Vertebral column is made of 33 vertebrae named as cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral and coccygeal vertebrae. Axial skeleton comprises of skull and vertebral column. 12 pairs of cranial nerves and 31 pairs of spinal nerves exit from the central nervous system which control the entire body. Malformations or fusion of vertebrae could be one of the etiologies of nerve compression syndromes. Vital structures emerge out through intervertebral foramina extending from cervical to coccygeal vertebrae. Occipitalisation of atlas, the first cervical vertebra is one of the emergencies leading to wide spectrum of presentations like chronic neck pain or foramen magnum syndrome or unconscious state due to compression of medulla oblongata. During routine examination of skull bones while teaching, one skull was found to exhibit assimilation of atlas. Photographs were captured and compared with normal skull. Thorough examination revealed incomplete occipitalisation of atlas. The anterior arch was completely fused but the posterior arch was bifid showing a split. The styloid process on right side seemed to be long and very close leading to compression of structures of styloid apparatus in addition. On observation, it was found to be a male skull. Fusion of vertebrae may be a congenital anomaly due to maldevelopment of somites in forming vertebrae. Skeletal element of caudal 4th occipital somite forms the occipital bone and when it is fused with the proximal 1st cervical somite leads to occipitalisation of atlas. Acquired conditions like atlantoaxial subluxation, chiari malformations or cervical vertebral fusion or foramen magnum abnormalities have been associated with assimilation of atlas. The present study reports occipitalisation of atlas which is incomplete with a bifid posterior arch. Prevalence of such anomalies may form the differential diagnosis of chronic headache or myelopathies.

Study Design: Animal case control study.Purpose: To create a simple, reproducible disc degeneration model for mouse coccygeal vertebrae. Overview of Literature: Back pain due to disc degeneration is probably the most common problem encountered in neurosurgical practice. An easily reproducible animal model for disc degeneration will help in understanding its pathophysiology, and serve as a platform for examining various therapeutic options.Methods: A total of 18 mice were divided into injured (n=12) and non-injured (n=6) groups. The disc height index (DHI%) at coccygeal 4–5 level was measured by computed tomography (CT) scan for all mice. Coccygeal 4–5 discs of the injury group were injured using a 32G needle fixed to a novel tool and confirmed by CT. The non-injury group underwent no procedure. DHI% was measured by CT at 2-, 4-, and 6-week post-injury, and all mice tails were sectioned for histopathology grading of disc degeneration at the respective time intervals.Results: The injured group showed significant variation in DHI% at 2, 4, and 6 weeks, whereas there was no change in the noninjured group. Histopathologic evaluation with Safranin O stain showed a worsening of the disc degeneration score at 2, 4, and 6 weeks in the injured group, but in the non-injured group there was no change. Percutaneous needle injury technique with our novel tool provided 100% accuracy and uniform degeneration.Conclusions: A simple, easily reproducible mouse model for disc degeneration was created using a simple, cost-effective, novel tool and technique, its advantage being high precision and user friendly.

Background The case report describes a rare congenital anomaly, crossed fused renal ectopia (CFRE), with coexistence of two other abnormalities – atypical portal vein and coccygeal vertebrae malformation in a domestic cat. The concomitance of those 3 congenital defects has not been described previously. Case presentation An 8-month-old female, domestic cat suffering from chronic diarrhea was referred to the diagnostic imaging unit. The patient showed no other clinical symptoms. An abdominal ultrasonographic examination was performed in order to evaluate the condition of abdominal organs, particularly the gastrointestinal tract. The ultrasound examination showed an ectopic duplex kidney at instead of kidneys in their typical location. Computed tomography (CT) with angiographic phase and excretory urography was requested to evaluate the condition of the kidneys and ureters. The final diagnosis was CFRE, atypical portal vein and coccygeal deformation in an asymptomatic cat with no changes in renal function and normal blood parameters. Conclusions Crossed fused renal ectopia is a rare congenital anomaly and is easily detectable by an abdominal ultrasonographic examination and CT, which allows more complete assessment of both anatomical relations and secretory function of the kidney. The occurrence of CFRE, abnormal portal vein and spinal malformation in a clinically healthy patient is the evidence that congenital malformations may simultaneously involve various, not directly related structures and systems, without significant influence on blood and urine parameters. Thus the most useful tool in the evaluation of the morphological and functional changes is the diagnostic imaging, especially contrast enhanced CT. Our results show that renal fusions should be considered in the differential diagnosis of caudal abdominal masses.

International audience; An 8-y-old, intact female degu (Octodon degus) was presented with a slow-growing mass on the tail tip. The mass was completely removed by partial caudectomy. Histologically, the last coccygeal vertebra was replaced by a lobulated neoplasm composed of large clear polygonal cells embedded in a myxoid alcian blue-positive matrix with highly vacuolated cytoplasm (physaliferous cells) and intracytoplasmic periodic acid-Schiff-positive granules. The neoplasm exhibited the morphologic features of a "classic" chordoma of humans, which is 1 of 3 distinct chordoma subtypes. Immunohistochemistry revealed dual expression of cytokeratin AE1/AE3 and vimentin, consistent with a diagnosis of chordoma. Chordomas are uncommon slow-growing neoplasms in humans and animals, arising from notochordal remnants. Depending on their subtype and location, they can have a high local recurrence rate and metastatic risk. Chordoma should be included in the differential diagnosis of a soft tissue mass on the tail of a degu, similar to the clinical situation in ferrets.

Background: Indian eagle owl known to rotate their necks up to 270 degrees in either direction without injuring their vessels running below the head thereby without cutting off blood supply to their brains. The vertebral column in birds carry peculiar features like higher number of cervical vertebrae due to long mobile neck, lumbar and sacral vertebrae fused together giving rigidity which aid in flight. The extensive fusion of vertebral column posterior to the neck provides the required rigidity in the trunk region, this inflexibility feature might reduce weight, as it avoids the need for extensive musculature to maintain a streamlined and rigid body posture during flight. The current study aimed to study the vertebral column of Indian eagle owl in order to understand the anatomical adaptations related to this species. Methods: The specimens were procured from three Indian eagle owl brought for post mortem examination during the year 2019 to the Department of Veterinary Pathology, Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Veterinary Education and Research, Puducherry. After completion of the post-mortem examination the carcass was collected and macerated as per the standard technique and various measurements on vertebral column bones were measured using vernier calliper. Result: The study revealed that vertebral column of Indian eagle owl consisted of 14 cervical vertebrae, 7 thoracic vertebrae, 13 to 14 lumbar vertebrae fused with sacral vertebrae forming synsacrum and 7 coccygeal vertebrae. The hypapophyses of the 14th cervical vertebra and first two thoracic vertebrae were trifid in nature specific feature seen in Indian eagle owl. The vertebral column had characteristics features of hypapophyses, transverse process, pneumatic foramen and neural spine which enable the owl to adapt for head rotation and various task involving vertebrae.

