International audience; Structural studies of three representative objects in eastern Mongolia outline different deformation modes that operated during the late Mesozoic large-scale extensional event in northeastern Asia: (1) ductile crust exhumation through metamorphic core complex formation, (2) emplacement of syn-thinning granitic intrusions in the middleupper crust, and (3) horst and graben system development in uppermost parts of the crust. Recent 40Ar/39Ar and U-Pb geochronological data suggest that extension started at least at ca. 138 Ma. Numerous models have interpreted the late Mesozoic extension in northeastern Asia in terms of gravitational collapse of a previously tectonically thickened lithosphere. The main feature that may suggest pre-extensional crustal thickening in the region is the Mongol-Okhotsk suture zone that extends from central Mongolia to the Sea of Okhotsk in Far East Russia and that was interpreted as the trace of an oceanic domain closed at the Jurassic-Cretaceous transition. However, no field evidence of crustal thickening is observed and documented throughout eastern Mongolia. Moreover, horst and graben structures, together with the occurrence of extensional deformations both north and south of the Mongol- Okhotsk suture zone argue against interpretations in terms of post-thickening collapse. On the other hand, the onset of late Mesozoic extension in northeastern Asia may be discussed in the light of the closure of the Mongol-Okhotsk ocean and of major changes in kinematics of the paleo-Pacific domain, in particular a change in the subduction direction of the Izanagi oceanic plate from quasi orthogonal to the eastern Asia margin to strongly oblique, around 155-140 Ma. These major kinematic changes might have increased the sinistral wrenching components with respect to thrusting ones along the subduction zone, a feature that might have favoured slab roll-back.We propose that late Mesozoic extension in northeastern Asia might result from a drop in compressive stresses at the boundary of a hot continental lithosphere.

International audience; New paleomagnetic data from Permian red beds and Middle Jurassic limestones from the Tarim Basin pose a paradox. Their declinations are similar to Upper Carboniferous to Neogene rocks collected from the same sections, and their inclinations parallel present values. When assuming that lower than expected inclinations in continental sedimentary rocks arise from inclination shallowing effects, then the paleolatitudes of all Upper Carboniferous to Present rocks from Tarim are indistinguishable. Local vertical axis block rotations occurring in the last 20 million years explain why declinations vary at different localities in the basin. Our Middle Jurassic data positions Tarim 23.6 ± 8.4° farther south than that predicted from the coeval reference pole for Eurasia; however, no geologic argument exists to support the closure of a large ocean basin between Tarim and Siberia since the Middle Jurassic. Thus the paradox: are the rocks from Tarim totally overprinted, or is the middle Mesozoic part of the reference Eurasian apparent polar wander path erroneous? Several lines of evidence suggest the Tarim rocks are not remagnetized. We conclude that Tarim has experienced little or no apparent polar wander since the Carboniferous. Moreover, our Middle Mesozoic reconstruction of Eurasia using the new Middle Jurassic pole from Tarim results in a more geologically compatible solution for the eastern Asian blocks over previous reconstructions.

International audience; The primary purpose of this paper is to investigate the spreading and production rates of oceanic ridges for the last 180 Myr, based on the detailed analysis of eight oceanic units (North, Central, and South Atlantic basins, Southwest, Central, and Southeast Indian Ridge systems, Somalia basin, and the Pacific plate) and using the most recent timescale for oceanic isochrons. The global study of oceanic ridges presented here shows that (1) the average rate of spreading, which we computed by weighting the rates obtained at each basin by the relevant ridge lengths, is constant since ~125 Ma at 53.4 ± 5.9 mm yr−1 (full rate), (2) the average surface production rate is 2.7 ± 0.2 km2 yr−1, and (3) the minimum oceanic crust production in volume, or flux, is 18.7 ± 2.9 km3 yr−1. These estimations are in close agreement (within ±10%) with other studies. However, the new results emerging from this analysis are the following: (1) The Cretaceous flux rates (in volume) might be only 10% higher than today over a short period of time (125–100 Myr). (2) The “pulse” of ocean crustal production (120–80 Ma) in the world total is predominantly the result of contributions from mantle temperature and oceanic plateaus but is not linked to the global spreading rate of oceanic ridges, as generally accepted. (3) The rates presented here differ from previously published models for the Cenozoic and show a general increasing trend in the last 50 Myr. (4) We finally suggest a possible ~25 Myr pseudo-periodicity of the oceanic production rate (in surface and in volume) at least during the last 75–80 Myr. These data could have a profound impact on a vast number of models including sea-level changes and more generally on the chemical mass balance between ocean and continent, which is known to be a key parameter in the history of the Earth's climate and ocean chemistry.

In order to better understand the tectonic evolution of central Asia under the influence of the India-Asia collision, we carried out a paleomagnetic study of 1500 cores from 106 sites along the Altyn Tagh fault, in the Qaidam and Tarim basins, and on the Tibetan plateau. Samples were mainly collected from Jurassic to Neogene siltstones and sandstones. In most cases stepwise thermal demagnetization unblocks low and high temperature components carried by magnetite and hematite. Low temperature components are north and down directed and lie close to the recent geomagnetic field. High temperature components from 10 of 13 age/locality groups pass fold and/or reversal tests and likely represent primary remanent magnetizations. The ten overall mean directions display a complex pattern of vertical-axis block rotations that are compatible with a tectonic model of clockwise rotation of the Qaidam Basin and concomitant left-lateral slip on the Altyn Tagh fault. Two of the ten localities are rotated significantly counterclockwise; they lie adjacent to the Altyn Tagh fault zone, consistent with the idea that left-lateral strike-slip motion occurred along it. The age of counterclockwise rotation near the eastern extremity of the fault was dated as younger than 19 Ma. Three widely spread areas within the Qaidam Basin exhibit similar and significant clockwise rotations, on the order of 20°, with respect to the North China Block, Tarim and Eurasia. The mean of the three values is thought to represent the total rotation of Qaidam. Because the youngest rocks displaying clockwise rotations are Oligocene, the main phase of Qaidam Basin rotation, and hence shear on the Altyn Tagh fault, took place after or near the end of the Oligocene (∼24 Ma). Upper Neogene strata located on the Qaidam Basin are not significantly rotated, thus tectonic deformation acting since the Upper Neogene (∼5 Ma) is not resolvable by paleomagnetic methods. Given a 20° ± 5° clockwise rotation of the Qaidam Basin with respect to the Tarim Basin, the maximum left-lateral displacement on the Altyn Tagh fault since 24 Ma is 500 ± 130 km.

