Abstract

Radiation reaction describes the effective force experienced by an accelerated charge due to radiation emission. Quantum effects dominate charge dynamics and radiation production[1][2] for charges accelerated by fields with strengths approaching the Schwinger field, $\mathbf{E_{sch}=}$\textbf{\SI[detect-weight]{1.3e18}{\volt\per\metre}[3]. Such fields exist in extreme astrophysical environments such as pulsar magnetospheres[4], may be accessed by high-power laser systems[5-7], dense particle beams interacting with plasma[8], crystals[9], and at the interaction point of next generation particle colliders[10]. Classical radiation reaction theories do not limit the frequency of radiation emitted by accelerating charges and omit stochastic effects inherent in photon emission[11], thus demanding a quantum treatment. Two quantum radiation reaction models, the quantum-continuous[12] and quantum-stochastic[13] models, correct the former issue, while only the quantum-stochastic model incorporates stochasticity[12]. Such models are of fundamental importance, providing insight into the effect of the electron self-force on its dynamics in electromagnetic fields. The difficulty of accessing conditions where quantum effects dominate inhibited previous efforts to observe quantum radiation reaction in charged particle dynamics with high significance. We report the first direct, high significance $(>5{\sigma})$ observation of strong-field radiation reaction on charged particles. Furthermore, we obtain strong evidence favouring the quantum radiation reaction models, which perform equivalently, over the classical model. Robust model comparison was facilitated by a novel Bayesian framework which inferred collision parameters. This framework has widespread utility for experiments where parameters governing lepton-laser collisions cannot be directly measured, including those using conventional accelerators., Comment: 31 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

Laser-driven plasma wakefields can provide hundreds of MeV electron beam in mm-range distances potentially shrinking the dimension of the actual particle accelerators. The plasma density plays a fundamental role in the control and stability of the acceleration process, which is a key development for the future electron injector proposed by EuPRAXIA. A gas cell was designed by LPGP and LIDYL teams, with variable length and backing pressure, to confine the gas and tailor the gas density profile before the arrival of the laser. This cell was used during an experimental campaign with the multi TW-class laser at the Lund Laser Centre. Ionization assisted injection in a tailored density profile is used to tune the electron beam properties. During the experiment, we filled the gas cell with hydrogen mixed with different concentration of nitrogen. We also varied the backing pressure of the gas and the geometrical length of the gas cell. We used a transverse probe to acquire shadowgraphic images of the plasma and to measure the plasma electron density. Abstract

We introduce the Automatic Learning for the Rapid Classification of Events (ALeRCE) broker, an astronomical alert broker designed to provide a rapid and self--consistent classification of large etendue telescope alert streams, such as that provided by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and, in the future, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). ALeRCE is a Chilean--led broker run by an interdisciplinary team of astronomers and engineers, working to become intermediaries between survey and follow--up facilities. ALeRCE uses a pipeline which includes the real--time ingestion, aggregation, cross--matching, machine learning (ML) classification, and visualization of the ZTF alert stream. We use two classifiers: a stamp--based classifier, designed for rapid classification, and a light--curve--based classifier, which uses the multi--band flux evolution to achieve a more refined classification. We describe in detail our pipeline, data products, tools and services, which are made public for the community (see \url{https://alerce.science}). Since we began operating our real--time ML classification of the ZTF alert stream in early 2019, we have grown a large community of active users around the globe. We describe our results to date, including the real--time processing of $9.7\times10^7$ alerts, the stamp classification of $1.9\times10^7$ objects, the light curve classification of $8.5\times10^5$ objects, the report of 3088 supernova candidates, and different experiments using LSST-like alert streams. Finally, we discuss the challenges ahead to go from a single-stream of alerts such as ZTF to a multi--stream ecosystem dominated by LSST., Comment: Submitted to AAS on Jun 29th. Abstract