Background Digital thermal imaging is a physiologic, non-invasive, contactless, and non-radiating diagnostic tool that can assess a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including hip osteoarthritis (HOA). Fifty police working dogs were evaluated to compare the dorsoventral (DV) and lateral (LT) thermographic images in dogs with naturally occurring bilateral HOA. A DV, and left and right lateral LT images were obtained for each animal in six different moments. They were positioned standing in a symmetrical upright position for the DV view. Each image included the area from the last lumbar to the first coccygeal vertebrae. Each LT view was set with the greater trochanter in the centre of the image. Images were taken with a thermographic camera from a distance of 60 cm. Mean and maximal temperatures were recorded, analyzed with ANOVA, dependent samples t-test, and Spearman correlation, with P Results Nine hundred images were considered, collected from 30 males and 20 females, with a mean age of 6.5 ± 2.2 years and bodyweight of 26.7 ± 5.3 kg. The overall value recorded on the DV view was 25.3º ± 9.1 and 28.4º ± 2.8 on the lateral view. These were significantly different (P Conclusions This is the first study that describes digital thermography's diagnostic use to evaluate working dogs with naturally occurring HOA, comparing two different views. Future studies should address each one's value in the diagnosis and response to treatment of this disease.

Perosomus Elumbis (PE) is a rare congenital disorder characterized by absence of caudal spine (lumbar, sacral, and coccygeal vertebrae). Here, we present the first reported case of PE in a rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta), and relate our findings to those described in other species.

Background: Human tails are rare entities and can be classified as true tails and pseudotails. True tails are composed of adipose tissue, connective tissue, muscles, vessels, nerves and mechanoreceptors whereas pseudotails may be an anomalous prolongation of the coccygeal vertebra, lipoma, teratoma, chondrodystrophy or parasitic fetus. Case Report: A 3-month-old male baby had a tail like appendage since birth which was gradually increasing in size. After complete workup, an elective resection was done under general anesthesia. Postoperative recovery was uneventful. Conclusion: Surgical excision of the tail is the ultimate and may be the only surgical intervention required in these patients.

This study aimed to provide a preliminary description of the sagittal and transverse plane kinematics of the thoracolumbar spine of Mangalarga Marchador (MM) horses performing the marcha batida gait, led in-hand. We evaluated the pattern of angular movement and the mean amplitude of six specific angles. An optoelectronic system was used for 3D kinematic analysis (19 cameras, 250 Hz). They were positioned around the horses and an acquisition volume of 16 × 4.8 × 3 meters was used. Eight retroreflective markers were fixed on the spine of the animals over thoracic vertebrae 8 (T8), 12 (T12), 15 (T15) and 18 (T18); over the lumbar vertebrae 3 (L3) and 5 (L5); over the 1st sacral vertebra (S1); and over the 1st coccygeal vertebra (CD1). Five trials, led from a halter, with three complete gait cycles were evaluated for each marcha batida horse. The 3D coordinates of the markers were filtered with a second-order, low-pass, Butterworth filter (10 Hz). Six angles: T8-T12-T15, T12-T15-T18, T12-T18-L5, T15-T18-L3, T18-L3-L5, and L3-S1-CD1 were obtained and projected in the sagittal (Flexion and Extension) and transverse (Lateral bending) planes. We calculated, for each angle to represent the spine movements, the mean and standard deviation of the range of motion (ROM, difference between the maximum and minimum values in a stride cycle). In order to describe the movement over an average stride cycle we calculated the mean curve of angle variation. The T8-T12-T15 angle presented the largest ROM in the transverse plane, while in the sagittal plane the T8-T12-T15, T12-T15-T18 and T12-T18-L5 angles presented the largest ROMs. The L3-S1-CD1 angle (lumbosacral region) presented the lowest ROM in both planes. A reduced flexion close to a neutral spine was found, predominantly during the diagonal support and in the cranial thoracic region. At the same time, the thoracolumbar region remains in an extension which is highlighted in the lumbosacral region. During the change of the support phase, the cranial thoracic region moved from a flexion to a slight extent, and the thoracolumbar region was flexed which is emphasized in the lumbosacral region. The lateral bending of the spine followed the direction of the diagonal supports. The small amplitude in the latero-lateral and dorsoventral movements of the thoracolumbar spine of MM horses during the marcha batida gait could contribute to the smooth and natural sensations experienced when riding in this gait. The lower mobility of these angles should be considered during the clinical examination of marcha batida-gaited horses.

Study DesignA retrospective, cross-sectional study of 213 patients who presented for abdominal computed tomography (CT) scans to assess coccygeal morphology in the Indian population.PurposeThere have been relatively few studies of coccygeal morphology in the normal population and none in the Indian population. We aimed to estimate coccygeal morphometric parameters in the Indian population.Overview of LiteratureCoccygeal morphology has been studied in European, American, Korean, and Egyptian populations, with few differences in morphology among populations.MethodsA retrospective analysis of 213 abdominal CT scans (114 males and 99 females; age, 7–88 years; mean age, 47.3 years) was performed to evaluate the number of coccygeal segments, coccyx type, sacrococcygeal and intercoccygeal fusion and subluxation, coccygeal spicules, sacrococcygeal straight length, and sacrococcygeal and intercoccygeal curvature angles. Results were analyzed for differences in morphology with respect to sex and coccyx type.ResultsTypes I and II coccyx were the most common. Most subjects had four coccygeal vertebrae; 93 subjects (43.66%) had partial or complete sacrococcygeal fusion. Intercoccygeal fusion was common, occurring in 193 subjects. Eighteen subjects had coccygeal spicules. The mean coccygeal straight length was 33.8 mm in males and 31.5 mm in females; the mean sacrococcygeal curvature angle was 116.6° in males and 111.6° in females; the mean intercoccygeal curvature angle was 140.94° in males and 145.10° in females.ConclusionsType I was the most common coccyx type in our study, as in Egyptian and Western populations. The number of coccygeal vertebrae and prevalence of sacrococcygeal and intercoccygeal fusion in the Indian population were similar to those in the Western population. The mean coccygeal straight length and mean sacrococcygeal curvature angle were higher in males, whereas the intercoccygeal curvature angle was higher in females. Information on similarities and differences in coccygeal morphology between different ethnic populations could be useful in imaging and treating patients presenting with coccydynia.

