preferred learning styles, and to cross-examine with the learning effects. The results showed significant improvements in the posttest, in particular the identification of character meanings. However, no significant difference was found in the test scores of the four modes of the VARK learning styles, though the learners with multimodal preferences that included the visual learning style had better scores.

The movement of air into and out of the lungs is facilitated by changes in pressure within the thoracic cavity relative to atmospheric pressure, as well as the resistance encountered by airways. In this process, the movement of air into and out of the lungs is driven by pressure gradients established by changes in lung volume and intra-alveolar pressure. However, pressure never sucks! The concept that pressure never sucks, pressure only pushes encapsulates a fundamental principle in the behavior of gases. This concept challenges common misconceptions about pressure, shedding light on the dynamic forces that govern the movement of gases. In this Illumination, we explore the essence of this concept and its applications in pulmonary ventilation. Pressure is one of the most important concepts in physics and physiology. Atmospheric pressure at sea level is equal to 1 atmosphere or around 101,325 Pascal [Pa (1 Pa ¼ 1 N/m[superscript 2])]. This huge pressure is pushing down on everything all the time. However, this pressure is difficult to understand because we do not often observe the power of this incredible force. We used five readily available, simple, and inexpensive demonstrations to introduce the physics and power of pressure. This extraordinarily complex physics concept was approached in a straightforward and inexpensive manner while still providing an understanding of the fundamental concepts. These simple demonstrations introduced basic concepts and addressed common misconceptions about pressure.

Executive functions (EFs) in early childhood are predictors of later developmental outcomes and school readiness. Much of the research on EFs and their psychosocial correlates has been conducted in high-income, minority world countries, which represent a small and biased portion of children globally. The aim of this study is to examine EFs among children aged 3-5 years in two African countries, South Africa (SA) and The Gambia (GM), and to explore shared and distinct predictors of EFs in these settings. The SA sample (N = 243, 51.9% female) was recruited from low-income communities within the Cape Town Metropolitan area. In GM, participants (N = 171, 49.7% female) were recruited from the rural West Kiang region. EFs, working memory (WM), inhibitory control (IC) and cognitive flexibility (CF), were measured using tablet-based tasks. Associations between EF task performance and indicators of socioeconomic status (household assets, caregiver education) and family enrichment factors (enrichment activities, diversity of caregivers) were assessed. Participants in SA scored higher on all EF tasks, but children in both sites predominantly scored within the expected range for their age. There were no associations between EFs and household or familial variables in SA, except for a trend-level association between caregiver education and CF. Patterns were similar in GM, where there was a trend-level association between WM and enrichment activities but no other relationships. We challenge the postulation that children in low-income settings have poorer EFs, simply due to lower socioeconomic status, but highlight the need to identify predictors of EFs in diverse, global settings.

Summer learning loss is a perennial concern for educators and parents alike. However, researchers have recently questioned whether summer learning loss is just a statistical artifact driven by how achievement is measured across the school year. In this study, we empirically investigated a plausible critique of summer learning loss research, namely that students do not put forth their best effort on the fall test compared with the spring test. While we cannot conclude based on our findings that students do in fact lose ground during the summer, we did not find evidence that seasonal differences in test effort are a main driver of summer learning patterns estimated with MAP Growth assessments.

