Abstract

The X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) instrument on the future ESA mission Athena X-ray Observatory is a cryogenic micro-calorimeter array of Transition Edge Sensor (TES) detectors designed to provide spatially-resolved high-resolution spectroscopy. The onboard reconstruction software provides energy, spatial location and arrival time of incoming X-ray photons hitting the detector. A new processing algorithm based on a truncation of the classical optimal filter and called 0-padding, has been recently proposed aiming to reduce the computational cost without compromising energy resolution. Initial tests with simple synthetic data displayed promising results. This study explores the slightly better performance of the 0-padding filter and assess its final application to real data. The goal is to examine the larger sensitivity to instrumental conditions that was previously observed during the analysis of the simulations. This 0-padding technique is thoroughly tested using more realistic simulations and real data acquired from NASA and NIST laboratories employing X-IFU-like TES detectors. Different fitting methods are applied to the data, and a comparative analysis is performed to assess the energy resolution values obtained from these fittings. The 0-padding filter achieves energy resolutions as good as those obtained with standard filters, even with those of larger lengths, across different line complexes and instrumental conditions. This method proves to be useful for energy reconstruction of X-ray photons detected by the TES detectors provided proper corrections for baseline drift and jitter effects are applied. Abstract

The Athena X-ray Integral Unit (X-IFU) is the high resolution X-ray spectrometer, studied since 2015 for flying in the mid-30s on the Athena space X-ray Observatory, a versatile observatory designed to address the Hot and Energetic Universe science theme, selected in November 2013 by the Survey Science Committee. Based on a large format array of Transition Edge Sensors (TES), it aims to provide spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy, with a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV (up to 7 keV) over an hexagonal field of view of 5 arc minutes (equivalent diameter). The X-IFU entered its System Requirement Review (SRR) in June 2022, at about the same time when ESA called for an overall X-IFU redesign (including the X-IFU cryostat and the cooling chain), due to an unanticipated cost overrun of Athena. In this paper, after illustrating the breakthrough capabilities of the X-IFU, we describe the instrument as presented at its SRR, browsing through all the subsystems and associated requirements. We then show the instrument budgets, with a particular emphasis on the anticipated budgets of some of its key performance parameters. Finally we briefly discuss on the ongoing key technology demonstration activities, the calibration and the activities foreseen in the X-IFU Instrument Science Center, and touch on communication and outreach activities, the consortium organisation, and finally on the life cycle assessment of X-IFU aiming at minimising the environmental footprint, associated with the development of the instrument. Thanks to the studies conducted so far on X-IFU, it is expected that along the design-to-cost exercise requested by ESA, the X-IFU will maintain flagship capabilities in spatially resolved high resolution X-ray spectroscopy, enabling most of the original X-IFU related scientific objectives of the Athena mission to be retained. 6. Pulse processing in TES detectors: comparison of different short filter methods based on optimal filtering. Case study for Athena X-IFU

In the framework of the ESA Athena mission, the X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) instrument to be on board the X-ray Athena Observatory is a cryogenic micro-calorimeter array of Transition Edge Sensor (TES) detectors aimed at providing spatially resolved high-resolution spectroscopy. As a part of the on-board Event Processor (EP), the reconstruction software will provide the energy, spatial location and arrival time of the incoming X-ray photons hitting the detector and inducing current pulses on it. Being the standard optimal filtering technique the chosen baseline reconstruction algorithm, different modifications have been analyzed to process pulses shorter than those considered of high resolution (those where the full length is not available due to a close pulse after them) in order to select the best option based on energy resolution and computing performance results. It can be concluded that the best approach to optimize the energy resolution for short filters is the 0-padding filtering technique, benefiting also from a reduction in the computational resources. Abstract

The X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) is the high resolution X-ray spectrometer of the ESA Athena X-ray observatory. Over a field of view of 5' equivalent diameter, it will deliver X-ray spectra from 0.2 to 12 keV with a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV up to 7 keV on ~5 arcsecond pixels. The X-IFU is based on a large format array of super-conducting molybdenum-gold Transition Edge Sensors cooled at about 90 mK, each coupled with an absorber made of gold and bismuth with a pitch of 249 microns. A cryogenic anti-coincidence detector located underneath the prime TES array enables the non X-ray background to be reduced. A bath temperature of about 50 mK is obtained by a series of mechanical coolers combining 15K Pulse Tubes, 4K and 2K Joule-Thomson coolers which pre-cool a sub Kelvin cooler made of a 3He sorption cooler coupled with an Adiabatic Demagnetization Refrigerator. Frequency domain multiplexing enables to read out 40 pixels in one single channel. A photon interacting with an absorber leads to a current pulse, amplified by the readout electronics and whose shape is reconstructed on board to recover its energy with high accuracy. The defocusing capability offered by the Athena movable mirror assembly enables the X-IFU to observe the brightest X-ray sources of the sky (up to Crab-like intensities) by spreading the telescope point spread function over hundreds of pixels. Thus the X-IFU delivers low pile-up, high throughput (>50%), and typically 10 eV spectral resolution at 1 Crab intensities, i.e. a factor of 10 or more better than Silicon based X-ray detectors. In this paper, the current X-IFU baseline is presented, together with an assessment of its anticipated performance in terms of spectral resolution, background, and count rate capability. Abstract

