The butterfly pea flower (Clitoria ternatea) is a plant species that is commonly used in culinary products, as it adds a natural purplish-blue tint to dishes without artificial food colourings and is rich in antioxidants. In this study, glycerol was employed as an extraction solvent for the extraction of phenolic compounds from C. ternatea. Several studies have proven glycerol is an ideal green solvent to replace conventional solvents such as ethanol and methanol due to its ability to change the water polarity, thereby improving the extraction of bioactive compounds and recovering the polyphenols from natural products. We systematically reviewed the phytochemical content and antioxidant properties of aqueous, ethanol and methanol extracts of C. ternatea as a comparison to our study. Our results show that glycerol extract (GE) and glycerol/water extract (GWE) have demonstrated high phenolic and flavonoid profiles as compared to ethanol extract (EE) and water extract (WE). This study suggests glycerol as a promising extraction medium to extract higher concentrations of phytochemical contents from C. ternatea. It could be used as a natural source of antioxidant boosters, particularly in food preparation and cosmeceutical product development.

This study identified the quality, physicochemical properties, and oxidation stability of tengkawang butter (TB) from indigenous plants in various areas of Kalimantan, Indonesia. The fatty acid profile was dominated by palmitic acid, stearic acid, and oleic acid. Acidity ranged from 6.88 to 15.94%, while the peroxide number was 0.41 and 8.27 meq O2/kg. TB had a melting point of 36–37°C. The solid fat content (SFC) varied from 0.03 to 3%. The Oxidation Stability Index (OSI22) was more than 10,000 h. The composition and properties show the potential of TB to become a cocoa butter equivalent (CBE).

Precipitate in B20 fuel stored in storage tanks can accumulate at the bottom level of the tank and affect the fuel filter, clogging in the fuel distribution and engine system. This study examines the precipitate formation prediction in B20 fuel based on the monoglyceride content in biodiesel. This research used a modified CSFT method of ASTM D7501 for the precipitation test. Monopalmitin was added to biodiesel with a variation of monoglyceride content. Each biodiesel sample was then blended with petroleum diesel fuel to produce two groups of samples. Each sample was separately soaked in the cooling chamber at constant and room temperature for 21 days. The bottom layer of each B20 fuel sample stored in the measuring cylinder was then pipetted and filtered, washed with petro-ether, vacuum-dried, and weighed for a constant amount of precipitate retained on the filter. The simulation results show that the ratios between the amount of collected precipitate at the bottom layer of the 2-liter measuring cylinder and the total amount of collected precipitate for the 2-liter measuring cylinder increased with the monoglyceride content biodiesel. This ratio was used to predict the amount of accumulated sludge for a given volume of B20 fuel loaded into the storage tank. This study shows the effect of monoglyceride content on the precipitation behaviour in the storage tank concerning general tank storage dimension parameters and B20 loading frequency. This approach can be applied to estimate the sludge removal frequency for biodiesel storage.

Redox mediators supply an effective way to promote electrons (and protons) transport between the electrode and substrate without being in direct physical contact with the electrode. Here, the carbon-based electrodes with Amberlyst-15 as the redox mediator were used in the electrocatalytic reduction to investigate their ability to indirectly convert glycerol into 1,2-propanediol. The process aims to study the influence of different activated carbon compositions (60%, 70%, 80%, and 90% of total weight) in the activated carbon composite (ACC) electrodes on the electrochemical properties, reaction mechanisms, and selectivity of the yielded products. Their electrochemical behavior and physicochemical properties were determined by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA), followed by FESEM-EDX for the selected ACC electrode. Electroactive surface area (EASA) plays a role in glycerol mass transport and electrons transfer. EASA of 60ACC, 70ACC, 80ACC, and 90ACC (geometrical surface area of 0.50 cm2) were 19.62, 24.50, 36.74 and 30.83 cm2, respectively. With the highest EASA, 80ACC enhanced the mass transport and electrons transfer process that eventually improved its electrocatalytic activity. It outperformed other ACC electrodes by generating Amberlyst-15 radicals (A-15•-) with high current density at low potential (−0.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl). A-15•- served as the electron-donor for the homogeneous redox reaction with glycerol in delivering highly reactive glycerol radical for further intermediates development and generated 1,2-propanediol at −2.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl (current density of −0.2018 A cm−2). High activated carbon content portrayed a dominant role in controlling EASA and favored consecutive acetol-1,2-propanediol production through the C–O bond breakage. From the galvanostatic electrolysis, 1,2-propanediol selectivity was higher on 80ACC (88.6%) compared to 60ACC (61.4%), 70ACC (70.4%) and 90ACC (72.5%). 1,2-propanediol was selectively produced by electroreduction of glycerol in a two-compartment reactor. Two new kinds of cathode electrodes were evaluated: (i) mixed carbon black-activated carbon electrodes and (ii) mixed carbon black-diamond electrodes. These electrodes were compared with a conventional platinum electrode. With a reaction temperature of 80°C, an electric current of 2.0 A, and ambient pressure, the mixed carbon black-activated carbon electrode demonstrated excellent performance and successfully reduced glycerol to 1,2-propanediol with a high selectivity of 86% and 74% glycerol conversion. The selectivity of 1,2-propanediol on the mixed carbon black-diamond electrode and the platinum electrode was 68% and 61%, respectively, with 88% glycerol conversion on the mixed carbon black-diamond electrode and 67% glycerol conversion on the platinum electrode. The authors propose a possible reaction mechanism for the formation of 1,2-PDO.

A laminar-flow tubular crystallizer was used for seedless continuous flow crystallization of an active pharmaceutical ingredient, namely, Brivaracetam, which has a polymorphic behavior: rod-shaped crystals and a pseudo-polymorphic solvated, needle-like crystal. The combination of fast cooling at 20 °C/s and high supersaturation values between 4 and 11 resulted in the discrimination of nucleation and growth of only the desired crystalline form even though its solubility curve is very close to the one of the undesired needle shape. Crystal nucleation and the start of crystal growth occur inside the tubular crystallizer; high flow rates prevent clogging of the crystallizer. Further crystal growth may be, if desired, stopped via immediate filtration. In this way, an industrially applicable continuous crystallizer is proposed. It is also demonstrated that the presence of restrictions in the tubing drastically increases the nucleation rate. The development of a continuous flow antisolvent crystallization protocol for a commercial active pharmaceutical ingredient, Brivaracetam, is described. To obtain increased nucleation kinetics of the desired crystalline form, solutions of Brivaracetam/isopropyl acetate are injected into micrometric tubing and mixed with a refrigerated antisolvent hexane. In this way very high supersaturation conditions are induced shortly after mixing. Residence times below 1 s after mixing in short tubular crystallizers are necessary for the desired, but thermodynamically unstable, crystals to grow. Arresting all crystal growth by immediate removal of the antisolvent containing mother liquors by continuous filtration or by casting the product onto filter paper prevents the formation of the thermodynamically stable pseudopolymorph - undesired due to its needle shape and solvated nature.
