MÉTODOS: Foram avaliados 153 estudantes, independente do sexo, com idade entre 18 e 31 anos, submetidos à análise do perfil lipídico, incluindo níveis séricos de colesterol total (CT), fração de colesterol das lipoproteínas de baixa (LDLc), alta (HDLc) e muito baixa densidade (VLDLc) e triglicérides (TG), além de hábitos de vida e dados antropométricos. The aim of this note was to record for the first time the finding of Hemilucilia segmentaria acting as biological vector of Dermatobia hominis, during a study of the diversity of Calliphoridae at Reserva Biológica do Tinguá, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The insects were captured using traps baited with chicken vicera, for a period of 28-30 h twice per month. In the period of one year, 1987 insects were collected, 7.5% of which belonged to the H. segmentaria; of these a female was captured in May 2001, carrying a mass of 20 eggs on the left side of its abdomen.

Purpose: Frailty is common in older patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and has been considered an independent risk factor for adverse clinical outcomes in this population. CKD-associated mineral and bone metabolism (CKD-MBD) increases energy expenditure and causes malnutrition and inflammation leading to frailty. We investigated whether CKD-MBD markers and energy metabolism are associated with frailty in patients with advanced CKD on conservative management., Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we investigated factors associated with frailty in a sample of 75 patients ≥ 65 years, with stage 4 or 5 CKD. Collected data included age, sex, body mass index, physical activity status, educational level, Charlson Comorbidity Index, and laboratory markers. Frailty was evaluated according to Fried's classification., Results: Frailty was observed in 51.3% and pre-frailty in 47.3%. The frail population was significantly older, with a high proportion of females, more inactive, had lower educational levels, spent a long time sitting throughout the day, and had higher phosphate and fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF-21). In the multivariate logistic analysis age (odds ratio 1.13, p = 0.026) and phosphate (odds ratio 3.38, p = 0.021) remained independently associated with frailty., Conclusion: Serum phosphate seems to be a toxin associated with the frailty phenotype in older patients with CKD. Whether strategies to decrease serum phosphate would reduce the risk of frailty in this population deserves further evaluation., (© 2024. Further research is needed to clarify the association of the different forms of bullying with social anxiety and social withdrawal over time in adolescents. This two-wave panel study with a 1-year time lag (October 2021-October 2022) examined the cross-lagged relationships between bullying victimization and bullying perpetration, social anxiety (i.e., fear or distress in social situations), and social withdrawal (i.e., consistent, and deliberate social solitude). Participants were 485 middle school students (234 girls) attending the seventh or eighth grade at Time 1 (T1) (M age  = 12.67 years, SD = 1.14 years). Social anxiety and social withdrawal were assessed using subscales of the Social and Emotional Competencies Evaluation Questionnaire. Bullying perpetration and bullying victimization were assessed using the Bullying and Cyberbullying Behavior Questionnaire-Short Form. The within-wave associations between the study variables were similar at T1 and Time 2 (T2), with the exception that the association between bullying perpetration and social anxiety was much weaker at T1 than at T2. The results of the path analysis showed that T1 bullying perpetration predicted T2 social anxiety, and that T1 bullying victimization predicted T2 social withdrawal. We also found a reciprocal relationship between social anxiety and social withdrawal. There is a lack of studies analyzing if universal school-based Social and Emotional Learning programs can reduce social withdrawal and social anxiety. This study analyzed the effectiveness of one such program on those variables, and the role of individual school climate perceptions. In this nationwide study, 704 seventh to eighth-grade Portuguese students (M age  = 12.96, SD = 1.09, 48% girls), of which 215 (30.6%) in the comparison group, were assessed at pretest, post-test, and follow-up seven months later. Analyses showed positive intervention results in self- and teacher-reported social withdrawal and social anxiety. Regarding school climate, intervention group students with more positive teacher-student relationships benefitted more from program participation in social anxiety. The closure of schools during the COVID-19 pandemic affected adolescents' social withdrawal and social anxiety. Yet, self-esteem may have acted as a protective factor during this period. This study aimed to compare the trajectories of social withdrawal and social anxiety before (Year 1), during (Year 2 and 3), and after (Year 4) the closure of schools imposed by the COVID-19-related lockdowns, and to investigate the association of self-esteem with these trajectories. Participants were 844 (50.6% boys) Portuguese adolescents (mean age 12.70 years, SD = 1.14). The Social and Emotional Competencies Evaluation Questionnaire (QACSE) was used to assess social withdrawal and social anxiety, while The Global Self-Esteem scale of the Self-Description Questionnaire II was used to measure self-esteem. Growth curve analysis showed that social withdrawal and social anxiety had more negative trajectories during the year in which the school closures occurred. In addition, adolescents reported higher social withdrawal after the lockdowns than before the pandemic. Higher self-esteem was associated with a more positive trajectory in social withdrawal. Therefore, the results showed the negative of impact of the closure of schools on adolescents' social anxiety and social withdrawal, and that self-esteem was a protective factor during these challenging and adverse events., (© 2023. Introduction: There is an increased call for studies analyzing how implementation quality influences Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) program effectiveness., Methods: The current dissemination study analyzed the effectiveness of the Positive Attitude Upper Middle School SEL program on a Portuguese nationwide sample composed of 813 middle school students (7th and 8th grade; 51.7% boys; M age  = 12.41, S.D.  = 1.06), from 36 classrooms ( M classroom  = 22.58; S.D.  = 2.86), distributed between the control group (179 students), and three intervention groups (643 students) that reflected low, middle, and high implementer experience (respectively, Gulbenkian Academies of Knowledge, Positive Attitude Cadaval and Positive Attitude Torres Vedras). Dosage and fidelity (as implementation quality dimensions), gender, and classroom size (as individual and classroom-level variables) were also analyzed. Self-report questionnaires were administered pre- and post-intervention and at a 6-month follow-up., Results: Multilevel models were employed, and results showed that participating in the PAUMS SEL program led to more positive trajectories in self-control, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making when compared with control groups. Regarding implementation quality, only the implementer's experience impacted the effectiveness of the PAUMS SEL program; students in the Gulbenkian Academies of Knowledge intervention group displayed a less positive trajectory in self-control than students in the Positive Attitude Torres Vedras intervention group., Discussion: Altogether, results showed that the PAUMS SEL program is ready for dissemination in Portugal, although a higher level of implementer experience is needed to achieve the best effectiveness, and they support the importance of analyzing implementer experience in SEL programs' effectiveness studies., Competing Interests: The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2023 Coelho, Marchante and Brás.)