Aims: To determine the associations between COVID-19 school closures and school readiness skills for Chinese kindergarteners. Design: We utilized the natural experimental condition created by local COVID-19 outbreaks in 2022 (Study 1) to compare school readiness skills of children whose kindergartens were closed for 5 months (Group 1) with children whose kindergartens stayed open (Group 2). We further compared the school readiness skills of one pre-COVID-19 cohort (Cohort 2019) with one COVID-19 cohort (Cohort 2021) from a fifth kindergarten (Study 2). Samples: For Study 1, Group 1 included 445 children and Group 2 included 584 children aged 4-6 years. For Study 2, Cohort 2019 included 156 children and Cohort 2021 included 228 children aged 3-6 years. Measures: For both studies, survey data on four school readiness skills were collected from parents. Additionally, Study 1 collected parental locus of control data from parents. Results: Controlling for covariates, Study 1 revealed that Group 1 and Group 2 did not differ in terms of language and emergent literacy or approaches to learning. However, Group 1 scored lower than Group 2 on health and well-being and arts and imagination. Study 2 revealed that Cohort 2021 scored higher than Cohort 2019 on language and emergent literacy but lower on the other three skills. Conclusions: The associations of COVID-19 school closures with Chinese children's school readiness skills were not uniform, with a positive relation with language and emergent literacy and negative associations with health and well-being, approaches to learning, as well as arts and imagination.

One important line of inquiry in educational psychology involves the study of change of individuals' cognitive-motivational processes. The conjunctive use of longitudinal data with latent growth curve modeling procedures has, for example, allowed researchers to identify initial levels and to trace trajectories of theoretical variables such as self-efficacy over time. The study reported in this article proposed a conceptual model that depicted relations between a deep-learning approach, mastery goals and self-efficacy over time. A final sample of 195 second-year university students (100 females, 95 males) took part in this three-wave panel study. We used various inventories to test the initial states and rates of change of the three aforementioned constructs. As an a posteriori analysis, we included prior academic achievement as a possible predictor of change. The results ascertained from our analyses indicate an increase in growth of a deep-learning approach, mastery goals and self-efficacy across the two-year period. Importantly, a posteriori results accentuated the role of prior academic achievement as a predictor of the initial level of personal self-efficacy.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced a significant increase in the utilization of video-based e-learning platforms for programming education. These platforms never considered the essential attributes of student characteristics and learning preferences while designing such a problematic subject having high dropout and failure rates. The traditional e-learning environments deliver instructional videos to the learners by assuming all learners have a single learning preference. Moreover, existing learning style models need to address the recent requirements of e-learning paradigms. To address this issue, this paper presents a novel learning style model tailored for instructional video-based programming e-learning environments that map individual learning preferences with various video design patterns. An adaptive e-learning environment was employed to assess the effectiveness of the proposed model that leveraged a decision tree classifier to divide learners into four preferences. In a paired experimental design, 195 first-year undergraduate students were randomly assigned to one of three groups where learner scores and feedback were taken as evaluation metrics. The control group partook without instructional videos for the entire semester of six months. During the same period, experimental group-1 learned with a traditional video-based e-learning environment, and experimental group-2, with the proposed learning style model, enabled an adaptive e-learning environment. Based on the proposed decision tree learning model, it is understood that the intervention group showed significant improvements in knowledge acquisition, grade, and positive feedback compared to the other groups. Hence, the proposed model is highly recommended for traditional programming e-learning environments to deliver instructional videos based on learners' learning preferences.

Calvino's reflection on "quickness" brings the reader through a zig-zag journey without a predefined destination, crossing the history of literature in order to think about writing and the relationship between physical speed and speed of mind. To discuss quickness as a virtue, Calvino refers to the potentiality of human reasoning and typifies different styles of thought. Elaborating on "quickness" as a quality and a virtue in the contemporary societal and more particularly educational context which is conceptualized as "accelerated time" ("Rosa Social Acceleration: A New Theory of Modernity," 2013) and "network time" (Hassan "Time & Society" 12:226-241, 2003) might at first glance seem somewhat irrelevant. However, the pressing relevance of this virtue lies precisely in the digitized direction which school education is faced with. The shift towards digital school education bears the implication of decoupling the space and time of education from the here and now of the classroom. This, on the flip side means allowing global events as well as personal happenings of the teacher and students to enter the classroom, leading the lesson time to become a poly-synchronous time. That is against this contemporary background of digital education that this article attempts to relate to Calvino's understanding of quickness. The article embarks on characterizing four aspects of Calvino's reading of quickness and problematizes their manifestation in the current digital school education climate and finally, it seeks to open some concrete horizons for re-introducing quickness as a virtue for education in the digital age.

