Today, expectations from textile products have increased and the comfort features of clothes have gained more importance, especially for leisure and sports clothes. Therefore, the liquid moisture transmission of clothes is quite important, which has a significant effect on the body's ability to cool itself and the user's feeling cold after sweating. A new test instrument “3D-MMD” (3 Dimension Moisture Mapping Device), that measures the liquid moisture transmission feature of the fabrics in multidirection is introduced in this paper. The developed system includes two thermal cameras that allow measurement below and above of the sample. When the test liquid is dropped on the sample, the heat transfer occurs and due to the heat transfer during the transmission of moisture, the surface temperature of wetted and non-wetted parts of the fabric changes. This change is detected in the form of infrared data with the help of thermal cameras and converted into an electronic image. The wet area can be easily created by processing the images of the color visuals coming instantly from the thermal camera. The patent for this new method has been registered by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TR2020/21004). Meanwhile, the international patent application process continues (PCT/TR2021/051223).

Recently, clothing development 3D printing and the evaluation of its physical characteristics have been explored. However, few studies have tackled thermal comfort, which is a major contributor to the wearers' comfort. Therefore, this study was designed to suggest effective materials and hole sizes for clothing obtained by 3D printing to maintain a comfortable clothing environment. In particular, two main variables, namely five different materials and three-hole sizes, were analyzed. All samples were placed on a hot plate (36 °C), and their surface temperature and humidity were measured for 10 min. The samples with only thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) achieved the largest temperature change of 3.2~4.8 °C, whereas those with ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) foam exhibited the lowest temperature change of −0.1~2.0 °C. Similarly, the samples with only TPU showed the greatest humidity change of −0.7~−5.5%RH. Moreover, the hole size had a larger effect on humidity change than material type. The samples with large holes achieved the largest humidity change of −4.4%RH, whereas the samples without holes had the smallest humidity change of −1.5%RH after 10 min (p < 0.001). Comfort is the prime need in clothing. It is affected by the properties of fibers, yarns, and fabrics. A good understanding of these factors is essential in the design and conception of functional clothes. Fabric design serves as a manufacturing tool to meet several end-use requirements. The construction specifications and design of knitted fabrics greatly influence the comfort level of the end-use garment. This study aims to investigate the effect of the knitting stitch type and the dyeing process on the clothing comfort of knitted fabrics. For this purpose, five structures were prepared by combining plain, float and tuck stitches: plain jersey, cross miss 1 × 1, single cross tuck, weft lock knit and Lacoste. Then, yellow, and black dyeing were applied. The investigated wear comfort properties were the drying time, the air permeability and the relative water vapor permeability. Tests were conducted on the finished and on domestically washed fabrics. The data obtained were statistically evaluated with Pearson correlation, paired t -test, analysis of variance analysis and the Tukey test. The results showed that tucked fabrics have the longest drying time combined with the lowest air and water vapor permeability. Black variants showed better drying behavior and higher water vapor permeability. Analysis of variance results showed that the structure has a significant effect on clothing comfort. However, the dyeing process exerts a significant influence only on the drying time and the relative water vapor permeability. Wearing clothes that absorb or block harmful UV radiation is one of the most effective forms of protection against sun damage and skin cancer. In the current study, sustainable processes which will provide high clothing comfort and a sufficient level of UV protection for fabrics used in production of lightweight sun-protective summer clothing were proposed. In accordance with the scope of the study, structural properties, low-stress mechanical properties, surface characteristics, permeability, and UV-protection properties of three woven fabrics produced with different weft settings and lyocell ratios were determined. The fabric type which had the most desirable results was selected for dyeing experiments. Avocado (Persea americana) seed was used as an ecofriendly source for dyeing and UV-protective functionalization of cotton/lyocell blend fabric. To obtain different hues, the fabrics were mordanted according to two different recipes using magnesium sulphate and ferrous sulphate and dyed with the natural colorant extracted from avocado seeds. Comfort, color, fastness, and UV-protective properties of dyed samples were evaluated by laboratory tests. Results indicated that it is possible to achieve an excellent level of UV protection (UPF 50+) by dyeing cotton/lyocell blend fabrics with avocado seed extract and produce summer clothing with improved comfort and UV-protective properties, without using any toxic materials. This work aims to investigate the thermal comfort behaviour of polyester seamed fabric regarding the change in sewing thread filaments fineness for two different seam classes: seam 514 and seam 607. Five seamed fabric samples were constructed with using micro-denier polyester filament of 16.66 tex made of five different filament numbers (38, 48, 108, 144 and 288). It was noticed that the seam thermal properties, air and water vapour permeability, and wicking can be improved if the seam is constructed with using the micro-denier polyester sewing thread. It was also found that the investigated properties increase with the increase in the sewing thread filament fineness on the seam line. The statistical results have also shown that the sewing thread filament fineness is significantly affecting thermal behaviour of the seamed fabric.