In the last decades, improvements in the average life expectancy in the world population have been associated with a significant increase in the proportion of elderly people, in parallel with a higher prevalence of non-communicable diseases, such as hypertension and diabetes. As the kidney is a common target organ of a variety of diseases, an adequate evaluation of renal function in the approach of this population is of special relevance. It is also known that the kidneys undergo aging-related changes expressed by a decline in the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), reflecting the loss of kidney function, either by a natural senescence process associated with healthy aging or by the length of exposure to diseases with potential kidney damage. Accurate assessment of renal function in the older population is of particular importance to evaluate the degree of kidney function loss, enabling tailored therapeutic interventions. The present review addresses a relevant topic, which is the effects of aging on renal function. In order to do that, we analyze and discuss age-related structural and functional changes. The text also examines the different options for evaluating GFR, from the use of direct methods to the implementation of several estimating equations. Purpose: Hyperuricemia is common among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). In the general population, hyperuricemia is associated with secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT), in a mechanism that involves vitamin D metabolism. Data for patients with CKD, however, are scarce. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between hyperuricemia and mineral and bone metabolism, particularly hyperparathyroidism., Methods: This is a retrospective study that included 922 adult patients with stages 3, 4, or 5 CKD, not on dialysis. Clinical, demographic, and biochemical data were collected from charts and included uric acid, parathyroid hormone (PTH), 25(OH)-vitamin D, calcium, phosphate, renal function (estimated glomerular filtration rate-eGFR), and medications such as allopurinol, furosemide, and cholecalciferol. SHPT was defined as PTH > 65 pg/ml., Results: Our patients were mostly Caucasian women, with a mean age of 64 ± 16 years. SHPT and hyperuricemia were observed in 70% and 62.4% of patients, respectively. Patients with SHPT presented higher levels of uric acid (7.2 ± 1.8 vs. 6.6 ± 1.7 mg/dL, p = 0.0001) and a higher frequency of hyperuricemia (66% vs. 33%, p = 0.0001). Patients with hyperuricemia were mostly female, with lower eGFR, higher phosphate, and higher PTH. The risk of hypovitaminosis D was higher among patients with SHPT (69.7% vs. 53.1%, p = 0.0001). Hyperuricemia remained independently associated with hyperparathyroidism, (p = 0.033) even after adjustments for eGFR, calcium, phosphate, hypovitaminosis D, and use of allopurinol, calcitriol, furosemide, and cholecalciferol., Conclusion: Hyperuricemia seems to be a contributing factor for SHPT in patients with CKD. This study analyzed the effectiveness of an elementary school Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) program during middle school transition in Portugal, and the influence of gender, classroom size and student's perception of two school climate dimensions (student-student relationships and teacher-student relationships) upon its effectiveness. One-thousand-sixty-three students (M age = 9.14; SD = 0.64; 51.2% were boys) participated: 702 in the intervention group and 361 in the control group, assessed at pretest, post-test, and follow-up 10 months later (after middle school transition). Multilevel analyses identified that the program was effective in enhancing social awareness, self-control, and self-esteem, even after middle school transition. Results also showed that there no differential gains by gender, and that intervention group students who had more positive perceptions of student-student relationships and teacher-student relationships displayed more positive trajectories in self-esteem. Students from smaller fourth-grade classrooms displayed lower social awareness than students from larger fourth-grade classrooms, but a more positive trajectory in that competence than students from medium and larger fourth-grade classrooms. This study investigated how social and emotional competencies are related to middle school students' involvement in bullying, and whether class-levels variables influence this association. There were 668 participants ( M age = 12.73, SD = 1.08) who participated in a screening for inclusion in a social and emotional learning program. Results showed that students not involved in bullying displayed higher levels of self-esteem than students involved in bullying in any role (victims, perpetrators, or bully-victims), higher levels of self-control and social awareness than perpetrators and bully-victims, and higher levels of responsible decision making than bully-victims. Gender did not moderate the relation between any bullying roles and social and emotional competencies, but class size moderated the relation between being a bully/victim and self-esteem and between being a bully and self-control. These results supported the relevance of including class-level variables when analyzing the relation between bullying and social and emotional competencies.