Bone grafting is a resource widely used by the veterinary orthopedic surgeon for reconstruction of affected limbs for a total loss of a cortical bone segment. However, the absence of bone bank and the presence of autografts with insufficient structural dimensions are feared setbacks in choosing this resource. Because of this, this study aimed to investigate the structural characteristics of coccygeal vertebra suggesting it as a possible alternative to bone autograft. For this, were used eight, ex vivos, dogs, with each dog donor of two samples of each bone grafts following groups: cranial-dorsal portion of the right and left iliac crest (group A), 10th fragment of the right and left ribs (group C), 4th and 5th coccygeal vertebrae (group Co) and diaphyseal portion of the right and left tibia (group T), resulting in 16 samples per group. Such grafts underwent computed tomography for measurement of cancellous bone and cortical bone and biomechanical test to evaluate the resistance. The coccygeal vertebra offered good bone strength and showed a high percentage of cancellous bone, conferring to it, in addition to probable large power osteogenic also structural support, A enxertia óssea é um recurso muito utilizado pelo ortopedista veterinário para reconstrução de membros acometidos por perda total de segmento ósseo cortical. Entretanto, a ausência de banco de ossos e a presença de autoenxertos com dimensões estruturais insuficientes são contratempos temidos na escolha deste recurso. Devido a isso, este trabalho teve como objetivo investigar as características estruturais da vértebra coccígea sugerindo-a como possível alternativa para autoenxertia óssea. Para tal, foram utilizados oito cães ex vivos, sendo cada cão doador de duas amostras de cada um dos seguintes grupos de enxertos ósseos: porção crânio-dorsal da asa do ílio direita e esquerda (grupo A), fragmento da 10ª costela direita e esquerda (grupo C), 4ª e 5ª vértebras coccígeas (grupo Co) e porção diafisária da tíbia direita e esquerda (grupo T), resultando em 16 amostras por grupo. Tais enxertos foram submetidos a exame de tomografia computadorizada para mensuração de osso esponjoso e osso cortical e teste biomecânico para avaliação da resistência. A vértebra coccígea ofereceu boa resistência óssea e apresentou elevado percentual de osso esponjoso, conferindo a ela, além de provável alto poder osteogênico, também de suporte estrutural

BACKGROUND CONTEXT The effects of using off-label recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein (rhBMP)-2 for interbody fusion are controversial. Although animal models of posterolateral fusion are well-established, establishing animal models to validate the safety and efficacy of interbody fusion is difficult, which may contribute to the inconsistent clinical results. PURPOSE To develop a novel animal model of interbody fusion in rat coccygeal vertebrae without destroying bony endplates. STUDY DESIGN An experimental animal study. METHODS Forty-five male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent coccygeal interbody fusion without violating vertebral endplates. The animals were divided into three different groups based on the materials that were implanted into the interbody space (1) allogeneic iliac bone (IB) alone (IB group), (2) IB and 3 µg of rhBMP-2 (BMP low-dose group), or (3) IB and 10 µg of rhBMP-2 (BMP high-dose group). Fusion rates were investigated using microcomputed tomography 6 weeks after the operation. The incidence of adverse events, including soft-tissue swelling, delayed wound healing, osteolysis, and ectopic bone formation were evaluated. The total number of adverse events (using the adverse event score) in each group and the swelling ratio (calculated using the surgical site tissue volume [TV; TV on postoperative day 1/preoperative TV]) were also evaluated. RESULTS The fusion rates in the BMP low- and high-dose groups (33.3% and 46.7%) were not significantly different, but both were significantly higher than that in the IB group (0%) (p=.042 and .006, respectively). Significant differences in the incidence of osteolysis, adverse event scores, and swelling ratios were observed only between the BMP high-dose and IB groups (p=.043, .006 and .014, respectively). CONCLUSIONS We developed a novel rat model of interbody fusion in which the vertebral endplates were not violated, reflecting the normal clinical setting. rhBMP-2 use increased the fusion rate, but a higher dose of rhBMP-2 did not lead to a higher fusion rate than that for low-dose rhBMP-2; conversely, it led to an increase in the occurrence of adverse events. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE This novel rat model of coccygeal interbody fusion that preserved bony endplates has clinical significance for validating the effectiveness of biologics or bone graft substitutes before clinical trial.

Congenital vertebral malformations are common findings on diagnostic imaging of the vertebral column in "screw-tailed" brachycephalic dogs. The aims of this study were to evaluate the prevalence and anatomical characteristics of lumbosacral congenital vertebral malformations in French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, and Pugs presenting for problems unrelated to spinal disease, as well as possible associations with the degree of tail malformation, lumbosacral intervertebral disc herniation, or spondylosis deformans. In this retrospective cross-sectional study, CT scans of vertebrae L6 to S3 and of the coccygeal vertebrae were reviewed for type of congenital vertebral malformations (hemivertebrae, block vertebrae, lumbosacral transitional vertebrae, and spina bifida), lumbosacral intervertebral disc herniation, lumbosacral spondylosis deformans, and degree of tail malformation. In 76 (51.0%) of the 149 included dogs (53 French Bulldogs, 37 English Bulldogs, and 59 Pugs) at least one type of congenital vertebral malformations was found, with lumbosacral transitional vertebrae being the most common (34.2%). There was a significantly higher prevalence of lumbosacral transitional vertebrae (54.2%) and lower prevalence of hemivertebrae (1.7%) in Pugs compared to English (13.5% and 24.3%, respectively) and French Bulldogs (26.4% and 32.0%, respectively). Tail malformation was significantly more severe in dogs with evidence of hemivertebrae. Congenital vertebral malformations are a common finding in the lumbosacral vertebral column of French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, and Pugs. These anatomical variances need to be considered when interpreting diagnostic studies and when planning for neurosurgical and neurodiagnostic procedures. Furthermore, this study suggests a possible association between the degree of tail malformation and lumbosacral hemivertebrae.

The most commonly used classification system for caudal appendages (aka human tails) dates from the 1980s and classifies appendages (tails) as either true tails or pseudotails. Advances in neuroimaging since the 1980s, however, as well as an ever-increasing number of reported cases, have made this system outdated. Sacrococcygeal eversion is a condition in which the distal sacral and coccygeal vertebrae are curved in a retroverted rather than anteverted direction. It can give rise to one type of caudal appendage. Sacrococcygeal eversion has never been associated with spinal cord tethering in any previously published reports. We reviewed all cases of caudal appendage encountered by pediatric neurosurgeons at Children’s Hospital Colorado since 2000 in which the appendage would be classified as a true tail by the most commonly used system mentioned above. We also reviewed cases of sacrococcygeal eversion encountered since 2000 by the same group of pediatric neurosurgeons. We searched the hospital electronic medical record system for additional appendages using the terms “caudal appendage” and “persistent human tail.” We found 9 “true” tails (as classified by the most commonly used system). All 9 were associated with tethering or possible tethering of the spinal cord and 6 were associated with a low-lying conus medullaris. There were 8 cases of sacrococcygeal eversion, including 2 associated with Apert or Pfeiffer syndrome and fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR2) mutations; these have previously been reported. There was a single case of sacrococcygeal eversion associated with Goldenhar or Turner syndrome; the former was associated with a potentially tethering lesion. Four cases of sacrococcygeal eversion not associated with any known syndrome were also found; two of these were associated with tethering or potentially tethering lesions. Most so-called true tails are likely cutaneous markers for spinal dysraphism and spinal cord tethering and are not remnants of the embryonic human tail. Sacrococcygeal eversion can be associated with spinal cord tethering. Based on our cases, and on review of the literature, we devised a five-category classification system for caudal appendages: (1) soft-tissue caudal appendages, (2) bony caudal appendages, (3) bony caudal prominences, (4) true tails, and (5) “other” caudal appendages.