Comfort is an aspect and is considered as one of the important characteristics of clothing. Generally, the comfort properties can be distinguished into three categories, viz., thermo-physiological comfort, sensorial comfort, and psychological comfort. Thermo-physiological comfort of a fabric is determined by the ability of the fabric to transmit heat, air, and moisture from the skin to the atmosphere. Fabric made of synthetic fibers has convincing comfort properties when compared with the fabrics made of natural fibers like cotton, silk, wool, etc. When natural fibers are compared with synthetic fibers, synthetic fibers are hydrophobic in nature and provides less comfort to the wearer. Hence, in this research work, an attempt has been made to study the thermo-physiological comfort properties of herbal finished woven fabrics made from synthetic fibers coated with neem and bermudagrass. Herbal finishes were applied on the woven fabrics made from 100% polyester and blends of 50:50 polyester, acrylic fibers. These finished fabrics were tested and analyzed for durability and essential thermo-physiological comfort properties. Based on the test results and analysis it was found that significant improvements in the moisture-related properties and moderate decrease in the thermal conductivity of the synthetic fabrics with neem and bermudagrass herbal finish.

This study investigated the use of flax and hemp fibers in denim fabrics in terms of thermo-physiological comfort and handle-related properties. Cotton/flax and cotton/hemp blended fabrics with 2/1 twill and 3/1 twill weaves were selected and evaluated compared to pure cotton fabric. Besides, the effect of rinsing was examined. The findings revealed that the use of flax and hemp fibers improved the thermo-physiological and handle-related comfort properties of denim fabrics. Higher air permeability and water absorbency along with quick-drying behavior could be achieved in flax and hemp blended fabrics compared to pure cotton fabric. Handle-related comfort properties of flax and hemp blended fabrics indicated soft touch. Although the extension and formability values of the blended fabrics were low, they were at an acceptable level and were improved after the rinsing process.

The hairy skin of the human body is the main receptor of fabric contact. In order to evaluate clothing comfort objectively, electroneurophysiological tests with nine subjects were carried out to determine their cognitive differences in fabric static and dynamic contact. Electroencephalography and electrocardiography signals were collected when the subjects statically and dynamically touched a piece of polyester fabric with their forearms. According to their electroneurophysiological responses to fabric contact, the subjects could be categorized into three different types, namely, extraordinary, ordinary and nonsensitive ones. Their different sensitivity could be observed from the activities of α waves, sympathetic nervous system and pneumogastric nervous system. The extraordinarily sensitive subject responded to the fabric–skin static contact with an intensive α rhythm reaction followed by a suppressed α wave, an enhanced activity of the sympathetic nervous system and a mild participation of the pneumogastric nervous system. During dynamic contact, the pneumogastric nervous system activity increased greatly to balance the nervous system. The ordinarily sensitive subjects responded gently to the fabric–skin static contact, with a gradually suppressed α wave, an enhanced activity of the sympathetic nervous system and the near absence of the pneumogastric nervous system. Fabric dynamic contact induced a strong α rhythm reaction followed by a suppressed α wave combined with a joint effort of the sympathetic nervous system and pneumogastric nervous system. The nonsensitive subjects responded with almost no difference between the fabric–skin static and dynamic contact in both electroencephalography and electrocardiography tests. This preliminary study could provide an efficient way to identify different types of subjects and lay a fair ground for comparison purposes in future electroneurophysiological studies of clothing comfort. Embroidery is a form of embellishment obtained by processing the figures on various surfaces. It has been done as multi-needle and computer-aided since the 1990s. Embroidery practice is applied with the aim of improving the appearance of the product and separating the product from similar ones. The embroidery process has direct effect on the cost and sale of the product and is used widely in the garment industry. Embroidery applied on the surface is supported by interlining in order to have better quality of the embroidery. In this research, all parame-ters intended for obtaining embroidered surface were kept constant and five different interlining types were ap-plied as variables. Physical and comfort tests were performed for evaluating the comfort features of the embroi-dered surface. According to the findings obtained from the study, the use of water-soluble interlining was found to be appropriate in places that were in direct contact with the skin.

