1. Leveling the Playing Field: COVID-19's Impact on Interscholastic Athletic Participation in New York State Public Schools: An Ex Post Facto Analysis of District Demographics and Sport

Abstract

Each year in New York state, tens of thousands of student-athletes participate in interscholastic athletics on over 15,000 public school teams. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on interscholastic athletic participation rates in New York state public schools and their relationship to school districts' demographics, including percentage of non-White students, percentage of economically disadvantaged students, total enrollment, and graduation rates. The sample consisted of 218 public school districts located throughout New York state, with approximately 20 participant districts from each of the 11 New York State Public High School Athletic Association's governing sections. This study adds to the growing literature on equitable participation in interscholastic athletics. This ex post facto quantitative analysis relied on archived data from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association's annual participation survey and the New York State Education Department's enrollment data from the 2018-2019 and 2021-2022 school years. The data provided variables for path analysis that allowed the researcher to infer that the COVID-19 pandemic affected athletic participation across different demographics. It is important for educational leaders to consider equity and access to participation in interscholastic athletics and all of the associated benefits that attend such participation. The findings of this research provide additional quantitative data for educational leaders looking to build culturally responsive school communities that extend outside the classroom into the realm of extracurricular participation. Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis efek pemberitaan media massa pada persepsi publik tentang citra polisi berdasarkan studi literatur. Pendekatan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah pendekatan penelitian kualitatif. Penelitian yang menggunakan metodologi kualitas sebagai prosedur penelitian yang menghasilkan data deskriptif. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa secara keseluruhan, sejauh ini hanya ada sedikit bukti bahwa situs jejaring sosial telah berhasil digunakan oleh polisi untuk terlibat dan bekerja sama dengan masyarakat lebih dari sekadar memberi mereka informasi. Pemaparan sekilas gambaran statis penegakan hukum yang disebarluaskan oleh media tidak serta merta mempengaruhi opini masyarakat tentang kinerja polisi di masyarakat. Sebaliknya, opini global masyarakat tentang polisi dibentuk oleh keyakinan mereka sendiri, pengalaman sebelumnya dengan petugas, dan konsumsi media yang kumulatif dan dipilih sendiri. Menurut praktik saat ini, teori "Spiral of Silence" beradaptasi untuk mengatasi krisis sentimen publik terkait polisi, prasyarat dan pondasinya bervariasi ketika situasi berubah.

Abstract

El objetivo de la investigación es analizar la responsabilidad social como eje transversal en la formación gerencial de universidades venezolanas. La investigación fue descriptiva, de diseño transversal, apoyada en la revisión documental de artículos especializados en temas de responsabilidad social, logrando consultar la totalidad de universidades nacionales públicas venezolanas. Como resultados obtenidos, la mayoría de las universidades nacionales públicas mencionan la importancia de la responsabilidad social, aun cuando solo una minoría ha declarado ésta como eje trasversal en la formación de los estudiantes, es decir, ninguna la ha puesto completamente en práctica. Las universidades deben incorporar de manera inmediata, en sus diseños curriculares, el eje transversal responsabilidad social, y trabajar por capacitar a los formadores en responsabilidad social de manera permanente, para que estos puedan realizar transferencia de conocimiento para obtener aprendizajes significativos y constructivos. Superar viejos esquemas y profundizar la enseñanza de la responsabilidad social en los diferentes espacios universitarios; es imperante contar con profesionales competitivos y comprometidos con la preservación de la vida y responsables socialmente.

Abstract

La función de luminosidad de cuásares mide el número de cuásares que existen por megaparsec cúbico por unidad de magnitud absoluta. Es una de las herramientas más importantes para estudiar la población de galaxias de núcleo activo y su evolución a lo largo del tiempo. Nuestra investigación pretende estimar esta función bajo un enfoque probabilístico. Mediante un proceso de Poisson no homogéneo bidimensional modelamos la intensidad de cuásares observados en un espacio de magnitud absoluta por corrimiento al rojo. Se desarrollan una serie de modelos flexibles para la función de luminosidad que son estimados por el método de máxima verosimilitud y seleccionados mediante el criterio de información bayesiano (BIC). Un análisis de residuos es efectuado con el objetivo de estudiar la bondad del ajuste del mejor modelo, del cual a su vez se obtiene la función de luminosidad buscada.

