TurboRVB is a computational package for {\it ab initio} Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations of both molecular and bulk electronic systems. The code implements two types of well established QMC algorithms: Variational Monte Carlo (VMC), and Diffusion Monte Carlo in its robust and efficient lattice regularized variant. A key feature of the code is the possibility of using strongly correlated many-body wave functions. The electronic wave function (WF) is obtained by applying a Jastrow factor, which takes into account dynamical correlations, to the most general mean-field ground state, written either as an antisymmetrized geminal product with spin-singlet pairing, or as a Pfaffian, including both singlet and triplet correlations. This wave function can be viewed as an efficient implementation of the so-called resonating valence bond (RVB) ansatz, first proposed by L. Pauling and P. W. Anderson in quantum chemistry and condensed matter physics, respectively. The RVB ansatz implemented in TurboRVB has a large variational freedom, including the Jastrow correlated Slater determinant as its simplest, but nontrivial case. Moreover, it has the remarkable advantage of remaining with an affordable computational cost, proportional to the one spent for the evaluation of a single Slater determinant. The code implements the adjoint algorithmic differentiation that enables a very efficient evaluation of energy derivatives, comprising the ionic forces. Thus, one can perform structural optimizations and molecular dynamics in the canonical NVT ensemble at the VMC level. For the electronic part, a full WF optimization is made possible thanks to state-of-the-art stochastic algorithms for energy minimization. The interpretation of nanoplasmonic effects on molecular properties, such as metal-enhanced absorption or fluorescence, typically assumes a fully coherent picture (in the quantum-mechanical sense) of the phenomena. Yet, there may be conditions where the coherent picture breaks down, and decoherence effect should be accounted for. Using a state-of-the-art multiscale model approach able to include environment-induced dephasing, here we show that metal nanoparticle effects on the light absorption by a nearby molecule is strongly affected (even qualitatively, i.e., suppression vs enhancement) by molecular electronic decoherence. The formation of hybrid light-molecule states (polaritons) offers a new strategy to manipulate the photochemistry of molecules. To fully exploit its potential, one needs to build a toolbox of polaritonic phenomenologies that supplement those of standard photochemistry. By means of a state-of-the-art computational photochemistry approach extended to the strong-coupling regime, here we disclose various mechanisms peculiar of polaritonic chemistry: coherent population oscillations between polaritons, quenching by trapping in dead-end polaritonic states and the alteration of the photochemical reaction pathway and quantum yields. We focus on azobenzene photoisomerization, that encompasses the essential features of complex photochemical reactions such as the presence of conical intersections and reaction coordinates involving multiple internal modes. In the strong coupling regime, a polaritonic conical intersection arises and we characterize its role in the photochemical process. A clear understanding of the mechanisms that control the electron dynamics in strong laser field is still a challenge that requires to be interpreted by advanced theory. Development of accurate theoretical and computational methods, able to provide a precise treatment of the fundamental processes generated in the strong field regime, is therefore crucial. A central aspect is the choice of the basis for the wave-function expansion. Accuracy in describing multiphoton processes is strictly related to the intrinsic properties of the basis, such as numerical convergence, computational cost, and representation of the continuum. By explicitly solving the 1D and 3D time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation for H$^{+}_{2}$ in presence of an intense electric field, we explore the numerical performance of using a real-space grid, a B-spline basis, and a Gaussian basis (improved by optimal Gaussian functions for the continuum). We analyze the performance of the three bases for high-harmonic generation and above-threshold ionization for H$^{+}_{2}$. In particular, for high-harmonic generation, the capability of the basis to reproduce the two-center interference and the hyper-Raman phenomena is investigated., Comment: 35 pages, 12 figures

The structures of three negatively charged forms (anionic keto-1 and enol-1, dianonic enol-2) of oxyluciferin (OxyLuc), which are the most probable emitters responsible for the firefly bioluminescence, have been fully relaxed at the variational Monte Carlo (VMC) level. Absorption energies of the S1<-S0 vertical transition have been computed using different levels of theory, such as TDDFT, CC2 and many body Green's function Theory (MBGFT). The use of MBGFT, by means of the Bethe-Salpeter (BS) formalism, on VMC structures provides results in excellent agreement with the value (2.26(8) eV) obtained by action spectroscopy experiments for the keto-1 form (2.32 eV). To unravel the role of the quality of the optimized ground state geometry, BS excitation energies have also been computed on CASSCF geometries, inducing a non negligible blue shift (0.08 and 0.07 eV for keto-1 and enol-1 forms, respectively) with respect to the VMC ones. Structural effects have been analyzed in terms of over- or under-correlation along the conjugated bonds of OxyLuc by using different methods for the ground-state optimization. The relative stability of the S$_1$ state for the keto-1 and enol-1 forms depends on the method chosen for the excited state calculation, thus representing a fundamental caveat for any theoretical study on these systems. Finally, Kohn-Sham HOMO and LUMO orbitals of enol-2 are (nearly) bound only when the dianion is embedded into a solvent (water and toluene in the present work); excited state calculations are therefore meaningful only in presence of a dielectric medium which localizes the electronic density. Revealing possible long-living coherence in ultrafast processes allows detecting genuine quantum mechanical effects in molecules. To investigate such effects from a quantum chemistry perspective, we have developed a method for simulating the time evolution of molecular systems, based on ab initio calculations that includes relaxation and environment-induced dephasing of the molecular wave function, whose rates are external parameters. The proposed approach combines a quantum chemistry description of the molecular target with a real-time propagation scheme within the time-dependent stochastic Schroedinger equation. Moreover, it allows a quantitative characterization of the state and dynamics coherence, through the l1-norm of coherence and the linear entropy, respectively. To test the approach, we have simulated femtosecond pulse-shaping ultrafast spectroscopy of terrylenediimide, a well studied fluorophore in single-molecule spectroscopy. Our approach is able to reproduce the experimental findings [R. We propose a method for obtaining effective lifetimes of scattering electronic states for avoiding the artificially confinement of the wave function due to the use of incomplete basis sets in time-dependent electronic-structure calculations of atoms and molecules. In this method, using a fitting procedure, the lifetimes are extracted from the spatial asymptotic decay of the approximate scattering wave functions obtained with a given basis set. The method is based on a rigorous analysis of the complex-energy solutions of the Schr{\"o}dinger equation. It gives lifetimes adapted to any given basis set without using any empirical parameters. The method can be considered as an ab initio version of the heuristic lifetime model of Klinkusch et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 131, 114304 (2009)]. The method is validated on the H and He atoms using Gaussian-type basis sets for calculation of high-harmonic-generation spectra.

