This experimental study investigates the influence of indoor plants on three aspects of air quality in office spaces: relative humidity, indoor air temperature, and carbon dioxide concentration. Employing a Latin square design, we rotated three different treatments across three offices over six time periods. These treatments included a control (no plants), a low-volume treatment (five plants), and a high-volume treatment (eighteen plants) of Nephrolepis exaltata (Boston fern). Air quality parameters were continuously monitored at five-minute intervals using Trace Gas Analyzers. Generalised linear mixed modelling (GLMM) was employed to examine the effect of each treatment on relative humidity, indoor air temperature and CO
2 concentration. We observed a significant positive correlation between the number of indoor plants and relative humidity levels. In offices without any plants, the median relative humidity was 29.1%. This increased to 38.9% in offices with 5 plants and further to 49.2% in offices with 18 plants. However, we did not find significant associations between the number of indoor plants and indoor air temperature or corrected CO2 concentration. Our research provides support for the use of indoor plants to increase relative humidity, which can have health benefits in dry climates, but does not provide support for using indoor plants to regulate indoor air temperatures or CO2 concentration in office environments. Physics - Geophysics - Abstract
We report palaeointensity estimates obtained from three Oligocene volcanic sections from the Kerguelen Archipelago (Mont des Ruches, Mont des Tempetes, and Mont Rabouillere). Of 402 available samples, 102 were suitable for a palaeofield strength determination after a preliminary selection, among which 49 provide a reliable estimate. Application of strict a posteriori criteria make us confident about the quality of the 12 new mean-flow determinations, which are the first reliable data available for the Kerguelen Archipelago. The Virtual Dipole Moments (VDM) calculated for these flows vary from 2.78 to 9.47 10e22 Am2 with an arithmetic mean value of 6.15+-2.1 10e22 Am2. Compilation of these results with a selection of the 2002 updated IAGA palaeointensity database lead to a higher (5.4+-2.3 10e22 Am2) Oligocene mean VDM than previously reported, identical to the 5.5+-2.4 10e22 Am2 mean VDM obtained for the 0.3-5 Ma time window. However, these Kerguelen palaeointensity estimates represent half of the reliable Oligocene determinations and thus a bias toward higher values. Nonetheless, the new estimates reported here strengthen the conclusion that the recent geomagnetic field strength is anomalously high compared to that older than 0.3 Ma.

- Abstract
This document is a summary of the report "What Makes Great Teaching". It argues that improved teacher development will positively impact on pupil attainment, particular those from disadvantaged backgrounds. "Developing Teachers" presents five policy recommendations which have been signed by 17 of Britain's leading headteachers (who, in November, 2014 attended a Washington DC summit on professional development with colleagues from ten countries jointly organised by the Sutton Trust and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation). Recommendations include the following: (1) Establishing a strong entitlement for all teachers and school leaders to professional development backed by a College of Teaching and a revitalised National College for School Leadership; (2) Placing greater trust in teachers and increasing their autonomy; (3) Use of evidence to improve standards; (4) Encouraging and incentivising collaboration between schools; and (5) A more developmental approach to accountability including an inspection system that encourages innovation rather than focusing on narrow grades and rankings. The report also presents practical case studies of professional development in schools around the world, and a discussion of how to make time for professional development and reflections on the challenges for school leaders in struggling schools. Links to key resources are provided. "Rubric for assessing trust and transformational leadership practice" can be viewed in the Annex.

28. What Makes Great Teaching? Review of the Underpinning Research
- Author

- Abstract
This report reviews over 200 pieces of research to identify the elements of teaching with the strongest evidence of improving attainment. It finds some common practices can be harmful to learning and have no grounding in research. Specific practices which are supported by good evidence of their effectiveness are also examined and six key factors that contribute to great teaching are identified. The report also analyses different methods of evaluating teaching including: using "value-added" results from student test scores; observing classroom teaching; and getting students to rate the quality of their teaching. The two factors with the strongest evidence of improving pupil attainment are: (1) teachers' content knowledge, including their ability to understand how students think about a subject and identify common misconceptions; and (2) quality of instruction, which includes using strategies like effective questioning and the use of assessment. Specific practices which have good evidence of improving attainment include: (1) challenging students to identify the reason why an activity is taking place in the lesson; (2) asking a large number of questions and checking the responses of all students; (3) spacing-out study or practice on a given topic, with gaps in between for forgetting; and (4) making students take tests or generate answers, even before they have been taught the material. Common practices which are not supported by evidence include: (1) using praise lavishly; (2) allowing learners to discover key ideas by themselves; (3) grouping students by ability; and (4) presenting information to students based on their "preferred learning style". Original research questions are appended. [The Centre for Evaluation & Monitoring and Durham University contributed to the production of this report.]

