Background: N-methyl-D-aspartate-receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis is a rare neurological autoimmune disease with severe neuropsychiatric symptoms during the acute phase. Despite good functional neurological recovery, most patients continue to experience cognitive, psychiatric, psychological, and social impairments years after the acute phase. However, the precise nature and evolving patterns over time of these long-term consequences remain unclear, and their implications for the well-being and quality of life of predominantly young patients have yet to be thoroughly examined. Methods: SAPIENCE is a European multi-center (n = 3) prospective observational cohort study studying the long-term cognitive, psychiatric, psychological, and social outcome in patients with NMDAR encephalitis. The study consists of three interconnected levels. Level 1 comprises a qualitative interview and focus groups with patients and their caregivers. Level 2 consists of a condensed form of the interview, standardized questionnaires, and a detailed neuropsychological examination of patients. Level 3 involves an online survey that will be open to patients world-wide and explores patient-reported outcomes (PROMs), and patient-reported experiences (PREMs) in association with clinical and cognitive outcomes. Levels 1 to 3 will progressively contribute developing of structured interviews, survey questions, and treatment guidelines by informing one another. Discussion: SAPIENCE is an in-depth study of the long-term effects of NMDAR encephalitis and bridges the gap between standardized assessments and individual patient experiences, intending to improve patient care and to increase awareness of the psychosocial long-term consequences of the disease. Through collaboration of experts in clinical neurology and social and health psychology across Europe, SAPIENCE aims to create online assessment tools and formulate guidelines for patient-centered post-acute care that will help enhance the quality of life for patients and caregivers. Synchronous Distance Learning (SDL) is becoming more and more popular in the academic environment, but comparisons of the effects of this type of learning with those of traditional face-to-face have often been limited to academic performance and satisfaction. The aim of this study is to compare the effects of these two learning modalities on cognitive outcomes (knowledge acquisition, cognitive engagement), affective outcomes (emotions, motivation) and behavioural outcomes (student-teacher interactions, spatial presence). For this, two binary logistic regression models were performed on data from 43 face-to-face and 44 SDL university students (Bordeaux, France) taking courses in cognitive science, neuroscience or ergotherapy. The levels of knowledge acquisition and student-teacher interactions were similar, with tendencies to be respectively superior in face-to-face and SDL modality. In face-to-face conditions, students showed higher levels of cognitive engagement, spatial presence and anxiety. In SDL condition, students showed higher levels of enjoyment, but also higher levels of shame. These results, their practical impact on teaching and directions for future work are discussed. Background: The use of music in cognitive interventions represents a possibility with potential worthy of further investigation in the field of aging, both in terms of prevention from dementia, in the phase of mild cognitive impairment, and in the treatment of overt dementia. Objectives: Currently, the types of music-based interventions proposed in the literature are characterized by wide heterogeneity, which is why it is necessary to clarify which interventions present more evidence of effectiveness in stimulating different cognitive domains. Method: The study was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines for scoping reviews. By searching two different databases, PubMed and the Web of Science, all studies evaluating the cognitive effects of music-based interventions on people at early stages of cognitive decline (MCI or mild-to-moderate dementia) were selected. Results: The study selection included a total of 28 studies involving n = 1612 participants (mean age ranged from 69.45 to 85.3 years old). Most of the studies analyzed agree with the observation of an improvement, or at least maintenance, of global cognitive conditions (mainly represented by the results of the MMSE test) following music-based interventions, together with a series of other positive effects on verbal fluency, memory, and executive processes. Conclusions: The results of this review suggest the introduction of music-based interventions as complementary approaches to usual cognitive treatments. Also, the use of standardized and well-defined protocols, in addition to strong methodological research approaches, is suggested. Background/Objectives: High cognitive reserve (CR) has been shown to have beneficial effects on global cognition, cognitive decline, and risk of dementia in Parkinson's disease (PD). We evaluated the influence of CR on the long-term cognitive outcomes of patients with PD who underwent subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS). Methods: Twenty-five patients with PD underwent neuropsychological screening using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) at baseline, 1 year, and 5 years after bilateral STN-DBS. CR was assessed using the Cognitive Reserve Index questionnaire. According to CR score, patients were assigned to two different groups (LowCR group ≤ 130, HighCR group > 130). Results: Our data showed that patients in the HighCR group obtained a better performance with the MoCA total score at long-term follow-up compared to those in the LowCR group ([mean ± SE] LowCR group: 21.4 ± 1.2 vs. HighCR group: 24.5 ± 1.3, p = 0.05). The cognitive profile of the HighCR group remained unchanged over time. Conversely, the LowCR group had worse global cognition 5 years after surgery (T0: 25.3 ± 0.6 vs. T2: 21.4 ± 1.2, p = 0.02). Cognitive decline was not associated with mood, demographics, or clinical variables. Conclusions: These preliminary findings suggest that higher CR may be protective in PD cognition after STN-DBS. Specifically, a high CR may help cope with long-term decline in the context of surgical treatment. Introduction: In the