We solve the coordinate space Faddeev equations in the continuum. We employ hyperspherical coordinates and provide analytical expressions allowing easy computation of the effective potentials at distances much larger than the ranges of the interactions where only s-waves in the different Jacobi coordinates couple. Realistic computations are carried out for the Borromean halo nuclei 6He (n+n+\alpha) for J\pi = 0+-, 1+-, 2+- and 11Li (n+n+9Li) for (1/2)+-, (3/2)+-, (5/2)+-. Ground state properties, strength functions, Coulomb dissociation cross sections, phase shifts, complex S-matrix poles are computed and compared to available experimental data. We try to explain the differences in the 6He dipole strength function in refs. [1] and [2]. We perform the full basis calculation of the strength function with the same renormalized interaction as in [1] and show that the size of the basis, needed for converged calculations of the 6He continuum spectrum, is much larger than that for the discrete spectrum. The renormalized interaction of [1] therefore cannot be used for the continuum spectrum calculations with the same basis as for the ground state., Comment: 2 pages, 3 figures

We solve the Faddeev equations for 11Li (n+n+9Li) using hyperspherical coordinates and analytical expressions for distances much larger than the effective ranges of the interactions. The lowest resonances are found at 0.65 MeV (1/2+, 3/2+, 5/2+) and 0.89 MeV (3/2+, 3/2-) with widths of about 0.35 MeV. A number of higher-lying broader resonances are also obtained and related to the Efimov effect. The dipole strength function and the Coulomb dissociation cross section are also calculated. 13. The simplest 'strange' three-body halo

Abstract

The recently developed method to solve the Faddeev equations in coordinate space is used to study the weakly bound halo nucleus, the hypertriton (Lambda + n + p). The long distances are treated carefully to achieve convergence and high accuracy. We use several sets of two-body interactions which reproduce the deuteron properties and provide the low-energy Lambda-nucleon scattering data close to that of two of Nijmegen potentials. We show that the details of the potentials are unimportant unless the accuracy of the hypertriton binding energy is required to be better than 50 keV. We find that the most significant parameter of the Lambda-nucleon interaction, the singlet s-wave scattering length, must be within 10% of 1.85 fm, when the Lambda-separation energy from the deuteron is about 130 keV. Other details of the Lambda-nucleon interaction are less important for the hypertriton structure. The scattering length and effective range are computed for scattering of a Lambda-particle on a deuteron. Abstract

Los procesos estocásticos puntuales representan una herramienta de gran utilidad para el análisis de los factores de riesgo en los incendios forestales. En este artículo se estudia la ocurrencia de los incendios forestales a partir de un proceso de Poisson espacio temporal, en el que se considera la función de intensidad del mismo como una caracterización del riesgo de incendio a partir de técnicas paramétricas y no paramétricas. Finalmente, se considera un conjunto de datos reales, suministrados por el Ministerio del Poder Popular para el Ambiente a través del Instituto Nacional de Meteorología e Hidrología (INAMEH) en Venezuela, relativos a los incendios forestales producidos en un día en particular. Se estiman las funciones de riesgo basadas en el modelo propuesto y se generan mapas de riesgo de incendios lo cuales se ajustan a las características geográficas y climáticas del país. // Point stochastic processes represent a very useful tool for the analysis of hazard factors in wildfire. In this article, the occurrence of wildfire is studied from a spatial-temporal Poisson process, in which the intensity function thereof is considered as a wildfire hazard characterization based on parametric and non-parametric techniques. Finally, it is considered a set of real data, provided by the Ministerio del Poder Popular para el Ambiente from Instituto Nacional de Meteorología e Hidrologia (INAMEH) of Venezuela, relating to widlfire produced on a particular day. The hazard functions are estimated based on the proposed model and wildfire hazard maps are generated, which are adjusted to the geographical and climatic characteristics of the country.

