Background: Work ability consists in the balance between employee’s capabilities and work demands. It can be measured by the Work Ability Index, a validated questionnaire that has been used in Europe since 1980s. This study is the first evaluating work ability among dock workers, a workforce which carries out complex activities requiring physical and mental engagement (night shifts, irregular shifts, constant demand for attention and concentration and significant physical effort). Objective: It was hypothized that the high strain level affecting this peculiar job may lead to a decrease in work ability. The aim of the study was to assess work ability and investigate if and how much not work-related factors, such as psycho-emotional state, lifestyle, health conditions and socio-demographic aspects, can interfere with it. Psycho-diagnostic protocol consisted of 6 questionnaires, chosen because of fast and effective data collection aiming to worker compliance and simple interpretation of results. Method: A total of 105 workers was engaged in different companies involved in port services. A protocol consisting of 6 questionnaires has been applied individually before the work shift: Work Ability Index (WAI), Effort-reward imbalance questionnaire (ERI), Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety (HAM-A), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Results: Work ability resulted excellent in 60 subjects and good in 37. No significant correlation between individual characteristics and work ability was found. Our results indicated that work ability was negatively related with emotional states, particularly with anxiety. Univariate and multivariate linear regression model for work ability, have shown a statistically significant correlation with BDI, HAM-A and ERI questionnaires’ results. Conclusion: Our results showed that WAI is a useful tool for routine occupational health surveillance. The association of work ability with psychosocial factors suggests that actions at the workplace adopted by occupational physicians in order to prevent a reduction in working capacity, should have a multidimensional approach evaluating not only individual lifestyle, but also mood states., Mediterranean Journal of Clinical Psychology, Vol 9, No 2 (2021)

BACKGROUND The Onduo virtual care program for people with type 2 diabetes (T2D) includes a mobile app, remote lifestyle coaching, connected devices, and telemedicine consultations with endocrinologists for medication management and prescription of real-time continuous glucose monitoring (RT-CGM) devices. In a previously described 4-month prospective study of this program, adults with T2D and baseline glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) ≥8.0% to ≤12.0% experienced a mean HbA1c decrease of 1.6% with no significant increase in hypoglycemia. OBJECTIVE The objective of this analysis was to evaluate medication optimization and management in the 4-month prospective T2D study. METHODS Study participants received at least 1 telemedicine consultation with an Onduo endocrinologist for diabetes medication management and used RT-CGM intermittently to guide therapy and dosing. Medication changes were analyzed. RESULTS Of 55 participants, 48 (87%) had a medication change consisting of a dose change, addition, or discontinuation. Of these, 15 (31%) participants had a net increase in number of diabetes medication classes from baseline. Mean time to first medication change for these participants was 36 days. The percentage of participants taking a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist increased from 25% (12/48) to 56% (n=27), while the percentages of participants taking a sulfonylurea or dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitor decreased from 56% (n=27) to 33% (n=16) and 17% (n=8) to 6% (n=3), respectively. Prescriptions of other antidiabetic medication classes including insulin did not change significantly. CONCLUSIONS The Onduo virtual care program can play an important role in providing timely access to guideline-based diabetes management medications and technologies for people with T2D. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an auto-immune disease that destructs insulin-producing pancreatic beta-cells within the islets of Langerhans. The incidence of T1D has tripled over the last decades, while the pathophysiology of the disease is still largely unknown. Currently, there is no cure for T1D. The only treatment option consists of blood-glucose regulation with insulin injections and intensive monitoring of blood glucose levels. In recent years, perturbations in the ecosystem of the gut microbiome also referred to as dysbiosis, have gained interest as a possible contributing factor in the development of T1D. Changes in the microbiome seem to occur before the onset of T1D associated auto-antibodies. Furthermore, rodent studies demonstrate that administering antibiotics at a young age may accelerate the onset of T1D. This review provides an overview of the research performed on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, interventions, and possible treatment options in the field of the gut microbiome and T1D.