38. Understanding Comparability of Examination Standards
- Author
-
Coe, Robert
- Abstract
Much of the argument about comparability of examination standards is at cross-purposes; contradictory positions are in fact often both defensible, but they are using the same words to mean different things. To clarify this, two broad conceptualisations of standards can be identified. One sees the standard in the observed phenomena of performance in relation to specified criteria (performance view); the other sees it in terms of the levels achieved by comparable candidates (statistical view). These views are quite different and can lead to contradictory conclusions. Both views are problematic conceptually and operationally. The alternative view, that standards cannot be defined but are a pure convention, is rejected as inadequate. Standards of different examinations can legitimately be compared provided there is a common construct in terms of which to compare them. There is no absolute sense in which one examination is harder than another--it depends on the construct. If such a construct is hypothesised, a validity argument must be made for interpreting those examinations as indicators of it. The practical problem of ensuring comparability across examinations may be resolved by trying to satisfy all views or agreeing to prioritise one, though both approaches will be stretched by too much variety in examination formats. If we want diversity in our examination system, we may need to consider approaches where comparability is conferred in the use and interpretation of examination grades rather than in the awarding.

39. Finding the Best Fit: The Adaptation and Translation of the Performance Indicators for Primary Schools for the South African Context

- Abstract
Reform and improvement are imperative in the current South African education system. Monitoring of school and learner achievement is an essential for establishing praxis for school improvement. Diversity of culture and South Africa's 11 official languages make it difficult to develop valid monitoring systems. Limited resources, time constraints and the need to redress neglect of large portions of the education infrastructure from the apartheid era make it problematic to develop new monitoring systems for all official languages. Adaptation and translation of existing international monitoring instruments provide alternative solutions to developing new monitoring systems. Adaptation and translation of existing instruments is a daunting process, which balances statistical analysis, translation processes and user and expert evaluations. We investigate how to balance these different processes in order to create an instrument that provides valid data for educational decisions. The processes utilised in the adaptation and translation of the vocabulary subtest of the Performance Indicators for Primary Schools (PIPS) test for the South African context are used to illustrate the complex interplay between user and expert input as well as psychometric rigour. It is hoped this paper will contribute to the development of the necessary instrument adaptation skills in South Africa.

40. School Improvement: Reality and Illusion
- Author

Coe, Robert
- Abstract
School improvement is much sought and often claimed. However, it is questionable whether overall achievement in countries such as the USA or England has improved by any significant amount over thirty years. Several school improvement programmes have been claimed as successful, but evaluations, even where they exist, are generally poor: based on the perceptions of participants, lacking any counterfactual or reporting selectively. Accounts of improvement in individual schools are numerous, but are inevitably selective; the attribution of causality is problematic and knowledge of the conditions under which such phenomena are likely to be replicated is limited. School effectiveness research also has yet to identify specific strategies with clear causal effects. In short, many claims of school improvement are illusory. Nevertheless, there are some improvement strategies that are well-defined, feasible and robustly shown to be effective. In future, we need greater clarity and agreement about what constitutes success. Evaluation must be taken more seriously, and its results treated more critically.

41. Choosing 'in' Schools: Locating the Benefits of Specialisation
- Author

- Abstract
Recent policy in England has suggested that educational outcomes will be raised if schools specialise in particular subjects. In contrast, calls for the reform of 16-19 education have suggested that these outcomes will be improved if students become less specialised in their studies. At present, there is a limited evidence base from which to judge these arguments. In particular, we do not know the extent to which students' achievements in 16-19 education are higher when they choose subjects which play to their perceived strengths. We also do not know whether students are more likely to choose to study subjects taught by more effective departments. That is, outcomes may be affected by the relative strengths of students or departments in circumstances where there is freedom to choose. In this paper we provide evidence of the existence and strength of these relationships. This evidence suggests that reducing the scope within schools for specialisation or competition will reduce average student attainment and these effects ought to be taken into account when evaluating alternative curriculum policies. 42. Increasing within-School Competition: A Case for Department Level Performance Indicators?