Background: Renal replacement therapy (RRT) is usually indicated for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) with glomerular filtration rate below 10 ml/ml/min/1.73m 2 . However, the need for RRT and timing of dialysis initiation are debatable for patients aged 70 years or older. We here describe the study design and methodology of the Aging Nephropathy Study (AGNES) protocol that aims at evaluating to what extent geriatric-related conditions such as frailty, cognitive dysfunction, and presence of comorbidities have an impact on survival and RRT initiation in this group of patients. In this manuscript we provide detailed information about the AGNES study design and methodology., Methods: AGNES is a prospective observational cohort that aim to investigate clinical, biochemical and demographic factors associated with RRT initiation and mortality of patients with CKD stage 4 or 5 who are aged 70 years and older. We plan to include 200 patients over 5 years. Clinically stable outpatients on conservative management for at least 6 months will be recruited from the Nephrogeriatric Clinic at the Hospital das Clinicas da Universidade de Sao Paulo, Brazil. Eligible patients are submitted to a full clinical examination, geriatric assessment, and blood test at baseline. Following the baseline visit the patients are being monitored during an observational follow up period of at least 12 months during which patients will be contacted in the clinic at their regular follow up or by phone until either RRT initiation or death occurs. This cohort includes evaluation of cognition by the education-adjusted 10-point Cognitive Screener (10-CS), frailty by Fried index score, a complete nutritional assessment (by body composition assessment, global subjective assessment and dietary intake), comorbidities by Charlson comorbidity index and biochemical markers including FGF-23 and Klotho., Discussion: The AGNES cohort, a real-world study of current clinical practice in elderly patients with advanced CKD prior to dialysis initiation, will shed light into progression of CKD and its complications, indications of RRT and factors determining survival. This investigation will elucidate to what extent geriatric conditions, nutritional status and clinical factors are associated with survival, quality of life and RRT initiation in elderly CKD patients not yet on dialysis., Trial Registration: Registered on ClinicalTrials.gov on 18 October 2019 ( NCT04132492 ).

