Abstract

With 32 images, this photo essay tells the story of the rediscovery and rehabilitation of the Clydesdale horse. Some of the very best things languish, hidden in plain sight, waiting to be noticed, brought into the light and put to work – which is why they emerged in the first place. Serendipity led the author to rekindle an association with a horse from childhood, the Clydesdale. It turned out to be a Trojan horse, with considerable previously untapped potential. This horse from the past has a very bright future. It represents a showcase for its own kind, for other rare and endangered breeds, and for the humans who maintain them. Clydesdale horses provide us with a widened perspective on how to 'do' economic development, encompassing place-making, heritage, skills, education, wellbeing, and horsemanship. 2. Diagnosis and treatment of biaxial keratomas in the left fore foot of a 15-year-old Clydesdale mare.

Abstract

A 15-year-old Clydesdale mare presented for further diagnostics and treatment of waxing and waning lameness and recurrent subsolar abscesses. Radiographs and computed tomography revealed biaxial masses extending from the hoof capsule, causing bone resorption of the distal phalanx. Surgery was performed to remove the masses and post operative care included regional limb perfusions, systemic antibiotics and therapeutic shoeing. Histopathology was consistent with the diagnosis of keratoma for each of the masses; this is the first case of confirmed biaxial keratomas. Two months after surgery the horse is sound at the walk and is expected to return to full function within the next year. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This special midsummer issue highlights the research conducted by each of the College's departments with a summary article for each of the departments. The special events of the month were the activities of Farm and Home Week and the Alumni Day reunion weekend. Photographs for both events are included in this issue. During the Alumni Weekend, several classes held reunions, the new Zavitz Hall was dedicated to Dr. Zavitz, and Class of 1912 held its silver jubilee. Provided in this issue are the biographies for each of the alumni for the Class of 1912. Dr. J. B. Reynolds delivered an address to the alumni regarding the history of the O. A. C. and the Macdonald Institute. The Farm and Home Week events were a success. The Macdonald Institute column reports on the Homecoming Day, Dr. Jessie Brodie's speech on food fads, and the alumnae reunion. O. A. This issue begins with the prize winning speech from the public speaking contest regarding the creation of a provincial co-operative livestock marketing pool.
