29. Coupling agent-based modelling and life cycle assessment for a behaviour-driven evaluation of SAEVs

Abstract

Shared Automated Electric Vehicles (SAEVs) are poised to revolutionize future transportation. However, potential drawbacks, including increased vehicle usage and the projected shorter vehicle lifespan, introduce critical factors that may impact efficiency and environmental benefits. This research introduces a framework that integrates Agent-Based Modelling (ABM) with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for a behaviour-driven SAEV assessment. The ABM simulates regional SAEV operations, informing the LCA of pre- and post-integration scenarios. Sensitivity analysis on fleet sizes, system performance metrics, and Global Warming Potential (GWP) reference values are performed. Findings demonstrate that SAEVs significantly decrease the fleet size and total travel distance by raising the average travel per vehicle. SAEVs integration yields a 75–86% daily GWP reduction without significantly compromising user experience. Over 30 years, fleet replacement needs due to inadequate fleet sizing raised GWP by 170%. Abstract

This paper explores the potential of using crowdsourcing tools, namely Google “Popular times” (GPT) as an alternative source of information to predict traffic-related impacts. Using linear regression models, we examined the relationships between GPT and traffic volumes, travel times, pollutant emissions and noise of different areas in different periods. Different data sets were collected: i) crowdsourcing information from Google Maps; ii) traffic dynamics with the use of a probe car equipped with a Global Navigation Satellite System data logger; and iii) traffic volumes. The emissions estimation was based on the Vehicle Specific Power methodology, while noise estimations were conducted with the use of “The Common Noise Assessment Methods in Europe” (CNOSSOS-EU) model. This study shows encouraging results, as it was possible to establish clear relationships between GPT and traffic and environmental performance.

Abstract

Nowadays, road traffic noise pollution still represents a considerable problem in Europe despite the efforts gathered by the scientific community, local authorities, and policymakers to tackle this issue. Research mostly focused on the development of Road Traffic Noise Models (RTNMs) and Noise Emission Models (NEMs) to forecast respectively traffic noise levels in terms of equivalent continuous sound levels and single-vehicle noise emissions in terms of sound power level. However, although the validity of such models was demonstrated in the literature, most of them are not able to deeply characterize the source in terms of motorization, engaged gear, and in idling conditions (i.e., a vehicle stopped in neutral gear with the engine running). Therefore, in this paper, an approach (based on standards and regulations) to obtain noise emission curves as a function of speed, motorization, and engaged gear, and a mathematical relationship between the sound pressure level (measured at the exhaust tube pipe) and the engine Revolution Per Minute (RPM) will be presented. Both methods are based on regressions (non-linear and linear, respectively). Two probe vehicles with different motorization (one diesel and one bi-fuel) were adopted to this end. Results showed that there exists a variability among the noise emission curves based on motorization information and engaged gear (at low speeds for manual transmission vehicles). Moreover, exhaust noise emissions, which are a function of motorization, linearly depend on RPM. All the obtained regressions are characterized by high determination coefficients (above 0.9) confirming the goodness of the presented approaches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Despite the fuel use and emission benefits of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), few studies have characterized in detail emission patterns and driving volatility profiles from HEVs in different road types under real-world driving conditions. This article examined the relationship between hot-stabilized emissions, engine variables, internal combustion engine status, roadway characteristics, and vehicular jerk types. Data were collected from a Toyota HEV subcompact on a driving route over rural, urban, and highway roads in the Aveiro region (Portugal). Driving volatility was represented by six driving styles based on combinations of acceleration/deceleration and vehicular jerk. Clustering and Disjoint Principal Component Analysis (CDPCA) was applied to extract principal components and identify specific clusters among variables. Both route type and internal combustion engine (ICE) operating behavior showed to have an impact on the distribution of vehicular jerk types. The proposed CDPCA constrained to the road sector exhibited different shapes in the clusters of the jerk types between ICE operation status. 47. Connecting the Dots between Urban Morphology and the Air Quality of Cities under a Changing Climate: A Bibliometric Analysis.

Abstract

The expected increase in urbanization changes the morphology of urban areas. These changes affect the urban environment and impact several aspects, such as climate, energy, air quality, and socioeconomic factors, among others. Therefore, it is important to lead cities towards sustainable development. The goal of this paper is to understand which domains should be considered to assess the sustainability of cities, at an environmental level and with a focus on air quality, and how those domains are connected, based on a comprehensive literature review, which resulted in 1479 articles. The results show that "Urban Climate", "Air Quality", "Urban Morphology", "Health", "Energy" and "Mobility" are the most common domains in research, and that 39% of articles only assess one domain. It is possible to understand that though 96% of articles contain up to three domains, the great majority do not assess those domains in an integrated way. There are many studies that evaluate important domains of urban areas; however, they mostly evaluate these effects in isolation, and rarely in tandem. Moving forward, it is important to understand how to best connect the most relevant domains, under an integrated multicriteria approach, thus allowing a more complete assessment of the sustainability of urban areas.
