Abstract

Digital certificates are used to secure international computation and data storage grids used for e-Science projects, like the Worldwide Large Hadron Collider Computing Grid. The International Grid Trust Federation has defined the Grid Certificate Profile: a set of guidelines for digital certificates used for grid authentication. We have designed and implemented a program and related test suites for checking X.509 certificates against the certificate profiles and policies relevant for use on the Grid. The result is a practical tool that assists implementers and users of public key infrastructures to reach appropriate trust decisions., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, accepted for ACM SAC 2010

Abstract

We describe R-GMA (Relational Grid Monitoring Architecture) which has been developed within the European DataGrid Project as a Grid Information and Monitoring System. Is is based on the GMA from GGF, which is a simple Consumer-Producer model. The special strength of this implementation comes from the power of the relational model. We offer a global view of the information as if each Virtual Organisation had one large relational database. We provide a number of different Producer types with different characteristics; for example some support streaming of information. We also provide combined Consumer/Producers, which are able to combine information and republish it. At the heart of the system is the mediator, which for any query is able to find and connect to the best Producers for the job. We have developed components to allow a measure of inter-working between MDS and R-GMA. We have used it both for information about the grid (primarily to find out about what services are available at any one time) and for application monitoring. Abstract

11. Solids transport in combined sewerage systems

Abstract

Interest in the problems caused by the deposition of sediments in sewers, and by the transport of solids through and from sewer systems has given rise to a great deal of research both in the UK and internationally. A collaborative research effort has been initiated by the Water Research Centre (WRc) under the auspices of the UK Urban Pollution Management (UPM) programme to study all aspects of sediments in sewers. The work of the Wastewater Technology Centre (WWTC) of the University of Abertay Dundee (UAD) has made a major contribution to this aspect of the UPM programme. The work reported in this thesis constitutes a significant component of the WWTC research on solids transport in sewers. The accurate prediction of solids transport in sewers is a problem which has been addressed by a number of workers using various approaches, none of which has currently proved wholly satisfactory. This thesis describes an investigation of the transport of solids in combined sewers during both dry weather flow periods and storm flows. The study is based primarily on measurements of flow conditions and suspended solids concentrations at two sites on the main interceptor sewer at Murraygate, Dundee City Centre and one other site on a trunk sewer in the Perth Road area of Dundee. In addition, information on the associated accumulation of sediment in sewer inverts was obtained. The relationship between hydraulic conditions in these combined sewers and the transport of solids in suspension has been examined. The aim of the work was to arrive at a methodology by which an appropriate model could be selected or developed which would predict solids transport rates given information on hydraulic conditions.

49. Nanosecond Sampling of the Radio Sky with I-LOFAR's Transient Buffer Boards (TBB)

Abstract

The LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) is an interferometeric array that operates at 10-240 MHz, with a central hub in the Netherlands and 13 international stations across Europe [1]. LOFAR’s Transient Buffer Boards (TBBs) allow upwards of 5 s of data to be recorded at a temporal resolution of ~5.12 ns. Here, we described the development of a data acquisition system to capture TBB observations of solar variability from the Irish LOFAR station (I-LOFAR) at Birr Castle in the Irish Midlands. The system consists of a head node controlling 4 processing nodes offering 64 GB of RAM, as well as an initial 48 TB RAID6 storage node. We present first-light TBB time series data, along with all-sky observations data from a subset of I-LOFAR’s Low Band Antennas (LBAs). We also discuss the development of a software based beamformer for TBB data with plans to observe the sun with dynamic spectra using nanosecond time resolution. This could give a new insight into rapidly varying phenomena in the solar atmosphere.