- Abstract
The authors investigate the size and stability of departmental effects in English secondary schooling during a period in which extensions to parental choice and annual publication of school performance tables had significantly increased competitive pressures on schools. Their database of nearly 450 English secondary schools enables them to investigate departments in terms of both their unadjusted and value-added average students' performance in national examinations. They are interested in the nature of within-school competition and concentrate upon two subjects, geography and history, which were optional subjects in each of these schools. In general, they find that relative departmental performance varies significantly over time and that few departments manage to persistently out-perform the other subject in their school. They conclude that given the instability of relative departmental performance, publication of department-level performance indicators is unlikely to generate strong incentives for departments to raise their effort and effectiveness. - Abstract
The performance of departments has been largely neglected in previous studies of subject choice in secondary schools. This is a significant omission because analysis at departmental level enables a fuller assessment of the effects of competition and specialisation on pupil performance. This paper examines relationships between both absolute and value-added measures of departmental performance and the likelihood of students being entered for examination in a subject. It examines these relationships with reference to four option subjects: French, German, Geography and History. It utilises data from an Economic and Social Research Council-funded study which examined trends and patterns in departmental effectiveness using a sample of 664 schools which participated in the Yellis monitoring system for a minimum of five years during the period 1995-2002. 44. Comparability of GCSE Examinations in Different Subjects: An Application of the Rasch Model
- Author
-
Coe, Robert
- Abstract
The comparability of examinations in different subjects has been a controversial topic for many years and a number of criticisms have been made of statistical approaches to estimating the "difficulties" of achieving particular grades in different subjects. This paper argues that if comparability is understood in terms of a linking construct then many of these problems are resolved. The Rasch model was applied to an analysis of data from over 600,000 candidates who took the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) examinations in England in 2004. Thirty-four GCSE subjects were included in the final model, which estimated the relative difficulty of each grade in each subject. Other subjects failed to fit, as did the fail grade, U. Significant overall differences were found, with some subjects more than a grade harder than others, though the difficulty of a subject varied appreciably for different grades. The gaps between the highest grades were on average twice as big as those between the bottom grades. Differential item functioning (DIF) was found for male and female candidates in some subjects, though it was small in relation to variation across subjects. Implications of these findings for various uses of examination grades are discussed. (Contains 3 tables, 2 figures and 7 notes.)

45. Socioeconomic Background, Gender and Subject Choice in Secondary Schooling
- Author
-
Davies, Peter, Telhaj, Shqiponje, Hutton, David, Adnett, Nick, and Coe, Robert
- Abstract
Background: The desirable extent of curriculum choice to be offered to students remains a central policy question in England. Previous studies of the impact of the introduction of a common curriculum for 14-16 year olds in 1988 have suggested that some gender differences were narrowed as a result. These studies examined subject choice either in terms of students' "ex ante" preferences in advance of enrolling for subjects or in terms of "ex post" aggregate data on examination entries. There is some conflict between the evidence provided by these two sources. One possible reason for this conflict could be that existing "ex post" evidence does not examine the interaction between student characteristics or the effect of school-level variables. Purpose: This study aims to identify effects of social class and gender on subject choice for 14-16 year olds in England over and above effects that are attributable to students' ability. Effects that operate at school level are separated from those that act at the level of the individual. Sample: The sample is drawn from the schools that participated in the Yellis system for providing analysis of the examination results achieved by 16-year-old students. The sample of 664 schools and 112,412 16-year-old students was selected by including all schools who had participated in the Yellis project for at least five years during the period 1994-2002. All of the sample schools were participating in the scheme in 1998, the year for which a cross-sectional analysis is presented in this paper. Design and methods: Statistical (probit) models are used to investigate effects of student and school characteristics on the probability of a student entering for examination in each of six option subjects: Business Studies, French, Geography, German, History and Home Economics. The models take account of levels in the data and identify interactions between the student characteristics. Results: After taking prior ability into account socioeconomic background effects, taken together, exert a stronger effect than gender on the likelihood of entering for examination in history. Socioeconomic background effects are also stronger in the case of business studies. The effect of socioeconomic background is stronger for females than for males. There are also strong social effects operating through the characteristics of the cohort of students at the school. The proportion of students eligible for free school meals has a significant effect on the probability of entering for examination in geography, German or History. Conclusions: In so far as the results from this study can be compared with previous research they support the conclusions of previous "ex post" studies rather than "ex ante" studies in terms of gender preferences in subject choice. This might suggest some difficulty in generalising from the kind of "ex ante" data gathered previously. The evidence of the effect of socioeconomic background at individual and school level suggests that current policy aiming to increase subject choice within and between schools will deepen differences between the subjects studied by students from different socioeconomic backgrounds. 46. Effects of Schooling on Reading Performance, Reading Engagement, and Reading Activities of 15-Year-Olds in England