Joining the great performance and sustainability is the clothing dilemma of the twenty-first century. Efforts have been made to invent new functional fibers without harming the environment, during the manufacturing process, or even after the product use. COCONA® is a polyester yarn widely employed in sportswear for athletes, given its capacity to maintain the core temperature at an optimal range. The sustainable program launched by this yarn producer depicted adding a biodegradable character to their products while preserving the original functionalities. Our study aims to compare the wear comfort properties namely the air permeability, the water vapor permeability and the drying behavior of the two yarns (regular and biodegradable). In this study, six knitted fabrics were produced: where three using the regular COCONA® yarn and three using the biodegradable COCONA® yarn with the same pattern and machine settings. Results showed that using the biodegradable COCONA® yarn increases the breathability and improves the drying capacity of loose knitted fabrics and it has no significant effect on tightly knitted structures. In this study, seven different samples have been knitted in jersey and piquet structures using various antibacterial yarns. Cotton, polyamide, lyocell, polyester, acrylic, viscose and their blends have been used to prepare samples. Samples are tested for thermal conductivity, air permeability, water vapour permeability, coefficient of friction, abrasion resistance and recovery after compression. Acquired data are evaluated to determine the most appropriate type of yarn to be used for the diabetic socks. Test results show that antibacterial 100% polyester yarn is the optimum yarn for a diabetic sock among all the investigated yarns. This yarn has high air and water vapour permeability. In order to further explore the shaping effect and wearing comfort of shaping clothing, three methods for evaluating the comfort of shaping clothing are summarized and analyzed, namely psychological evaluation, physiological evaluation, and physical evaluation. The advantages and limitations of various methods are summarized. And the influencing factors of the comfort of shaping clothing from three levels of human body shape, structure design and material performance are also analyzed. Finally, it is pointed out that in the future, based on the analysis of human body shape, structural optimization can be carried out according to different shaping requirements, and new technology can be applied to develop comfort surface accessories. Combined with qualitative and quantitative evaluation methods, the influence of local feeling on overall comfort can be analyzed, which can provide reference for the development of the comfort of shaping clothing.

