Abstract This study utilized a pilot-scale distribution network to examine the impact of temperature increases (16 °C, 20 °C, 24 °C) and source variations (treated ground- and surface water) on bulk and biofilm communities over 137 days. Microbial characterization employed flow cytometry and 16 S rRNA gene-based amplicon sequencing to elucidate bulk-biofilm interactions. Bacterial bulk cell densities increased with higher temperatures, while water source variations significantly influenced bulk cell densities as well as the community composition. Additionally, growth curves were fitted on the flow cytometry results, and growth rates and carrying capacities were higher with treated groundwater at elevated temperatures. Conversely, biofilm cell densities remained unaffected by temperature. A mature biofilm was observed from day 70 onwards and a core biofilm microbiome, resilient to temperature and water source changes, was identified. These findings emphasize the importance of water source quality for maintaining biological stability in drinking water systems, particularly in the face of changing environmental conditions.

Abstract Ptychographic extreme ultraviolet (EUV) diffractive imaging has emerged as a promising candidate for the next generationmetrology solutions in the semiconductor industry, as it can image wafer samples in reflection geometry at the nanoscale. This technique has surged attention recently, owing to the significant progress in high-harmonic generation (HHG) EUV sources and advancements in both hardware and software for computation. In this study, a novel algorithm is introduced and tested, which enables wavelength-multiplexed reconstruction that enhances the measurement throughput and introduces data diversity, allowing the accurate characterisation of sample structures. To tackle the inherent instabilities of the HHG source, a modal approach was adopted, which represents the cross-density function of the illumination by a series of mutually incoherent and independent spatial modes. The proposed algorithm was implemented on a mainstream machine learning platform, which leverages automatic differentiation to manage the drastic growth in model complexity and expedites the computation using GPU acceleration. By optimising over 200 million parameters, we demonstrate the algorithm's capacity to accommodate experimental uncertainties and achieve a resolution approaching the diffraction limit in reflection geometry. The reconstruction of wafer samples with 20-nm high patterned gold structures on a silicon substrate highlights our ability to handle complex physical interrelations involving a multitude of parameters. These results establish ptychography as an efficient and accurate metrology tool.

Background: Shoulder instability in pediatric and adolescent patients can be treated operatively via arthroscopic or open procedures, but there a paucity of evidence to support the incidence of these treatment modalities over time. It is hypothesized that the overall rate of arthroscopic shoulder stabilization procedures will increase over time. Given advances in open stabilization techniques, we also hypothesized that the rate of open procedures may be increasing. Methods: The Pediatric Health Information System database was queried for patients 19 years or younger who underwent arthroscopic or open surgery for shoulder instability and pediatric orthopedic surgeries between 2009 and 2019. Data from 37 of the 52 pediatric hospitals with Pediatric Health Information System data was included in the analysis. Annual and overall incidence rates were estimated for arthroscopic and open procedures, along with 95% confidence intervals. The yearly incidence for secondary (homolateral revisions) or primary contralateral arthroscopic and open procedures was also examined. Results: 4747 patients underwent primary arthroscopic procedures and 384 patients had primary open procedures. There were 8.2 primary open shoulder stabilization procedures per 10,000 orthopedic surgical patients in 2009, which decreased by 19% to 6.7 per 10,000 orthopedic surgical patients in 2019. There was an increase seen in both arthroscopic and open secondary stabilization procedures. In 2009, there were 0.97 secondary arthroscopic procedures per 10,000 orthopedic surgical patients. This increased by 672% to 7.5 per 10,000 orthopedic surgical patients in 2019. No secondary open procedures were recorded in 2009; however, an increase to 2.6 secondary open procedures per 10,000 orthopedic surgical patients was seen by 2019. Conclusion: This study shows a rise in primary arthroscopic pediatric shoulder stabilization surgeries across the U.S. over the last decade. There was a slight decrease in the rate of primary open shoulder stabilization surgeries and an increase in both arthroscopic and open secondary (homolateral revisions or primary contralateral) shoulder stabilization surgeries, implying an increasing revision burden in this population.

