This study examines the role of negative (anger, fear) and positive emotions in addition to political attitudes (political trust, populist attitudes, external political efficacy) as key determinants of voting behaviour. We rely on the RepResent voter survey conducted in 2019 in Belgium ( n = 3236) allowing us to assess the relationship between emotions, political attitudes, and the vote for radical right (VB, PP) and radical left parties (PTB-PVDA). Findings indicate that anger is significantly and positively related to voting for radical left and right parties, while controlling for key political attitudes and issue positions. Fear and positive emotions are not significantly more related to voting for radical parties than for other parties. The results suggest that anger should be more systematically integrated in electoral research. This contribution sheds light on the link between affect and protest behaviors. Using data from a voter survey conducted around the 2019 elections in Belgium, we examine two dimensions of affect: a vertical one, i.e., negative and positive emotions towards politics in general, and a horizontal one, i.e., affective polarization towards fellow citizens. Our findings make three important contributions. First, we identify five distinct classes of respondents depending on their emotions towards politics (apathetic, angry, hopeful, highly emotional, and average). Second, we demonstrate that the combination of both anger and hope is more strongly associated with protest action than anger alone. By contrast, apathy, characterized by an absence of emotions towards politics, is negatively related to protest behavior. Third, we show that affective polarization is a key driver of protest behavior per se. We also show that the two dimensions of affect have distinctive effects. Yet they interact: Affective polarization towards political opponents compensates for the absence of emotions towards politics in general.

Elle a peu de choses à voir avec l'actualité et les commentaires superficiels qui accompagnent régulièrement les faits sociaux et politiques de nos sociétés.Dans cet ouvrage, la lectrice et le lecteur découvriront ce que recouvre la science politique, les débats qui l’animent, les objets dont elle traite et les méthodes mobilisées pour tenter de saisir les faits politiques.À des fins didactiques, l’ouvrage est décomposé en huit chapitres. Le premier porte sur l’histoire de la discipline, sur la définition de son champ d’investigation et sur les règles de base à respecter. Le deuxième présente le cœur de la science politique :le pouvoir politique et son évolution. Le troisième se fixe sur l’étude des régimes politiques :les régimes autoritaires, hybrides, totalitaires et démocratiques. Les chapitres suivants sont une plongée dans le fonctionnement de la démocratie représentative. Le quatrième porte sur les règles qui entourent le vote et l’élection, en particulier les modes de scrutin. Le cinquième traite de l’acte principal qui légitime la démocratie représentative, l’élection au suffrage universel. Les villes italiennes de Gênes et de Florence, dépourvues de carnavals historiques, ont vu émerger des carnavals anti-touristiques à la fin des années 2010. Dans les deux cas, des pratiques militantes mêlant art et activisme, ont abouti à l’invention de carnavals comme ressource de résistance contre une touristification et une gentrification galopantes. Ces initiatives portées par des acteur.e.s local.e.s, mais étant inscrit.e.s dans un réseau translocal européen, s’inscrivent dans une série d’actions subversives dont la dérision est un élément stylistique et esthétique central. En partant d’une entrée épistémologique par l’événement, le chapitre traitera de quelques résultats du projet « ARTIVISM. Art and activism. Creativity and Performance as Subversive Forms of Political Expression in Super-Diverse Cities” financé par le Conseil Européen de Recherche (ERC) et dirigé par l’auteure. Il en résulte une multitude de pratiques artistiques sur trois continents. Par des pratiques subversives et délibérément libres, sans autorisation officielle, une réappropriation de l’espace est revendiquée. Cette esthétisation des luttes à travers des performances carnavalesques a différentes conséquences, souhaitées et non intentionnées. Parmi ces derniers se trouve un amusement des touristes, initialement considérés comme cibles des satires inventées au cours des carnavals. Les effets contradictoires de la rébellion momentanée seront également analysés.

Du 16 au 18 février 2022 s’est tenue à Charleroi une conférence internationale sur les dynamiques politiques qui traversent les carnavals contemporains. Cet ouvrage rassemble les contributions des participant·e·s au colloque, issu·e·s d’horizons disciplinaires variés. L’ouvrage entend approfondir notre compréhension du carnaval comme acte ou pratique politique d’une part, et du carnaval comme instrument de politique publique d’autre part. Il vise aussi à réfléchir aux interconnections entre les différentes dimensions politiques du carnaval, à partir de contextes d’études variés et situés, des villes du sud de l’Europe (Nice, Gênes, Florence) à Rio de Janeiro, en passant par Essaouira, Liège et… Charleroi. Les contributions mettent en évidence l’articulation entre l’évènement festif et la localité, que cela soit en analysant l’espace – de régulation ou de contestation – du carnaval, ou le rôle des acteurs locaux, collectifs citoyens et autorités publiques. Politicians perceive their representative role in a variety of ways: as a delegate of their party, a delegate of voters, or a trustee who exercises their mandate independent of any external principal. Existing research finds that the tendency to adopt a specific style of representation depends on system-level institutions and individuals’ political experience and profile. The influence of the party organisational context remains little-understood. This study contributes to filling this gap by examining the effects of parties’ resources and intra-party distribution of power on the prevalence of party-delegates among their candidates. Drawing on data from the Comparative Candidates Survey (CCS) and the Political Party Database (PPDB) we find that party organisation shapes representation in a way that has not previously been demonstrated: parties with more resources and parties in which members have the final say in candidate selection have a higher proportion of party-delegates among their candidates. There is an exponential interest for initiatives concerning citizenship education activities in democracies, often designed in response to a decline in voter turnout and interest in politics. These activities are likely to — and often aim to — affect young people's political attitudes, which eventually influence individuals' long-term political engagement. It is established that citizenship education may change the levels of political interest, trust, and efficacy of the young people, depending on the type of content of the activity. However, the literature is still incomplete — and sometimes inconsistent — on the effects of an ever-increasing diversity of educational activities. Furthermore, little is known about the existence of differentiated effects of citizenship education activities depending on the characteristics of the pupils. A latent question is whether citizenship education can compensate young people's existing political inequalities.This dissertation analyzes the variation in young people's political attitudes during participation in the citizenship education activity "Jeunes & Politiek" organized between November 2018 and May 2019. This project involved 1200 pupils from 24 secondary schools (French- and Dutch-speaking) in the Brussels-Capital Region (quota based on the socio-economic characteristics of the schools). In the run-up to the Brussels regional elections in May 2019, these first-time voters pupils were asked to (1) learn about, (2) discuss with politicians, and (3) express a public opinion about a political issue assigned to them. A quasi-experimental panel design with a baseline group was set up to measure the effects of the "Jeunes & Politiek" activities before and after each phase of the activity, as well as one year after the end of the activity (5 waves in total).