Objective: Current study aimed for documenting a rare case in buffalo calves in Egypt about embryogenesis anomalies followed by dystocia. Material and methods: The stillborn calf was preserved using Elnady technique. The twin was radio-graphed in ventrodorsal position and several digital images were taken due to large size of the twin and were stitched together using Adobe Photoshop. The preserved twin specimen was kept in a wooden glass cabinet at the Anatomy Museum, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Cairo University with a booklet described the case and a video CD for dystocia operation steps in cows and buffalos. Results: The external features of the twin were classified as dicephalus, tetrabrachius, Parapagus, and bipus. Radiographic study showed that the twin had two vertebral columns that converged at the lumbosacral region to come adjacent to each other with absence of sacrum and coccygeal vertebrae. The trunk cavities showed two sets of heart and lung, two stomachs; left one in the abdominal cavity and the right one in thoracic cavity. The two duodenum fused together to form one set of intestine terminated in persistent cloaca with the two ureters originated from the single set of two kidneys. It had one fused liver received the two umbilical veins and had two gall bladders. Conclusion: The present study recommended the preservation of rare specimens using Elnady technique for long term to facilitate students interaction with one of the rarest cases in buffalo that causes dystocia. Pfirrmann grading can be used to assess intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD). There is growing evidence that IVDD is not simply a structural disorder but also involves changes to the substructural characteristics of the disc. Whether Pfirrmann grade can accurately represent these micro-nano environmental changes remains unclear.We aimed to assess the micro-nano structural characteristics of the degenerative disc to provide more specific biomechanical information than the Pfirrmann score.A micro- and nano-level structural analysis of degenerative discs of rat tails.In this study, 12-week-old adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided randomly into five groups: control (no intervention to the intervertebral disc of the tail) and four intervention groups that all had caudal vertebrae immobilized using a custom-made external device to fix four caudal vertebrae (Co7-Co10) but with variable subsequent compression of Co8 and Co9 for 2, 4, 6, or 8 weeks. Magnetic resonance imaging detection of rat coccygeal vertebrae was conducted at each time node of the experiment, and the T2 signal intensity and disc space were evaluated. Animals were euthanized and the caudal vertebrae were harvested for further analysis. Histopathology, glycosaminoglycan (GAG) content, histologic score, end plate structure, and elastic modulus of the intervertebral discs were evaluated.IVDD was observed at an earlier Pfirrmann grade (Pfirrmann II) under the microscope. With an increase in Pfirrmann grade to III-V, the pore structure of the bony end plate changed significantly and the number of pores decreased gradually. Furthermore, the total GAG content of the nucleus pulposus decreased from an average of 640.33 μg GAG/ng DNA in Pfirrmann grade I to 271.33 μg GAG/ng DNA in Pfirrmann grade V (p .0001). At the early stage of clinical degeneration of intervertebral discs (Pfirrmann grades II and III), there were significant changes in mechanical properties of the outer annulus fibrosus compared with the inner layer (p .05). Further, the fibril diameters exhibited significant changes compared with the control group (p .05).Our study found that the Pfirrmann grading system combined with intervertebral disc micro-nano structural changes more comprehensively reflected the extent of disc degeneration. These data may help improve our understanding of the pathogenesis and process of clinical disc degeneration.

Summary: Background: There is a close relationship between the vertebral trabecular morphology and the condition of the associated disc. Objective: The relationship between disc degeneration and vertebral trabecular inhomogeneity is unclear. This study aimed to analyse the regional changes of vertebral trabecular morphology after disc degeneration. Methods: Thirty male Sprague–Dawley rats were randomly assigned to five groups. Group 1 served as an experimental group for the assessment of disc degeneration induced by needle puncture. Group 2 served as a sham group for trabecular morphology analysis. In Group 3, rats had their tail bent between the eighth and tenth coccygeal vertebrae. In Group 4, the tail of rats was bent with a compression load of 4.5 N. In Group 5, rats first underwent disc degeneration induced by a needle puncture before their tail was bent with a compressive load of 4.5 N. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed on all groups, and histological examination was performed on rodents from Group 1. The ninth coccygeal vertebrae of rats from Groups 2–5 were scanned by Micro-computed tomography. Trabecular morphologic changes were assessed in the concave and convex regions by bone volume fraction, trabecular number, trabecular thickness and trabecular separation. Results: Vertebral trabecular morphology in the concave region improved significantly, whereas the convex region was of significantly lower trabecular morphologic parameters with disc degeneration. The difference in trabecular morphologic parameters between the convex and concave regions increased significantly after disc degeneration. Conclusion: Disc degeneration promotes regional inhomogeneity in the vertebral trabecular morphology, with the convex region of the vertebrae having the worse trabecular bone morphology than the concave region. The translational potential of this article: Our study indicates that disc degeneration promotes regional inhomogeneity in the vertebral trabecular morphology. Regional variations in trabecular microarchitecture are helpful to predict vertebral fragility. This may help to elucidate the mechanisms by which disc degeneration contributes to vertebral fracture. Summary A 17-year-old Appaloosa mare presented to the emergency service for acute, traumatic, partial amputation of the tail at the level of the ninth coccygeal vertebra. The patient did not have tail or anal tone and did not respond to sharp stimulation of skin in the perineal region. Two grade 1 rectal tears were found during rectal palpation. Radiographs revealed dislocation of the second (Cd2) and third (Cd3) caudal vertebrae. The patient was treated with antibiotics, an anti-inflammatory drug and stall confinement. The ninth caudal vertebra was surgically removed to facilitate closure of skin over the wound. When the mare was discharged after 7 days of hospitalisation, she had regained partial sensation of the perineum and partial function of the internal and external anal sphincters. At re-evaluation one year following injury, the mare was able to move her tail laterally and had regained sensation of her perineum and tail; however, she still was unable to lift her tail.

