In this paper, dynamic behaviour of fiber reinforced mortars manufactured with innovative binders based on calcium sulphoaluminate cement (CSA), supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), gypsum (G) and hydrated lime (CH) was investigated. Fly ash (FA) and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) were used to develop sustainable Portland-free cementitious materials. Polypropylene structural fibers (1% by mortar volume) were used to reinforce the cementitious matrix. Fresh properties of mortars were evaluated in terms of workability and specific mass. In addition, elastic modulus, compressive and flexural strength were determined up 28 days from casting. The dynamic behaviour was studied by means of Split Hopkinson Tensile bar having 60 mm in diameter. Preliminary dynamic results reported in terms of stress versus crack opening displacement were evaluated and discussed.

In the realm of sustainable construction materials, the quest for low-environmental-impact binders has gained momentum. Addressing the global demand for concrete, several alternatives have been proposed to mitigate the carbon footprint associated with traditional Portland cement production. Despite technological advancements, property inconsistencies and cost considerations, the wholesale replacement of Portland cement remains a challenge. This study investigates the feasibility of using alkali-activated slag (AAS)-based binders for two specific applications: structural plaster and pervious concrete. The research aims to develop an M10-grade AAS plaster with a 28-day compressive strength of at least 10 MPa for the retrofitting of masonry buildings. The plaster achieved suitable levels of workability and applicability by trowel as well as a 28-day compressive strength of 10.8 MPa, and the level shrinkage was reduced by up to 45% through the inclusion of shrinkage-reducing admixtures. Additionally, this study explores the use of tunnel muck as a recycled aggregate in AAS pervious concrete, achieving a compressive strength up to 20 MPa and a permeability rate from 500 to 3000 mm/min. The relationship between aggregate size and the physical and mechanical properties of no-fines concretes usually used for cement-based pervious concrete was also confirmed. Furthermore, the environmental impacts of these materials, including their global warming potential (GWP) and gross energy requirement (GER), are compared to those of conventional mortars and concretes. The findings highlight that AAS materials reduce the GWP from 50 to 75% and the GER by about 10-30% compared to their traditional counterparts.

The increase in concrete structures' durability is a milestone to improve the sustainability of buildings and infrastructures. In order to ensure a prolonged service life, it is necessary to detect the deterioration of materials by means of monitoring systems aimed at evaluating not only the penetration of aggressive substances into concrete but also the corrosion of carbon-steel reinforcement. Therefore, proper data collection makes it possible to plan suitable restoration works which can be carried out with traditional or innovative techniques and materials. This work focuses on building heritage and it highlights the most recent findings for the conservation and restoration of reinforced concrete structures and masonry buildings.

The topic of sustainability of reinforced concrete structures is strictly related with their durability in aggressive environments. In particular, at equal environmental impact, the higher the durability of construction materials, the higher the sustainability. The present review deals with the possible strategies aimed at producing sustainable and durable reinforced concrete structures in different environments. It focuses on the design methodologies as well as the use of unconventional corrosion-resistant reinforcements, alternative binders to Portland cement, and innovative or traditional solutions for reinforced concrete protection and prevention against rebars corrosion such as corrosion inhibitors, coatings, self-healing techniques, and waterproofing aggregates. Analysis of the scientific literature highlights that there is no preferential way for the production of "green" concrete but that the sustainability of the building materials can only be achieved by implementing simultaneous multiple strategies aimed at reducing environmental impact and improving both durability and performances.

The increasing demand for reconstructions of concrete structures and the wide availability on the market of surface protective products and systems could lead to misunderstandings in the decision of the most effective solution. Surface protectors have become increasingly widespread in recent years in concrete restoration interventions thanks to their properties: they are able to protect the substrate from aggressive agents and consequently extend the useful life of the structures. The aim of this article is first of all to present the surface protective treatments available on the market, outlining their strengths and weaknesses. Subsequently, a characterization of seven different commercial coatings for reinforced-concrete structures is provided, taking into account chemical nature, fields of use and effectiveness, both in terms of physic and elastic performance and resistance to aggressive agents that undermine the durability of the treated concrete elements.

One of the most important parameters concerning durability is undoubtedly represented by cement matrix resistance to chloride diffusion in environments where reinforced concrete structures are exposed to the corrosion risk induced by marine environment or de-icing salts. This paper deals with protection from chloride ingress by a silane-based surface-applied corrosion inhibitor. Results indicated that the corrosion inhibitor (CI) allows to reduce the penetration of chloride significantly compared to untreated specimens, independently of w/c, cement type, and dosage. Reduction of chloride diffusion coefficient (D nssn ) measured by an accelerated test in treated concrete was in the range 30-60%. Natural chloride diffusion test values indicate a sharp decrease in apparent diffusion coefficient (D app ) equal to about 75% when concrete is protected by CI. Mechanism of action of CI in slowing down the chloride penetration inside the cement matrix is basically due to the water repellent effect as confirmed by data of concrete bulk electrical resistivity.

The paper represents the "state of the art" on sustainability in construction materials. In Part 1 of the paper, issues related to production, microstructures, chemical nature, engineering properties, and durability of mixtures based on binders alternative to Portland cement were presented. This second part of the paper concerns the use of traditional and innovative Portland-free lime-based mortars in the conservation of cultural heritage, and the recycling and management of wastes to reduce consumption of natural resources in the production of construction materials. The latter is one of the main concerns in terms of sustainability since nowadays more than 75% of wastes are disposed of in landfills.

This review presents "a state of the art" report on sustainability in construction materials. The authors propose different solutions to make the concrete industry more environmentally friendly in order to reduce greenhouse gases emissions and consumption of non-renewable resources. Part 1-the present paper-focuses on the use of binders alternative to Portland cement, including sulfoaluminate cements, alkali-activated materials, and geopolymers. Part 2 will be dedicated to traditional Portland-free binders and waste management and recycling in mortar and concrete production.
