12. Variation in needle anatomy of scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) populations according to habitat and altitudinal zones in Türkiye

Abstract

SummaryIn this study, eight Scots pine populations from Turkiye were studied to explore the influence of different habitats and altitudinal zones on the needle anatomical traits. A total of 496 needles belonging to 64 individuals were examined using light microscopy with the aim to score variability of sixteen needle anatomical traits. Variance analysis showed significant differences in needle thickness, needle width, resin canal number, resin canal diameter, central cylinder width, central cylinder thickness, endodermis cell number, endodermis width and endodermis thickness of eight populations depending on habitat zones. However, only resin canal diameter, endodermis width and endodermis thickness differ significantly in examined populations depending on altitudinal gradients. Cluster analysis showed the greatest similarities between the Bolu-Aladağ and Ardahan-Yalnızçam populations, and the most distinguishable population was the Giresun-Espiye population based on the anatomical characteristics of the needles. Although principal component analysis showed that needle width, central cylinder width, needle thickness, and central cylinder thickness had the greatest influence on the delimitation of Scots pine populations distributed in Turkiye, discrimination analysis did not separate the examined populations depending on the anatomical characteristics of the needles., SažetakU ovoj studiji proučavano je osam populacija običnog bora iz Turske, kako bi se istražio utjecaj zona staništa I admorske visine na anatomske značajke iglica. Svjetlosnim mikroskopom promatrano je ukupno 496 iglica uzorkovanih sa 64 stabla, s ciljem utvrđivanja varijabilnosti dieciséis anatomskih karakteristika. Analiza varijance pokazuje da postoje značajne razlike u debljini iglica, širini iglica, broju smolnih kanala, promjeru smolnih kanala, širini središnjeg cilindra, debljini središnjeg cilindra, broju stanica endoderme, širini endoderme i debljini endoderme u osam populacija ovisno o zonama staništa. Međutim, jedino se promjer smolnog kanala, širina endodermisa i debljina endodermisa značajno razlikuju u ispitivanoj populaciji, ovisno o visinskim gradijentima. Klasterska analiza pokazala je najveće sličnosti između populacija Bolu-Aladağ i Ardahan-Yalnızçam, a najistaknutija populacija bila je populacija Giresun-Espiye na temelju anatomskih značajki iglica. Iako je analiza glavnih komponenti pokazala da širina iglice, širina središnjeg cilindra, debljina iglice i debljina središnjeg cilindra imaju najveći utjecaj na razlikovanje populacija običnog bora rasprostranjenih u Turskoj, diskriminantnom analizom ispitivane populacije nisu razdvojene uzimajući u obzir anatomske značajke iglica.

Abstract

Çalışmanın amacı: Bu çalışma Türkiye’nin yabancı bitkilerine katkı sağlamayı amaçlamaktadır. Çalışma alanı: Kuzeydoğu Anadolu (Kemalpaşa/Artvin)’nde yapraklı ormanlarda dere boyları ve yol kenarları. Materyal ve yöntem: Bu çalışmada kullanılan materyaller, 2020 ve 2021 yıllarında devam eden bir proje çalışması sürecinde toplanmıştır. İlgili literatür kullanılarak teşhis edilen örnekler Karadeniz Teknik Üniversitesi KATO ve KTUB Herbaryumlarına konulmuştur.Temel Sonuçlar: Spiraea japonica L. f. (Rosaceae), doğal habitatlardan Türkiye florası için yeni bir yabancı tür olarak rapor edilmektedir.Araştırma vurguları: Bu tür, yaygın şekilde Avrupa ve Türkiye’de süs bitkisi kullanılmakta olan Japon Keçisakalı’nın KD Anadolu’nun doğal habitatlarına yerleştiğini ortaya koymaktadır, Aim of study: This study aimed to contribute the alien flora of Türkiye.Area of study: Broadleaf forest along streamside and roadside of Kayaköy (Kemalpaşa/Artvin) in NE Anatolia.Materials and methods: Samples collected from four adjacent areas during the excursion on an ongoing project in the years 2020 and 2021 were used in the present study. Voucher were identified using relevant literatures and stored in the herbarium of KATO and KTUB at Karadeniz Technical University.Main results: Spiraea japonica L. f. (Rosaceae) is reported from natural habitat as a new alien species for the flora of Türkiye. Research highlights: This study reveals the introduction of Japanese spirea, widely used as ornamental plants in European countries including Türkiye, into the natural habitat in NE Anatolia.