Context : The sacrum generally is composed of five vertebrae fused to form a triangular bony mass with four pairs of sacral foramina. The sacrum may contain six vertebrae, by development of an additional sacral element or by incorporation of the fifth lumbar or first coccygeal vertebrae produces five pairs of sacral foramina. Sacralization is entirely undiagnosable without an X-ray examination and rarely present any symptoms. Sacra of six bodies with five pairs of sacral foramina are found frequently in the department of anatomy during routine study of bones. Material and Methods: The present study was performed on 218 (two hundred eighteen) adult human dry sacra of unknown sex. The study samples were distributed into male and female sex groups by discriminant function analysis The study was descriptive type and was conducted in the department of Anatomy, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka, from January 2011 to December 2011. The sacrum was examined to assess the number of its vertebral segments and sacral foramina. Result : A typical sacrum consisting of 5 segments with four pairs of sacral foramina was observed in 78.9 % cases, while sacralisation with five pairs of sacral foramina was seen in 21.10 % of cases. Conclusion: The number of vertebrae in sacrum may be increased by fusion of fifth lumbar vertebra or first coccygeal vertebra producing sacralization. The knowledge of significant number of sacralization is necessary in managing spinal surgery and for diagnostic and therapeutic purpose in low back pain. We evaluated the relationship between stature and the length of the sacrum and coccyx using multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) and derived regression equations for stature estimation in the modern Japanese population. Two hundred and sixteen Japanese subjects (110 males and 106 females) who underwent postmortem computed tomography with subsequent forensic autopsy between January 2010 and August 2013 were measured. A sagittal-plane image of the sacrum and coccyx was used. Anterior sacral length (ASL) was defined as the linear distance from the anterosuperior edge of the first sacral vertebra (S1) to the anteroinferior edge of the fifth sacral vertebra (S5), and posterior sacral length (PSL) was defined as the linear distance from the posterosuperior edge of S1 to the anteroinferior edge of S5. Anterior sacrococcygeal length (ASCL) was defined as the linear distance from the anterosuperior edge of S1 to the anteroinferior edge of the last coccygeal vertebra (LCV), and posterior sacrococcygeal length (PSCL) was defined as the linear distance from the posterosuperior edge of S1 to the anteroinferior edge of the LCV. The correlation between stature and each parameter was evaluated by simple regression analysis using Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients. Each parameter was significantly and positively correlated with stature among both males and females. Cadaver stature (CS, cm)=0.39×PSL (mm)+123.70 [Corrected] provided the most accurate stature prediction (R=0.507, SEE=5.83 cm) in males. CS (cm)=0.56×PSCL (mm)+85.29 provided the most accurate stature prediction (R=0.659, SEE=6.68 cm) in females. We conclude that sacral/sacrococcygeal length measured with MDCT is a potentially useful tool for stature estimation, particularly in cases where better predictors such as the long bones are not available.

Animal models of intervertebral disc degeneration play an important role in clarifying the physiopathological mechanisms and testing novel therapeutic strategies. The objective of the present study is to describe a simple animal model of disc degeneration involving Wistar rats to be used for research studies. Disc degeneration was confirmed and classified by radiography, magnetic resonance and histological evaluation. Adult male Wistar rats were anesthetized and submitted to percutaneous disc puncture with a 20-gauge needle on levels 6-7 and 8-9 of the coccygeal vertebrae. The needle was inserted into the discs guided by fluoroscopy and its tip was positioned crossing the nucleus pulposus up to the contralateral annulus fibrosus, rotated 360° twice, and held for 30 s. To grade the severity of intervertebral disc degeneration, we measured the intervertebral disc height from radiographic images 7 and 30 days after the injury, and the signal intensity T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. Histological analysis was performed with hematoxylin-eosin and collagen fiber orientation using picrosirius red staining and polarized light microscopy. Imaging and histological score analyses revealed significant disc degeneration both 7 and 30 days after the lesion, without deaths or systemic complications. Interobserver histological evaluation showed significant agreement. There was a significant positive correlation between histological score and intervertebral disc height 7 and 30 days after the lesion. We conclude that the tail disc puncture method using Wistar rats is a simple, cost-effective and reproducible model for inducing disc degeneration.

Musculoskeletal pain can be caused by disorders of bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, bursa, or in combination. The human spine is formed by 30 vertebrae including: 7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacrum (fused together), and 1 coccygeal vertebrae along with intervertebral discs. The spine protects the spinal cord and issues 31 pairs of spinal nerves that innervate trunk and all extremities. The brain and spinal cord comprise the “central nervous system” and both innervate the whole body.

Background: The reliability and success of caudal epidural anesthesia depends on anatomic variations of sacral hiatus (SH) as observed by various authors. SH is an important landmark during caudal epidural block (CEB).The purpose of the present study was to clarify the morphometric characteristics of the SH in human Egyptian dry sacra and pelvic radiographs and identification of nearest ony landmarks to permit correct and uncomplicated caudal epidural accesses. Methods: The present study was done on 46 human adult Egyptian dry sacra. The maximum height, midventral curved length, and maximum breadth of each sacrum were measured and sacral and curvature indices were calculated. According to sacral indices, sacra were divided into 2 groups (22 male and 24 female sacra). SH was evaluated in each sacrum according to its shape, level of its apex, and base according to sacral and coccygeal vertebrae, length, anteroposterior (AP) diameter at its apex, and transverse width at its base. Linear distances were measured between the apex of SH and second sacral foramina, right and left superolateral sacral crests. The distance between the 2 superolateral sacral crests also was measured. Results: The most common types of SH were the inverted U and inverted V (in male) and inverted V and dumbbell shaped (in female). Absent SH was observed in male group only. The most common location of SH apex was at the level of S4 in all groups of dry sacra and S3 in all groups of lumbosacral spine radiographs, whereas S5 was the common level of its base. The mean SH length, transverse width of its base, and AP diameter of its apex were 2.1±0.80, 1.7±0.26, and 0.48±0.19 cm. Female sacra showed narrower SH apex than male. The distance between the S2 foramen and the apex of the SH was 4.1±1.14, 3.67±1.21, and 4.48±1.01 cm in total, female and male sacra, respectively. Conclusion: Sacrum and SH showed morphometric variations in adult Egyptians. The equilateral triangle is an important guide to detect SH easily and increases the success rate of CEB. Insertion of a needle into the SH for caudal block is suggested to be done at its base to avoid the anatomic variations of its apex.

