Whitehead does not provide us with a systematic account of the various types of experience to which the word 'memory' is applied. Nevertheless, he does provide us with a way of understanding the world, and living creatures who inhabit it, that places the discussion in a different context from the usual one: the diverse features of human experience that we call memory are developed forms of basic patterns of relationship that characterize all actual entities. I will first review the relevant features of Whitehead's conceptuality, then contrast the resulting view with its usual formulation, and then speculate about some forms of memory in Whiteheadian categories. Nationally and globally economic growth is not solving the problem of poverty. What other approaches can be recommended. A conference to discuss this question included William Rees, Herman Daly, Wes Jackson, Virginia Abernethy, and Majid Rahnema whose papers are included in this issue. Among the issues discussed is whether the contribution of nature to the economy should be taxed by government for the benefit of the poor; how current policies pauperize farmers and what can be done about it; and how population growth is related to economic prospects. My primary relation to Barbour's work is that of indebtedness and appreciation. He has reassured me that despite the vast changes in physics, the Whiteheadian perspective that has been so important to me as a Christian believer provides a valid way of understanding the physical world. If there is a difference between us, it is my greater emphasis on perspective and on the challenge of the Whiteheadian perspective to the ones that now dominate the sciences. The present global system aims at economic integration for the sake of maximizing 'growth' as measured by the gross national product (GNP). This leads to sustained efforts to destroy all national barriers to trade and to make all people interdependent. The results are widespread injustice and unsustainable pressures on the environment. The Brundtland Commission's proposal of 'sustainable development,' which involves expanding the entire economy five- to tenfold, will not work. Increasing the GNP does not correspond well with improving economic welfare, much less with social well-being. Realizing this noncorrespondence may make it possible to develop an economic order that is geared to meeting the needs of people rather than increasing production. Such an economy would be decentralized and organized from the bottom up.

Progressive Christians should redefine Christianity within the Christian framework to make it more relevant to the changing cultural and economic ethos. While conservative Christians cling to traditions, it is essential to reinterpret the beliefs due to industrialization and the increased demand for changes in the church's perception of gender and sexual orientation. Change in beliefs without removing faith from Christ is possible and essential as Christianity will atrophy in its absence.

Stanley Hauerwas's criticism that 'progressives' identify themselves with those who conform to the liberal society is right though he does not realize that the progressives' belief in a bright future is a hope more than an assurance. While human beings do not know everything and have limited choice, they should not stop using their powers of thought. For those with faith in God, speculative theology emerges from the faith and strengthens it.