Background: Little is known about the association between acute mental changes and adverse outcomes in hospitalized adults with COVID-19., Objectives: To investigate the occurrence of delirium in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 and explore its association with adverse outcomes., Design: Longitudinal observational study., Setting: Tertiary university hospital dedicated to the care of severe cases of COVID-19 in São Paulo, Brazil., Participants: A total of 707 patients, aged 50 years or older, consecutively admitted to the hospital between March and May 2020., Measurements: We completed detailed reviews of electronic medical records to collect our data. We identified delirium occurrence using the Chart-Based Delirium Identification Instrument (CHART-DEL). Trained physicians with a background in geriatric medicine completed all CHART-DEL assessments. We complemented our baseline clinical information using telephone interviews with participants or their proxy. Our outcomes of interest were in-hospital death, length of stay, admission to intensive care, and ventilator utilization. We adjusted all multivariable analyses for age, sex, clinical history, vital signs, and relevant laboratory biomarkers (lymphocyte count, C-reactive protein, glomerular filtration rate, D-dimer, and albumin)., Results: Overall, we identified delirium in 234 participants (33%). On admission, 86 (12%) were delirious. We observed 273 deaths (39%) in our sample, and in-hospital mortality reached 55% in patients who experienced delirium. Delirium was associated with in-hospital death, with an adjusted odds ratio of 1.75 (95% confidence interval = 1.15-2.66); the association held both in middle-aged and older adults. Delirium was also associated with increased length of stay, admission to intensive care, and ventilator utilization., Conclusion: Delirium was independently associated with in-hospital death in adults aged 50 years and older with COVID-19. Understanding which environmental factors influence the trajectory of self-concept and self-esteem during middle school transition may help schools better support students during this period. This short longitudinal study examined the influence of students' perceptions of school climate upon the trajectory of students' self-concept and self-esteem during middle school transition. Students in 25 classes from four schools (N = 404; M age  = 9.40, SD = 0.67) completed self-report measures of self-concept and self-esteem at four time points: twice before (fourth grade) and twice after middle school transition (fifth grade). The results showed that students with more positive perceptions of school climate in the beginning of fifth grade displayed more positive trajectories in self-concept and self-esteem. Students from larger fourth grade classes had more positive trajectories of social self-concept compared to those from smaller classes. The findings highlight the importance of school climate in the development of self-concept and self-esteem during middle school transition.

Current cyberbullying literature lacks longitudinal studies clarifying its predictors and consequences. This 1-year longitudinal study investigated how social and emotional competencies develop according to Portuguese middle school students' involvement in cyberbullying, and whether class size influences this relationship. There were 455 participants (M age  = 12.58; SD = 0.94; 46% girls), and data collection through self-reports took place in three different moments during 12 months. The results showed that students involved in cyberbullying in any role displayed negative trajectories during 1 year in self-control and social awareness, while victims and bully-victims displayed a more pronounced decrease in self-esteem and relationship skills during the same period. Additionally, girls displayed higher initial social awareness levels, while larger classes were associated with higher levels of self-control and responsible decision making. These results supported the importance of conducting longitudinal research and using a multilevel approach to address this topic.

There is a lack of studies in the literature addressing the differential effectiveness of Social and Emotional Learning according to their implementation setting. This study compared the effectiveness of an upper middle school Social and Emotional Learning program applied in two different settings: within school and after-school hours, while controlling for individual and class-level variables. There were 837 students (M age =  12.70; SD = 0.98; 47.6% were female): 246 in the control group, 319 in the after-school intervention group and 272 in the within school schedule intervention group, assessed at pretest, post-test and follow-up seven months later. Multilevel analyses identified more positive intervention results in on self-esteem, self-control, and social awareness for students in the within school schedule groups. Girls gained more in social awareness in both program settings. This study highlights the importance of analyzing Social and Emotional Learning program´s differential effectiveness in order to optimize it.