The X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) on board the Advanced Telescope for High-ENergy Astrophysics (Athena) will provide spatially resolved high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy from 0.2 to 12 keV, with 5 arc second pixels over a field of view of 5 arc minute equivalent diameter and a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV up to 7 keV. In this paper, we first review the core scientific objectives of Athena, driving the main performance parameters of the X-IFU, namely the spectral resolution, the field of view, the effective area, the count rate capabilities, the instrumental background. We also illustrate the breakthrough potential of the X-IFU for some observatory science goals. Then we briefly describe the X-IFU design as defined at the time of the mission consolidation review concluded in May 2016, and report on its predicted performance. Finally, we discuss some options to improve the instrument performance while not increasing its complexity and resource demands (e.g. count rate capability, spectral resolution). The X-IFU will be provided by an international consortium led by France, The Netherlands and Italy, with further ESA member state contributions from Belgium, Finland, Germany, Poland, Spain, Switzerland and two international partners from the United States and Japan., Comment: 41 pages, 18 Figures

Abstract

We present the instrument simulator xifusim developed for the X-ray Integral Field Unit X-IFU aboard the planned Athena mission. xifusim aims to be an accurate representation of the entire instrument, starting from a full simulation of the Transition-Edge Sensor (TES) array receiving impact photons unconstrained by the small signal limit. Its output current is then propagated through the entire readout chain, including multiplexing, amplification and the digital readout. The final output consists of triggered records, which can be post-processed to reconstruct the photon energies. The readout chain itself is separated into individual, modular blocks with several possible models for each, allowing the simulation of different readout schemes or models of varying physical accuracy at the expense of run time. New models are implemented as necessary to enable studies of the overall readout chain. Such studies are also facilitated by fine-grained control of the simulation output, including the internal state of intermediate simulation blocks. In addition to its modularity, xifusim also allows the manipulation of certain internal parameters during a run, enabling the simulation of readout chain characterization measurements, environmental drifts or various kinds of crosstalk.

The Athena X-ray Integral Unit (X-IFU) is the high resolution X-ray spectrometer studied since 2015 for flying in the mid-30s on the Athena space X-ray Observatory. Athena is a versatile observatory designed to address the Hot and Energetic Universe science theme, as selected in November 2013 by the Survey Science Committee. Based on a large format array of Transition Edge Sensors (TES), X-IFU aims to provide spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy, with a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV (up to 7 keV) over a hexagonal field of view of 5 arc minutes (equivalent diameter). The X-IFU entered its System Requirement Review (SRR) in June 2022, at about the same time when ESA called for an overall X-IFU redesign (including the X-IFU cryostat and the cooling chain), due to an unanticipated cost overrun of Athena. In this paper, after illustrating the breakthrough capabilities of the X-IFU, we describe the instrument as presented at its SRR (i.e. in the course of its preliminary definition phase, so-called B1), browsing through all the subsystems and associated requirements. We then show the instrument budgets, with a particular emphasis on the anticipated budgets of some of its key performance parameters, such as the instrument efficiency, spectral resolution, energy scale knowledge, count rate capability, non X-ray background and target of opportunity efficiency. Finally, we briefly discuss the ongoing key technology demonstration activities, the calibration and the activities foreseen in the X-IFU Instrument Science Center, touch on communication and outreach activities, the consortium organisation and the life cycle assessment of X-IFU aiming at minimising the environmental footprint, associated with the development of the instrument. Abstract

We present the implementation of the official simulator of the Athena X-IFU instrument within the SIXTE end-to-end simulation package. For the X-IFU, SIXTE implements all relevant physical effects that are necessary for a faithful representation of the imaging spectroscopy capabilities of the instrument. SIXTE can therefore be used to simulate X-IFU observations of point sources and extended sources, including sources with spatially variable spectral shapes and very bright sources. Examples of the microcalorimeter effects that are implemented are event grading and crosstalk. These effects cause the energy reconstruction of an X-ray event to be affected by photons impacting either on the same pixel or on different pixels coupled via the focal plane or the readout chain, respectively. The different types of crosstalk are parametrized using both laboratory data and physics simulations with the X-IFU instrument simulator xifusim. As a result of these effects, the X-IFU performance degrades for very bright sources. To mitigate this degradation, the simulator can be operated in different observation modes, such as the use of Be filters to block lower energy photons and a defocused mode, which spreads events from a point source over the whole detector.