It is one of the most important tools for studying the active galactic nucleus population and how they have evolved in time. Our investigation estimates this function through a probabilistic approach. We model the observed density of quasars using a bidimensional non-homogeneous Poisson Process in the space of absolute magnitude times redshift. A series of adjustable parametrized models are tested and we use maximum likelihood and the Bayesian Information Criteria (BIC) to select the best model, from wich the corresponding quasar luminosity function is obtained. Finally a residual analysis is made to study the goodness of fit.

This research literature review focuses on mass media and its development, the development of the Internet and its application to the Halodoc electronic health media platform. Globalization is also the reason behind the development of the Internet. The researcher also describes four eras with the best means of communicating time and technological determinism. There are pros and cons to using e-Health Halodoc as your e-Health media platform. The results of this research prove that Internet development and technology can not be separated. These two things play an important role in mutual development, especially in medical media.

Abstract

El presente estudio se centra en una investigación cuyo objetivo fue determinar la importancia de la innovación como elemento clave en la educación, a través de la enseñanza con b-learning. La metodología empleada fue de tipo descriptiva, considerando una muestra representativa de estudiantes de las universidades públicas y privadas del Estado Zulia en Venezuela. Entre los resultados, se obtuvo que las unidades de información manifestaron la necesidad de incorporar nuevas estrategias de enseñanza basadas en el b-learning así también que debe incorporarse tecnología de punta en el proceso de enseñanza aprendizaje, en función de desarrollar competencias para la gestión y el manejo de tecnologías en la formación gerencial. Se concluye que es necesario fomentar las competencias para el manejo de la innovación tecnológica en la formación gerencial, en aras de promover el desarrollo y consolidación de la denominada cultura de innovación en las universidades venezolanas para el alcance de las metas del milenio propuestas por las Naciones Unidas recientemente, así también que se promueve la inclusión en función de abarcar una mayor cantidad de estudiantes atendidos a través de esta modalidad de estudios. Se recomienda en tal sentido promover la incorporación de tecnologías educativa de punta, que considere el b-learning como modalidad de educación formal, propiciando así espacios virtuales para la enseñanza promoviendo la inclusión.

La investigación que se presenta a continuación tiene como objetivo principal establecer la relación existente entre la formación gerencial para el emprendimiento como responsabilidad social de las Universidades Autónomas Venezolanas. La investigación realizada es de tipo descriptiva, con un diseño no experimental, y transversal o transeccional, y se enmarca dentro de la tipología de campo. La población está constituida por una muestra de sujetos voluntarios de profesores y estudiantes de las Universidades Venezolanas. Entre los resultados obtenidos se destacan que la totalidad de los sujetos de información encuestados, manifestaron su disposición a participar en prácticas socialmente responsables que se organicen conjuntamente entre las universidades y el sector productivo, así también que la mayoría de estudiantes en torno a una serie de entrevistas aplicadas, demostró su disposición a diseñar y participar en actividades de responsabilidad social destinadas a enseñar como emprender a miembros de las comunidades organizadas. Para concluir, la investigación arrojó la necesidad existente para las universidades y las comunidades de formalizar una alianza estratégica que les permita comunicarse permanentemente con la finalidad de establecer actuaciones comunes en beneficio de la sociedad en general, para promover la creación de una nueva conciencia social y el crecimiento de un nuevo capital, que responda a las necesidades organizacionales en absoluta sostenibilidad con el ambiente.

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to introduce a software module based on lifetime analysis to provide useful information in the decision making of preventive maintenance tasks. The specic role of this software is to predict future values of a condition monitoring variable, to evaluate the future probability of failure, and to report information on the remaining lifetime of the targeted component and thus to contribute to the decision-making in the preventive maintenance tasks. Design/methodology/approach: The software module is integrated by two main submodules that are fed by historical data to estimate the selected statistical models, which are then used to perform prediction from the current data available. Finally, the outcomes of the modules are sent to the central system, where the decision-making process is accomplished. Findings: The information provided by the software comprises, estimates of the parameters of the underlying lifetime model and prediction of the failure probability and the residual lifetime of a target device of a machine. Practical implications: Increase availability and maintainability. Social implications: Reduction failure-related accidents, Reduction of energy consumption. Originality/value: This software module can be used and integrated to any central system to predict the failure probability and generating report to preventive maintenance in real-time by permanent executing of the online submodule.