We present the first version of the ALeRCE (Automatic Learning for the Rapid Classification of Events) broker light curve classifier. ALeRCE is currently processing the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) alert stream, in preparation for the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. The ALeRCE light curve classifier uses variability features computed from the ZTF alert stream, and colors obtained from AllWISE and ZTF photometry. We apply a Balanced Random Forest algorithm with a two-level scheme, where the top level classifies each source as periodic, stochastic, or transient, and the bottom level further resolves each of these hierarchical classes, amongst 15 total classes. This classifier corresponds to the first attempt to classify multiple classes of stochastic variables (including core- and host-dominated active galactic nuclei, blazars, young stellar objects, and cataclysmic variables) in addition to different classes of periodic and transient sources, using real data. We created a labeled set using various public catalogs (such as the Catalina Surveys and {\em Gaia} DR2 variable stars catalogs, and the Million Quasars catalog), and we classify all objects with $\geq6$ $g$-band or $\geq6$ $r$-band detections in ZTF (868,371 sources as of 2020/06/09), providing updated classifications for sources with new alerts every day. For the top level we obtain macro-averaged precision and recall scores of 0.96 and 0.99, respectively, and for the bottom level we obtain macro-averaged precision and recall scores of 0.57 and 0.76, respectively. Abstract

The $\bar{\Lambda} / \Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda} / K^0_\mathrm{S}$ production ratios are measured by the LHCb detector from $0.3\,\mathrm{nb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions delivered by the LHC at $\sqrt{s} = 0.9$\,TeV and $1.8\,\mathrm{nb}^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 7$\,TeV. Abstract

The relative abundance of the three decay modes $B_d \to D^- K^+$, $B_d \to D^- \pi^+$ and $B_s \to D_s^- \pi^+$ produced in 7 TeV $pp$ collisions at the LHC is determined from data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35 pb$^{-1}$. The branching fraction of $B_d \to D^- K^+$ is found to be $\cal B (B_d \to D^- K^+) = (2.01 \pm 0.18^{\textrm{stat}} \pm 0.14^{\textrm{syst}})\times 10^{-4}$. The ratio of fragmentation fractions \fsfdt is determined through the relative abundance of $B_s \to D_s^- \pi^+$ to $B_d \to D^- K^+$ and $B_d \to D^-\pi^+$, leading to $f_s/f_d = 0.253 \pm 0.017 \pm 0.017 \pm 0.020$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and theoretical respectively., Comment: Submitted to PRL (7 pages, 2 Figures, 1 Table); Physical Review Letters, Vol.107, No.21, 2011

Abstract

A search for the decays Bs-->mumu and Bd-->mumu is performed with about 37 pb^{-1} of pp collisions at sqrt{s} = 7 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The observed numbers of events are consistent with the background expectations. The resulting upper limits on the branching ratios are BR(Bs-->mumu) < 5.6 x 10^{-8} and BR(Bd-->mumu) <1.5 x 10^{-8} at 95% confidence level., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Using data collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, the semileptonic decays Bs -> Ds+ X mu nu and Bs -> D0 K+ X mu nu are detected. Two structures are observed in the D0 K+ mass spectrum at masses consistent with the known D^+_{s1}(2536) and $D^{*+}_{s2}(2573) mesons. The measured branching fractions relative to the total Bs semileptonic rate are B(Bs -> D_{s2}^{*+} X mu nu)/B(Bs -> X mu nu)= (3.3\pm 1.0\pm 0.4)%, and B(Bs -> D_{s1}^+ X munu)/B(Bs -> X mu nu)= (5.4\pm 1.2\pm 0.5)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This is the first observation of the D_{s2}^{*+} state in Bs decays; we also measure its mass and width., Comment: 8 pages 2 figures. Published in Physics Letters B

Abstract

Using data collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, the hadronic decay Bs -> J/psi f0(980) is observed. This CP eigenstate mode could be used to measure mixing-induced CP violation in the B_s system. Using a fit to the pi+ pi- mass spectrum with interfering resonances gives R_{f0/phi} = [Gamma(Bs -> J/psi f0, f0 -> pi+ pi-)]/[Gamma(Bs -> J/psi phi, phi -> K+K-)] = 0.252^{+0.046+0.027}_{-0.032-0.033}, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures. Abstract

Decays of b hadrons into final states containing a D0 meson and a muon are used to measure the b anti-b production cross-section in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the LHC. In the pseudorapidity interval 2 < eta < 6 and integrated over all transverse momenta we find that the average cross-section to produce b-flavoured or anti-b-flavoured hadrons is (75.3 +/- 5.4 +/- 13.0) microbarns., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Physics Lett. Abstract