Abstract The intricately connected interactions among personal choices, traditional cultural ideologies, and modern societal backgrounds have provoked dynamic interpretations and practices in performing domestic labor. The value of domestic labor in terms of macro considerations, such as reproductive value, economic value, and caring value, has been established in scholarly discussions. In China, the emphasis is on the meaningfulness of domestic care for the whole society. However, it remains unclear how family members in contemporary Chinese society understand the meaningfulness of performing domestic labor. This study aims to investigate what kinds of meaning that individuals derive from their day-to-day domestic labor and how the different types of meaningfulness affect their future behaviors in sharing domestic responsibilities. Meaningfulness is a complex notion, but Baumeister’s theory of meaning provides a theoretical framework to understand why humans need meaningfulness in life, the forms that meaningfulness takes, where meaningfulness resides, and how perceptions of meaningfulness are shaped. In total, 48 respondents participated in semi-structured, in-depth interviews concerning their attitudes toward the value of domestic labor. Findings based on in-depth interview data show that the meaningfulness of domestic labor consists of participants realizing their need for belonging, self-efficacy, and a sense of living a good life. These results also suggest that the values of domestic labor illustrated in previous studies, in which domestic labor was conceptualized as reproductive labor, economic activity, and care labor, have little effect on individuals’ lives. Nevertheless, the meaningfulness that individuals experience in daily life continues to motivate their devotion to domestic labor. Finally, the discursive mechanism shaping the meaningfulness of domestic labor is also discussed.

In the semiconductor industry, the demand for more precise and accurate overlay metrology tools has increased because of the continued shrinking of feature sizes in integrated circuits. To achieve the required sub-nanometre precision, the current technology for overlay metrology has become complex and is reaching its limits. Herein, we present a dark-field digital holographic microscope using a simple two-element imaging lens with a high numerical aperture capable of imaging from the visible to near-infrared regions. This combination of high resolution and wavelength coverage was achieved by combining a simple imaging lens with a fast and accurate correction of non-isoplanatic aberrations. We present experimental results for overlay targets that demonstrate the capability of our computational aberration correction in the visible and near-infrared wavelength regimes. This wide-ranged-wavelength imaging system can advance semiconductor metrology.

Abstract Background Previous initiatives concerning adolescent sexual and reproductive health (SRH) education in Low-or-Middle Income Countries (LMICs) have been limited by cultural norms and misinformation perpetuated within families. Responding to the paucity of research on the implementation of SRH interventions in LMICs and limited knowledge regarding their mechanisms, this study undertakes a process evaluation of a parent-focused intervention to promote parent-adolescent communication about SRH in Uganda. Methods This paper explores the implementation, contextual factors and mechanisms of impact of the intervention, using the Medical Research Council (MRC) guidelines for process evaluations. Implementation was evaluated through indicators of dose, fidelity and adaptations, acceptability and feasibility. The contextual factors and mechanisms of impact were evaluated to refine the intervention’s causal assumptions. Data was collected during April - October 2021 in South-Western Uganda using a mixed-methods approach, including document analysis, intervention observations, interviews, focus group discussions and most significant change stories. Results The acceptability of the intervention was related to its community engagement, the strong rapport with delivery agents, and individual characteristics of participants. Five contextual factors influencing implementation were highlighted; (i) cultural norms, (ii) perceptions about youth SRH, (iii) poverty, (iv) Covid-19 pandemic, and (v) prior research projects in the community. When considering the intervention’s mechanisms of impact, four causal pathways were identified; (i) Awareness of SRH needs helped parents overcome stigma, (ii) Parenting skills training improved SRH communication, (iii) Group learning stimulated shared parenting, and (iv) Group learning improved co-parenting. Conclusion The paper presented three key learnings and corresponding recommendations for future research. Firstly, implementation success was credited to meaningful community engagement which improved acceptability and uptake. Secondly, the complex influences of contextual factors highlighted the need for contextual analysis in research studies to inform intervention design. Finally, this evaluation recognised the interplay between mechanisms of impact and suggested further research consider such combined impacts when designing intervention content.

Purpose: To examine age- and sex-related differences in postoperative functional outcomes at approximately 6 months after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Methods: In this study, patients who underwent primary ACLR performed a series of return-to-sport functional tests at 5 to 8 months after surgery. Functional tests included strength tests (knee extensors, knee flexors, hip abductors, and hip extensors), a balance test (Y-balance composite score), and hop tests (single, triple, crossover, and 6-m timed hop tests). Limb symmetry was calculated to compare the reconstructed limb with the uninvolved limb. A 2-way multivariate analysis of covariance was used, and effect size was calculated for data analysis. Results: A total of 176 subjects were included in this study. There were no significant interaction between age and sex on return-to-sport functional tests after ACLR. Also, no main effects of age and sex on return-to-sport functional tests were found in our data. Conclusions: Age and sex do not significantly affect functional test performance after ACLR 6 months postoperatively. Level of Evidence: Level III, retrospective review of prospective cohort study.