Language teachers cannot ignore the role of technology in young language learners' lives to engage and motivate them. Therefore, the current research investigated the mediating effect of students' learning and cognitive styles on the relationship between their emotions and situational motivation. 1089 respondents were selected from different colleges and universities, with different ages, genders, and levels. Four questionnaires (Cognitive Scale of the Human--Nature Relationship, Learners' Emotion Questionnaire, The Situational Motivation Scale, and Learning Style Questionnaire) were employed to collect the data. The researcher used Tencent QQ, a widely used communication platform in China, in conjunction with Wenjuanxing, an online survey tool, to distribute the questionnaire to all participants. The results showed that 54% of changes in students' situational motivation can be explained by interaction among their emotions, learning, and cognitive styles. In addition, it was revealed that less attention is paid to the mental and psychological aspects of students in technology-enhanced learning environments, and most educational environments do not have the necessary compatibility with the psychological characteristics of students. Implications are presented.

Drawing on a case study design, this article examines the real-life adaptive challenges secondary school teachers of English in Uganda face while implementing the 2020 English language competence-based curriculum innovation. Findings indicate that scarcity of instructional materials, time constraints and large class sizes, limited planning and stakeholders' support, dissonance between local culture and learning styles significantly underlie complications ESL teachers face adapting and implementing competence-based curricula innovations in English language classrooms in low-income contexts in the global south. The experiences of teachers in Uganda resonate across most global south ESL educational contexts. They illustrate the universality of challenges teachers face and are likely to face when implementing competence-based curricula in sub-Saharan Africa and the wider global south where the teaching and learning of English is premised on facilitating acquisition of English language for meaningful interaction.

Choice preferences for the compromise option are one common way to make decisions which has received a great deal of research attention to seek a richer understanding of consumers' product choices. Prior research has focused on investigating the various factors underlying the compromise choice. Given that the literature on cognitive style provides considerable evidence of how a holistic-analytic thinking style influences consumers' decision-making processes, this article applies an individual-differences perspective to examine the influence of consumers' situationally activated styles of thinking on their choice of compromise option. We conduct two separate experimental studies in Korea and in France, as representatives of holistic-and analytic-thinking culture, respectively, and identify whether priming consumers to think either holistically or analytically induces the shift in their thinking tendencies and consequently in their choice behavior. The results demonstrate a significant interaction between consumers' culture and the priming condition; French consumers have a greater tendency to select compromise option in holistic-prime condition, while Korean consumers have a lower tendency to select compromise option in analytic-prime condition. Contributing to literature not only on compromise choice, but also on priming effects of thinking style, the findings provide useful managerial insights into implementing effective global strategies for compromise-option product ranges.

The revised two-factor Study Process Questionnaire and the Approaches and Study Skills Inventory for Students are two instruments commonly used to measure student learning approach. Although they are designed to measure similar constructs, it is unclear whether the metrics they provide differ in terms of their real-world classification of learning approach. The purpose of this study is to compare outcomes of these two inventories in a study population from an undergraduate (baccalaureate) human anatomy course. The three central goals of this study are to compare the inventories in terms of 1) how students are classified, 2) the relationship between examination performance, time spent studying, and learning approach, and 3) instrument reliability. Results demonstrate that student classifications of corresponding scales of each inventory are significantly correlated, suggesting they measure similar constructs. Although the inventories had similar reliability, neither was consistently strong in predicting examination performance or study habits. Overall, these results suggest that the two inventories are comparable in terms of how they measure learning approach, but the lack of correspondence between learning approach scores and measurement outcomes questions their validity as tools that can be used universally in classrooms.