The production of K_short mesons in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 0.9 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The luminosity of the analysed sample is determined using a novel technique, involving measurements of the beam currents, sizes and positions, and is found to be 6.8 +/- 1.0 microbarn^-1. The differential prompt K_short production cross-section is measured as a function of the K_short transverse momentum and rapidity in the region 0 < pT < 1.6 GeV/c and 2.5 < y < 4.0. Abstract

Introducción: Este artículo analiza cómo señalizan las televisiones los contenidos de sus programas y si lo hacen según lo establecido por el Código de Autorregulación sobre Contenidos de Televisión e Infancia. También recoge la opinión de expertos sobre los problemas de los operadores de televisión para interpretar los criterios de clasificación y señalización que aparecen en la normativa legal. Metodología: Se utiliza una metodología basada en el Estudio de Caso, completada con un cuestionario Delphi y una entrevista a un grupo de expertos. Resultados. Se constata que, aunque las cadenas señalizan la emisión, en algún caso se detecta falta de señalización en la EPG, en la web y en el teletexto. También se confirman dificultades para interpretar los criterios del Código de Autorregulación. Discusión y conclusiones: Urge una reflexión sobre los criterios orientadores del Código, una mejor información a los usuarios y el control de contenidos audiovisuales on line., Introduction: This paper discusses how Spanish media service providers rate and label their contents, and if they do it according with the requirements of the Self-Regulation Code on Television and Children (Código de Autorregulación de Contenidos Televisivos e Infancia). It also highlights the problems of interpretation of the guiding criteria, due to their lack of concretion and ambiguity. Methodology: The methodology is based on the Case Study, completed with a questionnaire and with some personal interviews with a group of experts. Results: It is noted that although all Media providers provide rating information on the screen, some of them do not offer this information in their EPG, their web pages, or their teletext. Some of the interviewed alleged the difficulties to interpret the classification criteria in the Code. Discussion and Conclusions: Even though Media providers do an effort to comply with regulations, the overall scenario for content rating and labelling in Spain can clearly get improved. Abstract

Background: Effective advocacy on self-care and the enhancement of a sense of coherence among nurses don't only benefit control over one's health and personal performance, but it may have a direct impact on clinical care and on the entire healing system. In this regard, nursing curricula grounded on a salutogenic model of health (SMH) operate with strategies to engage students in self-care and contribute to improving their mental health and wellbeing. The aim of this study was to explore the relationships between self-care agency and a sense of coherence as dependent variables and the age and self-reported academic performance as independent variables in nursing assistant students. Methods: For this cross-sectional study, data were collected from a full sample of 921 Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Spanish students. A self-administered questionnaire, including sociodemographic variables, the 'appraisal of self-care agency' (ASA), and the 'sense of coherence' (SOC) constructs, was administered. Results: Older participants presented significantly stronger values of both constructs. Apart from a significant and positive correlation between ASAS and SOC, ANOVA analyses indicate significant differences in terms of academic performance according to different ASAS and SOC degrees. Conclusions: The findings of this study endorse the assumption that there is a consistent relationship between ASA and SOC constructs that might, indeed, have a potential effect on students' academic performance. In practical terms, it seems relevant to try to recognise the students' self-care agency and the sense of coherence as forceful predictive variables of mental health and wellbeing, in addition to academic success as a strength implied in the future career achievement.