Fabric liquid moisture transport properties in multi-dimensions, called moisture management properties, influence clothing comfort. For clothing comfort, moisture must be quickly removed from the body surface in the form of liquids and vapors. This removal depends on the fiber type and textile structure such as yarn and fabric type used. In the fabrics requiring elasticity, such as tights, sportswear, swimwear, underwear, and corsetry, the use of elastane yarn gradually increases, and these fabrics are also fabrics that require high clothing comfort. Because of this in this study, it is aimed that moisture management properties are comparatively researched in plain knit fabrics containing elastane at different ratios. For this aim plain knit without elastane and 3 different fabrics with elastane obtained by 19.7 tex cotton yarn and 44 dtex elastane yarn were used as samples. Elastane yarn was fed to feeders as 1/1, 2/1, and full ratios. Moisture management properties of the samples were determined by an SDL Atlas MMT test device according to AATCC 195 standard. The study results show that elastane content in plain knit fabric strongly affects moisture management properties, and overall moisture management capability (OMMC) decreases with increasing elastane ratio in the fabrics, and thus, high elastane content reduces clothing comfort. Plain knit has the best performance, whereas full cotton/elastane fabric has the worst performance, and 1×1 cotton/elastane fabric is very much close to 2×1 cotton/elastane fabric in terms of moisture management. The aim of this research was to investigate woven women's blouses in terms of sensorial comfort. In the research, a "Sensorial Comfort Assessment Model" including objective measurements and subjective evaluations was created. The objective measurement results showed that the silk fabric was the lightest and thinnest, the polyester fabric was the tightest, softest, loosest, driest and most resistant to wrinkle and the lyocell fabric was the heaviest one with the lowest air permeability. The subjective evaluation results showed that the fabrics were categorized into three groups as silk-polyester-viscose, cotton-lyocell and linen according to their similarities. In summary, the similarity coefficients between the objective measurement results and the subjective evaluation results obtained by touching the fabrics were at a low level; however, the level of similarities between the subjective evaluation results obtained by touching the fabrics and wearing the blouses were higher. The aims of this review are to (1) summarise the current research of sports clothing as it relates to thermoregulation, comfort, and performance during exercise in the heat, (2) identify methodological limitations and gaps in the knowledge base of sports clothing, and (3) provide recommendations for exercise testing protocols to accurately assess the impact of sports clothing in athletic populations during exercise in the heat. Sports clothing consists of lightweight and breathable fabrics, surface treatments, and various designs which aim to enhance sweat evaporation and comfort during exercise in the heat. Sports clothing comprised of natural, synthetic, and chemically treated fabrics has been investigated during exercise of varying durations (15–120 min), intensities (20–70% VO2 max) and types (fixed intensity, incremental, self-paced), and in an array of climatic conditions (18–40 °C, 20–60% relative humidity). To date, few studies have identified significant differences in thermo-physiological, perceptual, and performance measures between natural and synthetic fabrics or compared the effect of chemical treatments to their non-treated equivalent on such measures during exercise. Collectively, previous wearer trials have failed to replicate the upper limit of training and competition demands when assessing sports clothing in endurance-trained individuals who regularly train and compete in hot and humid climates. Clothing comfort has also been evaluated using simple scales which fail to capture intricate detail pertaining to psychological and sensorial parameters. The incorporation of protocols using hot and humid climates (≥ 30 °C, ≥ 70% relative humidity) and longer exercise durations (> 45 min) is warranted. Future research should also consider exploring the effect of sports clothing on thermal, physiological, perceptual, and performance measures between males and females, and assessing clothing comfort using a multi-dimensional approach. The clothing comfort sensation is a combination of complex components, including psychological and physiological responses. General linear analysis is not always sufficient for the evaluation of the clothing comfort sensation. The current study sought to predict the clothing comfort sensation of wearing an undershirt using an artificial neural network (ANN). We constructed ANN models with psychological sensation data and physiological response data as inputs, including electrocardiogram and thermo-physiological indicators, and the clothing comfort sensation as the output. For the input layer of the model, three conditions were used: the psychological response data only, the physiological response data only, and both the psychological and physiological data. The number of hidden layers in the models ranged from one to three, and the number of units in each hidden layer was changed when fixed values of 30, 60, and 90 were used, or according to the number of data points in the input conditions. The results revealed that, among the three conditions, the accuracy rate was higher when both psychological and physiological response data were used as input. The prediction results exhibited an accuracy rate of up to 85% for unknown test data. The results suggest that the method of evaluating the state of clothing comfort sensation when wearing an undershirt using psychophysiological response measurement was effective and that neural networks are useful for predicting the clothing comfort sensation. The aim of this study is to develop a new approach for objective comfort assessment of knitted fabrics used in sportswear industry. The method is based on measurement of various mechanical and heat / mass transfer properties and converting the test results into the axis values to draw multi-axial graphics. In this paper, principles of sensorial and thermo-physiological comfort of clothing are briefly explained, and as example of their application, experimental determination of a wearing comfort of men's casual jacket is presented. The measured parameters involve thermal and evaporation resistance, thermal contact feeling, shear and bending stiffness of each layer including the interlining and lining, as well as the properties of the entire textile sandwiches. The used measuring instruments were PERMETEST, ALAMBETA and KES FB1 & FB2. Then the comfort parameters of individual fabrics and parameters of the related sandwiches were displayed by means of column diagrams. These diagrams also involve the algebraically summarized parameters of individual fabrics. In most cases, total values of the algebraically summarized parameters of individual fabrics to some degree exceeded the parameters of the sandwiched (compacted, laminated) fabrics. In this study five different knitted sport clothes were tested in a wear trial test with ten men subject. After the activity, subjects were included in a rest period of 20 minutes. In this period, microclimate temperature and relative humidity values were measured with a datalogger from four body regions (chest, abdomen, back and waist). The results showed that the lowest waist microclimate temperature value was seen in TS tencel single jersey fabric like the other three body regions. On the contrary to chest and back regions, the abdomen microclimate temperature values increase during the relaxing period. Also the lowest microclimate temperature values were seen in abdomen region. On the other hand the highest microclimate relative humidity values were seen in abdomen region ( 93-96 %).