Study design A case report. Objective To report on an interesting case of a symptomatic human pseudo tail in a 7-year-old girl, who had a lordotic deformity of the coccyx due to partial segmentation. Summary of background data Caudal appendages are uncommon congenital malformations classified into two categories, true tails and pseudo tails, usually treated by surgical resection. Protrusion of the coccygeal vertebrae is considered the most common cause of pseudo tail. Methods Summary of the surgical management, as well as an x-ray film of the coccyx 8 years postoperatively, is presented. Results Total resection of the coccyx was successfully performed and all preoperative complaints of the patient were resolved shortly after the surgery. Follow-up 8 years later revealed regrowth of a small coccygeal bone, in normal alignment. Conclusion Segmentation failure of the coccyx vertebrae may lead to an abnormal position of the coccyx that may interfere with daily life and therefore require coccygectomy. A newly developed coccygeal bone, in normal alignment, may be present at site after several years.

The rat controls the form of its tail, from straight to curved, by contraction and relaxation of its four tail muscles. The tendons of these muscles insert on any of the cranial articular, transverse, and hemal processes of each of 24 coccygeal vertebrae (Co5-Co28). In this study, we isolated for the four coccygeal muscles each muscular fascicle segment inserting on any process of the coccygeal vertebrae. We measured the length and weight of all muscular fascicles and tendons, and then divided all muscular fascicles into four groups based on their insertion: Co5-Co10, Co11-Co16, Co17-Co22, and Co23-Co28. Moreover, we used soft X-ray imaging to investigate the geometrical relationship between neighboring coccygeal vertebrae. Additionally we carried out serial sectioning at the sacral and caudal portions, and traced the course of the tendons of coccygeal muscles from their origin to the Co4 level. We discuss which muscles and tendons play important roles when coccygeal vertebrae bend along and rotate around the longitudinal axis.

Humans do not have a tail, but we have four rudimentary coccygeal vertebrae. This study considers several issues pertaining to fusion of the coccyx to the sacrum, including prevalence, sexual differences, effect on pelvic size, and obstetrical and evolutionary implications. Previous research on sacral-coccygeal fusion has reported: (1) lower prevalence in females than males, (2) prevalence increases with age, (3) range in prevalence among 13 samples from 0 to 72%, and (4) obstetrical complications. This study uses a sample of 2,354 American skeletons of known sex, age 20 years and older to ascertain prevalence of sacral-coccygeal fusion and to evaluate some of its correlates. Results show that the sexes do not differ in prevalence of sacral-coccygeal fusion for five of seven decades of life, but that prevalence does increase with advancing age-from 24 to 47% from the third to eighth decades of life in females. Pelvimetric analysis of 132 females shows that those with sacral-coccygeal fusion have a shorter posterior sagittal diameter of the outlet compared to those without fusion; more than half of those with sacral-coccygeal fusion have an obstetrically contracted posterior sagittal diameter. Shortening of the posterior sagittal diameter is important, because its conjoint occurrence with a narrow subpubic arch may result in an obstetrically inadequate outlet. This study concludes that sacral-coccygeal fusion is a principal contributor to the evolution of sexual dimorphism in sacral angulation, which is a determinant of the length of the posterior sagittal diameter of the outlet.

Interventional procedures for coccydynia (coccygodynia) are limited. This is a case report of long-term improvement following radiofrequency ablation (RFA) within the 1st intercoccygeal disk. Case Presentation: A 44-year-old female presented with a 1 year history of coccydynia following a fall. Examination under fluoroscopy localized her pain at the disk between the 1st and 2nd coccygeal vertebrae. Provocation with needle entry reproduced the patient's pain, and the 1st intercoccygeal disk was injected with 40 mg of methylprednisolone. This gave the patient excellent relief for about 3 weeks. The procedure was repeated at 4 weeks, providing with the same response. Decision was then made to proceed with RFA. Her symptoms were reproduced in response to stimulation at 50 Hz with 0.9 V, and stimulation at 2 Hz at 2 V did not result in any motor stimulation. RFA was then carried out at 70°C for 80 seconds, followed by injection of 20 mg of methylprednisolone. The patient's Numeric Rating Scale pain score decreased from 9/10 to 3/10 after the RFA. She had about 70% relief for about 6 months. Discussion: There is evidence that intercoccygeal disks can be a source of coccydynia. Immunohistochemistry has shown mechanoreceptors in intercoccygeal disks, and coccygeal discography has been shown to reproduce coccygeal pain. Intercoccygeal disk injection is described as a therapeutic option in the literature. Because various RFA techniques have been successfully used for intervertebral diskogenic pain, the decision was made to attempt RFA at the 1st intercoccygeal disk with resultant significant long-term improvement.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo descrever o caso de um felino, que desde o nascimento apresentou atresia anal, ausência de cauda e malformação dos membros pélvicos. Ao exame radiográfico, pôde-se observar presença de agenesia da sétima vértebra lombar, sacro e vértebras coccígeas, espinha bífida, meningocele, hiperflexão dos joelhos e desvio valgo dos tarsos, diagnosticando-se agenesia sacrococcígea associada à atresia anal.

Human spine consists of 33 vertebrae. 7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 fused sacral vertebrae and 4 fused coccygeal vertebrae. These vertebrae generally increase in size from cervical to lumbar. Similar to the size, weight bearing capacity of the vertebrae is also higher. This weight bearing capacity of the vertebrae depends on both material properties (Bone mineral density) and geometric properties (connectivity of bone elements). Both are inter-related and together called as mechanical properties of vertebrae. When there is a structural change in the alignment of vertebrae due to congenital or neuromuscular or degenerative, it affects the mechanical properties of vertebrae. In this study we are going to deal with the mechanical properties of vertebrae affected by spinal deformities like Scoliosis and Kyphosis.

Ordinal regression and animal threshold analyses were used to estimate the influence of fixed effects and heritabilities on the number and grade of hemivertebrae, as well as the number of coccygeal vertebrae, in 105 French bulldogs. The fixed effects of sex, year and month of birth were not significant (P > 0.05). The prevalence of hemivertebrae was 0.85 with a slightly higher prevalence in females compared with males. Heritability estimates for the number and grade of hemivertebrae were 0.58 and 0.53, respectively. The number of coccygeal vertebrae showed a heritability estimate of 0.35. In addition, the number of coccygeal vertebrae was negatively correlated with the number and grade of hemivertebrae. The prevalence of hemivertebrae could increase if dogs with shorter tails are preferentially selected for breeding purposes.

A radiographical study of a cat mummy from the Egyptian collection of the National Archeological Museum in Parma, Italy was carried out in order to evaluate the content and to describe how cats were wrapped and mummified. The mummy contained the complete skeleton of a 4–5-month-old cat. Radiology revealed the position of the cat’s body; it was wrapped to occupy the smallest space possible. In order to better position the cat, the ribs of the thorax were compressed cranio-caudally and the fore limbs were then positioned very close to the thorax. The hind limbs were flexed close to the lumbar spine and the tibio-tarsal joints were subluxated to allow the repositioning of the tarsal, metatarsal and phalanx bones cranio-caudally near the tibiae. A coccygeal vertebra was fractured in order to reposition the tail as close as possible to the body. Atlanto-occipital subluxation and a fracture/hole was present in the occipital region of the skull: whether this was made for draining skull contents as a mummification process and/or to euthanase the cat remains open for discussion.