The middle school transition is a salient developmental experience impacting adolescents around the world. This study employed a randomized-controlled treatment design, with randomization at the school level, to investigate the impact of a school adjustment program for middle school transition and potential gender differences. Participants included 1147 students (M age  = 9.62; SD = 0.30, 45.7 % girls), who were assessed at four time points during the transition, regarding five dimensions of self-concept (academic, social, emotional, physical and family) and self-esteem. Parallel growth curves were employed to analyze the evolution of self-concept. Following the transition to middle school, students reported lower levels of self-concept (academic, emotional and physical) and self-esteem, while participation in the intervention led to increases in self-esteem and gains in social self-concept. No gender differences were found. These results provide preliminary evidence supporting such interventions in early middle school transitions.

Understanding which factors are relevant for the effectiveness of social and emotional learning programs is of key importance in designing interventions. This study investigated the effectiveness of a universal, school-based, social and emotional learning program for low middle school students (5th and 6th grades) and compared two program delivery formats for the intervention: curriculum (a semi-structured format) and pre-package (fixed structure).The program also analyzed differential gender effects. There were 982 participants (M age  = 11.22; SD = 1.02, 46.8 % girls): 318 in the control condition, 355 students in the intervention delivered with a curriculum format and 309 in the intervention delivered in a pre-package format, assessed at pretest, posttest and follow-up eight months later. Multilevel analyses identified positive intervention results in social awareness, self-control, self-esteem, social isolation and social anxiety. The pre-packaged format led to better results in self-esteem and social isolation. Boys gained more in social awareness in both program delivery formats. These findings support the program's effectiveness and the importance of designing the intervention to match program delivery formats with developmental needs.

We examined the effects of a social and emotional learning program, Program Positive Attitude, on the social and emotional competencies and self-esteem of Portuguese elementary school students, from the twin perspectives of students and their teachers. Participants were 1237 fourth grade students from 37 schools in a Portuguese municipality, with a mean age of 9.2 years, of which 970 students (in 86 classes) participated in the program and 267 students (in 21 classes) served as a comparison group. Students and their teachers completed questionnaires prior to and following the intervention. We used multilevel linear modeling with a repeated measures design to evaluate the effectiveness of the program. Both students and their teachers reported significant intervention gains in self-control and social awareness. Students' in the intervention group also identified reductions in social isolation and improvements in self-esteem, and their teachers reported decreases in their students' social anxiety. An analysis by gender revealed that only girls showed increases in self-esteem, and only boys reported reduced social isolation. These findings support the effectiveness of the program.

Transition from elementary to middle school is commonly seen as a period of stress, impacting students' school adjustment. The present longitudinal study aimed to analyze the difference in stress levels between the end of 4th grade and 5th grade, while also analyzing gender differences and 5th grade retention. Two hundred fifty-eight 4th grade students (M age = 9.55; SD = 0.77) from six Portuguese public schools, from the municipality of Torres Vedras, participated in this study. Self-report questionnaires were administered at the end of the 4th and 5th grades, and 5th grade school records were also collected. Results showed that 5th graders present higher levels of Academic Stress (d = .29) and Teacher/Rules Stress (d = .28). Girls had a greater increase of Peer-related Stress with the transition (p < .01). Students who were retained at the end of 5th grade showed higher increases of Teacher/Rules Stress (p < .05). Intervention programs that aim to support the transition from elementary to middle school are needed, in order to reduce the increase of stress levels at 5th grade and to promote a better school adjustment in the first year of middle school.

