Logging is a dominant land-use activity across the tropics and a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. This study quantifies emissions from selective logging in a Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified concession in Guyana that includes carbon in extracted logs, tree carbon left in the forest, and incidental tree mortality caused by felling and logging infrastructure. We also estimate carbon emissions from sawmilling of round logs. Emissions from harvested trees from stump to mill gate were 8.44 Mg CO2 m−3 (131.96 Mg CO2 ha−1). The main sources of emissions were from trees killed during felling (34%) and unextracted biomass of harvested trees (32%). On average, 15.5% of the harvested tree biomass and 43% of the log biomass was converted to sawn lumber (0.78 Mg CO2 m−3 of round log volume). We find similar levels of logging emissions in our study with those reported for non-FSC concessions in Guyana (8.54 Mg CO2 m−3) and Suriname (8.94 Mg CO2 m−3) but higher in two FSC-certified concessions in Suriname (6.65 Mg CO2 m−3). Adopting forest management practices that reduce residual stand mortality from felling and improved milling technology to reduce wood waste will help meet future demand for wood products and support climate mitigation goals. Forest restoration and improved forest management are seen as options to enhance terrestrial carbon dioxide removal in many regions, yet concerns surrounding their potentially adverse surface albedo impacts exist, particularly in high latitude and altitude regions. Such concerns are often based on generalized conclusions rooted in analyses carried out over broad spatial extents at coarse resolutions. The impacts of surface albedo change are highly sensitive to local environmental factors governing both the surface albedo and solar radiation budgets, and many previous assessments either do not sufficiently deal with such sensitivities or do not qualify the conditions under which they are relevant. Using the country of Norway with its diverse gradients in topography and climate as an ideal case study region, we seek clarity to the question of whether surface albedo is relevant to consider in forestry planning, and if so, what are the important factors determining it. We find that the adverse impact of a forest’s albedo outweighs its carbon cycle benefit on only ∼4% of Norway’s total forested area, reducing to

The spatial and temporal variability of microclimate is strongly affected by forest management, so it is important to know how microclimate varies along successional gradients of managed forests, and how microclimatic dynamics in managed forests differ from those in old-growth forests. We measured forest understorey microclimate along successional gradients in regularly harvested forests and old-growth beech forests affected only by natural disturbances in the Western Carpathians (Central Europe) over a period of three years. We analysed how temperature and vapour pressure deficit (VPD) depended on forest structure and stand age, and how microclimate of managed stands differed from natural old-growth forests. Across forest landscapes we found that microclimatic conditions in managed forests were much more variable than in old-growth forests. Threshold analysis indicated that it takes approximately 54 years after clearing for microclimate to recover to conditions typical of old-growth and mature managed stands. Current forest management cycles create a microclimate landscape that is more dynamic in both space and time than the conditions to which many forest organisms are adapted in old-growth temperate forests in Europe. Adopting a harvesting approach inspired by temporal dynamics of old-growth forests, such as small-scale clearings with remnant trees providing microclimate refugia, is a suitable strategy for climate smart forestry to maintain microclimate buffering in managed forests. [Display omitted] • Liberating liana-infested future crop trees (FCTs) benefits both timber yields and carbon sequestration. • The NPV of $1 per hectare invested in liberation of 5 infested FCTs is $13.27 at year 30 for carbon alone. • The IRR of that investment in forest management is 106% • Any biodiversity impacts of liana cutting on selected FCTs are expected to be small. Infestations of trees by woody climbing plants (i.e., lianas) are common and increasing in an estimated 250 Mha of the 1 billion hectares of mixed-species tropical and temperate forest subjected to selective logging. Cutting lianas that impede the growth of future crop trees (FCTs) in these forests would sequester carbon at low cost and increase timber yields. We estimate that application of this treatment to five liana-infested FCTs per hectare across the 250 Mha of selectively logged forest would result in 0.8 PgCO 2 of additional carbon removals by the liberated trees over 30 years at a direct cost of well less than $1.00 MgCO 2 −1. The same treatment could also be applied in forests not destined for logging where liana infestations were exacerbated by prior anthropogenic disturbances. If the numbers of trees liberated from lianas is kept small, undesired impacts on biodiversity will be minimized. In July 2016, the European Commission (EC) published a legislative proposal for incorporating greenhouse gas emissions and removals due to Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) into its 2030 Climate and Energy Framework. The Climate and Energy Framework aims at a total emission reduction of 40%by 2030 for all sectors together as part of the Paris Agreement. The LULUCF proposal regulates a "no debit" target for LULUCF (Forests and Agricultural soils), and regulates the accounting of any