Egy olyan esszét adunk most közre, amelyet Coase 1973-ban az Amerikai Közgazda sági Társaság éves közgyűlésén adott elő. A szöveg régi, ám a benne foglaltak saj nálatos módon ma épp úgy aktuálisak, mint annak idején. Valószínűleg ezért is dön tött úgy a szerző, hogy műveinek legutóbbi válogatott kötetében ismét megjelenteti. A magyar olvasók számára talán ismerősek lesznek az alábbi gondolatok. Ez nem csoda, hiszen egy másik chicagói kolléga, Stigler, idevágó gondolatait évekkel ez előtt már közreadták. A piac megítélése az értelmiségiek körében Platón óta nem változott. Vajon nincs itt az ideje, hogy újragondoljuk álláspontunkat? Bár ez a kér dés a hatvanas évek elején fogalmazódott, jól láthatóan szinte semmi sem történt ez ügyben. Az értelmiség öntelt magatartásának újabb kritikáját találjuk a következő rövid esszében. A Coase-ra oly jellemző következetes gondolkodásmód egy újabb iskolapéldáját kapjuk. A felvetett problémakör megválaszolása nem könnyű és a kérdés egyenesen kellemetlen. Nem tudjuk, hogy ki-ki milyen álláspontra helyezke dik Coase tanulmányának elolvasása után, de talán többen fognak másképpen vi szonyulni a piacokhoz. Remélni szeretnénk, hogy ennek a rövid esszének a közrea dásával az áruk piacának mind szabadabb működéséhez magunk is hozzá tudtunk járulni., An essay read by Coase at the 1973 meeting of the American Economic Association is now published here. The text is rather old, but its contents is, unfortunately, as topical as it had been at the time of its original publication. It is probably for this reason that the author has republished it in the latest volume of his selected works. The ideas reviewed may perhaps be familiar to Hungarian readers. No wonder, as the relevant ideas of another Chicago colleague, namely those of Stigler, had been published years ago. He said that the judgement of the market had not changed from the times of Platon and asked whether it was not time to reconsider our standpoint. Although this question had been asked in the early sixties, almost nothing perceptible happened in this subject since then. In the short essay below a new critique of the conceited behaviour of intellectuals is given. A new typical example can be found for the method of consistent reasoning so characteristic of Coase. It is not easy to answer the problems raised, the question itself is straightly inconvenient. It cannot be known what standpoints will be taken by someone after having read Coase s study, yet more people are expected to take a different stand towards markets. Let us hope that by publishing the short essay the editors have contributed to an ever freer operation of commodity markets.

El presente artículo aborda la expansión de los límites de la economía, la cual se refleja en la cada vez mayor participación de los economistas en otras ciencias sociales. El autor niega tajantemente que esta migración de los economistas a otras disciplinas se deba a la resolución de todos los problemas del sistema económico. El autor asevera además que en la medida en que la expansión de la Economía solo se deba solo al uso de técnicas o métodos propios de esta ciencia, esta tendencia podría ir en retroceso. El autor concluye en que los economistas deben seguir expandiendo su rango de estudio, no con el fin de contribuir con otras ciencias sociales, sino buscando comprender mejor el sistema económico. Esto tendrá como consecuencia la continua expansión de la Economía hacia otras ciencias sociales. This article discusses the expansion of the boundaries of Economics, which is reflected in the growing participation of economists in other social sciences. The author emphatically denies that this migration of economists to other disciplines is due to the resolution of all the problems of the economic system. The author also states that to the extent that the expansion of economics is only due to the use of its techniques or methods, this trend could even go in reverse. The author concludes that economists should continue to expand its range of study, not in order to contribute to other social sciences, but seeking a better understanding of the economic system. This will result in the continued expansion of Economics towards other social sciences.

This brief provides an economic analysis of the main feature of the Copyright Term Extension Act of 1998 ('CTEA'), a twenty-year extension of the copyright term for existing and future works. Taken as a whole, the authors believe that it is highly unlikely that the economic benefits from copyright extension under the CTEA outweigh the additional costs.