- Abstract
This article reports the findings of an analysis into the effect of one year's schooling for 15-year-olds in England on reading performance, reading engagement, and reading activities. The analyses were done on PISA 2000 data by applying a regression discontinuity approach within a multilevel framework. The effect of schooling is estimated as the difference between students from two consecutive grades minus the effect of age. A remarkably modest effect on reading performance was found, and no significant effects were found for the other two measures. The effect on reading performance was found to be somewhat stronger in schools with disadvantaged student populations. (Contains 5 tables, 2 figures, and 3 notes.)

47. Thirty Years on--A Large Anti-Flynn Effect? The Piagetian Test Volume & Heaviness Norms 1975-2003
- Author
-
Shayer, Michael, Ginsburg, Denise, and Coe, Robert
- Abstract
Background: "Volume & Heaviness" was one of three Piagetian tests used in the CSMS survey in 1975/76. However unlike psychometric tests showing the Flynn effect--that is with students showing steady improvements year by year requiring tests to be restandardized--it appeared that the performance of Y7 students has recently been getting steadily worse. Aims: A sample of schools sufficiently large and representative was chosen so that the hypothesis of worsening performance could be tested, and estimated quantitatively. Sample: Sixty-nine Y7 school year groups containing pupil data on the "Volume & Heaviness" test and the University of Durham CEM Centre MidYIS test were located giving a sample of 10, 023 students covering the years 2000 to 2003. Method: Regression of the students' school mean on "Volume & Heaviness" on the schools' mean MidYIS 1999 standardized score, and computing the regression at MidYS = 100 allows comparison with that found in 1976. Results: The mean drops in scores from 1976 to 2003 were boys = 1.13 and girls = 0.6 levels. A differential of 0.50 standard deviations in favour of boys in 1976 had completely disappeared by the year 2002. Between 1976 and 2003 the effect-size of the drop in the boys' performance was 1.04 standard deviations, and for girls was 0.55 standard deviations. Conclusion: The idea that children leaving primary school are getting more and more intelligent and competent--whether it is viewed in terms of the Flynn effect, or in terms of government statistics on performance in Key Stage 2 SATS in mathematics and science--is put into question by these findings.

- Abstract
Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI), with funding from Gatsby Technical Education Projects (GTEP), ran the "Enabling Access to Further Mathematics" project from 2000 to 2003. This pilot project was designed to provide AS- and A-level students with additional opportunities to study Further Mathematics, through the use of distance-learning materials. This was in response to the dramatic decline in the numbers of students taking Further Mathematics over the last four decades. An independent evaluation of the project was commissioned by GTEP, and this paper describes the methodology of the evaluation and its findings. In addition to highlighting the benefits of the project for the students and institutions involved, the paper discusses how the project could be developed in the future, based on the issues and difficulties raised in the evaluation.

49. Effectiveness of Consultation on Student Ratings Feedback: A Meta-Analysis
- Author

Penny, Angela R. and Coe, Robert
- Abstract
Consultation on student ratings is recognized as an important strategy to support university teachers in learning from student ratings feedback. However, there is little evidence to suggest which practices and strategies are most important for successful consultation. As the use of student ratings increases, such evidence becomes increasingly important. The authors of this article performed an exploratory meta-analysis to determine the effects of various consultation strategies and to identify the conditions under which consultative feedback is most effective in improving teaching effectiveness. The results indicated that the various approaches to consultation are not equally effective. The authors suggest that only with use of certain consultation strategies might the benefits of support with student ratings feedback be maximized. (Contains 3 tables and 3 figures.)