COGNitive in Focused UltraSound (COGNIFUS) study, we examined the 6-month cognitive outcomes of patients undergoing MRgFUS thalamotomy. This study endorsed the safety profile of the procedure in terms of cognitive functions that cannot be evaluated in real-time during the procedure unlike other aspects. The aim of the COGNIFUS Part 2 study was to investigate the cognitive trajectory of MRgFUS patients over a 1-year period, in order to confirm long-term safety and satisfaction. Methods: We prospectively evaluated the cognitive and neurobehavioral profile of patients with essential tremor (ET) or Parkinson's Disease (PD) related tremor undergoing MRgFUS thalamotomy at 1 year-follow-up following the treatment. Results: The sample consists of 50 patients (male 76%; mean age ± SD 69.0 ± 8.56; mean disease duration ± SD 12.13 ± 12.59; ET 28, PD 22 patients). A significant improvement was detected at the 1 year-follow-up assessment in anxiety and mood feelings (Hamilton Anxiety rating scale 5.66 ± 5.02 vs. 2.69 ± 3.76, p = <0.001; Beck depression Inventory II score 3.74 ± 3.80 vs. 1.80 ± 2.78, p = 0.001), memory domains (Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test, immediate recall 31.76 ± 7.60 vs. 35.38 ± 7.72, p = 0.001 and delayed recall scores 5.57 ± 2 0.75 vs. 6.41 ± 2.48), frontal functions (Frontal Assessment Battery score 14.24 ± 3.04 vs. 15.16 ± 2.74) and in quality of life (Quality of life in Essential Tremor Questionnaire 35.00 ± 12.08 vs. 9.03 ± 10.64, p = 0.001 and PD Questionnaire -8 7.86 ± 3.10 vs. 3.09 ± 2.29, p = 0.001). This study delves into the dynamic interplay between GeoGebra, a prominent interactive digital tool, and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) cognition, focusing on teachers. Anchored by the objective to unravel how GeoGebra influences conceptual understanding and visualisation, the research hypothesises that GeoGebra significantly influences cognitive outcomes in STEM cognition. Thus, aiming to assess the hypothesis that GeoGebra significantly influences cognitive outcomes, a Multi-Group Analysis (MGA) using Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) was employed. Data was collected through a survey designed to capture the experiences and interactions of 71 teachers with GeoGebra. The significant direct pathways (Analogical Comparison Principle (ACP) and Error and Misconceptions Reflection Principle (EMR) and between Mathematical and Computational Algorithms (MCA) and Analogical Comparison Principle (ACP)) established empirical evidence to the theory that GeoGebra can facilitate conceptual understanding as well as cognitive development. Additionally, the indirect pathways with no significant effects such as Mathematical Cognition (MAS) to ACP to EMR was indicative of the fact that influence of GeoGebra operates more through direct interactions with the software as opposed to through mediated learning processes. The conclusion is that influence of GeoGebra is not uniform across all contexts, indicative of the fact that factors such as geographical location play a critical role in shaping the software's effectiveness in enhancing STEM education. In sum, while GeoGebra is a potent interactive digital tool for enhancing STEM cognition, the results call for tailored strategies in integrating digital tools like GeoGebra, by considering the specific needs of different learning context, particularly paying attention to the contrast between urban and rural educational settings. Background: In recent years, new technologies have been applied in cerebral palsy. Among these, immersive virtual reality is one with promising motor and cognitive effects along with the reduced costs of its application. The level of immersion of the subject in the illusional world gives the feeling of being a real part of the virtual environment. This study aims to investigate the safety and the efficacy of immersive virtual reality in children affected by cerebral palsy. Methods: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, RehabData, and Web of Science were screened up to February 2023 to identify eligible clinical studies. Results: Out of 788, we included 15 studies involving CP patients. There was high heterogeneity in the outcomes considered, and the results showed non-inferiority to conventional therapy and initial additional benefits in comparison with conventional rehabilitation. Conclusions: Immersive virtual reality emerges as a pivotal technological tool in rehabilitation, seamlessly integrating with conventional therapy within CP rehabilitation programs. Adequate maternal nutrient intake of vitamin B12 is critical to fetal brain development and subsequent neurodevelopmental outcomes. We conducted a scoping review to map the current state of knowledge from human epidemiological studies on the associations between maternal vitamin B12 during pregnancy and children's brain, cognitive, language, and motor development to identify gaps in the literature and suggest directions for future research. PubMed and OVID MEDLINE were searched. Search terms were vitamin B12, prenatal or maternal, neurodevelopment or cognitive development or brain. Animal studies were excluded. In total, 148 publications were identified, of which 19 met our inclusion criteria: (1) maternal vitamin B12 assessed via a measure of status, dietary intake, supplementation, or deficiency; and (2) an outcome related to brain development or cognitive, language, or motor development in children less than 18 years of age was assessed. This scoping review suggests that evidence supporting a relationship between maternal vitamin B12 during pregnancy and children's neurodevelopmental outcomes is inconclusive. Further longitudinal research is needed to clarify the effects of maternal vitamin B12 supplementation, status, and intake on children's brain development and neurodevelopmental outcomes. Rationale: Among mechanically ventilated critically ill adults, the PILOT (Pragmatic Investigation of Optimal Oxygen Targets) trial demonstrated no difference in ventilator-free days among lower, intermediate, and higher oxygen-saturation targets. The effects on long-term cognition and related outcomes are unknown. Objectives: To compare the effects of lower (90% [range, 88–92%]), intermediate (94% [range, 92–96%]), and higher (98% [range, 96–100%]) oxygen-saturation