Abstract

Understanding the behavior of interest rates is of central importance in finance. This is due to the fact that interest and forward rates serve as underlyings for many fixed income products. Furthermore, interest rate-based quantities may be used as numeraires when it comes to computing present values of future payoffs. An important macroeconomic factor which is likely to trigger interest rates is inflation. In this paper we extend a well-known continuous time interest rate model by incorporating inflation. Finally, we apply a statistical test to real data to explore the goodness-of-fit of the inflation-based model.

Abstract

El objetivo de la investigación es analizar la responsabilidad social como eje transversal en la formación gerencial de universidades venezolanas. La investigación fue descriptiva, de diseño transversal, apoyada en la revisión documental de artículos especializados en temas de responsabilidad social, logrando consultar la totalidad de universidades nacionales públicas venezolanas. Como resultados obtenidos, la mayoría de las universidades nacionales públicas mencionan la importancia de la responsabilidad social, aun cuando solo una minoría ha declarado ésta como eje trasversal en la formación de los estudiantes, es decir, ninguna la ha puesto completamente en práctica. Las universidades deben incorporar de manera inmediata, en sus diseños curriculares, el eje transversal responsabilidad social, y trabajar por capacitar a los formadores en responsabilidad social de manera permanente, para que estos puedan realizar transferencia de conocimiento para obtener aprendizajes significativos y constructivos. Superar viejos esquemas y profundizar la enseñanza de la responsabilidad social en los diferentes espacios universitarios; es imperante contar con profesionales competitivos y comprometidos con la preservación de la vida y responsables socialmente.

Abstract

The CoBiS (Coordination Committee of Turin Metropolitan Area Special and Specialized Libraries) is a network formed by 65 libraries. The CoBiS Linked Open Data project is a pilot for Piedmont Region and has the purpose to provide the Committee with an infrastructure for LOD publishing, creating a triplification pipeline designed to be easy to automate and replicate. This will be realized with open source technologies, such as the RML mapping language that uses Linked Data to describe the conversion of XML, JSON or tabular data into RDF. The first challenge of the project consists in making possible the dialog of heterogeneous data sources, coming from four different library softwares: Clavis, Erasmo, SBNWeb and BIBLIOWin 5.0web. The type of linked data is also different: bibliographic data, multimedia content, and archival data managed using xDams software. The information contained in the catalogs will be interlinked with external data sources, in particular Wikidata, VIAF, LoC and BNF authority files, Wikipedia and Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani. All this will make possible not only the connection of the information available within the CoBiS network with the rest of the world, but also will make CoBiS libraries actually visible and accessible online. Partners of the CoBiS LOD Project are: National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF), Turin Academy of Sciences, Olivetti Historical Archives Association, Alpine Club National Library, Deputazione Subalpina di Storia Patria, National Institute for Metrological Research (INRIM). The technical realization of the project is entrusted to Synapta, and it is partially sponsored by Piedmont Region. In its first step, it aims to promote in particular local holdings, without excluding in the near future a wider participation both on institutional and territorial level.

Abstract

A measurement of the underground muon decoherence function has been performed using the multiple muon events collected by the MACRO detector at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory. A detector-independent analysis is presented for different zenith regions and rock depths; this allows direct comparison with any model of hadronic interactions. The measured decoherence function is compared with the predictions of a Monte Carlo simulation based on data taken by recent collider experiments. © 1992 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

The investigation is framed within the research management training developed in the Management Development Research Group at the University of Zulia. The goal was to determine the teaching undertaken in the management training of school administration from the University of Zulia. The methodology was descriptive, by field study the population was comprised of students from the course of administrative systems at the school of administration at East Coast Lake Maracaibo in 2007. The results was obtained that knowledge management systems in the department regarding the organization, is a cornerstone to enhance their learning. We conclude that the learning strategies employed to manage the management tools such as organizational charts, administrative manuals, flowcharts etc.; let you be aware of the importance of procedures and processes in any organization and encouraged the teaching of undertaken as part of management training.