Abstract

A machine learning model was created to predict the electron spectrum generated by a GeV-class laser wakefield accelerator. The model was constructed from variational convolutional neural networks, which mapped the results of secondary laser and plasma diagnostics to the generated electron spectrum. An ensemble of trained networks was used to predict the electron spectrum and to provide an estimation of the uncertainty of that prediction. It is anticipated that this approach will be useful for inferring the electron spectrum prior to undergoing any process that can alter or destroy the beam. In addition, the model provides insight into the scaling of electron beam properties due to stochastic fluctuations in the laser energy and plasma electron density. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Impaired synaptic function is a common phenotype in animal models for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and ASD risk genes are enriched for synaptic function. Here we leverage the availability of multiple ASD mouse models exhibiting synaptic deficits and behavioral correlates of ASD and use quantitative mass spectrometry with isobaric tandem mass tagging (TMT) to compare the hippocampal synaptic proteomes from 7 mouse models. We identified common altered cellular and molecular pathways at the synapse, including changes in Rho family small GTPase signaling, suggesting that it may be a point of convergence in ASD. Comparative analyses also revealed clusters of synaptic profiles, with similarities observed among models for Fragile X syndrome (Fmr1 knockout), PTEN hamartoma tumor syndrome (Pten haploinsufficiency), and the BTBR+ model of idiopathic ASD. Opposing changes were found in models for cortical dysplasia focal epilepsy syndrome (Cntnap2 knockout), Phelan McDermid syndrome (Shank3 InsG3680), Timothy syndrome (Cacna1c G406R), and ANKS1B syndrome (Anks1b haploinsufficiency), which were similar to each other. We propose that these clusters of synaptic profiles form the basis for molecular subtypes that explain genetic heterogeneity in ASD despite a common clinical diagnosis. Drawn from an internally controlled survey of the synaptic proteome across animal models, our findings support the notion that synaptic dysfunction in the hippocampus is a shared mechanism of disease in ASD, and that Rho GTPase signaling may be an important pathway leading to disease phenotypes in autism.

Abstract

We present a real-time stamp classifier of astronomical events for the Automatic Learning for the Rapid Classification of Events broker, ALeRCE. The classifier is based on a convolutional neural network, trained on alerts ingested from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). Using only the science, reference, and difference images of the first detection as inputs, along with the metadata of the alert as features, the classifier is able to correctly classify alerts from active galactic nuclei, supernovae (SNe), variable stars, asteroids, and bogus classes, with high accuracy (~94%) in a balanced test set. In order to find and analyze SN candidates selected by our classifier from the ZTF alert stream, we designed and deployed a visualization tool called SN Hunter, where relevant information about each possible SN is displayed for the experts to choose among candidates to report to the Transient Name Server database. From 2019 June 26 to 2021 February 28, we have reported 6846 SN candidates to date (11.8 candidates per day on average), of which 971 have been confirmed spectroscopically. Our ability to report objects using only a single detection means that 70% of the reported SNe occurred within one day after the first detection. ALeRCE has only reported candidates not otherwise detected or selected by other groups, therefore adding new early transients to the bulk of objects available for early follow-up. Our work represents an important milestone toward rapid alert classifications with the next generation of large etendue telescopes, such as the Vera C. Rubin Observatory.

Abstract

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease caused by the destruction of insulin-producing cells. Due to the ability of apoptotic cells clearance to induce tolerance, we previously generated liposomes rich in phophatidylserine (PS) -a feature of apoptotic cells- loaded with insulin peptides to mimic apoptotic beta-cells. PS-liposomes arrested autoimmunity in experimental T1D through the induction of tolerance. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of several peptides from different T1D autoantigens encapsulated in (PS)-liposomes for T1D prevention and to assess its safety. T1D autoantigens (Insulin, C-peptide, GAD65 and IA2) were encapsulated in PS-liposomes. Liposomes were administered to the 'gold-standard' model for the study of autoimmune T1D, the Non-Obese Diabetic mouse, that spontaneously develop the disease. Safety and toxicity of liposomes were also determined. Only PS-liposomes encapsulating insulin peptides decrease T1D incidence in the Non-Obese Diabetic mouse model. Disease prevention correlates with a decrease in the severity of the autoimmune islet destruction driven by leukocytes. PS-liposomes neither showed toxic effect nor secondary complications. Among the here referred autoantigens, insulin peptides are the best candidates to be encapsulated in liposomes, like an artificial apoptotic cell, for the arrest of autoimmunity in T1D in a safe manner.