The Social and Emotional Competencies Evaluation Questionnaire-Teacher's version, Short Form (QACSE-P-SF) allows teachers to assess their students' social and emotional competencies, having been designed for program evaluation. Thirty-nine teachers completed the QACSE-P-SF, regarding 657 students (fourth to ninth grades). Factor analyses supported a six-factor structure with acceptable internal consistency. Sex differences were found with teachers reporting girls as having higher scores on Self-Control, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision Making. Developmental differences were also found with fourth-grade students presenting higher levels of Social Awareness and Relationship Skills than older students. [Purpose] This study aimed to assess the exercise capacity and muscle strength in elderly people using drugs for angiotensin-II blockage. [Subjects and Methods] Four hundred and seven older adults were recruited for this study. Data about comorbidities and medication use were recorded and the individuals were divided into three groups: control group- elderly people with normal exercise capacity (n=235); angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor group - individuals using angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (n=140); and angiotensin-II receptor blocker group- patients using angiotensin-II receptor blockers (n= 32). Exercise capacity was evaluated by a 6-minute walking test and muscle strength was measured using a handgrip dynamometer. [Results] Patients from the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor group (mean: 99 ± 12%) and the angiotensin-II receptor blocker group (mean: 101 ± 14%) showed higher predicted values in the 6-minute walking test than the control group patients (mean: 96 ± 10%). Patients from the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor group (mean: 105 ± 19%) and the angiotensin-II receptor blocker group (mean: 105.1 ± 18.73%) showed higher predicted values of muscle strength than control group patients (mean: 98.15 ± 18.77%). [Conclusion] Older adults using angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin-II receptor blockers have better functional exercise capacity and muscle strength.

A practical and easy control of the authenticity of organic sugarcane samples based on the use of machine-learning algorithms and trace elements determination by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry is proposed. Reference ranges for 32 chemical elements in 22 samples of sugarcane (13 organic and 9 non organic) were established and then two algorithms, Naive Bayes (NB) and Random Forest (RF), were evaluated to classify the samples. Accurate results (>90%) were obtained when using all variables (i.e., 32 elements). However, accuracy was improved (95.4% for NB) when only eight minerals (Rb, U, Al, Sr, Dy, Nb, Ta, Mo), chosen by a feature selection algorithm, were employed. Thus, the use of a fingerprint based on trace element levels associated with classification machine learning algorithms may be used as a simple alternative for authenticity evaluation of organic sugarcane samples., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. This study investigated the impact, reported by students and their teachers, of a universal, school-based, social-emotional learning program, implemented in three school years on the social-emotional competencies of middle school students (7th to 9th grade). It also analyzes, at post-test and follow-up, the differential results by gender and among students with lower levels of competence. There were 1091 participants, 855 students received the treatment condition (i.e., Project Attitude) and 236 students the control condition. Self-reports identified positive intervention results in social awareness, self-control, self-esteem, social isolation and social anxiety, teachers reported gains in all dimensions. These positive effects were stably effective along the three cohorts. Self-reports also identified bigger gains for girls in social awareness and for boys in social anxiety, self-esteem and leadership. Students with initial lower levels of competence benefited more from the intervention, especially at follow-up. This article seeks to describe the profile of treatment and internment in public psychiatric hospitals in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, from 2002 to 2011. The changes in the characteristics of treatment and the profiles of the patients treated are analyzed in the context of health care reform. It is a study of temporal series with trend analysis by means of linear regression. There was a reduction in the total of patients treated in the period under scrutiny. Inversely, there was an increase in internments with a reduction in length of stay, though no change in readmission rates. Patients from Belo Horizonte prevailed, however a relative increase in demand from the surrounding area was observed. There was a reversal in the prevalence of morbidity switching from psychotic disorders to disorders resulting from the use of alcohol and/or other drugs. The alteration observed in the profile of treatment in public psychiatric hospitals in Belo Horizonte was concomitant with the progressive implementation of community mental health services, which have probably met the demand that was formerly directed to these hospitals. Currently the psychiatric hospital is not the first, much less the only venue for treatment in the mental health network in Minas Gerais.