We present the extension of variational Monte Carlo (VMC) to the calculation of electronic excitation energies and oscillator strengths using time-dependent linear-response theory. By exploiting the analogy existing between the linear method for wave-function optimisation and the generalised eigenvalue equation of linear-response theory, we formulate the equations of linear-response VMC (LR-VMC). This LR-VMC approach involves the first-and second-order derivatives of the wave function with respect to the parameters. We perform first tests of the LR-VMC method within the Tamm-Dancoff approximation using single-determinant Jastrow-Slater wave functions with different Slater basis sets on some singlet and triplet excitations of the beryllium atom. Comparison with reference experimental data and with configuration-interaction-singles (CIS) results shows that LR-VMC generally outperforms CIS for excitation energies and is thus a promising approach for calculating electronic excited-state properties of atoms and molecules., Comment: Advances in Quantum Chemistry, 2017, Novel Electronic Structure Theory: General Innovations and Strongly Correlated Systems

We explore the computation of high-harmonic generation spectra by means of Gaussian basis sets in approaches propagating the time-dependent Schr{\"o}dinger equation. We investigate the efficiency of Gaussian functions specifically designed for the description of the continuum proposed by Kaufmann et al. [J. Phys. B 22, 2223 (1989)]. We assess the range of applicability of this approach by studying the hydrogen atom, i.e. the simplest atom for which "exact" calculations on a grid can be performed. We notably study the effect of increasing the basis set cardinal number, the number of diffuse basis functions, and the number of Gaussian pseudo-continuum basis functions for various laser parameters. Our results show that the latter significantly improve the description of the low-lying continuum states, and provide a satisfactory agreement with grid calculationsfor laser wavelengths $\lambda$0 = 800 and 1064 nm. The Kaufmann continuum functions therefore appear as a promising way of constructing Gaussian basis sets for studying molecular electron dynamics in strong laser fields using time-dependent quantum-chemistry approaches.

Diradical molecules are essential species involved in many organic and inorganic chemical reactions. The computational study of their electronic structure is often challenging, because a reliable description of the correlation, and in particular of the static one, requires multi-reference techniques. The Jastrow correlated Antisymmetrized Geminal Power (JAGP) is a compact and efficient wave function ansatz, based on the valence-bond representation, which can be used within Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) approaches. The AGP part can be rewritten in terms of molecular orbitals, obtaining a multi-determinant expansion with zero-seniority number. In the present work we demonstrate the capability of the JAGP ansatz to correctly describe the electronic structure of two diradical prototypes: the orthogonally twisted ethylene, C2H4, and the methylene, CH2, representing respectively a homosymmetric and heterosymmetric system. On the other hand, we show that the simple ansatz of a Jastrow correlated Single Determinant (JSD) wave function is unable to provide an accurate description of the electronic structure in these diradical molecules, both at variational level and, more remarkably, in the fixed-nodes projection schemes showing that a poor description of the static correlation yields an inaccurate nodal surface. The suitability of JAGP to correctly describe diradicals with a computational cost comparable with that of a JSD calculation, in combination with a favorable scalability of QMC algorithms with the system size, opens new perspectives in the ab initio study of large diradical systems, like the transition states in cycloaddition reactions and the thermal isomerization of biological chromophores.

In this letter we report the singlet ground state structure of the full carotenoid peridinin by means of variational Monte Carlo (VMC) calculations. The VMC relaxed geometry has an average bond length alternation of 0.1165(10) {\AA}, larger than the values obtained by DFT (PBE, B3LYP and CAM-B3LYP) and shorter than that calculated at the Hartree-Fock (HF) level. TDDFT and EOM-CCSD calculations on a reduced peridinin model confirm the HOMO-LUMO major contribution of the Bu+-like (S2) bright excited state. Many Body Green's Function Theory (MBGFT) calculations of the vertical excitation energy of the Bu+-like state for the VMC structure (VMC/MBGFT) provide excitation energy of 2.62 eV, in agreement with experimental results in n-hexane (2.72 eV). The dependence of the excitation energy on the bond length alternation in the MBGFT and TDDFT calculations with different functionals is discussed.