Abstract

Information and communication technologies are transforming the way we understand health, via a hyper-connected world in which patients, professionals and society take on new challenges and roles. This change is creating an ecosystem called connected health, in which telemedicine acquires special importance when distance (not only geographical), is a critical factor. It can respond to financial, social or safety needs or questions of dignity, as is the case with prisoners when they are transferred handcuffed and under custody to hospitals. Bringing health services closer to patients who cannot autonomously travel contributes towards humanising healthcare. Tele-consultations, long-distance encounters between patients and health professionals, reduce the direct and social costs inherent to habitual clinical practice and are very highly valued by patients in prison. Despite its potential benefits in the prison setting, the implementation of telemedicine in Spain continues to be scarce and irregular, which, amongst other things, is due to a lack of awareness of this healthcare practice, the severe shortage of resources currently endemic to the prison health service system and the lack of interoperability solutions for clinical information between the healthcare administration and the prison health services, which unfortunately continue to depend on an organisation outside the healthcare ambit (the Ministry of Home Affairs), despite the legal provisions requiring them to be fully integrated into regional health services. The SARA (Administration Applications and Networks Systems) Network and the Reúnete© Service offer solid, secure, free technology is available to all prisons, to set in motion telemedicine programs at a nationwide level. Resumen Las tecnologías de la información y comunicación están transformando la forma de entender la salud, a través de un mundo hiperconectado en el que pacientes, profesionales y sociedad adquieren nuevos retos y protagonismos. Esta transformación crea un ecosistema, que se denomina salud conectada, dentro del cual la telemedicina adquiere especial relevancia cuando la distancia, no solo geográfica, es un factor crítico. Puede responder a razones económicas, sociales, de seguridad, o de dignidad, como les ocurre a las personas ingresadas en prisión cuando son trasladadas custodiadas y esposadas a los hospitales. Acercar los servicios de salud al paciente que no puede desplazarse en condiciones de autonomía contribuye a humanizar la asistencia sanitaria. Las teleconsultas, encuentros a distancia entre pacientes y profesionales de la salud, reducen los costes directos y sociales respecto a la práctica clínica habitual y son muy bien valoradas por los pacientes que se encuentran en prisión. Pese a los potenciales beneficios de la telemedicina en el medio penitenciario, su implantación en España sigue siendo muy escasa e irregular, debido, entre otros factores, a la falta de difusión de esta práctica asistencial, a la grave insuficiencia de medios que atraviesan los servicios de salud penitenciarios y a la falta de soluciones de interoperabilidad de la información clínica entre la administración sanitaria y los servicios de salud penitenciarios, que desgraciadamente siguen dependiendo de una organización no sanitaria, el Ministerio del Interior, pese a las disposiciones legales que obligan a su plena integración en los servicios autonómicos de salud. La Red SARA (Sistemas de Aplicaciones y Redes para las Administraciones) y el Servicio Reúnete© ofrecen tecnología sólida, segura, gratuita y a disposición de todos los centros penitenciarios, para poner en marcha programas de telemedicina a nivel nacional.

Using only the science, reference and difference images of the first detection as inputs, along with the metadata of the alert as features, the classifier is able to correctly classify alerts from active galactic nuclei, supernovae (SNe), variable stars, asteroids and bogus classes, with high accuracy (∼94%) in a balanced test set. In order to find and analyze SN candidates selected by our classifier from the ZTF alert stream, we designed and deployed a visualization tool called SN Hunter, where relevant information about each possible SN is displayed for the experts to choose among candidates to report to the Transient Name Server database. We have reported 3060 SN candidates to date (9.2 candidates per day on average), of which 394 have been confirmed spectroscopically. Our ability to report objects using only a single detection means that 92% of the reported SNe occurred within one day after the first detection. ALeRCE has only reported candidates not otherwise detected or selected by other groups, therefore adding new early transients to the bulk of objects available for early follow-up. Our work represents an important milestone toward rapid alert classifications with the next generation of large etendue telescopes, such as the Vera C. Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time.

Un entorno de práctica profesional en enfermería (EPPE) es el que promueve, facilita u obstaculiza al personal de enfermería para prestar cuidados de calidad, además de incrementar la seguridad y bienestar de los pacientes y de sus profesionales. Construir entornos positivos fomenta la excelencia de la organización, optimiza los resultados y mejora la percepción y satisfacción del usuario. En numerosos países se ha podido constatar que determinados ámbitos asistenciales de enfermería considerados excelentes influyen de forma objetiva en los resultados en salud, con disminución de la morbimortalidad, aumento de la calidad y mejora del cuidado (1), además de la contención de costes (2) y otros múltiples beneficios para la sociedad, el ciudadano, el usuario y el profesional.