targets on long-term outcomes. Methods: Twelve months after enrollment in the PILOT trial, blinded neuropsychological raters conducted assessments of cognition, disability, employment status, and quality of life. The primary outcome was global cognition as measured using the Telephone Montreal Cognitive Assessment. In a subset of patients, an expanded neuropsychological battery measured executive function, attention, immediate and delayed memory, verbal fluency, and abstraction. Measurements and Main Results: A total of 501 patients completed follow-up, including 142 in the lower, 186 in the intermediate, and 173 in the higher oxygen target groups. Median (interquartile range) peripheral oxygen saturation values in the lower, intermediate, and higher target groups were 94% (91–96%), 95% (93–97%), and 97% (95–99%), respectively. Telephone Montreal Cognitive Assessment score did not differ between lower and intermediate (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 1.36 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.92–2.00]), intermediate and higher (adjusted OR, 0.90 [95% CI, 0.62–1.29]), or higher and lower (adjusted OR, 1.22 [95% CI, 0.83–1.79]) target groups. There was also no difference in individual cognitive domains, disability, employment, or quality of life. Conclusions: Among mechanically ventilated critically ill adults who completed follow-up at 12 months, oxygen-saturation targets were not associated with cognition or related outcomes. Objective: This study examined the relationship between cognitive reserve measured with the Cognitive Reserve Index questionnaire (CRIq) and cognitive and functional outcomes in a chronic traumatic brain injury (TBI) cohort compared to a non-TBI cohort. The utility of the CRIq was compared to common proxies of cognitive reserve (premorbid IQ and years of education) in TBI and non-TBI cohorts. Method: Participants were 105 individuals with moderate-severe TBI (10–33 years post injury) and 91 participants without TBI. Cognitive outcome was examined across four cognitive factors; verbal memory, visual ability and memory, executive attention, and episodic memory. Functional outcome was measured using the Glasgow Outcome Scale Extended. The CRIq total score and three subscale scores (education, work, leisure) were examined. Results: In the TBI cohort, associations were identified between two CRIq subscales and cognitive factors (CRIq education and verbal memory; CRIq work and executive attention). There were no associations between CRIq leisure and cognitive outcomes, or between CRIq and functional outcome. Model selection statistics suggested premorbid IQ and years of education provided a better fit than the CRIq for the relationship between cognitive reserve with two cognitive factors and functional outcome, with neither model providing an improved fit for the remaining two cognitive factors. This finding was broadly consistent in the non-TBI cohort. Conclusion: Cognitive reserve contributes significantly to long-term clinical outcomes following moderate-severe TBI. The relationship between cognitive reserve and long-term cognitive and functional outcomes following TBI is best characterised with traditional proxies of cognitive reserve, mainly premorbid IQ, rather than the CRIq. Objective: This study uses the Wechsler intelligence and memory scales to characterize the cognitive function of patients with autoimmune encephalitis (AE) in the chronic stage of the disease. AE is a group of neuroinflammatory disorders, and cognitive impairment is a significant source of chronic morbidity in these patients. Methods: Fifty patients with an average disease duration of 3.2 years after diagnosis were prospectively recruited from four hospitals. They underwent a comprehensive cognitive examination using the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence (WASI-II), Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-IV) and Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS-IV). Summary statistics were computed, and single-sample and independent-samples t tests were used to compare the cohort to normative data. Results: The results revealed significantly reduced performances in perceptual reasoning, processing speed, and working memory among AE patients. Seropositive AE patients exhibited below-norm processing speed, while the seronegative group showed reduced working memory and processing speed. Delayed memory performance was significantly below expectations only in seronegative patients. Pattern analysis indicated that intact cognition was the most observed outcome after AE, but significant heterogeneity was observed among the impaired patients. Conclusions: The study identified deficits in perceptual reasoning, processing speed, and working memory among chronic AE patients. Pattern analysis highlighted positive long-term cognitive outcomes for many but varied outcomes for those with ongoing difficulties. Although severely cognitively impaired patients were not included, the findings apply to AE cohorts who attend outpatient clinical neuropsychology consultations emphasizing the need for thorough cognitive assessment. Despite decreases in mortality rate, the treatment of cognitive deficits following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) remains a serious challenge for clinicians and survivors alike. Deficits in executive function, language, and memory prevent more than half of survivors from returning to their previous level of work and put a tremendous amount of stress on the individual and their family. New therapies are needed for survivors of aSAH in order to improve cognitive outcomes and quality of life. The aim of this review is to discuss the prevalence and contributing factors of cognitive deficits following aSAH, as well as areas for therapeutic intervention. Due to the limited research on cognitive rehabilitative strategies for aSAH, a literature search of traumatic brain injury (TBI) was used to explore therapies with the potential to improve cognitive outcomes in aSAH. Across cognitive domains, existing rehabilitative and pharmacotherapeutic strategies for TBI show promise to be useful for survivors of aSAH. However, further study of these therapies in addition to consistent assessment of cognitive deficits are required to determine their efficacy in survivors of aSAH.