24. Characterizing X-ray line complexes using cumulative distribution functions

Abstract

As part of the Spanish contribution to the Athena mission, an important effort has been invested in the detailed study of the impact of different algorithms devoted to the proper characterization of the energy of each photon that will be detected by X-IFU (see e.g., Ceballos et al. 2019a, 2019b, Cobo et al. 2020, Vega-Ferrero et al. 2022). The spectral resolutions achieved with the different strategies are evaluated by fitting X-ray line complexes corresponding to laboratory data generated with calibrated X-ray sources. Traditionally the data are binned in order to generate histograms which are subsequently fitted using the familiar chi-squared statistic or a maximum likelihood approach (Fowler 2014). In this work, we show how the use of cumulative distribution functions (CDF) can be employed to determine the fit of X-ray line complexes constituted by several lines without the need to perform an a priori data rebinning. The method has been checked using simulated data, and the results indicate that it can recover photons beyond the fitting range. Abstract

The X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) instrument to be on board the future ESA mission Athena X-ray Observatory is a cryogenic micro-calorimeter array of Transition Edge Sensor (TES) detectors aimed at providing spatially resolved high-resolution spectroscopy. As a part of the on-board Event Processor (EP), the reconstruction software will provide the energy, spatial location and arrival time of the incoming X-ray photons hitting the detector and inducing current pulses on it. Being the standard optimal filtering technique the chosen baseline reconstruction algorithm, a particular modification of this technique based on a truncation of the filter in the Time Domain (equivalent to 0-padding the pulse signal) was previously studied on simulated data, proving a better energy resolution results at a lower computational cost. However, the 0-padding technique also showed a larger sensitivity to instrumental conditions, making essential the analysis of its behaviour over real laboratory data. A comparative analysis of X-IFU-like TES laboratory data from NASA and NIST (at different instrumental conditions) with both the 0-padding filter and the standard optimal filters reconstruction shows that, once the corrections for the baseline drift and the jitter (phase introduced by the sampling rate) have been performed, the resolution values obtained using 0-padding are systematically lower than those of the standard filter of the same length and comparable or even lower to the values provided by the full-length filter. The shorter length of the 0-padding filter would be an additional benefit, reducing the computational cost of the reconstruction process.

28. Event detection and reconstruction using neural networks in TES devices: a case study for Athena/X-IFU

Abstract

Transition Edge Sensors detector devices, like the core of the X-IFU instrument that will be on-board the Athena X-ray Observatory, produce current pulses as a response to the incident X-ray photons. The reconstruction of these pulses has been traditionally performed by means of a triggering algorithm based on the derivative signal overcoming a threshold (detection) followed by an optimal filtering (to retrieve the energy of each event). However, when the arrival of the photons is very close in time, the triggering algorithm is incapable of detecting all the individual pulses which are thus piled-up. In order to improve the efficiency of the detection and energy-retrieval process, we study here an alternative approach based on Machine Learning techniques to process the pulses. For this purpose, we construct and train a series of Neural Networks (NNs) not only for the detection but also for the recovering of the arrival time and the energy of simulated X-ray pulses. The data set used to train the NNs consists of simulations performed with the sixte/xifusim software package, the Athena/X-IFU official simulator. The performance of our NN classification clearly surpasses the detection performance of the classical triggering approach for the full range of photon energy combinations, showing excellent metrics and very competitive computing efficiency. However, the precision obtained for the recovery of the energy of the photons cannot currently compete with the standard optimal filtering algorithm, despite its much better computing efficiency.