Mature Ts1, the main neurotoxin from Tityus serrulatus venom, has its C-terminal Cys amidated, while the isolated isoform of Ts1, named Ts1-G, keeps the non-amidated Gly residue at the C-terminal region, allowing the study of the comparative functional importance of amidation at the C-terminal between these two native toxins. Voltage dependent sodium current measurements showed that the affinity of Ts1-G for sodium channels is smaller than that of the mature Ts1, confirming the important role played by the C-terminal amidation in determining Ts1 activity., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Background: Clinical and laboratory methods have been developed to assess the different dimensions of postural control with the aim to increase the clinical relevance of decisions about balance deficit., Objectives: The purpose of this study was to correlate the force platform measurements with two functional tests used to evaluate balance in elderly., Methods: A total of 124 physically independent elderly volunteers participated in this study. Subjects performed the following three tests: 1) a traditional functional balance test, named the one-leg standing test, which measures the time in seconds at this position; 2) a functional agility/dynamic balance test, which quantifies the total time in seconds that a subject can stand up from a chair and move as quickly as possible around two cones; and 3) an unipodal balance test on a force platform., Results: The one-leg standing test yielded a mean of 12 seconds (SD=9 s), while the mean time observed in the functional agility/dynamic balance test was 26 seconds (SD=6 s). The correlations between the balance parameters of force platform and two functional tests varied between -0.28 and 0.20, which shows a weak association between them., Conclusions: Our results support the idea that these functional tests do not necessarily furnish the same information regarding balance mechanisms as the force platform. This study contributes to the evaluation of balance in elderly and suggests that functional tests should be used with caution especially in regards to the purposes of the research and when conducting clinical assessments of the elderly.

Memory complaints are common in elderly, and may be associated with many clinical problems., Objective: To identify clinical conditions and possible factors related to memory complaints in elderly outpatients presenting at a tertiary unit., Methods: Patients with memory complaints and normal cognitive screening tests were submitted to clinical and laboratorial testing. Radiological evaluation was performed as needed for diagnosis., Results: One hundred and seventy-seven subjects were initially evaluated, 12 were excluded because of poor and inconsistent memory complaints. Of the remainder, seventeen had criteria for dementia diagnosis. Ninety-two (55.4%) had one or more comorbid conditions possibly related to their complaints. Major depression was present in 26.0%. Sixteen patients (9.6%) had vitamin B12 deficiency, 8 were in use of inappropriate medications, and 7 (4.2%) had hypothyroidism. Other conditions diagnosed were: generalized anxiety disorder, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, hyperparathyroidism, normal pressure hydrocephalus. Three patients had severe hearing loss (in 22 with hearing complaints); one had severe visual impairment (in 22 with visual complaints)., Conclusions: Comprehensive evaluation was able to identify treatable conditions possibly related to memory complaints.

We investigated age-related changes in learning and memory performance and behavioural extinction in the water maze; and in endogenous levels of serotonin (5-HT) and 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid (5-HIAA) in the neocortex, hippocampus, thalamus and dorsal raphe nucleus of Wistar rats. Another aim was to assess the correlation between behavioural and biochemical parameters, which were measured in rodents of two different ages: 5 months (adults) and 16 months (middle-aged). The middle-aged subjects succeeded in learning the behavioural task, albeit with significantly worse performance when compared to adult animals. Aging also had significant main effects on memory and extinction. An age-dependent decrease in 5-HIAA levels was observed in both hippocampus and dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN). The decrease in DRN 5-HIAA was paralleled by a decrease in 5-HIAA/5-HT ratio in this brain area, which was significantly correlated to the animals' spatial memory performance and behavioural extinction. In addition, using middle-aged rats, a 2x2 factorial study was carried out to examine the effects of food restriction and chronic ethanol consumption on rat's performance in a spatial behavioural task and on central serotonergic parameters. None of these two treatments had a significant effect on the behavioural and biochemical parameters assessed, with the exception of extinction index, which was significantly affected by ethanol consumption. Long-term ethanol ameliorated the impairment in behavioural flexibility caused by aging. In conclusion, long-term ethanol consumption may have a role in protecting against age-related deficit in behavioural extinction. Moreover, the present results also indicate that DRN serotonergic system is involved in spatial memory and behavioural extinction.