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to investigate the perceived thermal comfort experienced by active Muslim women (AMW) wearing hijabs determined by their experience of comfort sensation while doing sports activities or regular exercises. This study also examines whether the casual hijabs which are widely used amongAMWare able to supply the appropriate comfort for active purposes. Design/methodology/approach - This study used the quantitative method using survey questionnaires to collect 100 primary data obtained from AMW respondents who are university students located around the Klang Valley region in Malaysia. Findings - Based on the overall results, this study suggests that the common hijabs that are used for casual applications do not offer sufficient comfort toMuslimwomenwhile performing sports activities or regular exercises. Research limitations/implications - The outcome of this study will help to gain a better understanding on hijab preferences and comfort experienced from the viewpoint of regular hijab users. The information will assist industries to consider the selection of the right materials when developing sportswear hijabs to provide better comfort for more AMW in the near future. The method used in this study is useful to gain information on consumer's profile and value-added details about the discomfort aspects of hijab which are scarce in the existing literature on thermal comfort. Little is known about how people's routine body movements when they are at work affect the perceived fit and comfort of their uniform/workwear. This knowledge gap was addressed in this study through carefully planned interviews. First, known theories from previous studies were analysed to establish a theoretical framework. Next, primary data and new information were collected through semi-structured interviews with fifteen subjects from eight industries to refine the investigation. Through these interviews, data were collected in relation to the subjects' (1) jobs; (2) routine body movements in the workplace; and (3) evaluation of the fit and movement comfort of their uniforms. Both deductive and inductive approaches were used to process the collected data so as to understand the wearers' needs for, and perceptions of, their uniform fit and movement comfort in their workplaces. Friction from knitted clothing can cause discomfort and skin issues, underscoring the importance of tactile comfort for wearers. Seamless knitted garments are assumed to be comfortable to wear, yet there is little understanding of their tactile comfort in comparison to linked seams - the most common form of knitted garment. This novel study examines the influence of a garments knitted structural architecture on clothing comfort and wearability by investigating skin friction and tactile perception across ten body regions in both male and female participants, using two commonly utilised materials and seam designs: cotton and merino wool with plain and linked seams. The impact of seam design and regional factors on skin friction and tactile perception was analysed, revealing varying levels across tested body regions. Removing seams exposed a greater surface area to skin contact, leading to higher perceived friction levels. As such, structural elements in knitted garments enhance wearer comfort.