The objective of this study was to investigate the morphology and morphometry of the coccyx on pelvic magnetic resonance imaging in asymptomatic individuals among Turkish adults. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted retrospectively on the pelvic magnetic resonance images of 456 adult patients without a history of trauma in the coccyx region. The coccygeal vertebrae count, number of bone segments, and intercoccygeal and sacrococcygeal joint fusions were determined from the sagittal plane images. In addition, the length and angles (the sacrococcygeal angle, intercoccygeal joint angle, and sacrococcygeal joint angle) were measured. Statistical Analysis Used: Data were analyzed using the T-test or Mann-Whitney U-test, the ANOVA, or Kruskal-Wallis tests, and the chi-square test was used for the categorical variables. Results: The coccyx is formed by four, five, or three vertebrae in a decreasing ratio. The coccyx is composed of one to five bone segments; one bone segment was found in 2.8% of the cases. Intercoccygeal joint fusions been observed predominantly in the last intercoccygeal joint, with or without sacrococcygeal joint fusion. The coccyx was found to be longer in adult males than in adult females. The sacrococcygeal angle might be anteverted or retroverted. Conclusion: The findings are contrary to the conventional knowledge in that the vertebrae shaping the coccyx were completely fused and consisting of a single bone in very few cases. Better understanding of the anatomical variation of the coccyx may be useful for clinicians evaluating patients presenting with conditions in the coccygeal region.

Kocaoğlu C, Kocaoğlu Ç, Akkoyun İ, Karaniş İE. A case report with sacral appendage: Is it accessory penis or human tail? Turk J Pediatr 2017; 59: 335-337. Lumbo-sacro-coccygeal appendages are very rare congenital anomalies. It is difficult to say that they are a evolutionary inheritance (tail) from our ancestors or an anomaly (pseudotail) occuring during embrional development. If it is a true tail, this lesion contains adipose and connective tissue, striated muscle, blood vessel and nerves, and is covered by skin. However, if this lesion is a pseudotail, it may be an anomalous prolongation of the coccygeal vertebra, lipoma, teratoma, condrodystrophy or parasitic fetus. We present an infant with a sacral appendage resembling a penis, and its clinical and pathologic differential diagnosis and management are discussed based on literature. Sacral appendages, such as asaccessory penis or human tail, are treated through simple surgical excision. However, patients must be carefully evaluated regarding teratoma and spinal cord pathology.

Murine lumbar and coccygeal (tail) regions of spines are commonly used to study cellular signaling of age-related disc diseases, but the tissue-level changes of aging intervertebral discs and vertebrae of each spinal region remain unclear. Furthermore, the impact of aging lumbar and coccygeal discs on Wnt/β-catenin signaling, which is putatively involved in the catabolism of intervertebral discs, is also unclear. We compared disc/vertebrae morphology and mechanics and biochemical composition of intervertebral discs from lumbar and coccygeal regions between young (4–5 mo) and old (20–22 mo) female C57BL/6 mice. Center intervertebral disc height from both regions was greater in old discs than young discs. Compared with young, old lumbar discs had a lower early viscous coefficient (a measure of stiffness) by 40%, while conversely old coccygeal discs were stiffer by 53%. Biochemically, old mice had double the collagen content in lumbar and coccygeal discs of young discs, greater glycosaminoglycan in lumbar discs by 37%, but less glycosaminoglycan in coccygeal discs by 32%. Next, we compared Wnt activity of lumbar and coccygeal discs of 4- to 5-mo and 12- to 14-mo TOPGAL mice. Despite the disc-specific changes, aging decreased Wnt signaling in the nucleus pulposus from both spinal regions by ≥64%. Compared with young, trabecular bone volume/tissue volume and ultimate force were less in old lumbar vertebrae, but greater in old coccygeal vertebrae. Thus intervertebral discs and vertebrae age in a spinal region-dependent manner, but these differential age-related changes may be uncoupled from Wnt signaling. Overall, lumbar and coccygeal regions are not interchangeable in modeling human aging.

The authors evaluated the reliability of a rat-tail replantation model Eleven male adult Sprague-Dawley rats were involved. The tails were completely amputated 3 to 6 cm distal to the base. They were then replanted in the following order: fixation of the coccygeal vertebrae; suturing of tendons; anastomosis of the artery; anastomosis of the two dominant veins (or one of them); and skin closure. Tails were inspected daily for 14 postoperative days for color, capillary refill, skin consistency and wound condition. Subsequently, ultrasound Doppler inspection and angiography were carried out to observe the patency of the vessels. All replanted tails were pink, viable, and had normal capillary refill and appearance. Complete survival was achieved. Doppler flow imaging and angiography demonstrated patency of the vessels. This rat-tail replantation is a reliable and reproducible experimental model of microvascular anastomosis. Crucial steps in the procedure are presented.

This is the first report, to our knowledge, of the full characterization of the musculature of the mouse tail. Bicipital muscles form a major part of the tail musculature. The tail tendons originate with fusiform muscle from the dorsal and ventral lumbo-sacro-coxal regions and are inserted into the coccygeal vertebrae (extrinsic muscles of the tail). Each coccygeal vertebra has short muscles that terminate on the adjacent vertebrae (intrinsic muscles of the tail). The short muscle and its corresponding tail tendon are joined, thereby forming a bicipital muscle that is inserted into the coccygeal process. A geographical correspondence is strictly maintained between the origin of the tendon in the lumbo-sacro-coxal region and the insertion of the bicipital muscle in the coccygeal vertebrae. In other words, the organization of the tail musculature is based upon repetitions of fusion between the extrinsic and intrinsic muscles at each coccygeal vertebral level. This design is referred to as the metameric arrangement of the bicipital muscles. The organization, arrangement and function of muscles in the tail have features in common with those muscles in the digits of the human extremities.

In August 2007, a 4-year-old, intact, female Domestic Shorthair cat was examined for a mass on the tip of the tail. Histological examination performed after apical caudectomy revealed a neoplasm affecting the distal part of the last coccygeal vertebra. The neoplasm consisted of lobules of physaliferous cells surrounding cartilaginous tissue and a central core of trabecular bone. A diagnosis of chondroid chordoma was made based on histomorphological features and immunohistochemical results. Chondroid chordoma has been previously reported in humans, rats, ferrets, and mink. To the authors' knowledge, chondroid chordoma has not been reported in cats. Neither recurrence nor metastasis was reported 7 months after surgery.