Data were collected through the Apathy Evaluation Scale (AES-C) and the Informant Questionnaire for Cognitive Decline in the Elderly (IQCODE). Bivariate analyses were conducted between the IQCODE total score and each of the demographic and clinical characteristics as well as apathy, while Baron and Kenny’s 4-step approach was used to examine the mediating effect of apathy on the association between age and post-stroke cognition.Participants were aged 64.3 years on average, with a mean IQCODE score of 97.6 (SD: 14.8) and a mean AES-C score of 41.3 (SD: 8.0). IQCODE scores were positively correlated with age (r = 0.32, p < 0.001) and apathy (r = 0.54, p < 0.001). Apathy contributed to 24% of the total effect of age on post-stroke cognition, exerting a significant mediating effect on the relationship between age and post-stroke cognition.Apathy may have a significant impact on the cognitive health of stroke survivors. Guided by the bright and dark side described in Self-Determination Theory, and following hierarchical and integrative conceptualisation of motivational climates, the primary objective of this research was to test the predictive relationships between pre-service teachers’ perceptions of educator-created (dis-)empowering climates and need-based and novelty-based experiences with their academic self-concept. Bearing in mind that the pre-service teachers’ academic self-concept might vary depending on the knowledge domain, a secondary objective was to test invariance in the predictive model across the four knowledge domains (i.e. STEM, social studies, language, and physical education). The convenience sample included 1,410 pre-service secondary teachers (40.30% men; Mage = 23.85; SDage = 5.13; domain: 23.2% STEM, 24.8% social studies, 30.5% language, and 21.4% physical education) who participated in this cross-sectional study. The results from the structural equation modelling showed positive relationships between an educator-created empowering climate and need and novelty satisfaction, and negative relationships with need and novelty frustration. A disempowering climate was positively associated with need and novelty frustration, and negatively related to novelty satisfaction. Need satisfaction and novelty satisfaction were positively associated with academic self-concept, while need frustration and novelty frustration were associated negatively. The paths were invariant across the knowledge domains of STEM, social studies, language, and physical education. The results show that, regardless of the knowledge domain, the educator-created motivational climate represents a differential social-contextual factor explaining the need-based and novelty-based experiences, and academic self-concept of pre-service teachers throughout their initial teacher education programme. In recent years, educational robotics has gained ground in educational policy around the world, and primary education is no exception. However, there has not yet been a thorough synthesis of methodologically appropriate empirical research on the effects of robotics upon cognitive performance among primary school students, which this paper attempted to do. Following literature screening, a total of eight studies published between 2018 and 2022 with a sample size of 567 children met inclusion criteria and were meta-analyzed. Resultantly, a medium aggregate effect size in favor of robotics experiments emerged (standardized mean difference of .641), which was significantly higher compared to non-robotics learning (p <.01). No betweenstudy heterogeneity was detected. Subgroup analysis revealed a slightly larger overall effect for interventions on first-to thirdgraders rather than those in grades 4-6. Additionally, the analysis indicates that in order to enhance cognitive abilities in primary students, robotics interventions should be no longer than four weeks and involve robot construction. Intrinsic brain tumors often occur within functional neural networks, leading to neurological impairment and disability of varying degrees. Advances in our understanding of tumor-network integration, human cognition and language processing, and multiparametric imaging, combined with refined intraoperative tumor resection techniques, have enhanced surgical management of intrinsic brain tumors within eloquent areas. However, cognitive symptoms impacting health-related quality of life, particularly processing speed, attention, concentration, working memory, and executive function, often persist after the postoperative recovery period and treatment. Multidisciplinary cognitive rehabilitation is the standard of care for addressing cognitive impairments in many neurological diseases. There is promising research to support the use of cognitive rehabilitation in adult brain tumor patients. In this review, we summarize the history and usefulness of postacute cognitive rehabilitation for adult brain tumor patients.

Background: In recent years, new technologies have been applied in cerebral palsy. Among these, immersive virtual reality is one with promising motor and cognitive effects along with the reduced costs of its application. The level of immersion of the subject in the illusional world gives the feeling of being a real part of the virtual environment. This study aims to investigate the safety and the efficacy of immersive virtual reality in children affected by cerebral palsy. Methods: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, RehabData, and Web of Science were screened up to February 2023 to identify eligible clinical studies. Results: Out of 788, we included 15 studies involving CP patients. There was high heterogeneity in the outcomes considered, and the results showed non-inferiority to conventional therapy and initial additional benefits in comparison with conventional rehabilitation. Conclusions: Immersive virtual reality emerges as a pivotal technological tool in rehabilitation, seamlessly integrating with conventional therapy within CP rehabilitation programs. Indeed, it not only enhances motivation but significantly increases children’s functional capacity and abilities.

Adequate maternal nutrient intake of vitamin B12 is critical to fetal brain development and subsequent neurodevelopmental outcomes. We conducted a scoping review to map the current state of knowledge from human epidemiological studies on the associations between maternal vitamin B12 during pregnancy and children’s brain, cognitive, language, and motor development to identify gaps in the literature and suggest directions for future research. PubMed and OVID MEDLINE were searched. Search terms were vitamin B12, prenatal or maternal, neurodevelopment or cognitive development or brain. Animal studies were excluded. In total, 148 publications were identified, of which 19 met our inclusion criteria: (1) maternal vitamin B12 assessed via a measure of status, dietary intake, supplementation, or deficiency; and (2) an outcome related to brain development or cognitive, language, or motor development in children less than 18 years of age was assessed. This scoping review suggests that evidence supporting a relationship between maternal vitamin B12 during pregnancy and children’s neurodevelopmental outcomes is inconclusive. Further longitudinal research is needed to clarify the effects of maternal vitamin B12 supplementation, status, and intake on children’s brain development and neurodevelopmental outcomes.

BackgroundNeurological and psychological symptoms are increasingly realized in the post-acute phase of COVID-19.PurposeTo examine and characterize cognitive and related psychosocial symptoms in adults (21-75 years) who tested positive for or were treated as positive for COVID-19.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, data collection included a cognitive testing battery (Trails B; Digit Symbol; Stroop; Immediate and Delayed Verbal Learning) and surveys (demographic/clinical history; self-reported cognitive functioning depressive symptoms, fatigue, anxiety, sleep disturbance, social role performance, and stress). Results were compared with published norms, rates of deficits (more than 1 standard deviation (SD) from the norm) were described, and correlations were explored.ResultsWe enrolled 52 participants (mean age 37.33 years; 78.85% female) who were, on average, 4 months post illness. The majority had a history of mild or moderate COVID-19 severity. Forty percent of participants demonstrated scores that were 1 SD or more below the population norm on one or more of the cognitive tests. A subset had greater anxiety (21.15%), depressive symptoms (23.07%), and sleep disturbance (19.23%) than population norms. Age differences were identified in Stroop, Digit Symbol, and Trails B scores by quartile (p < .01), with worse performance in those 28-33 years old.ConclusionsCognitive dysfunction and psychological symptoms may be present in the weeks or months after COVID-19 diagnosis, even in those with mild to moderate illness severity.Implications for practiceClinicians need to be aware and educate patients about the potential late/long-term cognitive and psychological effects of COVID-19, even in mild to moderate disease.