A novel protective fabric accomplishing with an acceptable level of protective performance and wear comfort has been designed and developed. The protective fabric was tailored by integrating an electrospun PAN–silica aerogel nanofibre membrane with needle-punched viscose nonwoven fabric for simultaneous barrier performance and thermal comfort. The nanofibrous membrane was characterised and evaluated for chemical and thermal protection after sandwiching it within the nonwoven layers. The analysis of PAN–silica aerogel nanofibre revealed that aerogel particles were randomly distributed in the membrane. The nonwoven substrate embedded with the functionalised nanofibre membrane is a lightweight, soft and flexible fabric having versatile protective performance. The newly developed fabric demonstrated satisfactory resistance against radiant heat and liquid chemical penetration. Besides, the improved thermal and moisture vapour transmittance and high evaporative cooling index suggested acceptable thermal comfort of clothing due to the decreased accumulation of perspirations on the material. Moreover, the adequate breathability and moisture management performance indicated diffusion of sweat vapour through the membrane, providing favourable thermal comfort in the clothing-skin microenvironment. The type of clothing worn, revealing versus concealing, can affect the performance of women on cognitive tasks. This difference in performance may arise because of changes in body awareness that may draw cognitive resources from the goal task. The present study investigated the influence of the style of athletic clothing and body awareness on visual-motor performance in women. Participants (women ages 18–35 years) were randomly assigned to wear tight and revealing (TR group, n = 40) or loose and concealing (LC group, n = 40) athletic clothing. All participants completed the same visual-motor aiming task to assess spatiotemporal measures of motor performance. In addition to the clothing, participants were primed to be conscious of their bodies via measurements of height, weight, and waist circumference; photographs taken of their bodies; a computerized body-size distortion task; and a mirror in the testing chamber. Results revealed that the TR group had increased movement time variability and did not show performance improvements relative to the LC group. These differences suggest that style of clothing may influence motor performance in women by reallocating cognitive resources towards the body and away from the motor task at hand. This research highlights the interactions between cognitive and motor processes and, potentially, the importance of considering the impact of clothing on performance in many different contexts. The article deals with the evaluation of the feeling of comfort of the user of the equipment during his physical activity. It is a subjective evaluation of the clothing comfort of a soldier dressed in selected military sportswear while simulating physical activity on an exercise bike, based on a questionnaire construction. The aim of this article was to test selected samples of sporting military equipment together with other suitable materials in order to get the closest possible experience with testing of military clothing in real conditions. Based on the evaluation of the results of the simulated load of tested soldiers to suggest a possible upgrade of equipment to improve the utility properties of sports equipment and ensure optimal conditions of clothing comfort of soldiers. The aim of study was to present an evaluation of sports underwear under different conditions and applying two measurement techniques. The test was performed on a ergometer simulating real conditions of wearing clothes. Moreover, the material parameters of knitted fabric selected were evaluated according to standards. The utility tests performed by the ergometer allow one to assess fabric under the action of the human thermoregulation mechanism. and therefore such tests more effectively characterise the article under testing. The static electricity properties of textile products are very important, especially when clothing comfort is the main subject. In this study, four sets of clothing fabrics containing 33 systematic and 18 non-systematic woven fabrics in total were used in order to examine the electrostatic charging properties. A testing mechanism which provides static electricity by the triboelectrification method was manufactured, and electrostatic voltage values occurring on the fabric samples were measured by an electrostatic voltmeter simultaneously with the testing mechanism. The repeatability of the results was checked by using polyester and cotton systematic woven fabrics. After this stage, the effects of fabric structural parameters and the rubbing period on electrostatic charging properties were evaluated. Moreover, non -systematic commercial woven fabrics were also tested in the study. Mulberry silk is one of the well known silk types. Especially, its lustrous appearance and handle properties make this fiber type an important natural source for textiles. Even if its properties let the fiber to be produced by itself, blending with other fiber types can be preferred in order to reduce raw material costs and make it more affordable. Cotton can be a good companion to this fiber type because of its tendency to be textile material. In this study, mulberry silk/combed cotton blended yarns were produced by using siro and ring spinning systems, in three different yarn counts. These yarns were dyed and then knitted in a laboratory type circular knitting machine. The comfort properties of these fabrics were investigated. Multi-directional liquid spreading behaviour of polyester/elastane knitted fabrics under various stretches has been studied. A novel device has been developed to measure the liquid spreading behaviour of elastic fabrics under various stretches using image processing techniques. An attempt has also been made to understand the trend of the stretch behaviour of elastic knitted fabrics under different loads and the relationship between extension percentage and the liquid spreading of fabrics. Polyester fabric shows high transverse wicking rate and longer saturating time than the other two samples. Also the result shows that the area of transverse wicking of polyester/elastane knitted fabric is directly proportional to the time and inversely proportional to the load and elastane content.