Perosomus elumbis is an occasionally found congenital anomaly of unknown etiology and is characterized by partial or complete agenesis of lumbar, sacral and coccygeal vertebrae and ankylosis of the hindlimbs. A 2-day-old female Holstein calf presented nearly normal forelimbs but flexure and ankylosis of the hindlimbs. The vertebrae and pelvic malformations and agenesis were radiographed and then necropsied. Mild ankylosis of the hindlimbs, absence of cauda equina, left scoliosis in state of fusion of T11 and T12 and complete fusion of L4 and L5, narrowed pelvic canal and misshapen ilium were confirmed. However, abnormal development or agenesis was not observed in the urogenital and intestinal system in this calf.

A male deformed Korean native calf was examined macroscopically. The deformed calf had no caudal vertebral columns from 5th lumbar vertebra, sacrum and coccygeal vertebrae. The spinal cord was terminated in the vertebral foramen of the 3rd lumbar vertebra. The cervical vertebrae had scoliosis and the 3rd and 4th cervical vertebrae were fused. The 2nd and 3rd lumbar vertebrae were fused and the left and right transverse processes of the 4th lumbar vertebra articulated with ala of the ilium. The rectum was greatly expanded by the imperforate anus and a rectourethral fistula was formed between the rectum and urethra. The deformed calf was recorded as a first documentation of sacrocaudal agenesis confirmed in a Korean native calf.

Study design An analysis of the histologic changes in intervertebral discs after percutaneous reinsertion of the nucleus pulposus in rats. Objective To devise a way to delay further disc degeneration resulting from spinal deformity and the adverse effects of various treatments. Summary of background data The role of the nucleus pulposus of the intervertebral disc described by many investigators has not been fully clarified. Methods Disc herniation was induced in the tails of 112 Wistar rats, using a fixation device between the 5th and 8th coccygeal vertebrae. After percutaneous nucleotomy at coccygeal vertebrae 5-6 and 6-7, fresh nucleus pulposus, cryopreserved nucleus pulposus, or an artificial substitute was inserted into the intervertebral disc at coccygeal vertebrae 5-6. Two, 4, or 8 weeks after reinsertion, disc sections from each coccygeal level were studied histopathologically. Results In the groups with reinsertion of fresh or cryopreserved nucleus pulposus, degenerative changes of the disc with the reinserted nucleus at coccygeal vertebrae 5-6 were milder than those of the disc without reinsertion at coccygeal vertebrae 6-7. However, no apparent benefit from reinsertion was observed in the group with artificial substitutes. Conclusions Early reinsertion of the nucleus pulposus (fresh or cryopreserved) delays degeneration of such disc materials as the anulus fibrosus, endplate, and remaining nucleus pulposus.

The possible effects of radiofrequency (RF) radiation on prenatal development has been investigated in mice. This study consisted of RF level measurements and in vivo experiments at several places around an “antenna park.” At these locations RF power densities between 168 nW/cm2 and 1053 nW/cm2 were measured. Twelve pairs of mice, divided in two groups, were placed in locations of different power densities and were repeatedly mated five times. One hundred eighteen newborns were collected. They were measured, weighed, and examined macro- and microscopically. A progressive decrease in the number of newborns per dam was observed, which ended in irreversible infertility. The prenatal development of the newborns, however, evaluated by the crown-rump length, the body weight, and the number of the lumbar, sacral, and coccygeal vertebrae, was improved. ObjectiveTo explore the effect of scraping therapy on the Interleukin-1 (IL-1) levels of rats with lumbar disc herniation (LDH).MethodsFifty male rats were devided into a blank group (A), a sham operation group (B), a model group (C), a scraping group (D), and a drug group (E). The rats in the group B were treated with sham operation, and groups C, D and E were made into the LDH model by operation. After operation, group C were treated with no interventions, D were given scraping and E were fed with azathioprine. Then the IL-1 levels of different groups were detected by enzyme-linked immuno sorbent assay method. And the transplanted coccygeal vertebra discs were observed by pathological section.ResultsThe IL-1 levels in the groups C, D, and E were significantly higher than those in the groups A and B (all P0.05). Moreover, pathological section indicated that immuno-inflammatory response was hardly found in coccygeal vertebra discs in the groups A and B, while local immuno-inflammatory responses of the groups D and E were much lighter than that of the group C.ConclusionScraping therapy could inhibit the immuno-inflammatory responses in the rats with LDH caused by transplantation of autologous nucleus pulposus.

Summary The retractor clitoridis muscle originates from the coccygeal vertebrae in the cow, ewe, goat and mare, and from the anal musculature in the sow. It terminates at the base of the clitoris. In all the species considered, a vegetative innervation was found. This was represented by isolated or grouped ganglion cells. Nervous sensitive supply was also present. This was represented by Pacinian, Pacinian-like and Golgi-Mazzoni's corpuscles, and by Krauses's end bulbs. A notable difference was found in the amount and type of these receptors. They were numerous in the sow, ewe and goat, and rare in the cow and mare. Additionally, in the sow, ewe and goat, all the above mentioned receptors were found, while, in the cow and mare, only Pacinian and Pacinian-like corpuscles occurred. The morphology of these receptors was described and hypotheses were made concerning their probable functional role.

A validation study examined the accuracy of a purpose-built single photon absorptiometry (SPA) instrument for making on-farm in vivo measurements of bone mineral density (BMD) in tail bones of cattle. In vivo measurements were made at the proximal end of the ninth coccygeal vertebra (Cy9) in steers of two age groups (each n = 10) in adequate or low phosphorus status. The tails of the steers were then resected and the BMD of the Cy9 bone was measured in the laboratory with SPA on the resected tails and then with established laboratory procedures on defleshed bone. Specific gravity and ash density were measured on the isolated Cy9 vertebrae and on 5-mm2 dorso-ventral cores of bone cut from each defleshed Cy9. Calculated BMD determined by SPA required a measure of tail bone thickness and this was estimated as a fraction of total tail thickness. Actual tail bone thickness was also measured on the isolated Cy9 vertebrae. The accuracy of measurement of BMD by SPA was evaluated by comparison with the ash density of the bone cores measured in the laboratory. In vivo SPA measurements of BMD were closely correlated with laboratory measurements of core ash density (r = 0.92). Ash density and specific gravity of cores, and all SPA measures of BMD, were affected by phosphorus status of the steers, but the effect of steer age was only significant (P < 0.05) for steers in adequate phosphorus status. The accuracy of SPA to determine BMD of tail bone may be improved by reducing error associated with in vivo estimation of tail bone thickness, and also by adjusting for displacement of soft tissue by bone mineral. In conclusion a purpose-built SPA instrument could be used to make on-farm sequential non-invasive in vivo measurements of the BMD of tailbone in cattle with accuracy acceptable for many animal studies.