Methods We performed a literature search of the Ovid MEDLINE, PsychINFO and PsycTESTS databases from commencement until September 2021. Results In total, 9998 articles were identified by the search strategy; an additional 14 articles were identified through other sources. Of these, 35 randomised and nonrandomised studies were deemed to meet the inclusion/exclusion criteria of our review and were subsequently included for evaluation. A range of interventions were associated with positive effects on cognition, including pharmacological agents such as memantine, donepezil, methylphenidate, modafinil, ginkgo biloba and shenqi fuzheng, and nonpharmacological interventions such as general and cognitive rehabilitation, working memory training, Goal Management Training, aerobic exercise, virtual reality training combined with computer‐assisted cognitive rehabilitation, hyperbaric oxygen therapy and semantic strategy training. However, most identified studies had a number of methodological limitations and were judged to be at moderate‐to‐high risk of bias. In addition, it remains unclear whether and to what extent the identified interventions lead to durable cognitive benefits after cessation of the intervention. Conclusion The 35 studies identified in this systematic review have indicated potential cognitive benefits for a number of pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions in patients with brain tumours. Study limitations were identified and further studies should focus on improved study reporting, methods to reduce bias and minimise participant drop‐out and withdrawal where possible, and consider standardisation of methods and interventions across studies. Greater collaboration between centres could result in larger studies with standardised methods and outcome measures, and should be a focus of future research in the field.

Objective: Cognitive impairment is one of the most common symptoms of anti-leucine rich glioma inactivated 1 (anti-LGI-1) encephalitis, but little is known about the cognitive profile of these patients. This study characterized the cognitive profile of patients with anti-LGI-1 encephalitis and compared patterns of impairment to healthy controls and other patient groups with known temporal lobe/limbic involvement. Methods: A retrospective analysis of adult patients with anti-LGI-1 encephalitis who underwent neuropsychological assessment was conducted. Performance patterns of anti-LGI-1 patients were compared to patients deemed cognitively healthy (HC), as well as patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Results: Among 10 anti-LGI encephalitis patients (60% male, median age 67.5 years) who underwent neuropsychological testing (median = 38.5 months from symptom onset), cognitive deficits were common, with 100% of patients showing impairment (≤1.5 SD below mean) on 1+ measures and 80% on 2+ measures. Patients with anti-LGI-1 encephalitis performed worse than controls on measures of basic attention, vigilance, psychomotor speed, complex figure copy, and aspects of learning/memory. Of measures which differed from controls, there were no differences between the anti-LGI-1 and TLE patients, while the anti-LGI-1 patients exhibited higher rates of impairment in basic attention and lower rates of delayed verbal memory impairment compared to the aMCI patients. Conclusions: Long-term cognitive deficits are common in patients with anti-LGI-1 encephalitis and involve multiple domains. Future research in larger samples is needed to confirm these findings. Outcomes for patients with lower-grade gliomas (LrGGs) continue to improve with advances in molecular characterization and treatment. However, cognitive sequela from the tumor and its treatment leave a significant impact on health-related quality of life for these patients. Several factors affect each patient's cognition, such as tumor location, treatment, medication, and comorbidities. However, impairments of processing speed, attention, concentration, working memory, and executive function are common across LrGG patients. Cognitive rehabilitation strategies, well established in traumatic brain injury and stroke populations, are based on neural plasticity and functional reorganization. Adapting these strategies for implementation in patients with brain tumors is an active area of research. This article provides an overview of cognitive domains commonly impaired in LrGG patients and evidence for the use of cognitive rehabilitation strategies to address these impairments with the goal of improving health-related quality of life in this patient population.

Despite the abundance of research evaluating working memory training outcomes in children, few studies have examined the underlying cognitive mechanisms. This study aimed to contribute understanding by exploring whether working memory capacity (maximum span) and/or efficiency (basic and cognitive processing speeds), two proposed cognitive mechanisms, are associated with children’s working memory performance immediately and 6-months post-intervention. We used data from a previous trial in primary school children (7–11 years) who completed working memory training (n = 52) or an active control (n = 36), comprising 10 sessions (each 20-minutes) in class over two weeks. Children completed five working memory measures at baseline, immediately and 6-months post-intervention: two Backwards Span and two Following Instructions measures (same paradigms as training activities), and one n-back measure (different paradigm). Maximum span, basic and cognitive processing speeds, and performance were calculated for each measure. Associations between change in maximum span, processing speeds and change in performance on the working memory measures from baseline to immediately and 6-months post-intervention did not differ between groups (all p < .05). Maximum span, processing speeds and performance on working memory measures did not differ between groups. Findings provide little evidence that the studied capacity or efficiency processes contribute to understanding working memory training outcomes in primary school children. Furthermore, working memory training did not have benefits for children’s working capacity, efficiency or performance up to 6-months post-intervention. It is of interest for future studies to explore cognitive mechanisms, including strategy use, maximum span and information processing, in datasets where training effects are observed.

Purpose: Patients may experience Posterior Fossa Syndrome (PFS) also often referred to as Cerebellar Mutism Syndrome (CMS) following medulloblastoma resection. PFS/CMS is associated with delayed onset speech/language changes, motor impairments, and emotional lability. While initially considered a temporary condition, PFS/CMS symptoms impacting patients’ quality of life persist. Existing literature is limited by largely retrospective studies, with short follow-up, and exclusion of cognitive assessment during acute recovery. The current study reviews the history of patients with PFS/CMS acutely and throughout treatment who were matched on variables associated with poorer long-term cognitive functioning. Procedures: The Cognitive and Linguistic Scale (CALS) was used to evaluate two participants with PFS/CMS across the course of cancer-directed treatment. In addition, gold-standard measures of cognitive, academic, motor, language, and adaptive functioning were utilized following completion of treatment. Findings: Mutism duration varied between the two patients (Patient 1 = 88 days, Patient 2 = 28 days). The longer period of mutism was associated with lower CALS scores before radiation therapy, which persisted through pre-chemotherapy and end of treatment. The longer period of mutism and lower initial CALS score were associated with greater reading and math difficulties at the 1- and 2-years post-diagnosis evaluations, and were associated with significantly lower processing speed, visuomotor integration, and adaptive functioning at the 2-years post-diagnosis evaluation. Conclusions: Medulloblastoma survivors are at risk for cognitive late effects. Early assessment of cognitive skills during initial recovery from PFS/CMS (i.e., before mutism resolves) is feasible and may predict severity of PFS/CMS and long-term outcomes, thus providing earlier opportunity to guide caregiver education and advocate for support services.