BACKGROUND The Onduo virtual diabetes clinic (VDC) for people with type 2 diabetes (T2D) combines a mobile app, remote personalized lifestyle coaching, connected devices, and live video consultations with board-certified endocrinologists for medication management and prescription of real-time continuous glucose monitoring (RT-CGM) devices for intermittent use. OBJECTIVE This prospective single-arm study evaluated glycemic outcomes associated with participation in the Onduo VDC for 4 months. METHODS Adults aged ≥18 years with T2D and a baseline glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) of ≥8% to ≤12% were enrolled from 2 primary care centers from February 2019 to October 2019. Participants were asked to engage at ≥1 time per week with their care team and to participate in a telemedicine consultation with a clinic endocrinologist for diabetes medication review. Participants were asked to use a RT-CGM device and wear six 10-day sensors (total 60 days of sensor wear) intermittently over the course of 4 months. The primary outcome was change in HbA1c at 4 months from baseline. Other endpoints included change in weight and in RT-CGM glycemic metrics, including percent time 250 mg/dL. Changes in blood pressure and serum lipids at 4 months were also evaluated. RESULTS Participants (n=55) were 57.3 (SD 11.6) years of age, body mass index 33.7 (SD 7.2), and 40% (22/55) female. HbA1c decreased significantly by 1.6% (SD 1%; P9.0% (n=19), HbA1c decreased by 1.2% (SD 0.6%; PPP=.002), from 65.4% (SD 23.2%) to 75.5% (SD 22.7%), which was equivalent to a mean increase of 2.4 hours TIR per day. Percent time 181-250 mg/dL and >250 mg/dL decreased by 7.2% (SD 15.4; P=.005) and 3.0% (SD 9.4; P=.01), respectively. There was no change in percent time PP=.04 to P= CONCLUSIONS Participants in the Onduo VDC experienced significant improvement in HbA1c, increased TIR, decreased time in hyperglycemia, and no increase in hypoglycemia at 4 months. Improvements in other metabolic health parameters including weight and blood pressure were also observed. In conclusion, the Onduo VDC has potential to support people with T2D and their clinicians between office visits by increasing access to specialty care and advanced diabetes technology including RT-CGM. Herein we present a method of developing predictive models of viscosity for ionic liquids (ILs) using publicly available data in the ILThermo database and the open-source software toolkits PyChem, RDKit, and SciKit-Learn. The process consists of downloading ∼700 datapoints from ILThermo, generating ∼1200 physiochemical features with PyChem and RDKit, selecting 11 features with the least absolute shrinkage selection operator (LASSO) method, and using the selected features to train a multi-layer perceptron regressor—a class of feedforward artificial neural network (ANN). The interpretability of the LASSO model allows a physical interpretation of the model development framework while the flexibility and non-linearity of the hidden layer of the ANN optimizes performance. The method is tested on a range of temperatures, pressures, and viscosities to evaluate its efficacy in a general-purpose setting. The model was trained on 578 datapoints including a temperature range of 273.15–373.15 K, pressure range of 60–160 kPa, viscosity range of 0.0035–0.993 Pa s, and ILs of imidazolium, phosphonium, pyridinium, and pyrrolidinium classes to give 33 different salts altogether. The model had a validation set mean squared error of 4.7 × 10−4 ± 2.4 × 10−5 Pa s or relative absolute average deviation of 7.1 ± 1.3%.

HIV-positive patients suffer from higher cancer-related mortality compared to the general population. Anal cancer (AC) is considered as a rare form of neoplasm, accounting for 4% of all cancers of the lower gastrointestinal tract in the general population. Approximately 88% of AC cases are associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. This paper purpose is the diagnostic and therapeutic management of AC in HIV infect people.

Molecular recognition between peptides and metal oxide surfaces is a fundamental process in biomineralization, self-assembly, and biocompatibility. Yet, the underlying driving forces and dominant mechanisms remain unclear, bringing obstacles to understand and control this process. To elucidate the mechanism of peptide/surface recognition, specifically the role of serine phosphorylation, we employed molecular dynamics simulation and metadynamics-enhanced sampling to study five artificial peptides, DDD, DSS, DpSpS, DpSpSGKK, and DpSKGpSK, interacting with two surfaces: rutile TiO2 and quartz SiO2. On both surfaces, we observe that phosphorylation increases the binding energy. However, the interfacial peptide conformation reveals a distinct binding mechanism on each surface. We also study the impact of peptide sequence to binding free energy and interfacial conformation on both surfaces, specifically the impact on the behavior of phosphorylated serine. Finally, the results are discussed in context of prior studies investigating the role of serine phosphorylation in peptide binding to silica.

The introduction of ART had a significant impact on PWLH survival. The incidence of AIDS-defining cancers has decreased, but the risk is still higher than general population. Women living with HIV have a high prevalence of HPV infection and related disease, including cervical cancer. HIV-related risk factors, such as immunodeficiency and chronic persistence of infection play an important role in its pathogenesis. HPV vaccine, screening and early antiretroviral therapies, are recommended to reduce the risk of developing cervical cancer. In this review, we considered the studies published about cervical cancer in PLWHA that we found performing a research on PUBMED (Bethesda MD, USA) with the following research terms “Papillomavirus”, “Cervical Cancer”, “HIV infection”, “Screening”, “Vaccination” with the aim to point out the main aspects of cervical cancer in HIV infected women, its management and prophylaxis.