Most optical phenomena result from the interaction of electromagnetic waves with matter. However, the light structure can be eminently more complex than plane waves, with many degrees of freedom and dimensions involved, yielding intricate configurations. Light transcends the conventional landscape of electromagnetism, offering the possibility to tailor light in three dimensions (intermixing all three electric field components), in four-dimensional spacetime (for fields manifesting both temporal and spatial patterns), and, beyond that, to make structured quantum light, tuning its characteristics at an unprecedented new level of control. This article addresses the physical foundations of structured light, its interactions with matter, including the nonlinear regime and probing chirality, its classical benefits with holography as a specific highlight, and quantum mechanical applications. It describes the various applications connecting structured light with material physics, quantum information, and technology. Notably, we discuss weak measurements with structured light acting as the meter with connections to probing structured-light beam shifts at interfaces. Ultimately, revealing the interplay between structured light and matter opens attractive avenues for different new technologies and applications, covering both the classical and the quantum realms.

Abstract Background This study explores patients’ need for information and support in deciding on esophageal cancer treatment, when experimental active surveillance and standard surgery are both feasible. Methods This psychological companion study was conducted alongside the Dutch SANO‐trial (Surgery As Needed for Oesophageal cancer). In‐depth interviews and questionnaires were used to collect data from patients who declined participation in the trial because they had a strong preference for either active surveillance (n = 20) or standard surgery (n = 20). Data were analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative techniques. Results Patients prefer to receive information directly from their doctors and predominantly rely on this information to make a treatment decision. Other information resources are largely used to confirm their treatment decision. Patients highly value support from their loved ones and appreciate emphatic doctors to actively involve them in the decision‐making process. Overall, patients’ needs for information and support during decision‐making were met. Conclusions The importance of shared decision‐making and the role doctors have in this process is underlined. The role of doctors is essential at the initial phase of decision‐making: Once patients seem to have formed their treatment preference for either active surveillance or surgery, the influence of external resources (including doctors) may be limited.

In this paper, we present a novel localization scheme, location-aware ranging correction (LARC), to correct ranging estimates from ultra wideband (UWB) signals. Existing solutions to calculate ranging corrections rely solely on channel information features (e.g., signal energy, maximum amplitude, estimated range). We propose to incorporate a preliminary location estimate into a localization chain, such that location-based features can be calculated as inputs to a range-error prediction model. This way, we can add information to range-only measurements without relying on additional hardware such as an inertial measurement unit (IMU). This improves performance and reduces overfitting behavior. We demonstrate our LARC method using an open-access measurement dataset with distances up to 20 m, using a simple regression model that can run purely on the CPU in real-time. The inclusion of the proposed features for range-error mitigation decreases the ranging error 90th percentile (P90) by 58% to 15 cm (compared to the uncorrected range error), for an unseen trajectory. The 2D localization P90 error is improved by 21% to 18 cm. We show the robustness of our approach by comparing results to a changed environment, where metallic objects have been moved around the room. In this modified environment, we obtain a 56% better P90 ranging performance of 16 cm. The 2D localization P90 error improves as much as for the unchanged environment, by 17% to 18 cm, showing the robustness of our method. This method evolved from the first-ranking solution of the 2021 and 2022 International Conference on Indoor Position and Indoor Navigation (IPIN) Competition.

Abstract Background COVID-19 measures, such as face masks, have clear consequences for the communicative accessibility of people with hearing impairment because they reduce speech perception. As communication is essential to participate in society, this might have impact on their mental well-being. This study was set out to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 measures on the communicative accessibility and well-being of adults with hearing impairment. Method Two groups of adults took part in this study, with (N = 150) and without (N = 50) hearing loss. The participants answered statements on a five point Likert-scale. Statements regarding communicative accessibility involved speech perception abilities, behavioral changes and access to information. Well-being was measured at the overall level in daily community life and at work, and in particular also with respect to perceived stress. We asked participants with hearing impairment on their audiological needs during the pandemic. Results Significant group differences were found on speech perception abilities due to COVID-19 measures. Behavioral changes were observed to compensate for the loss in speech perception. Hearing loss was associated with an increased request for repetition or for removal of the face mask. Using information technology (e.g. Zoom) or contacting colleagues did not pose any major problems for the hearing group, whereas participants with hearing loss gave mixed responses. A significant difference emerged between groups on well-being in daily life, but not on well-being at work or perceived stress. Conclusions This study shows the detrimental effect of COVID-19 measures on the communicative accessibility of individuals with hearing loss. It also shows their resilience as only partial group differences were found on well-being. Protective factors are indicated, such as access to information and audiological care.