Children and young adults with congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS) are at risk of cognitive deficits. They experience autonomic dysfunction and chemoreceptor insensitivity measured during ventilatory and orthostatic challenges, but relationships between these features are undefined. Can a biomarker be identified from physiologic responses to ventilatory and orthostatic challenges that is related to neurocognitive outcomes in CCHS? This retrospective study included 25 children and young adults with CCHS tested over an inpatient stay. Relationships between physiologic measurements during hypercarbic and hypoxic ventilatory challenges, hypoxic ventilatory challenges, and orthostatic challenges and neurocognitive outcomes (by Wechsler intelligence indexes) were examined. Independent variable inclusion was determined by significant associations in Pearson's analyses. Multivariate linear regressions were used to assess relationships between measured physiologic responses to challenges and neurocognitive scores. Significant relationships were identified between areas of fluid intelligence and measures of oxygen saturation (SpO 2) and heart rate (HR) during challenges. Specifically, perceptual reasoning was related to HR (adjusted regression [β] coefficient, –0.68; 95% CI, 1.24 to –0.12; P =.02) during orthostasis. Working memory was related to change in HR (β, –1.33; 95% CI, –2.61 to –0.05; P =.042) during the hypoxic ventilatory challenge. Processing speed was related to HR (β, –1.19; 95% CI, –1.93 to –0.46; P =.003) during orthostasis, to baseline SpO 2 (hypercarbic and hypoxic β, 8.57 [95% CI, 1.63-15.51]; hypoxic β, 8.37 [95% CI, 3.65-13.11]; P =.002 for both) during the ventilatory challenges, and to intrachallenge SpO 2 (β, 5.89; 95% CI, 0.71-11.07; P =.028) during the hypoxic ventilatory challenge. In children and young adults with CCHS, SpO 2 and HR—or change in HR—at rest and as a response to hypoxia and orthostasis are related to cognitive outcomes in domains of known risk, particularly fluid reasoning. These findings can guide additional research on the usefulness of these as biomarkers in understanding the impact of daily physical stressors on neurodevelopment in this high-risk group. Background: The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) represents the most recent severe pandemic resulting in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). COVID-19 can damage the central nervous system, requiring admission to intensive care units (ICU) and aggressive treatments (long-term ventilatory assistance and sedation) to stabilize vitals. Most post-COVID-19 patients experience cognitive impairments and mood or stress disorders. We aimed to study the frequency of cognitive deficits in COVID-19 survivors, the relationship between clinical factors in the acute phase and cognitive outcomes, affective states, and quality of life. We explored cognitive reserve (CR) role, as a post-COVID-19 resilience factor. Methods: Twenty-nine COVID-19 inpatients were assessed using a neuropsychological battery, mood scales, quality of life, and social integration questionnaires. Twenty-five were retained through telephone follow-up to monitor cognitive sequelae, affective states, and reintegration levels roughly 8 months after hospital discharge. We administered the Cognitive Reserve Index questionnaire. Results: We found most patients display no cognitive deficits. When they did, multi‐domain impairment occurred most frequently, especially involving executive functions. Results revealed a significant correlation between depression levels and the interval between ICU admission and tracheal tube removal. We found increased levels of depression and anxiety at follow-up, a significant relationship between resuming daily life activities, high CR, and executive functions. Conclusions: These findings suggest the importance of psychological support in the long term and the modulating role of cognitive reserve in quality of life after infection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study is to evaluate venous vascular structure and distribution as prognostic indicators of developmental outcomes for infants with neonatal hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) by detecting and analysing ridges representing vessels on susceptibility-weighted magnetic resonance images (SWIs). Forty-two infants with neonatal HIE underwent SWI in the neonatal period and neurodevelopmental assessment at age 2 years. Normalised histograms of the width, intensity, length and Hessian eigenvalues extracted from the ridge analysis of each patient's SWI are applied as feature vectors to feed into supervised classifiers such as the kNN and random forest (RF) classifiers to predict their neurodevelopmental outcomes. Here we also propose a supervised classifier for automatic prognosis of automated detection of SWI signs of HIE. Our classifier proposed in this paper demonstrates a superior performance in HIE prognosis for the datasets associated with cognitive and motor outcomes and it also enables to determination of brain regions which have been affected by hypoxia-ischaemia by extracting appropriate features from SWI images. The feature vectors containing width, intensity, length, and eigenvalue show a promising classification accuracy of 78.67% ± 2.58Linear regression, polynomial regression, and support vector regression (SVR) models predicted outcomes and the lower mean relative errors (MRE) for motor and cognitive outcomes are 0.088 ± 0.073 and 0.101 ± 0.11 respectively. The features derived from the vascular ridges improve the prognostic value of SWI in HIE. Our findings suggest that it is possible to predict neurological, motor, and cognitive outcomes by numerical analysis of neonatal SW images and to identify brain regions on SWI affected by hypoxia-ischaemia. Previous research into multimedia learning has mainly focused on cognitive factors to investigate different instructional conditions and design principles. Emotional aspects have so far been widely neglected. This study investigates how the cheerful emotional interface design influenced learners’ cognitive processes, emotional valences, learning outcomes, and subjective experience. This study used the PRISMA statement to identify the major themes from the literature. Following the strict inclusion and exclusion criteria for selecting records, we identified 47 articles for the analysis. This study used the VOS viewer for the themes using the content analysis and key term occurrences. The result shows two significant pieces, cognitive outcomes and affective outcomes, further divided into cognitive processes, emotional valences, learning outcomes, and subjective experience. In addition, the findings showed that learners using the cheerful emotional design had more positive emotions and higher comprehension and transfer test scores. Furthermore, learners who received the cheerful emotional design saw the materials as less challenging and expended more mental effort digesting them than learners who received the neutral design. Abstract Background Sufficient sleep is important to an individual’s health and well-being, but also for school achievement