Self-regulated learning is a multifaceted process that involves cognitive, metacognitive, motivational, affective, and behavioural components. These components are interconnected and influenced by contextual factors that shape the overall learning experience. Self-regulated learning empowers students to take control of their learning by utilising effective learning techniques, engaging in metacognitive processes, and fostering motivation and self-efficacy beliefs. The goal of the article is to explore the importance of self-regulated learning in enhancing students' academic performance and fostering a deep understanding of the learning material. Specifically, this research article explores the utilisation of learning techniques and strategies (LTSs) among pedagogy students, investigating their patterns and preferences for self-studying. The analysis of survey responses from a sample of 76 pedagogy students revealed that the most commonly used LTSs are rereading, note-taking, memorising, and highlighting. The utilisation of LTSs that are empirically considered effective, such as distributed practice, practice testing, and elaborative interrogation, was found to be extremely low. Moreover, the study revealed a lack of comprehensive training in learning techniques and strategies in pedagogy programmes, suggesting that current teachers are not adequately trained to create optimal classroom contexts for developing flexible self-regulatory skills in students. The findings highlight that by incorporating these practices into curriculum, future educators can empower their students to become active learners who select the appropriate strategies and reflect on their learning process. This paper contributes to an understanding of self-regulated learning and the implications of self-regulated learning for educational practices.

Adaptive learning is a teaching approach aiming to personalize the learning experience for each student. In Computer Science Education (CSE), Adaptive Learning Systems (ALS) can provide students with customized lessons, exercises, and assessments based on their previous knowledge, strengths, and weaknesses. Some literature reviews focus on adaptive learning techniques, but none specifically analyze the methods used in adaptive systems in CSE. Our overall objective is to identify the computing techniques that are implemented within ALS to provide adaptive computer education in higher education. We conducted a scoping review (SR) based on the Guidelines for performing Systematic Literature Reviews in Software Engineering, defining six research questions and a search string. We performed searches in four databases, retrieving 512 documents. After applying the selection criteria, we selected 29 works. The results present quantitative and qualitative data from those 29 studies. Most research has used adaptive learning in programming education (12 articles) and databases (9 papers). Nine articles used learning styles as the core of adaptation, with the Felder-Silverman model being used by seven of them. The most commonly used approach was the rule-based system approach built by experts within the proposal, which was used in 17.24% of the articles. Clustering, collaborative filtering, fuzzy logic, and K-NN were used in 10.34% of the proposals. The positive aspect of "delivering adaptive content" was pointed out in seven articles. As for negative aspects, the problem of lack of student engagement was mentioned in four articles. This study discusses the application of dynamic and static models based on learning styles (LS) and the challenges involved in their use. Additionally, another aspect pointed out is that it is crucial to carefully consider pedagogical aspects in learning systems and have mixed development teams. The study also discusses student motivation and the use of gamification elements as a strategy to engage students in electronic learning systems. Finally, the results also indicate that the level of student knowledge is typically represented by a student model (SM), and the growing trend is the use of hybrid SMs. The research identified the most studied areas in ALS in CSE, such as computer programming and databases. The most common techniques used in ALS were rule-based systems built by experts, fuzzy logic, and clustering. The most common feature of ALS identified was learning resources, and the majority of studies focused on investigating the impact of system accuracy. This research can help researchers design better adaptive learning systems and understand challenges that need to be addressed.

There is already an abundant literature on the virtues of simulation in education. However, there is also a lack of assessment instruments to determine the impact of virtual simulation and virtual exchange on participants' self-realisation of learning in teacher education. The aim of this study is to identify the variables that best describe students' learning of current educational issues. A questionnaire consisting of Likert-type items was used as a metacognitive assessment tool to provide data for the study. An exploratory longitudinal study was conducted over three years. Data were collected using students' answers to the questionnaire. A convenience sampling procedure was used, with participating students enrolled in the Didactic Resources module of English as a Second Language (ESL) in an Official Master's Degree in Teacher Training in Compulsory Secondary Education and Baccalaureate, Vocational Training, and Language Teaching. The most strongly correlated variables that best explain the dependent variable ("I have gained deeper insights into current educational issues") addressed inclusion, special learning needs, service learning, and simulation through intercultural dialogue. Each of the variables significantly contributes to the estimation of perceived acquisition of insight into current educational issues through virtual simulation.

