The original enrichment serology procedure for the rapid detection of Salmonella involved preenrichment, selective enrichment, and an elective enrichment step prior to application of direct serological testing. The principle of omitting colony isolation on selective–differential agar media and applying serology directly to enriched cultures has led to the development of several commercially available methods for which enrichment serology has become a generic term. These methods have included latex agglutination kits, the Oxoid Salmonella Rapid Test, modified semisolid Rappaport–Vassiliadis (MSRV) medium, and the Salmonella 1-2 Test ® .