among adolescents. This study investigates the associations between sleepiness, sleep deficits, and school achievements among adolescents. Methods This trend study involved a representative sample of Norwegian adolescents based on the “Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study” (TIMSS), N = 4499 (2015) and N = 4685 (2019) and their teachers. The students were 9th graders from a Norwegian compulsory secondary school. The survey included questions on students’ sleepiness as students reported in 2019 and sleep deficits among students that limited teaching in class as their teachers reported in 2015 and 2019. Regression, triangulation, and mediation analyses were used. Mplus was used to perform the statistical analyses. Results The results revealed significant negative associations between sleep deficits and school achievements, adjusted for gender, socioeconomic status (SES), and minority status among Norwegian 9th graders. These results were found for both mathematics and science achievements in 2015 and 2019. Sleepiness that the students reported was negatively associated with school achievements in 2019. Trend and mediation analyses showed that sleep deficits explained 18 and 11% of the decrease in mathematics and science achievements, respectively, from 2015 to 2019. Conclusions Sleep deficits were associated with school achievements in mathematics and science among Norwegian 9th graders. Mediation analyses revealed that sleep deficits explained a significant part of the decline in academic achievements. Insufficient sleep may have negative public health implications and influence adolescents’ academic achievements and competences, and should therefore be discussed in both the educational and health systems.

There are limited data regarding detailed long-term outcomes. This study aims to describe the long-term neuropsychological outcomes in a series of pediatric patients with FIRES. Methods: This is a retrospective multi-center case series of pediatric patients with a diagnosis of FIRES treated acutely with anakinra who had neuropsychological testing at least 12 months after status epilepticus onset. Each patient underwent comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation as part of routine clinical care. Additional data collection included the acute seizure presentation, medication exposures, and outcomes. Results: There were six patients identified with a median age of 11.08 years (IQR: 8.19-11.23) at status epilepticus onset. Anakinra initiation was amedian of 11 days (IQR: 9.25-13.50) after hospital admission. All patients had ongoing seizures and none of the patients returned to baseline cognitive function with a median follow-up of 40 months (IQR 35-51). Of the five patients with serial full-scale IQ testing, three demonstrated a decline in scores over time. Testing results revealed a diffuse pattern of deficits across domains and all patients required special education and/or accommodations for academic learning. Conclusions: Despite treatment with anakinra, neuropsychological outcomes in this series of pediatric patients with FIRES demonstrated ongoing diffuse neurocognitive impairment. Future research will need to explore the predictors of long-term neurocognitive outcomes in patients with FIRES and to evaluate if acute treatment interventions improve these outcomes. There is increasing use of business analytics (BA) systems in industry to support decision making and process improvement. BA systems provide specialized functions for data collection, cleaning, analysis, query, and reporting. The need for BA skills in the workplace is driving the growth of graduate and undergraduate programs. However, such curriculum presents pedagogical challenges due to the interdisciplinary nature of enterprise BA work and the demand for a broader range of skills by the industry. BA courses need to go beyond emphasizing tool procedural skills and quantitative statistical knowledge. Project based learning (PBL) refers to pedagogy that engages students in educational content that is based on standards and practical business use cases and supports building higher level competencies such as problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and innovation. Incorporating PBL in a BA course allows students to experience real world BA projects by working with business end-users. This study collects interview data from the students and participating business users and explores how PBL leverages real-world situational conditions, and group interactions to increase higher level cognitive learning outcomes. Background: To examine whether the patterns of head-size growth trajectory in the first month after birth are associated with different susceptibility to cognitive impairment outcomes at age 24 months. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 590 infants of very-preterm survivors born between 2001 and 2016 receiving neurodevelopmental assessment at age 24 months. 403 children were enrolled for analysis after excluding infants with small-for-gestational age and severe brain injury. The head circumference (HC) growth evaluated weekly in the first month after birth compared to the at-birth HC was analyzed using group-based trajectory modeling. Neurocognition outcomes were determined as normal, borderline delay, or impaired using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development. As a neglected group, the number of return migrant children is growing with China's monumental volume of labor migration. Using data from 2013 to 2014 China Education Panel Survey, this study examines heterogeneous effects of return migration on children's mental health and cognitive outcomes. Our results show that the effects of return migration on children vary with the propensity for return migration. More importantly, when children are at risk of return migration, even if that risk is small, it already has a negative impact on children's mental health, which reminds us that it needs to take a dynamic view to study the impact of return migration on children. However, the impact of return migration is not all negative, and the findings suggest that return migration can promote the cognitive development of urban-origin migrant children. A striking regional difference emerges from our analysis: due to urban-rural gap, the impact of return migration on children from urban and rural areas is different. Specifically, return migration has a positive effect on the cognitive development of urban-origin migrant children while return migration does some harm to that of rural-origin migrant children, which implies that return migration may widen the gap between urban and rural children. Background: Sufficient sleep is important to an individual's health and well-being, but also for school achievement among adolescents. This study investigates the associations between sleepiness, sleep deficits, and school achievements among adolescents.Methods: This trend study involved a representative sample of Norwegian adolescents based on the "Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study" (TIMSS), N = 4499 (2015) and N = 4685 (2019) and their teachers. The students were 9th graders from a Norwegian