The Galileo mission to Jupiter discovered magnetic signatures associated with hidden sub-surface oceans at the moons Europa and Callisto using the phenomenon of magnetic induction. These induced magnetic fields originate from electrically conductive layers within the moons and are driven by Jupiter's strong time-varying magnetic field. The ice giants and their moons are also ideal laboratories for magnetic induction studies. Both Uranus and Neptune have a strongly tilted magnetic axis with respect to their spin axis, creating a dynamic and strongly variable magnetic field environment at the orbits of their major moons. Although Voyager 2 visited the ice giants in the 1980s, it did not pass close enough to any of the moons to detect magnetic induction signatures. However, Voyager 2 revealed that some of these moons exhibit surface features that hint at recent geologically activity, possibly associated with sub-surface oceans. Future missions to the ice giants may therefore be capable of discovering sub-surface oceans, thereby adding to the family of known ocean worlds in our solar system. Here, we assess magnetic induction as a technique for investigating sub-surface oceans within the major moons of Uranus. Furthermore, we establish the ability to distinguish induction responses created by different interior characteristics that tie into the induction response: ocean thickness, conductivity, and depth, and ionospheric conductance. The results reported here demonstrate the possibility of single-pass ocean detection and constrained characterization within the moons of Miranda, Ariel, and Umbriel, and provide guidance for magnetometer selection and trajectory design for future missions to Uranus.

To date, analyses of magnetic induction in putative oceans in Jupiter's large icy moons have assumed uniform conductivity in the modeled oceans. However, the phase and amplitude response of the induced fields will be influenced by the increasing electrical conductivity along oceans' convective adiabatic temperature profiles. Here, we examine the amplitudes and phase lags for magnetic diffusion in modeled oceans of Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. We restrict our analysis to spherically symmetric configurations, treating interior structures based on self-consistent thermodynamics, which account for variations in electrical conductivity with depth in convective oceans (Vance et al., 2018). The numerical approach considers tens of radial layers. The induction response of the adiabatic conductivity profile differs from oceans with uniform conductivity based on the ice-ocean interface or the mean value of the adiabatic profile by more than 10% in many cases. In addition, we consider the generation of induced magnetic fields by oceanic fluid motions that might be used to probe the ocean flows directly (e.g., Chave, 1983; Tyler, 2011; Minami, 2017). Assuming turbulent convection (Soderlund et al., 2014), we find that these signals can dominate induction signal at low latitudes, which underscores the need for spatial coverage in magnetic induction investigations. Based on end-member ocean compositions (Zolotov, 2008; Zolotov & Kargel, 2009), we quantify the residual magnetic induction signals that might be used to infer the oxidation state of Europa's ocean and to investigate stable liquids within and under high-pressure ices in Ganymede and Callisto. It is shown that attempts to accurately deduce the magnetic penetration depth of overdoped BaFe_{1.82}Co_{0.18}As2 single crystals by transverse-field muon spin rotation (TF-muSR) are thwarted by field-induced magnetic order and strong vortex-lattice disorder. We explain how substantial deviations from the magnetic field distribution of a nearly perfect vortex lattice by one or both of these factors is also significant for other iron-based superconductors, and this introduces considerable uncertainty in the values of the magnetic penetration depth obtained by TF-muSR., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

The doping of charge carriers into the CuO2 planes of copper oxide Mott insulators causes a gradual destruction of antiferromagnetism and the emergence of high-temperature superconductivity. Optimal superconductivity is achieved at a doping concentration p beyond which further increases in doping cause a weakening and eventual disappearance of superconductivity. A potential explanation for this demise is that ferromagnetic fluctuations compete with superconductivity in the overdoped regime. In this case a ferromagnetic phase at very low temperatures is predicted to exist beyond the doping concentration at which superconductivity disappears. Here we report on a direct examination of this scenario in overdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 using the technique of muon spin relaxation. We detect the onset of static magnetic moments of electronic origin at low temperature in the heavily overdoped nonsuperconducting region. However, the magnetism does not exist in a commensurate long-range ordered state. Instead it appears as a dilute concentration of static magnetic moments. This finding places severe restrictions on the form of ferromagnetism that may exist in the overdoped regime. Although an extrinsic impurity cannot be absolutely ruled out as the source of the magnetism that does occur, the results presented here lend support to electronic band calculations that predict the occurrence of weak localized ferromagnetism at high doping., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures
