Shorebirds play a crucial role in assessing the health of coastal ecosystems due to their life history, behaviour, migratory patterns, and feeding preferences. Many shorebird species are experiencing population declines worldwide, driven by habitat loss and climate change. Understanding these challenges requires extensive data on their distribution and breeding ecology. The Kentish Plover (Anarhynchus alexandrinus) is a small shorebird that constructs its nests on sandy beaches. However, there is a scarcity of data regarding the reproductive ecology of this species in many areas, including the Molise region of Southern Italy. This study aimed at assessing the potential role of environmental variables derived from remote sensing to model current and future Kentish Plover nesting habitat suitability accounting for future scenarios of coastal dynamics in 2040. Data on Kentish Plover nests were collected along the Molise coast over several years and used to calibrate ecological niche models (ENMs) relying on environmental variables derived from coastal images. Kentish Plover nesting habitat suitability was mostly affected by distance from open sand, artificial surfaces, shoreline, and herbaceous vegetation and forested areas. The study predicts an average decline of more than 22% in suitable nesting environments for the Kentish Plover within the next two decades. Results indicated that our modelling approach can offer valuable insights for the conservation strategy of Kentish Plover in the region. In conclusion, we assert that preserving the nesting habitat of the Kentish Plover will not only safeguard this species, but also other species that inhabit similar environments, along with providing protection for coastal landscapes and associated ecosystem services. Government policies for marine fisheries have been implemented in Cabo Verde since its independence in 1975, with the aim to prevent overexploitation of wild fish species and promote sustainable fishing practices. Nonetheless, only minor amendments have been made to the legal harvesting size, considering biological sciences. This study, therefore, adopted a transdisciplinary approach to assess the political, ecological, and social dimensions of current fishery policy interventions applicable to the commercially valuable pelagic species Decapterus macarellus (mackerel scad). An ex‐post analysis of relevant fishery management policies targeting D. macarellus was conducted. This was supplemented by strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis conducted by key fisheries stakeholders. Stocks assessment was conducted on catch data before (2003–2007) and after (2017–2021) the policy interventions. This was followed by a survey of 175 fishery sector actors to understand their perception of the policies, compliance challenges, and recommendations for reforms. Results showed that although the mackerel scad landing size comparably increased, landing catches were on the decline. Most fisheries stakeholders are aware of the policies implemented and acknowledge their favorable developmental outcomes. However, certain gaps exist in the national marine fisheries policies. For example, there is an absence of follow‐up research on implemented fishing policies and a lack of monitoring data on the ecology and distribution of the mackerel scad, which hinders our understanding of the exact causes of the reported continual decrease in catches. There is, therefore, a need for regular monitoring of the environmental health of coastal and marine habitats to inform prioritization and/or reformulation of policy intervention measures to achieve intended conservation outcomes. The 3D geological model serves as a cornerstone, establishing the essential foundation and prerequisite for numerical simulations, analytical assessments, and evaluative procedures that are integral to the disciplines of geotechnical and geological engineering. The task of integrating vast quantities of multi-source, heterogeneous modeling data, the absence of stratigraphic division standards to meet varying precision requirements, and addressing the application demands of 3D geological models beyond the geological domain, pose significant challenges to the endeavor of 3D geological modeling. This is especially true for the construction of large-scale, high-precision 3D geological models at the urban level. Our research introduces a methodology for 3D geological modelling, with a particular focus on the dual-weighted interpolation technique for the integration of land-sea data and the establishment of a three-tiered coding system for bedrock layers. Focusing on Qingdao, a city characterized by its bedrock geology and situated along the eastern coastal region of China, our proposed method has successfully catalyzed the creation of models across four distinct scales: a comprehensive city-wide model covering an area of 11,282 square kilometers, five general models, two demonstration models, and five refined models. Further application cases have demonstrated that these models are not only capable of meeting the requirements of geological and geotechnical engineering across various scenarios, but also exhibit excellent interoperability and significant application potential when integrated with Building Information Modeling (BIM), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. The outcomes of this study are significant for the theoretical development and technological advancement of 3D geological modeling, and can also bring inspiration and reference to the work of 3D geological modeling in other areas. Policies aiming to restore ecosystems, achieve thriving fisheries and reverse biodiversity loss require knowledge of their former status and long‐term variation. As quantitative fish data is typically only available for recent decades long after changes may have occurred, a greater use of qualitative sources has been encouraged in marine historical ecology. We examined diverse historical information (including maritime history, fisheries reports, naturalists' accounts, recipes, nautical charts and newspapers) across a multi‐century time span (13th–20th century) for a wide range of species to document their long‐term trajectories in an understudied Northeast Atlantic ecosystem (Irish Sea coast of Wales). We find strong evidence of the loss of both a pelagic fishery for herring, which was of fundamental socio‐ecological importance since at least the 13th century, and the loss of significant multi‐species demersal and intertidal fisheries. Local, commercial and/or functional extinction has occurred for taxa spanning a wide range of diversity (crustacean, elasmobranchs, sturgeon, and teleosts), body size and ecological role, suggesting far‐reaching changes to food webs. This raises fundamental questions about the present‐day health and integrity of this coastal ecosystem and the long‐term viability of current fisheries which depend on a few shellfish species. Our century‐scale synthesis of qualitative data for multiple taxa allows the collective breadth of losses to be fully appreciated and may reduce the risk of 'shifting baselines'. Restoration to historical baselines may not be achievable, but our findings provide evidence of long‐term change relevant to policies for recovery, and prevention of further decline of fishes, fisheries and ecosystems. Globally, there is a move towards using local, native species for ecotoxicological risk assessments. Anthropogenic stressors from urban, agricultural, and industrial activities can impact the health of receiving ecosystems. Biomarkers can provide valuable insights as early warning signals of the potential environmental impacts of stressors. The aim of this study was to develop biomarkers in the green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus), a potential bioindicator of environmental health for coastal marine ecosystems in New Zealand. Reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) assays targeting the expression of genes involved in oxidative stress, xenobiotic transfer, membrane transportation, cellular and DNA response/repair, and endocrine disruption were developed and validated for P. canaliculus. We found significant modulation of genes associated with oxidative stress, xenobiotic transfer, membrane transport, endocrine disruption, and genotoxicity in P. canaliculus following 48-hour exposures to copper and benzo[α]pyrene. These results demonstrate the potential of P. canaliculus as a bioindicator species for environmental risk assessment. The gene expression assays showed potential as early indicators of exposure to the chemicals tested but require additional validation to assess their ability to predict effects at higher levels of biological organisation. Variations in estuarine carbonate chemistry can have critical impacts on marine calcifying organisms, yet the drivers of this variability are difficult to quantify from observations alone, due to the strong spatiotemporal variability of these systems. Terrestrial runoff and wetland processes vary year to year based on local precipitation, and estuarine processes are often strongly modulated by tides. In this study, a 3D-coupled hydrodynamic-biogeochemical model is used to quantify the controls on the carbonate system of a coastal plain estuary, specifically the York River estuary. Experiments were conducted both with and without tidal wetlands. Results show that on average, wetlands account for 20–30% of total alkalinity (TA) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) fluxes into the estuary, and double-estuarine CO2 outgassing. Strong quasi-monthly variability is driven by the tides and causes fluctuations between net heterotrophy and net autotrophy. On longer time scales, model results show that in wetter years, lower light availability decreases primary production relative to biological respiration (i.e., greater net heterotrophy) resulting in substantial increases in CO2 outgassing. Additionally, in wetter years, advective exports of DIC and TA to the Chesapeake Bay increase by a factor of three to four, resulting in lower concentrations of DIC and TA within the estuary. Quantifying the impacts of these complex drivers is not only essential for a better understanding of coastal carbon and alkalinity cycling, but also leads to an improved assessment of the health and functioning of coastal ecosystems both in the present day and under future climate change. As two significant pollutants, the increased concentrations of copper ions and microplastics in coastal waters pose a substantial threat to the health of marine ecosystems. This study explored the individual and combined toxic effects of copper ions and microplastics on the marine diatom Skeletonema costatum. The results indicated that copper ions at a concentration of 0.05 mg/L exerted a negative impact on the growth of S. costatum; however, the influence of microplastics on algal cell growth was more complex: there was no significant inhibition of algal cell growth observed within the first 72 h of cultivation, but a pronounced negative effect on cell growth was noted between 72 and 96 h, with high concentrations (10.00 mg/L) of microplastics even causing a premature stagnation phase in algal cell growth. When both pollutants were present simultaneously, their impact on cell growth was similar to that of the microplastic pollution group, yet the growth condition was better than that of the copper ion pollution group. Through investigation of adsorption rates and toxicity mitigation rates, it was found that the adsorption of copper ions by microplastics was a significant reason for the improved growth condition of algal cells in the mixed pollution group compared to the copper ion pollution group. However, in the later stages of cultivation, the inhibitory effect of microspheres on algal cell growth counteracted their mitigating effect on copper ion toxicity. This study provides a reference for evaluating the impact of microplastics and heavy metals on coastal ecosystem health and for revealing the interactions between different pollutants. This study investigated the distribution of sedimentary phosphorus (P) species along an area of a rapid current at the southern coast of Zhoushan Island. The objective of this study was to improve the understanding of P cycling in a zone of rapid water cycling. Results showed that the average percentage of each P form to total P (TP) was in the following order: apatite P (Ca-P; 52%) was found in the most abundant, followed by organic P (OP; 16%), exchangeable-P (Ex-P; 14%), detrital P (De-P; 11%), and iron-bound P (Fe-P; 7%). Ca-P showed a trend of an increasing concentration from a location at the west (ZS1 has mean Ca-P = 45.6 mg kg−1) toward the east (ZS2 has mean Ca-P = 82.69 mg kg−1) and south-east (ZS3 has mean Ca-P = 82.17 mg kg−1); De-P also increased from 15.12 mg kg−1 at ZS1 to 22.53 mg kg−1 at ZS2 and 27.45 mg kg−1 at ZS3, but the three bioavailable P species, OP, Ex-P, and Fe-P, decreased from the west toward the east of the coastal area. Results along the cores showed the occurrences of sediment P adsorption and release throughout the time span from the 1930s to the present, with an overall trend of decreasing Ca-P and TP from the bottom to surface sediments. There was a tendency of Ca-P formation at the expense of Ex-P and OP release during transport and organic matter decomposition. Simple Summary: The Pearl River Estuary (PRE) in China, a highly urbanized coastal area, presents a unique opportunity to study the effects of environmental changes on the phytoplankton com-munity. In September 2018, a field study was conducted to examine how the photosynthetic status and spatial distribution of these organisms varied from freshwater to oceanic waters. Dinophyta and Haptophyta were prevalent in seawater, while Chlorophyta and Cryptophyta dominated from freshwater to estuarine water. Bacillariophyta were found across all regions. Phytoplankton in the mixing zone showed signs of stress due to fluctuating environmental conditions, whereas those in freshwater and oceanic areas appeared more photosynthetically active. Human activities have in-creased nutrient levels in the estuary, leading to higher chlorophyll concentrations and more diverse phytoplankton communities upstream. Understanding these patterns helps us assess the health of coastal ecosystems, which is crucial for managing the impacts of climate change and human development on marine environments. The Pearl River Estuary (PRE) is one of the world's most urbanized subtropical coastal systems. It presents a typical environmental gradient suitable for studying estuarine phytoplankton communities' dynamics and photosynthetic physiology. In September 2018, the maximum photochemical quantum yield (Fv/Fm) of phytoplankton in different salinity habitats of PRE (oceanic, estuarine, and freshwater zones) was studied, revealing a complex correlation with the environment. Fv/Fm of phytoplankton ranged from 0.16 to 0.45, with taxa in the upper Lingdingyang found to be more stressed. Community composition and structure were analyzed using 18S rRNA, accompanied by a pigment analysis utilized as a supplementary method. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling analysis indicated differences in the phytoplankton spatial distribution along the estuarine gradients. Specificity-occupancy plots identified different specialist taxa for each salinity habitat. Dinophyta and Haptophyta were the predominant taxa in oceanic areas, while Chlorophyta and Cryptophyta dominated freshwater. Bacillariophyta prevailed across all salinity gradients. Canonical correlation analysis and Mantel tests revealed that temperature, salinity, and elevated nutrient levels (i.e., NO3−-N, PO43−-P, and SiO32−-Si) associated with anthropogenic activities significantly influenced the heterogeneity of community structure. The spatial distribution of phytoplankton, along with in situ photosynthetic characteristics, serves as a foundational basis to access estuarine primary productivity, as well as community function and ecosystem health. Maintaining the health of coastal aquaculture ecosystems is crucial for sustainable development. Therefore, establishing a specific ecosystem health assessment index system for aquaculture bays is paramount. This system allows for the evaluation of the health status of these bays and aids in the planning and restoration of fishery habitats. Utilizing the well-known "Pressure-State- Response" framework, a comprehensive evaluation index system with 14 indicators was developed. Additionally, the analytic hierarchy process and entropy weight methods were employed to assess the ecosystem health of Sansha Bay, a representative aquaculture bay in Fujian Province, China. The results revealed variations in health status across four zones in 2020, categorized as "good" or "excellent". However, the security index was more spatially distributed and classified from "fair" to "safety". Key indicators critical to sustaining the health of the aquaculture bay ecosystem included the regional environmental risk index, the proportion of industrial discharge outlets, the zooplankton species diversity index, the phytoplankton species diversity index, the molar ratio of phosphorus to nitrogen, and the size of nature reserves. According to the assessments of ecosystem health and ecological security, vigorous endeavors in aquatic ecology are paramount to ensure the enduring sustainability of aquaculture, with a specific emphasis on Zoning 1 and Zoning 4. These findings not only enhance and expand the methods for assessing the health of aquaculture bay ecosystems but also provide a scientific basis for the conservation of fishery habitats and the green, high-quality development of the aquaculture industry in Sansha Bay. The climate is changing, and our laws and policies threaten to leave behind vulnerable communities and ecosystems. About half of the people and imperiled plants and animals in the United States are in coastal counties. Coastal communities' ability to cope with the impacts of climate change will depend on how well local adaptation and resiliency laws and policies work to protect them from rising seas, flooding, saltwater intrusion, intensifying storm activity, and increased heat indices. At the same time, these very same adaptation laws and policies may inadvertently harm vulnerable communities and biodiversity. By 2040 -- when today's kindergarteners graduate college -- Florida's population will increase by 20% and sea levels will rise an additional foot. With its low elevation and location at the end of Hurricane Alley, Florida is "ground zero" for climate change impacts in the United States. The region's struggles with industrial pollution create additional risk factors. Marginalized communities and imperiled biodiversity are caught amid climate impacts and existing, dangerous infrastructure. Florida is an apt case study for exploring concepts such as managed retreat, social vulnerability, species extinctions, assisted migration, and adaptive management. This Article concludes by making general recommendations for local governments looking to proactively center their resiliency and adaptation efforts on the survival of vulnerable communities and imperiled plants and animals. River estuaries are dynamic and complex ecosystems influenced by various natural processes, including climatic fluctuations and anthropogenic activities. The Pearl River Estuary (PRE), one of the largest in China, receives significant land-based pollutants due to its proximity to densely populated areas and urban development. This study aimed to characterize the composition, diversity, and distribution patterns of sediment microbial communities (bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotes) and investigated the connection with environmental parameters within the PRE and adjacent shelf. Physicochemical conditions, such as oxygen levels, nitrogen compounds, and carbon content, were analyzed. The study found that the microbial community structure was mainly influenced by site location and core depth, which explained approximately 67% of the variation in each kingdom. Sites and core depths varied in sediment properties such as organic matter content and redox conditions, leading to distinct microbial groups associated with specific chemical properties of the sediment, notably C/N ratio and NH4+ concentration. Despite these differences, certain dominant taxonomic groups were consistently present across all sites: Gammaproteobacteria in bacteria; Bathyarchaeia, Nitrososphaeria, and Thermoplasmata in archaea; and SAR in Eukaryota. The community diversity index was the highest in the bacteria kingdom, while the lowest values were observed at site P03 across the three kingdoms and were significantly different from all other sites. Overall, this study highlights the effect of depth, core depth, and chemical properties on sediment microbiota composition. The sensitivity and dynamism of the microbiota, along with the possibility of identifying specific markers for changes in environmental conditions, is valuable for managing and preserving the health of estuaries and coastal ecosystems. Low-impact fishing gear, such as fish pots, could help reduce human's impact on coastal marine ecosystems in fisheries but catch rates remain low and the harvest of resources used for baiting increases their environmental cost. Using black seabreams (Spondyliosoma cantharus) as target species in the Bay of Biscay, we developed and assessed the efficiency of biodegradable biopolymer-based baits (hereafter bio-baits) made of cockles (Cerastoderma edule) and different biopolymer concentrations. Through a suite of deep and machine learning models, we automatized both the tracking and behavior classification of seabreams based on quantitative metrics describing fish motion. The models were used to predict the interest behavior of seabream towards the bait over 127 h of video. All behavior predictions categorized as interested to the bait were validated, highlighting that bio-baits have a much weaker attractive power than natural bait yet with higher activity after 4 h once natural baits have been consumed. We also show that even with imperfect tracking models, fine behavioral information can be robustly extracted from video footage through classical machine learning methods, dramatically lifting the constraints related to monitoring fish behavior. Recently, natural and anthropogenic pressures caused an apparent increase in the frequency and spread of red Noctiluca scintillans (RNS) blooms. Here, we describe this potential expansion and the associated environmental factors based on an extensive literature review (1857–2023). Our analysis suggests that Noctiluca increased over time in several Australian, Chinese and European coastal regions. We point to eutrophication, ocean warming and deoxygenation as possible drivers of these intensifications. Moreover, we demonstrate Noctiluca 's importance for coastal ecosystems: with competitive advantages causing fast and intense blooms, Noctiluca has the potential to alter plankton communities, influencing productivity in affected areas. Throughout our analysis, we identified major knowledge gaps that are relevant to assess Noctiluca : (i) challenges in determining its spatiotemporal evolution; (ii) limited knowledge about drivers triggering and ending blooms; (iii) scarce information about feeding, reproduction and interaction in situ and (iv) uncertainty regarding its contribution to carbon export. We hypothesize that these gaps are related to limitations in traditional sampling techniques, and we highlight the need for a holistic approach combining traditional with novel techniques like remote sensing and underwater cameras. Coastal ecosystems globally face pressures, with natural coastal habitats being replaced by engineered structures. While hard structures for navigation‐purposes and coastal defense can negatively impact native communities, they can also be applied in ecological restoration as artificial reefs. This way substrates may facilitate establishment of biogenic (shellfish) reefs and provide habitat heterogeneity in soft‐sediment ecosystems. In a 1.5‐year experiment, we introduced six different types of natural or biodegradable hard substrates in a subtidal soft‐sediment system. We compared the substrates with surrounding soft sediment and evaluated differences among substrate types using biodiversity indices, community composition analyses, and food web indicators. This offers a comprehensive understanding of how the introduced hard substrates affect ecosystem complexity. Overall ecological complexity indicators were higher in the second year of the experiment. We found a significant increase in species richness, community composition, and link density (number of feeding interactions per species) on hard substrates compared to the surrounding sediment. However, Shannon diversity index and food web connectance (measure of food web saturation) did not differ between substrates and the surrounding sediment. Although differences among types of hard substrates were small, certain species were uniquely associated with specific substrates with wood and granite performing best. While there was no establishment of epibenthic shellfish reefs within 1.5 years, we conclude that introducing hard substrates effectively enhances ecological complexity in soft‐bottom coastal ecosystems within that timeframe. The impact of climate warming on soil microbial communities can significantly influence the global carbon cycle. Coastal wetlands, in particular, are susceptible to changes in soil microbial community structure due to climate warming and the presence of invasive plant species. However, there is limited knowledge about how native and invasive plant wetland soil microbes differ in their response to warming. In this study, we investigated the temporal dynamics of soil microbes (prokaryotes and fungi) under experimental warming in two coastal wetlands dominated by native Phragmites australis (P. australis) and invasive Spartina alterniflora (S. alterniflora). Our research indicated that short-term warming had minimal effects on microbial abundance, diversity, and composition. However, it did accelerate the succession of soil microbial communities, with potentially greater impacts on fungi than prokaryotes. Furthermore, in the S. alterniflora wetland, experimental warming notably increased the complexity and connectivity of the microbial networks. While in the P. australis wetland, it decreased these factors. Analysis of robustness showed that experimental warming stabilized the co-occurrence network of the microbial community in the P. australis wetland, but destabilized it in the S. alterniflora wetland. Additionally, the functional prediction analysis using the Faprotax and FunGuild databases revealed that the S. alterniflora wetland had a higher proportion of saprotrophic fungi and prokaryotic OTUs involved in carbon degradation (p < 0.05). With warming treatments, there was an increasing trend in the proportion of prokaryotic OTUs involved in carbon degradation, particularly in the S. alterniflora wetland. Therefore, it is crucial to protect native P. australis wetlands from S. alterniflora invasion to mitigate carbon emissions and preserve the health of coastal wetland ecosystems under future climate warming in China. Copepods form the bulk of secondary production in marine ecosystems and are a major resource for higher trophic levels. Copepods are highly sensitive to environmental changes as they are ectotherms with a short life span whose metabolism and development depend on abiotic conditions. In turn, changes in their functional structure (i.e. functional trait composition) can have impacts on ecosystems. We examined changes in the copepod functional community in the North Sea over the past five decades, using a trait-based approach. We observed a shift around 1986–1988: the copepod community was initially dominated by larger herbivores, with a long development time, diapause ability, and highest abundances in summer. This community changed abruptly after 1986–1988, to a dominance of smaller carnivore taxa, with shorter development times, less ability to enter diapause, and that display higher abundances in autumn. This rapid reorganization could be driven by higher water temperatures, lower dinoflagellate abundances, and lower nutrient concentrations. These changes could impact adjacent trophic levels, such as phytoplankton on which several species graze or fish larvae, leading to a mismatch situation with consequences for fish recruitment. Mangroves provide essential ecosystem services including coastal protection by acting as coastal greenbelts; however, human-driven anthropogenic activities altered their existence and ecosystem functions worldwide. In this study, the successive degradation of the second largest mangrove forest, Chakaria Sundarbans situated at the northern Bay of Bengal part of Bangladesh was assessed using remote sensing approaches. A total of five multi-temporal Landsat satellite imageries were collected and used to observe the land use land cover (LULC) changes over the time periods for the years 1972, 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020. Further, the supervised classification technique with the help of support vector machine (SVM) algorithm in ArcGIS 10.8 was used to process images. Our results revealed a drastic change of Chakaria Sundarbans mangrove forest, that the images of 1972 were comprised of mudflat, waterbody, and mangroves, while the images of 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020 were classified as waterbody, mangrove, saltpan, and shrimp farm. Most importantly, mangrove forest was the largest covering area a total of 64.2% in 1972, but gradually decreased to 12.7%, 6.4%, 1.9%, and 4.6% for the years 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020, respectively. Interestingly, the rate of mangrove forest area degradation was similar to the net increase of saltpan and shrimp farms. The kappa coefficients of classified images were 0.83, 0.87, 0.80, 0.87, and 0.91 with the overall accuracy of 88.9%, 90%, 85%, 90%, and 93.3% for the years 1972, 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020, respectively. By analyzing normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), soil adjusted vegetation index (SAVI), and transformed difference vegetation index (TDVI), our results validated that green vegetated area was decreased alarmingly with time in this study area. This destruction was mainly related to active human-driven anthropogenic activities, particularly creating embankments for fish farms or salt productions, and cutting for collection of wood as well. Together all, our results provide clear evidence of active anthropogenic stress on coastal ecosystem health by altering mangrove forest to saltpan and shrimp farm saying goodbye to the second largest mangrove forest in one of the coastal areas of the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh. Microbial communities in subterranean estuaries mediate biogeochemical reactions of coastal groundwater discharging into the oceans; however, studies on their response to abrupt environmental changes caused by climate and land use alterations are still limited. In this study, we conducted a controlled laboratory study using combined geochemical and metagenomic approaches to investigate microbial structures and their metabolic pathways under a wide range of nitrate (NO3− ${{\text{NO}}_{3}}^{-}$) inputs, saline solutions, and incubation times. These factors served as proxies for land use, salinization of the shallow aquifer, and climate changes. We found a highly reducing habitat and an amplification of genes related to denitrification, sulfate reduction, and methanogenesis processes. Core communities consisting of Clostridia, Bacilli, Alphaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, and Desulfobaccia were observed across all treatments. The metabolic prediction of plant‐derived organic matter (i.e., tannin and lignin) degradation was not affected by NO3− ${{\text{NO}}_{3}}^{-}$ inputs or salinity because of it being implemented by core communities and the abundance of electron donors and acceptors. Quantification of denitrification genes shows that they are susceptible to NO3− ${{\text{NO}}_{3}}^{-}$ inputs and seawater ions. Long‐term incubation allowed sufficient time for microbes to degrade less labile DOM, promoting the re‐release of buried solid phase organic matter into the active carbon cycle and increasing the relative abundance of biofilm or spore‐forming taxa while decreasing that of rare taxa. Our results illustrate the sensitivity of microbial assemblages to environmental changes and their capacity to altering the C and N cycles in coastal areas, further affecting coastal water quality and ecosystem‐scale biogeochemistry. Plain Language Summary: This study investigated how microbial communities in subterranean estuaries (STE) respond to climate and land use changes. Understanding microbial responses is essential, considering microbes control the degradation of terrestrial‐derived solutes transported to the ocean. STE sediments collected from different seasons were incubated with different nitrate inputs, saline solution, and incubation times to represent changing groundwater quality, sea level rise, and groundwater residence time, respectively. The relative proportions of core microbial groups (Clostridia, Bacilli, Alphaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, and Desulfobaccia) were stable across all treatments; however, less adaptable groups did not survive long incubation times. Seawater addition negatively affected nitrate removal, while changing environmental parameters did not significantly impact plant‐derived organic matter degradation. Coastal ecosystems and human communities are threatenedworldwide by climate change, and shocks from social, market and political change. There is an urgent global need to promote resilient food production and livelihoods in the face of these shocks. Small-scale fisheries (SSF) in rural settings can be particularly vulnerable as they frequently lack the resources, rights and infrastructure to respond to shocks originating outside the focal systems. We examined ecological and social outcomes of environmental extremes in a SSF socioecological system (SES) by using long-term oceanographic (between 2010-2019) and ecological (2006-2018) data tracking change in a kelp forest ecosystem of Baja California, Mexico, and concurrent documentation of proactive and reactive actions of a fishing community organized in a cooperative. Results indicate a complex landscape of 'winners' and 'losers' among species and fisheries exposed to unprecedented environmental extremes, including marine heat waves and prolonged hypoxia, and a suite of adaptive actions by the local fishing cooperative, and others in the region, that have helped confront these rapid and drastic changes. Cooperatives have established voluntary marine reserves to promote recovery of affected populations and have invested in diversification of activities enabled by access rights, collective decisionmaking, and participatory science programs. Results indicate that local actions can support social and ecological resilience in the face of shocks, and that enabling locally-driven adaptation pathways is critical to resilience. This case study highlights the crucial importance of strengthening and supporting rights, governance, capacity, flexibility, learning, and agency for coastal communities to respond to change and sustain their livelihoods and ecosystems in the long run. The conservation state of an environment can be a key factor in maintaining the existence of some interactions between species. The relationship between the dung beetle Dichotomius schiffleri, a habitat‐specific species endemic to the Restinga ecosystem, and endangered, and its symbiont mites can serve as a model to improve knowledge about this issue. In this study, we investigated whether the conservation state of Brazilian Restingas, a native ecosystem of the coastal zone that has suffered from anthropic pressure and impacts due to irregular occupation by humans, affects the abundance of mites present on D. schiffleri. Beetles and their associated mites were collected using pitfall traps in Conserved and Degraded Restingas at nine locations in the Brazilian states of Espírito Santo, Bahia, Sergipe, and Pernambuco. The abundance of mites associated with beetles was significantly higher in conserved sites than in degraded sites. Our findings provide evidence that Restinga degradation can affect not only abundance of dung beetle species, as previously reported, but also the ecological relationships that can be established between dung beetles and mites. The habitat quality and hosts availability are some mechanisms that may explain the maintenance of the interactions between dung beetles and mites. Oil spills, which may be generated by various sources and can enter the ocean via various entry sites, are a significant pollutant that significantly influences marine ecosystems and can have far-reaching and disastrous consequences. The health of marine and coastal ecosystems is severely threatened by oil spills, regardless of whether they result from an accident or ships cleaning their tanks. Satellite synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) devices have a high degree of accuracy in identifying oil spills. These systems function regardless of cloud cover or sunlight and can differentiate oil from a stable sea surface. We present the OSD-DNN framework for monitoring the seas for signs of oil leakage. A convolutional neural network (CNN) with improved SPP Net architecture was employed for training and Testing during the analysis of the proposed method. After that, an improved cross-entropy Adam optimization is used on the model compilation. A strategy that employs Non-adaptive thresholds was applied to image denoising. The Contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLA.HE) method was used to normalize the histograms. The median threshold canny approach is used for the process of image segmentation. The CNN method was used for the process of feature extraction. The deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) method can see and identify oil spills. Plasticrusts manifest as a coating on intertidal rocks due to environmental exposure. They refer to crushed plastic debris that blankets rocks found along intertidal shorelines. This study significantly contributes to a better understanding of the occurrence of these novel plastic formations, shedding light on their potential pathways of formation during the Anthropocene era. The research provides comprehensive insights into the composition, origins, challenges, and effective management strategies for removing coastal plastic litter. Coastal environments are vital for sustaining key industries, including fisheries, mining, real estate, and tourism, through the provisioning of essential ecosystem services. However, the intricate interplay of bio-chemical and physical processes in these areas is susceptible to disruption by humandriven coastal developments. This disruption has gradually led to adverse consequences such as altered water movement patterns, land quality degradation, habitat loss, pollutant introduction, greenhouse gas emissions, and subsequent sea-level rise. With Cape Town's 240-kilometre coastline serving as a prime example of this complex relationship between coastal processes and livelihoods, this study employs innovative remote sensing and deep learning techniques. We use Sentinel-2 satellite imagery and the Deep Learning-based CoastSat Python toolkit, specifically leveraging the Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI) for sub-pixel level shoreline detection. Focusing on four critical Cape Town coastlines - Noordhoek-Kommetjie, Milnerton, StrandfonteinMonwabisi, and Strand, we assess and compare shoreline changes as detected by the CoastSat toolkit. Our findings reveal significant shoreline changes, with Strandfontein-Monwabisi experiencing the most substantial shift, approximately 284 metres. Noordhoek-Kommetjie exhibited a change of 110 metres, while Milnerton and Strand displayed similar changes, with 88 and 91 metres, respectively. This research not only offers valuable insights into Cape Town's dynamic coastlines, but also informs the strategic allocation of coastal management resources. Consistent data collection and analysis hold the potential to foster interactive coastal monitoring tools, enhancing the effectiveness and sustainability of coastal management practices. Mediterranean coastal lagoons provide important ecological functions and nature's contribution to people, but they are particularly vulnerable to multiple pressures due to their location at the land-sea interface and the many activities they host. Numerous research and monitoring programs have been conducted to study the functioning of Mediterranean coastal lagoons and to improve their ecological and chemical status, especially since the 2000s with the EU Water Framework Directive. However, many coastal lagoons still had not achieved a good ecological status by 2018. The soft-bottom benthic ecosystem plays a crucial role in the functioning of shallow coastal lagoons, regulating among others nutrient and oxygen fluxes, and hosting a high biodiversity. The alteration of this compartment by anthropogenic pressures is therefore a major problem. Through a literature review, this paper aims to summarize information available on the impacts of the five main human-induced pressures — i.e. exploitation of natural resources, habitat destruction, climate change, pollution and alien invasive species — on the soft-bottom benthic ecosystem in Mediterranean coastal lagoons (period 2000—2022), and to identify perspectives for future research that can contribute to the improvement of monitoring programs. Our review shows that resource exploitation and nutrient pollution have been the two most studied pressures whereas research is still underdeveloped on the impacts of climate change, invasive alien species, and contaminants of emerging concern. We also found that the recording and quantification of pressures is still poor, and that their cumulative effect is poorly understood. In terms of indicators, the microbial and microphytobenthic compartments are being overlooked and functional approaches could be strengthened. This review could help scientists realign research on pressures of priority interest and thus better assist stakeholders in managing coastal lagoons in times of global changes. Algal toxins pose a serious threat to human and coastal ecosystem health, even if their potential impacts are poorly documented in New Caledonia (NC). In this survey, bivalves and seawater (concentrated through passive samplers) from bays surrounding Noumea, NC, collected during the warm and cold seasons were analyzed for algal toxins using a multi-toxin screening approach. Several groups of marine microalgal toxins were detected for the first time in NC. Okadaic acid (OA), azaspiracid-2 (AZA2), pectenotoxin-2 (PTX2), pinnatoxin-G (PnTX-G), and homo-yessotoxin (homo-YTX) were detected in seawater at higher levels during the summer. A more diversified toxin profile was found in shellfish with brevetoxin-3 (BTX3), gymnodimine-A (GYM-A), and 13-desmethyl spirolide-C (SPX1), being confirmed in addition to the five toxin groups also found in seawater. Diarrhetic and neurotoxic toxins did not exceed regulatory limits, but PnTX-G was present at up to the limit of the threshold recommended by the French Food Safety Authority (ANSES, 23 μg kg−1). In the present study, internationally regulated toxins of the AZA-, BTX-, and OA-groups by the Codex Alimentarius were detected in addition to five emerging toxin groups, indicating that algal toxins pose a potential risk for the consumers in NC or shellfish export. Salinity stress is one of the critical environmental drivers of soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition in coastal ecosystems. Although the temperature sensitivity (Q10) of SOM decomposition has been widely applied in Earth system models to forecast carbon processes, the impact of salinity on SOM decomposition by restructuring microbial communities remains uncovered. Here, we conducted a microcosm experiment with soils collected from the coastal salt marsh in the Yellow River Estuary, which is subjected to strong dynamics of salinity due to both tidal flooding and drainage. By setting a gradient of salt solutions, soil salinity was adjusted to simulate salinity stress and soil carbon emission (CO2) rate was measured over the period. Results showed that as salinity increased, the estimated decomposition constants based on first-order kinetics gradually decreased at different temperatures. Below the 20‰ salinity treatments, which doubled the soil salinity, Q10 increased with increasing salinity; but higher salinity constrained the temperature-related response of SOM decomposition by inhibiting microbial growth and carbon metabolisms. Soil bacteria were more sensitive to salinity stress than fungi, which can be inferred from the response of microbial beta-diversity to changing salinity. Among them, the phylotypes assigned to Gammaproteobacteria and Bacilli showed higher salt tolerance, whereas taxa affiliated with Alphaproteobacteria and Bacteroidota were more easily inhibited by the salinity stress. Several fungal taxa belonging to Ascomycota had higher adaptability to the stress. As the substrate was consumed with the incubation, bacterial competition intensified, but the fungal co-occurrence pattern changed weakly during decomposition. Collectively, these findings revealed the threshold effect of salinity on SOM decomposition in coastal salt marshes and emphasized that salt stress plays a key role in carbon sequestration by regulating microbial keystone taxa, metabolisms, and interactions. In this study, we documented the diversity of bird species in the Eastern Cape coastal nature reserves (i.e., Hluleka, Dwesa, Silaka and Mkhambati nature reserves), and determined the potential role of each bird species in habitat maintenance using two functional traits (i.e., body mass and feeding mode) as the function's proxy. We applied the timed species count approach during bird observations, coupled with drive‐by surveys to maximise spatial coverage of each nature reserve over four years. To evaluate functional diversity, bird species were classified based on functional traits such as the adult body, and their potential ecological role derived from their feeding mode and habitat associations. Over 864 h, we accumulated 818 bird records containing 178 different bird species that were classified into 58 families with 32 species occurring in all nature reserves. Shannon–Wiener Diversity Indices showed very high overall species diversity across the nature reserves (H > 3.5) with no differences detected across sites. Although no significant correlations between vegetation changes measured through Normalised Difference vegetation Index (NDVI) in each nature reserve and the number of bird records, forest bird species were dominant (42.1%; N = 178) throughout years of observation and diversity remained high (H > 3.5). Bird species abundance only increased significantly across all nature reserves during 2018–2019. All four nature reserves had a similar distribution of bird functional traits with both high functional richness (FRic = 1), and divergence (FDiv = 0.8) and moderate evenness (FEve = 0.4). Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) demonstrated a positive correlation between bird sizes and functions with large birds mainly associated with predators and carrion. Small birds and medium birds had a similar composition of species in terms of functionality being seed dispersers across the nature reserves. A significant effect that insectivores and carrions displayed in MCA plots, suggest the availability of indirect pollination services. Despite extreme drought conditions across the country in 2019, NDVI levels remained largely consistent over time in these four reserves; and thus, they offer important refuge for birds during extreme climatic conditions such as drought. Mangroves stand out as one of the most diverse and biologically significant natural systems in the world. Playing critical roles in maintaining the health and productivity of coastal ecosystems, mangroves provide a range of services and functions, including habitat for local fauna and flora, food and other goods, carbon sequestration, and protection from natural disasters such as storm surges and coastal erosion. It is also evident that mangroves face several threats, which have already led to the gradual depletion of mangrove areas worldwide. Based on the analysis of current and related historical literature and data, this review summarises mangrove functions and the threats and challenges associated with mangrove management practices. Our findings suggest that coastal development, expanded aquaculture, deforestation, climate change, and other associated implications such as eutrophication, diseases, and pollution are the major factors posing threats to mangrove sustainability. We also highlight the various challenges, such as land use conflict, a lack of stringent regulatory actions, inadequate policy and government frameworks, and a lack of community awareness, that underlie ineffective mangrove management. The implementation of inclusive and coordinated approaches involving stakeholders from different backgrounds and interests, governmental and non-governmental organisations, and academia is essential for mangrove restoration and sustainable mangrove management by adapting mitigation strategies. Seagrasses are important for coastal ecosystem health and have significant economic benefits; however, they are undergoing important negative changes worldwide. The seagrass Thalassia testudinum comprises one of the main elements in submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) habitats, and it grows in monospecific and mixed meadows along the continental shelf of the Gulf of Mexico. In this study, T. testudinum monospecific and mixed meadows were monitored over a 2 year period to identify the abiotic and biotic conditions that may correlate with population parameters through the plastochron index (PI). Plants found in monospecific meadows had larger rhizomes and more flowers in comparison to those in mixed meadows, while the latter produced more leaves and larger shoots. The annual rate of change in biomass (Br) of T. testudinum in the monospecific meadow was 1.15 ± 0.03, which was slightly higher than that in the mixed meadow, with a value of 1.12 ± 0.03. T. testudinum in monospecific meadows tended to exhibit increased sexual reproduction, while vegetative growth and clonal reproduction were more common in mixed meadows. The results highlight that T. testudinum life-history strategies and establishment are affected by both biotic and abiotic factors like depth, temperature, and water nutrients. Environmental conditions are one of the main factors influencing the distribution of species across ecosystems. As humans modify both abiotic and biotic parameters across different ecosystems, it is essential to understand how anthropogenic activities can affect the distribution of species and/or populations. Changes to coastal ecosystems via urbanization can lead to rapid fluctuations in salinity of coastal areas due to the increased runoff of freshwater during storms. These fluctuations in salinity are known to promote shifts in the community structure and abundance of coastal fishes, yet questions remain on their role in shaping the genetic divergence of persistent populations. In this study, salinity of coastal watersheds was monitored in four different sites of the Pensacola Bay and Wolf-Perdido Bay drainage. Salinity records showed increasing salinity variability between sites with low, intermediate, and high urbanization. On each of these sites, differences in the mitochondrial markers cytochrome oxidase 1 (CO1) and control region (CR) were evaluated for the Gulf killifish, Fundulus grandis. The genetic results indicate the largest genetic differences were found among individuals at sites with intermediate and high urbanization, and among individuals at distant sites with intermediate and low urbanization, for CR. These results suggest that both geographic distance and differences in salinity regimes have the potential to promote genetic structure among killifish populations. Overall, the results from this study indicate that urbanization can have significant effects on the salinity regimes of the northern Gulf of Mexico, while highlighting the potential effects urbanization and geographic distance can have on genetic composition of coastal fishes. Marine riparian areas and coastal vegetation are essential and important to the coastal marine ecosystem, although their interactions and functions are still unknown and ignored in marine ecological studies and integrated management planning. In southeastern Brazil, allochthonous resources derived from riparian Atlantic rainforests bordering rocky shores have been observed in abundance together with the shallow subtidal rocky reef benthos. In this study, we used stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) to characterize the main components in a benthic trophic web on a shallow tropical rocky shore, to identify the proportional contributions of allochthonous (marine riparian vegetation—MRV) to autochthonous (phytoplankton and algae) inputs and to test which basal food resources contributed most to the marine community on the Atlantic Forest–rocky coast interface. We found eight major food resources and seventeen consumers that we classified into different groups according to their feeding habits and biology. Although the main source of basal resources in the benthic trophic web in the present study remained autochthonous, the allochthonous resources were assimilated by all consumers. MRV is thus an important resource for some primary consumers and it should be included as a potential source of basal resources in marine ecosystems adjacent to marine riparian areas. Assessing the health of coastal ecosystems is crucial for maintaining ecological balance. One significant indicator of water eutrophication is the distribution of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), which makes obtaining a complete three-dimensional spatial distribution of Chl-a essential for assessment. This study utilized the linear radial basis function (RBF-Linear) method to obtain a comprehensive and reasonable spatial distribution of Chl-a. The method was applied to obtain the three-dimensional spatial field of Chl-a concentration in the Bohai Sea in March, May, August, and October from 2016 to 2018. The distribution pattern of Chl-a concentration in the Bohai Sea displayed characteristic spatial and temporal variations. Spatially, high Chl-a concentration was most concentrated in coastal waters, particularly in estuaries and mariculture areas. Temporally, there were two peaks in March and August. The total Chl-a and areas with high Chl-a concentration in four sub-regions of the Bohai Sea were also calculated to enable a comprehensive assessment of the marine ecological environment. By analyzing the temporal and spatial variation of Chl-a in the Bohai Sea and evaluating the marine ecological environment, we confirmed the feasibility and rationality of RBF-Linear. Coastal ecosystems are subjected to an increasing number of anthropogenic drivers, including marine renewable energies and climate change (CC). These drivers can interact in complex ways, which may lead to cumulative effects (CEs) whose potential consequences on the ecosystems need to be addressed. We used a holistic approach—ecological network analysis (ENA)—coupled with a two-dimensional food web model—Ecospace—to conduct an ecosystem study of the CEs of CC plus the operation of an offshore wind farm on ecosystem functioning in the extended Bay of Seine (English Channel). Mapped ENA indices showed that CEs were not restricted to the wind farm area, i.e. where anthropogenic drivers are concomitant. CEs varied both in space and among ecosystem properties, displaying that ENA indices can distinguish between different cumulative pathways that modify ecosystem functioning in multiple ways. Moreover, the effects seemed to be tied to the structuring role of CC, and differed under the 2050 and 2100 conditions. Such changes resulted in stronger loss of ecosystem resilience under the 2100 conditions despite the benefits of the reef and reserve effects of the wind farm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Phytoplankton communities can serve as reliable indicators of the prevailing environmental conditions due to their short life cycles. Seasonal sampling was conducted at 26 stations from October 2014 to February 2016 at Kandla port situated in a creek, along the west coast of India. The post-monsoon and monsoon water temperatures were higher (30 °C) whereas pre-monsoon were lower (21 °C). The salinity varied from polyhaline (18–30; monsoon) to euhaline (30 to 45; non-monsoon). The strong currents, high tidal activity, shallow depth areas, and the creek backwater systems make this ecosystem well-mixed and turbid. The annual average trophic index (TRIX) scores indicated very good water quality and low eutrophication, except during pre-monsoon (2.3 ± 0.7 to 4.1 ± 0.2). Based on the cell size, the phytoplankton community was classified into two main groups, i.e., nano-microphytoplankton, which comprised forty-seven species (represented by diatoms, dinoflagellates, and silicoflagellates) and picophytoplankton including two groups (picocyanophytes and picoeukaryotes). The diatoms and picophytoplankton dominated the total biomass and cell abundance, respectively. Only the picophytoplankton exhibited significant seasonal variations in cell abundance and carbon biomass. The lowest monsoon phytoplankton abundance coincided with high turbidity and vice versa during the post-monsoon. The hypersaline pre-monsoon environment with lower annual temperature, relatively lower turbid waters, and increased nutrients favoured higher diatom diversity. These conditions also supported potentially harmful Gymnodinium sp. and bloom-forming Tripos furca and Pyrophacus sp. Overall, ten non-toxic but bloom-forming species were observed. The presence of pharmaceuticals in aquatic ecosystems mostly originates from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and such a situation can be responsible for significant negative impacts on natural ecosystems, such as estuarine and coastal areas. Bioaccumulation of pharmaceuticals, namely antibiotics, in exposed organisms is known to have remarkable effects on different trophic levels of non-target organisms such as algae, invertebrates and vertebrates, including the emergence of bacterial resistance. Bivalves are a highly appreciated seafood product, as they are fed by filtering water, and can bioconcentrate chemicals, being ideal for biomonitoring environmental health hazards in coastal and estuarine ecosystems. To use this sentinel species, an analytical strategy was developed to be used in accessing antibiotics, from human and veterinary medicine, and evaluate their occurrence as emerging pollutants in aquatic environments. The optimized analytical method was fully validated according to the European requirements defined by the Commission Implementing Regulation 2021/808. The validation comprised the following parameters: specificity, selectivity, precision, recovery, ruggedness, linearity, and the decision limit CCα, as well as the limit of detection (LoD) and limit of quantification (LoQ). Monitoring of coastal ecosystems is of particular importance for sustainable development and environmental management. Remote sensing, using satellite imagery, can play an important role in these studies. In this study, changes of qualitative parameters in Gomishan wetland and Gorgan Bay located in the southeast of the Caspian Sea were investigated using Landsat images. Based on the results of the range of chlorophyll-a and water temperature changes in both ecosystems, there was an increasing trend. Evaluating of Secchi disk (transparency) ranges showed a decreasing trend until 2018. Also, among the studied years, 2009 has the lowest fluctuations. Overall, the findings of this study showed that changes in water quality parameters of Gorgan Bay and Gomishan wetland had been affected by ecological conditions and human activities such as industrial-domestic and agricultural effluents. Context: Forested wetlands occurring on fluvial sediments are among the most threatened ecosystems in south-east Australia. The first quantitative diagnosis of forested wetland types in NSW was completed in 2005. Since then, there has been a three-fold increase in survey data on coastal floodplains, vegetation classification systems have been developed in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria, and methods for the assessment of ecosystem conservation risks have been adopted by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Aims: To ensure an evidence base that can support conservation decisions and national conservation assessments, there is a need to review and update the classification of forested wetlands and integrate classification schemes across jurisdictions. Methods: We evaluated the efficacy of a multi-stage clustering strategy, applied to data from different sources with largely unknown methodological idiosyncrasies, to retrieve ecologically meaningful clusters. We assessed the veracity and robustness of the 2005 classification of forest wetlands as a framework for national risk assessments over an expanded range. Key results: We derived a quantitative, cross-jurisdictional classification of forested wetlands based on a synthesis of 5173 plot samples drawn from three states and identified the status of our units in relation to IUCN's Global Ecosystem Typology. Conclusions: Our analyses support the retention of the five legacy types which are the basis for threatened ecosystem listings under the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 and Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. Implications: Our results will support revised assessments of current listings and facilitate their integration at state, national and global scales. This paper presents a revised broad-scale classification of forested wetlands occurring on floodplains in temperate subtropical south-east Australia and identifies relationships with vegetation types of finer thematic scale described in sub-regional classifications in Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales. Previous studies have revealed the importance of short‐term bed‐level change on the long‐term development of intertidal ecosystems. One of the recent advancements in the short‐term bed dynamics observation is the developments of laser‐based surface elevation dynamics (LSED) and acoustic surface elevation dynamics (ASED) sensors. These two sensors are developed to automatically monitor tidally induced bed‐level changes, and their measuring windows are during emergent and submerged periods, respectively. So far, there is no direct comparison or joint application of these two sensors. Therefore, in the current study, we first compare their observation precision in both laboratory and field conditions. Results show that both sensors' measurements are in good agreement with the manual measurements in the flume (R2 > 0.99) and field (R2 ≈ 0.70), indicating the applicability of each sensor in natural environment. Finally, a coupled system (i.e., combining LSED and ASED) is established in a mangrove wetland and both sensors show good agreement with each other (R2 = 0.69). Results also demonstrate that the coupled observation system can well capture the bed‐level change during emergent and submerged conditions, which provides detailed continuous data sets to study the bed‐level dynamics within a tidal cycle. Furthermore, large‐scale monitoring systems can also be established via mobile network module embedded in the sensor, providing real‐time monitoring for bed‐level changes, which is valuable to coastal morphological research and vital for detecting deterioration of coastal ecosystems and the services they provide to be able to apply adaptive management. Coastal fish communities are under increasing levels of stress associated with climate variation and anthropogenic activities. However, the high degree of behavioral plasticity of many species within these communities allow them to cope with altered environmental conditions to some extent. Here, we combine meteorological information, data from hydroacoustic surveys, and recordings of goliath grouper sound production to examine the response of coastal fish communities to heavy rainfall events in South Florida, USA, that resulted in the release of excess storm water into surrounding estuaries and coastal waters. We observed a nearly 12,000% increase in water column acoustic backscatter following a heavy rainfall event of September 16th, 2015. Interestingly, estimates of school backscatter, a proxy for biomass, increased by 172% with the onset of the perturbation. Schooling fish density also increased by 182%, as did acoustically derived estimates of mean schooling fish length (21%). Following the perturbed period, school backscatter decreased by 406%, along with schooling density (272%), and mean schooling fish length (35%). Hydrophone and hydroacoustic data also revealed that goliath grouper (Epinephelus itajara) spawning aggregations were persistent in the region throughout the duration of the study and continued to exhibit courtship behavior during the perturbed period. Our observations demonstrate the high level of resistance common in coastal species but raises new questions regarding the threshold at which fish communities and reproductive activities are disrupted. As coastal land use continues to increase, and the effects of global climate change become more pronounced, more Before-After Control Impact (BACI) studies will provide improved insight into the overall response of nearshore communities to future perturbations and the cumulative effect of repeated perturbations over extended periods. In Morocco, the marine environment has always been a major occupation for socioeconomic activities (industry, tourism, urbanization, etc.). Thus, this work displays a case study of Taghazout coast in the central Atlantic part of the country, which becomes the center of several development projects, such as the touristic resort Taghazout Bay. In the aim to assess the health status of this coastal ecosystem, a multi-indicator approach based on the response of biomarkers in the wedge clam Donax trunculus was adopted during two years (2016/2017). The undertaken investigations on the response of biomarkers (AChE, GST, MDA, and CAT) in the sentinel species D. trunculus showed an activation of defense mechanisms in this bivalve, which would imply exposure to chemical stress in this ecosystem. The monitoring of seasonal bioaccumulation of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and copper (Cu) by D. trunculus indicates that the bivalves collected have been exposed to these metal sources in the study area. In addition, the correlation study has reported a significant effect of environmental parameters on biomarker response. Vitellogenesis is the process in which female oviparous vertebrates synthesize the protein vitellogenin to develop egg yolk. In some species, vitellogenin has been used to investigate reproductive status, as a biomarker of clutch size and nesting frequency, and as a biomarker of exposure to endocrine-disruptive chemicals. The Diamond-backed Terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin) is an obligate coastal species that in the northern extent of its range nests in the spring and summer months. Diamond-backed Terrapins serve as a key indicator species of coastal ecosystem health; thus, furthering our understanding of the endocrine control of reproduction may inform biologists of the health and status of coastal ecosystems. The objective of this study was to quantify baseline values of vitellogenin and testosterone in Diamond-backed Terrapins during the nesting season, in the northern part of their range. Blood samples were taken from adult female terrapins from two populations in coastal New Jersey from June-August. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) were used to quantify vitellogenin (VTG) and testosterone (T) across the nesting season. VTG concentrations showed peak values in the earliest part of the nesting season, significantly declining through the summer before reaching basal values in August, with T showing a similar trend. This suggests that terrapins in New Jersey follow a similar reproductive cycle to other turtle species from temperate latitudes. Additionally, we found that larger females exhibited higher concentration of T and VTG than smaller females. This suggests that VTG and T are useful biomarkers of reproductive output in these animals. Lastly, we also noted that larger females tended to nest earlier in the nesting season than smaller females. We hypothesize that larger females may compete for resources more effectively and efficiently than smaller females, which may confer larger individuals a fitness advantage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coastal environments are highly recognized for their spectacular morphological features and economic activities, such as agriculture, maritime traffic, fishing, and tourism. In the context of climate change and the evolution of physical processes, the occurrence of intense natural phenomena adjacent to populated coastal areas may result in natural hazards, causing human and/or structural losses. As an outcome, scientific interest in researching and assessing multi-hazard susceptibility techniques has increased rapidly in an effort to better understand spatial patterns that are threatening coastal exposed elements, with or without temporal coincidence. The islands of Milos and Thira (Santorini Island) in Greece are prone to natural hazards due to their unique volcano-tectonic setting, the high number of tourist visits annually, and the unplanned expansion of urban fabric within the boundaries of the low-lying coastal zone. The main goal of this research is to analyze the onshore coastal terrain's susceptibility to natural hazards, identifying regions that are vulnerable to soil erosion, torrential flooding, landslides and tsunamis. Therefore, the objective of this work is the development of a multi-hazard approach to the South Aegean Volcanic Arc (SAVA) islands, integrating them into a superimposed susceptibility map utilizing Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) analysis. The illustrated geospatial workflow introduces a promising multi-hazard tool that can be implemented in low-lying coastal regions globally, regardless of their morphometric and manmade characteristics. Consequently, findings indicated that more than 30% of built-up areas, 20% of the transportation network, and 50% of seaports are within the high and very high susceptible zones, in terms of the Extended Low Elevation Coastal Zone (ELECZ). Coastal managers and decision-makers must develop a strategic plan in order to minimize potential economic and natural losses, private property damage, and tourism infrastructure degradation from potential inundation and erosion occurrences, which are likely to increase in the foreseeable future. Coastal areas provide important ecological services to populations accessing, for example, tourism services, fisheries, minerals and petroleum. Coastal zones worldwide are exposed to multiple stressors that threaten the sustainability of receiving environments. Assessing the health of these valuable ecosystems remains a top priority for environmental managers to ensure the key stressor sources are identified and their impacts minimized. The objective of this review was to provide an overview of current coastal environmental monitoring frameworks in the Asia-Pacific region. This large geographical area includes many countries with a range of climate types, population densities and land uses. Traditionally, environmental monitoring frameworks have been based on chemical criteria set against guideline threshold levels. However, regulatory organizations are increasingly promoting the incorporation of biological effects-based data in their decision-making processes. Using a range of examples drawn from across the region, we provide a synthesis of the major approaches currently being applied to examine coastal health in China, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. In addition, we discuss some of the challenges and investigate potential solutions for improving traditional lines of evidence, including the coordination of regional monitoring programs, the implementation of ecosystem-based management and the inclusion of indigenous knowledge and participatory processes in decision-making.