additional mitigation potential that might be expected of it. We find that the forest share of the LULUCF sector can achieve much more than what is in the regulation now. We elaborate a strategy for unlocking European Union (EU) forests and forest sector potential based on the concept of "climate smart forestry" (CSF). We find that to-date, European policy has not firmly integrated forest potential into the EU climate policy framework. Nor have climate objectives been firmly integrated into those of the forest and forest sector at either the EU or national level. Yet a wide range of measures can be applied to provide positive incentives for more firmly integrating these climate objectives into the forest and forest sector framework. With the right set of incentives in place at EU and Member States levels, we find the current literature supports the view that the EU has the potential to achieve an additional combined mitigation impact through CSF of 441 Mt CO2/year by 2050. In addition, CSF, through reducing and/or removing greenhouse gas emissions, adapting and building forest resilience, and sustainably increasing forest productivity and incomes, tackles multiple policy goals. Conversion of natural forest to anthropogenic land use systems (LUS) often leads to considerable loss of carbon, however, proper management of these LUS may reverse the trend. A study was conducted in a semi-deciduous forest zone of Côte d'Ivoire to assess soil microbial functioning and soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks in varying tree stands, and to determine whether complex tree stands can mimic the natural forest in terms of these soil attributes. Tree plantations studied were monocultures of teak (Tectona grandis) and full-sun cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.), and a mixture of four tree species (MTS) with Tectona grandis, Gmelina arborea, Terminalia ivoriensis and Terminalia superba. An adjacent natural forest was considered as the reference. Each of these LUS had five replicate stands where soil (0–10 cm depth) samples were taken for physico-chemical parameters and microbial biomass-C (MBC), microbial activities, MBC/SOC ratio and metabolic quotient (q CO 2). SOC and total N stocks were also calculated. The C mineralization rate (mg C–CO 2 kg−1) and mineral N concentration (mg kg−1) drastically declined in the monocultures of cocoa (154.9 ± 29.3 and 49.8 ± 9.8, respectively) and teak (179.6 ± 27.1 and 54.1 ± 7.3) compared to the natural forest (258.4 ± 21.9 and 108.7 ± 12). However, values in MTS (194.7 ± 24.6 and 105.4 ± 7.4) were not significantly different from those in the natural forest. Similarly, SOC stocks in MTS (28.8 ± 1.9 Mg ha−1) were not significantly different from those recorded in the natural forest (32.9 ± 1.7 Mg ha−1) whereas teak (25.4 ± 1.7 Mg ha−1) and cocoa (23.1 ± 3.4 Mg ha−1) exhibited significantly lower values. Despite the acidic soil and recalcitrant litter conditions, increased MBC/SOC ratio and decreased q CO 2 were recorded in the monocrops, suggesting a probable increase in the fungi/bacteria ratio. The moist forests of the Pacific Northwest United States (PNW) are among the most naturally carbon rich ecoregions in the world. However, regional in-forest carbon storage levels are currently well below ecological potential. Recent climate policy proposals have renewed and deepened debates over forest sector climate strategies. This paper begins with a review of regionally applicable forest carbon life cycle assessments (LCAs) in an effort to provide some clarity around how these studies are conducted, and why their results may vary. The review highlights the importance of assumptions made during carbon accounting across the wood product lifespan and how the inclusion or exclusions of variables, such as product substitution and leakage, influence study results and subsequent management recommendations. Next we discuss the influence of climate change on forest management and planning. We conclude with a review of regional-specific factors to consider when developing optimal forest climate strategies in the moist forests of the PNW. These strategies include, but are not limited to; extending harvest rotations, shelterwood and select tree harvests (in lieu of full harvest), and managing forests for increased structural, age, and species complexity. We simulated Austrian forests under different sustainable management scenarios. A reference scenario was compared to scenarios focusing on the provision of bioenergy, enhancing the delivery of wood products, and reduced harvesting rates. The standing stock of the stem biomass, carbon in stems, and the soil carbon pool were calculated for the period 2010–2100. We used the forest growth model Câldis and the soil carbon model Yasso07. The wood demand of all scenarios could be satisfied within the simulation period. The reference scenario led to a small decrease of the stem biomass. Scenarios aiming at a supply of more timber decreased the standing stock to a greater extent. Emphasizing the production of bioenergy was successful for several decades but ultimately exhausted the available resources for fuel wood. Lower harvesting rates reduced the standing stock of coniferous and increased the standing stock of deciduous forests. The soil carbon pool was marginally changed by different management strategies. We conclude that the production of long-living wood products is the preferred implementation of climate-smart forestry. The accumulation of carbon in the standing biomass is risky in the case of disturbances. The production of bioenergy is suitable as a byproduct of high value forest products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