No abstract; Depuis la démonstration par Runcorn (1956) de l’ouverture de l’Atlantique à l’aide des données paléomagnétiques d’Amérique du Nord et de l’Europe, l’outil palêomagnêtique a été largement utilisé à l’intérieur des continents stables où les résultats ont été considérés comme applicables à l’ensemble du craton concerné. Après cette première étape, qui a grandement contribué à la compréhension du mouvement relatif des grandes plaques, le paléomagnétisme est apparu comme un outil précieux pour l’étude,à plus petite échelle, des bordures continentales, fournissant de nouvelles contraintes pour 1 ’interprétation de l’évolution tectonique des chaines de montagne (Van der Voo et Channel, 1980 ; Perroud, 1982). Cependant, des problèmes spécifiques à ce genre d’étude apparaissent, qui nécessitent une grande finesse d’analyse et d’interprétation des résultats.Tout d’abord un problème d’analyse de l’origine de la rémanence et de ses composantes dans le cas d’aimantations multivectorielles, Ceci nous mène aux questions de datation, de rêaimantations chimiques, thermiques, totales ou partielles, de minéralogie magnétique, etc... Ensuite, l’important problème de l’effet de la déformation sur l’aimantation,en particulier dans le cas de roches ayant une forte déformation interne. Bien qu’évoqué à de multiples reprises, ce problème de la déformation interne n’a jamais été étudié dans des séries naturelles, la présence de telles déformations constituant plutôt un critère de rejet de ces séries pour un travail palêomagnêtique (Van der Voo et Channel, 1980).Sans négliger le premier aspect d’analyse qui constitue la base même de l’acquisition de données paléomagnétiques, je m’attacherai donc dans ce mémoire à approfondir l’étude des effets induits par la déformation interne sur l'orientation de la rémanence naturelle de quelques exemples de roches déformées ; en particulier, je me propose de tester un modèle de conportement passif de l’aimantation durant la déformation.

L'ensemble des travaux rassemblés dans ce mémoire constitue un essai de caractérisation des effets de la déformation interne sur l'aimantation rémanente des roches. Bien que le champ des investigations paléomagnétiques ait été récemment étendu aux zones déformées des plaques continentales, de tels effets sont actuellement mal connus . L'étude détaillée des relations entre aimantation et déformation interne apparait par conséquent nécessaire, dans le cadre du développement des méthodologies du paléomagnétisme en zone orogénique. Les principaux résultats obtenus sont les suivants : - L'étude de la déformation interne, de l'anisotropie de susceptibilité magnétique (AMS) et du paléomagnétisme du granite de Flamanville (Normandie, France), montre que la déformation, liée à la mise en place du granite, contrôle le développement d'une forte fabrique magnétique. L'AMS, due à une orientation préférentielle de grains allongés de magnétite polydomaine, est accompagnée par une anisotropie d'acquisition de l'aimantation ther morémanente (ATR) du matériau déformé. Une relation quadratique simple a été établie entre ces 2 tenseurs. Cette relation, vérifiée par des tests expérimentaux, a été appliquée au cas du granite de Flamanville : le tenseur inverse d'anisotropie d'ATR, estimé par la mesure de l'AMS, permet de corriger les déviations de l'ATR, et de déterminer une direction de champ magnétique fiable. Le problème des effets d'une déformation , interne postérieure à l'acquisition d'une aimantation a été abordé par le biais de simulations analogiques et numériques, et d'études paléomagnétiques de 3 formations rouges déformées (Alpes-Maritimes, Pyrénées, Bretagne). Il est montré que la rotation des porteurs magnétiques, induite par la déformation interne, et traduite par le développement de fabriques cristallographiques et magnétiques, produit une rotation de l'aimantation rémanente (à l'échelle du spécimen mesurable) depuis sa direction initiale vers le plan d'aplatissement de la déformation. A partir de cette description, l'évolution de populations de vecteurs a l'échelle d'un site de déformation homogène peut être prédite, en fonction des relations angulaires entre direction moyenne initiale de l'aimantation et directions principales de déformation. A l'échelle de la série plissée, la modification des relations angulaires aimantation/plan de stratification induit des anomalies de comportement vis-à-vis du test de pli . - Il est finalement montré que les déviations de l'aimantation, dans les modèles et dans les séries rouges étudiées, sont proches des déviations de lignes matérielles suivant le modèle de March (1932). Il apparait donc possible d'effectuer une déformation inverse de l'aimantation, dans le but de déterminer la direction d'aimantation antétectonique à l'état non déformé. Bien que tous les problèmes posés par la déformation interne en paléomagnétisme ne soient pas résolus, l'aspect positif des résultats obtenus ici permet d'envisager l'extension des investigations paléomagnétiques vers les zones modérément déformées des chaines de montagnes ., no abstract