17. Two new dihydroisocoumarins and terpenoids from Scorzonera longiana Sümbül an endemic species to Turkey and their antimicrobial activity.

Abstract

Two new dihydroisocoumarins (scorzolongin I (1), and scorzolongin II (2)) and nine known compounds (3′,5′-dimethoxy hydrangenol (scorzolongin III, 3), cladantholide (4), dammar-24-ene-3β-ol (5), taraxasterol (6), β-sitosterol (7), mangifgerursanone (8), and a mixture of α-amyrenone (9a), β-amyrenone (9b), and dammar-24-ene-3-one (9c) in about 1:1:2 ratio) were identified from the dichloromethane fraction of Scorzonera longiana. The structure of all compounds (1–9a–c) were elucidated by extensive 1D and 2D NMR (1H, 13C/APT, COSY, HMBC, HSQC, and NOESY) spectroscopy, UV, FT-IR, and LC-QTOF-MS data and by comparison of their NMR data with the literature. These compounds have been isolated from S. longiana for the first time. An antimicrobial assay against eight microorganisms was applied to isolated compounds 1–3. Scorzolongin I, and scorzolongin II, and scorzolongin III showed notable activity against gram (-) (Escherichia coli and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis) and fungi (Candida albicans, Saccharomyces cerevisiae) with 20 mm inhibition zone each. Scorzolongin II (2) exhibited strong activity against E. coli, Y. pseudotuberculosis, Mycobacterium smegmatis C. albicans, S. cerevisiae with MIC value of 33.8 μg/mL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bu çalışmada, halofitik endemik Scorzonera hieraciifolia (Asteraceae)’nın morfolojisi, küresel ölçekteki tehtit seviyesi ve taksonomik durumu yeni veriler ışığında ele alınmıştır. Türün doğal yayılış gösterdiği alanlardan yeni toplanan ve ulusal/uluslararası herbaryumlarda saklanan örnekler üzerinden yapılan detaylı incelemeler S. hieraciifolia taksonunun kısa kıvrık tüylü (crisped) gövde tabanı; basit (lanseolat, ovat veya eliptik) veya birleşik (pinnat derin linear parçalı) yaprak ayası; ovat ve ucu boynuzsu uzantılı dış fillarileri (corniculate); tüysüz veya seyrek uzun kıvrık yünsü tüylü (lanate), 4-6 mm uzunlukta, siğilli (verrucose) yüzey süslemeli ve saplı (stipitate) akenleri ile karakterize olduğunu göstermiştir. Türün halihazırda tuzlu bataklık ve bozkır alanlarda tespit edilen popülasyonlarının (10 farklı alan) güçlü olduğu ancak küresel iklim değişimleri etkisiyle tuzcul alanlarda oluşabilecek değişimlerden etkilenebileceği öngörülerek küresel ölçekte tehdite yakın (NT) kategorisinde değerlendirilmiştir. Gerek literatür gerekse TÜBİTAK tarafından desteklenen proje kapsamında elde edilen güncel veriler değerlendirilerek türün yayılış alanları ortaya konulmuştur. Son olarak S. hieraciifolia yakın (akraba) türler ile morfolojik ve korolojik açısından karşılaştırılarak taksonomik durumu netleştirilmiştir., In this study, the morphology, global threat level and taxonomic status of the halophytic endemic Scorzonera hieraciifolia (Asteraceae) was investigated of new data. Detailed examinations on newly collected samples from the natural areas of the species and the specimens kept in national/international herbaria indicated that S. hieraciifolia is characterized by crisped hairs at the stem base; simple (lanceolate, ovate or elliptical) or compound (pinnate with deeply linear segments) leaves, ovate and corniculate outer phyllaries; glabrous or lanate, 4-6 mm length, verrucose and stipitate achenes. The populations of the species currently detected in salt marsh and steppe areas (10 different areas) are appraised strong, however considering that it could be affected by changes that may occur in saline areas due to global climate changes. It has evaluated in near threatened (NT) category in a global scale. The distribution areas of the species were revealed by evaluating both the literature and current data obtained within the scope of the project supported by TUBITAK. Finally, the taxonomic status of S. hieraciifolia has been clarified by comparing with close (relative) species in terms of morphology and chorology.