Abstract

The X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) microcalorimeter, on-board Athena, with its focal plane comprising 3840 Transition Edge Sensors (TESs) operating at 90 mK, will provide unprecedented spectral-imaging capability in the 0.2-12 keV energy range. It will rely on the on-board digital processing of current pulses induced by the heat deposited in the TES absorber, as to recover the energy of each individual events. Assessing the capabilities of the pulse reconstruction is required to understand the overall scientific performance of the X-IFU, notably in terms of energy resolution degradation with both increasing energies and count rates. Using synthetic data streams generated by the X-IFU End-to-End simulator, we present here a comprehensive benchmark of various pulse reconstruction techniques, ranging from standard optimal filtering to more advanced algorithms based on noise covariance matrices. Beside deriving the spectral resolution achieved by the different algorithms, a first assessment of the computing power and ground calibration needs is presented. Overall, all methods show similar performances, with the reconstruction based on noise covariance matrices showing the best improvement with respect to the standard optimal filtering technique. Due to prohibitive calibration needs, this method might however not be applicable to the X-IFU and the best compromise currently appears to be the so-called resistance space analysis which also features very promising high count rate capabilities.

Trabajo presentado a la XIV.0 Reunión Científica (virtual) de la SEA, celebrada del 13 al 15 de julio de 2020., Under the coordinated national project RTI2018-096686-B-C2, the collaboration among research groups at ICMA(CSIC-UZ), ICMAB(CSIC) and IFCA(CSIC-UC)+UCM has developed for the first time in Spain an instrumental setup to fabricate Transition Edge Sensors (TES), measure the detected X-ray pulses in the lab and reconstruct those pulses to establish the photons energies. TES are very sensitive detectors, with a high spectral resolution specially optimized for X-ray energies, like the ones that are the base for the X-IFU instrument that will be on board the ESA mission Athena. But they can be also designed to work at other wavelengths. On behalf of the IFCA-Difusion group Instituto de Física de Cantabria (CSIC-UC)., Trabajo presentado al XIV.0 Scientific Meeting (virtual) of the Spanish Astronomical Society (SEA), celebrado del13 al 15 de julio de 2020., In the era of new technologies, in the Department of Public Outreach of the Instituto de Física de Cantabria we have added to our more purely digital catalog various materials and activities from the “manual” era, for which IFCA staff have developed their better DIY skills. From a planetary system to a (dis) mountable black hole, through a cloud chamber or a gravitational table, never forgetting the infallible ©LEGO, the manual materials have surprisingly aroused the interest of our public and visitors of all ages encouraging, in addition, the interdisciplinarity and team work of the members of the different IFCA research groups. From the IFCA PO department we have been able to verify how these types of materials have a great acceptance and are frequently required because they provide a complementary, more classical vision of the physical phenomena that we show in our activities. Abstract

The X–IFU instrument to be on board the X–ray Athena Observatory is a cryogenic microcalorimeter array of TES detectors aimed at providing spatially resolved high–resolution spectroscopy. The reconstruction software will provide energy, position and arrival time of the incoming X–ray photons that produce current pulses in the detector. Different modifications of the standard optimal filtering algorithm have been compared to process pulses shorter than those considered of high resolution (those where the full length is not available due to a close pulse after them) to select the best algorithm based on energy resolution and computing performance results. We can conclude that the best approach is that of the 0–padding filtering. However further checks about its sensibility to instrumental changes (baseline, bias voltage, etc.) are required.

Abstract

Under the coordinated national project RTI2018-096686-B-C2, the collaboration among research groups at ICMA(CSIC-UZ), ICMAB(CSIC) and IFCA(CSIC-UC)+UCM has developed for the first time in Spain an instrumental setup to fabricate Transition Edge Sensors (TES), measure the detected X-ray pulses in the lab and reconstruct those pulses to establish the photons energies. TES are very sensitive detectors, with a high spectral resolution specially optimized for X-ray energies, like the ones that are the base for the X-IFU instrument that will be on board the ESA mission Athena. But they can be also designed to work at other wavelengths. This achievement opens the path in Spain for the local development of this cutting-edge technology specially suited for the astronomical research.

Abstract

In the era of new technologies, in the Department of Public Outreach of the Instituto de Física de Cantabria we have added to our more purely digital catalog various materials and activities from the “manual” era, for which IFCA staff have developed their better DIY skills. From a planetary system to a (dis) mountable black hole, through a cloud chamber or a gravitational table, never forgetting the infallible ©LEGO, the manual materials have surprisingly aroused the interest of our public and visitors of all ages encouraging, in addition, the interdisciplinarity and team work of the members of the different IFCA research groups. From the IFCA PO department we have been able to verify how these types of materials have a great acceptance and are frequently required because they provide a complementary, more classical vision of the physical phenomena that we show in our activities. This presentation takes a tour of the materials that we have developed at IFCA, from the manufacturing process to their use and enjoyment, and will try to convince the audience of the therapeutic nature of building and, that an image is worth a thousand words but it is worth more than two thousand words if you have a gadget next to it.