We formulate a method to solve the coordinate space Faddeev equations for positive energies. The method employs hyperspherical coordinates and analytical expressions for the effective potentials at large distances. Realistic computations are carried out for the Borromean halo nucleus 6He (n+n+α) for Jπ = 0±, 1±, 2±.

Abstract

We present the analysis of multiple-muon events collected with one supermodule (1013 h live time) and two supermodules (1195 h live time) of the MACRO detector at Gran Sasso, Italy. Multimuon rates are shown to be sensitive to primary-cosmic-ray energies between 50 TeV and several thousand TeV. Experimental data are compared with the expected rates from two composition models: a light (i.e., proton-rich) and a heavy (i.e., Fe-rich) composition. The predictions are based on a Monte Carlo simulation of the hadronic interactions of cosmic-ray nuclei, followed by a detailed tracking of the muons through the rock and the experimental apparatus. The results show good sensitivity of the MACRO detector to primary composition. The data exhibit a preference towards the light composition model. © 1992 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

A negative search using 1/12 of the eventual MACRO detector has yielded nuclearite flux limits of 1.1[times]10[sup [minus]14] cm[sup [minus]2] sr[sup [minus]1] s[sup [minus]1] for 10[sup [minus]10][lt][ital m][lt]0.1 g, and 5.5[times]10[sup [minus]15] cm[sup [minus]2] sr[sup [minus]1] s[sup [minus]1] for [ital m][gt]0.1 g. We have modified the formula of De Rujula and Glashow for the light yield of nuclearites to include the uv light absorbed and reemitted in the visible region, and proved that the MACRO sensitivity extends almost to the escape velocity of the Earth. Our flux limit, therefore, can be used to address nuclearites that are possibly trapped in the solar system.

Abstract

La investigación realizada tiene como propósito analizar la inserción de los sistemas de información en la formación gerencial, realizando para ello una revisión de los diseños curriculares de las universidades nacionales que forman profesionales en administración, para establecer la existencia de cátedras destinadas al manejo de los sistemas de información en las escuelas de administración; así como la respectiva revisión de elementos teóricos que pudiesen brindar soporte a este estudio. La metodología empleada es de tipo descriptivo y la delimitación física se concreta a la Universidad del Zulia, Universidad Rafael Belloso Chacin y Universidad Nacional Experimental Rafael Maria Baralt ubicadas en el estado Zulia. Se concluyó que existen muchas limitaciones para la enseñanza de los sistemas de información, producto de insuficiencia presupuestaria para la dotación de infraestructura y equipos de punta que permitan una formación gerencial en coherencia con las exigencias de la sociedad actual. Se recomienda proporcionar tecnologías de punta a estas instituciones de educación superior ya que sus docentes consideran de suma importancia estos recursos instruccionales para incrementar las posibilidades de adecuar los resultados del proceso de enseñanza a las necesidades del entorno.

Abstract

The MACRO detector is sensitive to wide range of ionizing massive particles in cosmic rays. These include “nuclearites” or strange quark matter. The negative result of a search lasting about 20 months using 1/12 of the detector has yielded a flux limit of 1.1 × 10{−14}cm{−2}sr{−1}s{−1} for strange matter with mass 10{−10}g < m < 0.1 g. For m > 0.1g, the limit is 5.5 × 10{−15}cm{−2}sr{−1}s{−1}. Since the velocity range of nuclearites to which MACRO is sensitive extends down to near the escape velocity of the earth, the flux limit not only applies to nuclearites of galactic or extra-galactic origin but also applies to nuclearites that are trapped in the solar system.

Abstract

Recent results on muon astronomy from the MACRO experiment at Gran Sasso are presented. An analysis has been performed to search for astrophysical point sources of neutral particles which could produce energetic muons through interactions in the Earth's atmosphere. In this paper, we present results on an all-sky survey for an excess muon flux; searches for steady state and periodic muon signals from several candidate point sources; and a search for a short term variability in the muon flux from the direction of Cygnus X-3.