In this study, students' e-learning styles (ELS) and attitudes towards online learning were examined. Besides, it was also aimed to reveal the relationship between students' ELS and their attitudes towards online learning. Another of the main aims of the study is; the aim of this study is to explain the effect of university students' e-learning styles on their attitudes towards online learning. In the study designed with the relational survey model, the population consisted of 19.879 university students. The sample consisted of 727 students. "E-Learning Styles Scale", "Online Learning Attitude Scale," and "Student Information Form" were used as data collection tools. Parametric analysis techniques were applied because it was determined that the data met the prerequisites of parametric analysis after the validity and reliability studies. In the study, it was concluded that students' attitudes towards online learning were at a moderate level. It has been determined that there is a positive, significant, low-level relationship between the ELS of the students and their attitudes towards online learning. It was concluded that the ELS of the students affected their attitudes towards online learning positively and that the ELS of the students explained 8% of the level of their attitude towards online learning. In the study, some suggestions were presented in order to contribute to education stakeholders.

e-Learning was abruptly adopted in many countries to mitigate the adverse consequences of the sudden closure of institutions of higher learning caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Against this background, this study investigated how business undergraduates want to learn in the future and predictors of their future preferred mode of learning. 251 business undergraduates from a private university in Malaysia participated in an online survey conducted in July 2020, during the sudden closure of institutions of higher learning. Data collected were analysed using the multiple discriminant analysis to develop a characteristics profile of the three groups of business undergraduates (i.e., preferred fully conventional classroom learning, blended learning and fully e-learning) in terms of important predictors. Results revealed that the significant predictors of future preferred mode of learning of business undergraduates, in descending order, were disadvantages of e-learning, advantages of e-learning, self-regulated learning, learning outcomes, information and communications technology infrastructure and training, support and resources. This study concludes with some reflective thoughts about important lessons learned from this unprecedented pandemic pertaining to e-learning readiness to deal with future unexpected crises.

This study has three aims: (1) test the effectiveness of using an ebook based on the Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA) Task to empower critical explanatory ability; (2) examine the influence of problem-solving style differences on critical explanatory ability; and (3) assess the interaction between the use of CLA Task-based Ebooks and problem-solving styles on critical explanatory ability. This study used a quasi-experimental design and 4×3 factorial design. The instrument was an essay test and Problem Solving Style Questionnaire (PSSQ). ANCOVA was used for data analysis (p = 0.05). This study concludes that: (1) CLA Task-based ebooks are more effective at empowering critical explanatory capabilities than PowerPoint-based CLA Tasks and PowerPoint-based conventional media; (2) Students with the problem-solving Assimilator type have a higher critical explanatory ability value than Diverger, Converger, and Accommodator types; and (3) The interaction between students who use CLA Task-based Ebook media with the problem-solving style Assimilator type has a higher average value of critical explanatory ability than other combinations.

This study explored the relationship between mathematics performance and learning styles among Grade 8 students in the Philippines. The study used a descriptive correlation research design to achieve its objectives, which included determining the profile of Grade 8 students, identifying their learning styles, and examining the relationship between mathematics performance and age, gender, and learning styles. The data was collected through an adapted questionnaire from David Kolb's learning style inventory. The findings revealed no significant relationship between learning styles and academic performance in mathematics. However, it is worth noting that the lack of a significant relationship does not necessarily mean that there is no relationship at all. Motivation, teacher quality, and cultural background may also influence mathematics performance. The findings suggest that educators should consider students' different learning styles when developing effective teaching strategies to enhance mathematics performance among Grade 8 students. This study contributes to the literature on mathematics education and has practical implications for educators seeking to enhance their students' mathematics performance.