21. Improvements in the phylogeny of Epilobium and Chamaenerion inferred from nrDNA and cpDNA data focusing on Türkiye.

Abstract

Epilobium and Chamaenerion included 165 and 8 species over the world, respectively. The members of the genera are distributed particularly in moist habitats from subpolar to tropical regions. This paper aims to provide improvements in the phylogeny of the genera Epilobium and Chamaenerion using Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) of nuclear DNA and matK gene sequence data evaluation with maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian inference criterations. A total of 188 individual accessions belonging to 28 taxa were newly generated and 110 sequences imported from GenBank (NCBI) were analysed. The nrDNA and plastid DNA gene trees supported to treat Epilobium and Chamaenerion as separate genera in two well-supported clades. The matK analyses revealed a better resolution than nrDNA ITS within the Chamaenerion clade and supported the inclusion of C. angustifolium in the sect. Chamaenerion. However, most of the examined species mostly fell into the polytomy in both trees excluding E. roseum subsp. consimile which should be considered a distinct species in the Epilobium contrary to morphological treatment in many national flora books. Both phylogenetic trees also support distinguishing E. prionophyllum from E. anatolicum previously treated as a subspecies of E. anatolicum. In conclusion, these preliminary phylogenetic analyses have contributed significantly to the determination of the limits of members belonging to Epilobium and Chamaenerion distributed in Türkiye. 35. Population variability of scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in Turkey according to the needle morphology

Abstract

In the present study, needle variation of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L., Pinaceae) populations in Turkey was investigated. From selected eight populations, a total of 1314 needles belonging to 206 trees were examined. Four morphological needle traits were measured and analyzed to describe the population diversity and differentiation. Analyzed morphological traits showed significant variability. The trees within populations differ significantly in all analyzed needle characteristics, while the differences between populations were significant for the three of four studied characteristics. Present findings revealed that needle length, needle width and the ratio of needle length to needle width showed clinal variation in response to altitudinal gradients. Populations from higher altitudes were characterized with the smaller and wider needles as compared to the populations from lower altitudes. The results of this study could be valuable baseline data for the development of more efficient management plans for this forest tree species., U radu je istražena varijabilnost prirodnih populacija običnoga bora (Pinus sylvestris L., Pinaceae) u Turskoj s obzirom na morfologiju iglica. U istraživanje je ukupno uključeno osam populacija, 206 stabala i 1314 iglica. Kako bi se utvrdila raznolikost i strukturiranost populacija izmjerene su i analizirane četiri značajke iglica. Istraživanjem je utvrđena značajna varijabilnost te da se istraživane populacija, kao i stabla unutar populacija, statistički značajno razlikuju. Izuzetak čini značajka dužina rukavca za koju nisu potvrđene razlike na međupopulacijskoj razini. Dobiveni rezultati također upućuju na to da značajke dužina i širina iglice te odnos dužine i širine iglice pokazuju klinalnu varijabilnost s obzirom na nadmorsku visinu. Populacije s viših nadmorskih visina odlikovale su se kraćim i debljim iglicama u odnosu na populacije s nižih nadmorskih visina. Općenito, rezultati ovog istraživanja mogu poslužiti kao vrijedna osnova za određivanje i razvijanje smjernica za učinkovitije planove gospodarenja ovom važnom šumskom vrstom drveća.

41. Contribution to chromosome numbers and phylogeny of Turkish Vincetoxicum Wolf (Apocynaceae, Asclepiadoideae)

Abstract

We report chromosome counts for ten taxa of Vincetoxicum sensu stricto (s. str.) (Apocynaceae) from Turkey (of which two are endemic), including the first chromosome counts for V. canescens subsp. pedunculata, V. funebre, V. fuscatum subsp. boissieri, V. parviflorum and V. tmoleum. Two taxa of V. fuscatum proved to be tetraploid (2n=44) and the remaining eight taxa diploid (2n=22). Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on nrDNA (ITS) and cpDNA (trnT-trnL) (including 31 newly generated sequences) confirm the position of the Turkish Vincetoxicum in the Vincetoxicum s. str. clade. Vincetoxicum fuscatum, V. parviflorum, V. speciosum, as well as the Turkish endemic V. fuscatum subsp. boissieri, were clearly resolved as species-level clades, whereas the delimitation of the rest of the Turkish taxa was less clear based on molecular data.