Future long-term space exploration missions require the implementation of circular life support systems for the supply of water, oxygen and food from mission wastes. Therefore, separation systems dealing with multi-phasic streams need to be addressed. The BioHarvest (BHV) study focused on solid/liquid separation in space with the aim to demonstrate the continuous separation and harvesting of the cyanobacterium Limnospira indica from its culture broth under axenic conditions. The cyanobacterium biomass is intended to be used for further food processing while the broth free of organic matter and resupplied with nutrients should be directly recycled into the photobioreactor (PBR). In this study, an automated breadboard model based on a two-step process was built. First, a Biomass Harvesting Unit (BHU) separates the biomass produced in the PBR from the culture medium with dead-end filtration. Second, the Medium Filtration Unit (MFU) further treats the culture medium to retain the dissolved organic compounds using crossflow filtration. The performances of BHU and MHU met the requirements in batch mode and in short continuous mode: the BHU was able to retain all the biomass and the MFU could retain more than 90% of organic matter while being permeable to nutrients. The productivity of the MFU was also very good, with a high permeation flux allowing treating the targeted 80 L of culture per day. However, continuous operation of the BHV technology could not be achieved in the long term due to biomass accumulation as a sticky cake with a high specific resistance on the BHU filter, despite backwashing cycles and intense vibrations. Future work shall therefore focus on this critical step, to improve process performance by preventing fouling of the filter sheets.

Background & Aims: In contrast to mismatch repair deficient colorectal carcinoma (CRC), MMR proficient (pMMR) CRC does not respond to immune checkpoint blockade. We studied immune checkpoint stimulation via glucocorticoid-induced tumor necrosis factor receptor-related protein (GITR) on ex vivo functionality of human tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) isolated from pMMR primary CRC and liver metastases (CRLM). Methods: Using lymphocytes from resected tumor, adjacent tissues, and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of 132 pMMR primary CRC or CRLM patients, we determined GITR expression and the in vitro T-cell agonistic activity of recombinant GITR ligation. Results: Here, we show that GITR was overexpressed on TIL when compared with other stimulatory immune checkpoints (4-1BB, OX40). Its expression was enhanced in TIL compared with PBMC and adjacent tissues. Among CD4+ TIL, GITR expression was primarily expressed by CD45RA- FoxP3hi activated regulatory T cells. Within CD8+ TIL, GITR was predominantly expressed on functionally exhausted and putative tumor-reactive CD103+ CD39+ TIL. Strikingly, recombinant GITRL reinvigorated ex vivo TIL responses by significantly enhancing CD4+ and CD8+ TIL numbers. Dual treatment with GITRL and nivolumab (anti-PD1) enhanced CD8+ TIL expansion compared with GITRL monotherapy. Moreover, GITRL/anti-PD1 dual therapy further improved anti-PD1-mediated reinvigoration of interferon gamma secretion by exhausted CD8 TIL from primary CRC. Conclusions: GITR is overexpressed on CD4+ and CD8+ TIL from pMMR CRC and CRLM. Agonistic targeting of GITR enhances ex vivo human TIL functionality and may therefore be a promising approach for novel monotherapy or combined immunotherapies in primary pMRR CRC and CRLM.

Plain English summary Communication between parents and children about sexual and reproductive health (SRH) during the early adolescence stage (10–14 years) plays a significant role in creating positive reproductive health outcomes in later adolescence and adulthood. We conducted surveys in rural areas of Mbarara district among 218 pairs of caregivers and their children aged 10–14 years between January and February 2020. The purpose of the study was to understand whether there is communication between the two, and how comfortable they felt having discussions about SRH. We also asked caregivers and their children about their knowledge of SRH, and how they generally felt about SRH for young people. This study, however, reports only results from caregivers. We found that, on average, caregivers discussed 4 of the 10 SRH topics explored in this survey with their child, and that the majority of the caregivers reported being very comfortable discussing SRH—especially general health and bodily hygiene—with their children. On the whole, we found that caregivers’ SRH communication was largely influenced by their comfort with discussing SRH with their adolescent child. The level of comfort was influenced by the number of young adolescents living in a household. However, there is no clear justification for this finding from existing literature. In conclusion, there is a need for interventions that facilitate improvement of communication on SRH between parents/caregivers and young adolescents. These should focus on improving comfort levels by promoting communication skills for caregivers and emphasizing value clarification.