compulsory secondary school. The survey included questions on students' sleepiness as students reported in 2019 and sleep deficits among students that limited teaching in class as their teachers reported in 2015 and 2019. Regression, triangulation, and mediation analyses were used. Mplus was used to perform the statistical analyses.Results: The results revealed significant negative associations between sleep deficits and school achievements, adjusted for gender, socioeconomic status (SES), and minority status among Norwegian 9th graders. These results were found for both mathematics and science achievements in 2015 and 2019. Sleepiness that the students reported was negatively associated with school achievements in 2019. Trend and mediation analyses showed that sleep deficits explained 18 and 11% of the decrease in mathematics and science achievements, respectively, from 2015 to 2019.Conclusions: Sleep deficits were associated with school achievements in mathematics and science among Norwegian 9th graders. Mediation analyses revealed that sleep deficits explained a significant part of the decline in academic achievements. Insufficient sleep may have negative public health implications and influence adolescents' academic achievements and competences, and should therefore be discussed in both the educational and health systems. Racial/ethnic disparities in academic performance may result from a confluence of adverse exposures that arise from structural racism and accrue to specific subpopulations. This study investigates childhood lead exposure, racial residential segregation, and early educational outcomes. Geocoded North Carolina birth data is linked to blood lead surveillance data and fourth-grade standardized test scores (n = 25,699). We constructed a census tract-level measure of racial isolation (RI) of the non-Hispanic Black (NHB) population. We fit generalized additive models of reading and mathematics test scores regressed on individual-level blood lead level (BLL) and neighborhood RI of NHB (RINHB). Models included an interaction term between BLL and RINHB. BLL and RINHB were associated with lower reading scores; among NHB children, an interaction was observed between BLL and RINHB. Reading scores for NHB children with BLLs of 1 to 3 µg/dL were similar across the range of RINHB values. For NHB children with BLLs of 4 µg/dL, reading scores were similar to those of NHB children with BLLs of 1 to 3 µg/dL at lower RINHB values (less racial isolation/segregation). At higher RINHB levels (greater racial isolation/segregation), children with BLLs of 4 µg/dL had lower reading scores than children with BLLs of 1 to 3 µg/dL. This pattern becomes more marked at higher BLLs. Higher BLL was associated with lower mathematics test scores among NHB and non-Hispanic White (NHW) children, but there was no evidence of an interaction. Background and purpose: Despite the rapid increase in research examining outcomes in autoimmune encephalitis (AE) patients, there are few cohort studies examining cognitive outcomes in this population. The current study aimed to characterise psychometric outcomes in this population, and explore variables that may predict psychometric outcomes. Methods: This retrospective observational study collected psychometric data from 59 patients across six secondary and tertiary referral centres in metropolitan hospitals in Victoria, Australia between January 2008 and July 2019. Frequency and pattern analysis were employed to define and characterize psychometric outcomes. Univariable logistic regression was performed to examine predictors of intact and pathological psychometric outcomes. Results: Deficits in psychometric markers of executive dysfunction were the most common finding in this cohort, followed by deficits on tasks sensitive to memory. A total of 54.2% of patients were classified as having psychometric impairments across at least two cognitive domains. Twenty‐nine patterns were observed, suggesting outcomes in AE are complex. None of the demographic data, clinical features or auxiliary examination variables were predictors of psychometric outcome. Conclusions: Cognitive outcomes in AE are complex. Further detailed and standardized cognitive testing, in combination with magnetic resonance imaging volumetrics and serum/cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers, is required to provide rigorous assessments of disease outcomes. Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the cognitive and emotional-behavioural outcomes of Turkish children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) in comparison with healthy peers, to determine its relationship with motor functions, and to analyse the difference of cognitive and emotional-behavioural outcomes according to the site of mutations., Method: Children aged 7-16 years with DMD (n = 68) and age-matched typically developing children (n = 33) were included in the study. The cognitive and emotional-behavioural status and the motor functions were assessed in detail. Children with DMD also divided into two groups as "proximal" and "distal" site mutation groups to compare the cognitive and emotional-behavioural outcomes., Results: The children with DMD and typically developing children were similar in terms of age and body mass index (p > 0.05). Significant differences were found between children with DMD and typically developing peers in almost all subtests of both cognitive and emotional-behavioural assessments (p < 0.05). Cognitive and emotional-behavioural parameters were weakly correlated with specific motor parameters responsive to cognitive functioning (p < 0.05). Pornography consumption is commonplace amongst adolescents In the United States and other countries. Curiosity exists about the role consumption (both type and frequency) potentially plays in cognitive, psychological, and behavioral outcomes for this population. Theories such as symbolic interactionism assist in our understanding of how meaning relates to these outcomes. The current article includes existing literature and established constructs derived from symbolic interactionist theory along with gender as a moderator. Collectively, this information serves as a basis for the proposed midrange model exploring adolescent pornography consumption and varying associated positive and negative outcomes. Infants and toddlers spend a substantial amount of their time in out-of-home care, and are thus being tended to not only by their mothers but also by their caregivers. It is therefore of considerable importance to study the effects of caregiver-infant compared to mother-infant interactions. To address this issue, first, various variables of caregiver-infant and mother-infant interaction were assessed in a group of participants at approximately 2 years of age. Then, 9 years later, their cognitive, social and emotional functions were evaluated. A substantially larger range of child outcome measures was found to be associated with the quality of caregiver-infant interactions compared to the quality of mother-infant interactions. Concomitantly, the level of parental education was found to be a prominent cofactor in exhibiting strong correlations with child outcome measures.
