2. Magical practices? A non-normative Roman imperial cremation at Sagalassos

Abstract

Many thousands of burials have been excavated from across the Roman world, documenting a variety of funerary practices and rites. Individual burials, however, sometimes stand out for their atypical characteristics. The authors report the discovery of a cremation burial from ancient Sagalassos that differs from contemporaneous funerary deposits. In this specific context, the cremated human remains were not retrieved but buried in situ, surrounded by a scattering of intentionally bent nails, and carefully sealed beneath a raff of tiles and a layer of lime. For each of these practices, textual and archaeological parallels can be found elsewhere in the ancient Mediterranean world, collectively suggesting that magical beliefs were at work. Abstract

As we stand on the precipice of unprecedented global challenges, understanding the deep-time patterns of sustainability and resilience is no longer just a scholarly endeavour but imperative for the future of our planet and its inhabitants. The collection of papers in this special issue brings together archaeologists, historians, and environmental scientists around four main topics: (1) social-ecological modelling, (2) long-term human-environment interactions, (3) modelling diachronic landscapes and (4) sustainability and resilience from past to future. Our aims are to come to a better understanding of socio-economic resilience and sustainability in past, present and future societies. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, we aim to forge new conceptual frameworks for understanding complex, long-term socio-ecological dynamics. Through the case studies, theoretical reflections and methodological innovations presented here, this special issue seeks to advance interdisciplinary scholarship on sustainability and resilience and offer fresh insights into the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in building a sustainable future. 9. Burial Terraces in the Eastern Necropolis. The excavations of Site F at Sagalassos (Southwestern Anatolia)

Abstract

On the steeper slopes in the northern parts of the Eastern Necropolis of Sagalassos excavations were conducted in 1990-1991 and 2011-2012, uncovering a series of man-made terraces (Site F). Erected from Late Achaemenid times onwards, the terracing most likely originally served horticultural and arboricultural purposes. From the Middle Hellenistic period onwards, the terraces at Site F were gradually occupied by funerary practices. During the 1st century CE, the higher terraces remained in use as burial grounds, while the lower ones were reorganized in order to accommodate at least one potter’s workshop. Whereas the workshop itself was short-lived, artisanal activities seem to have continued as indicated by dumping practices of ceramic refuse. Burial practices too continued until the end of the 4th century CE after which the area fell in disuse. This long history of interments, from Hellenistic to Late Roman times, provides a unique insight into the changing mortuary traditions at Sagalassos. Abstract

This article presents the different types of pendant crosses found in the burials of a Middle Byzantine graveyard at the Pisidian settlement of Sagalassos in south-western Turkey. The aim is to study both the chronology and function of these pectoral crosses. A variety of sources are used, ranging from stratigraphy and radiocarbon dates to contextual information and skeletal data. The crosses could be broadly dated to between the eleventh and thirteenth century AD, thus providing an indication of the lifespan of the cemetery. Moreover, the typological evolution, which was corroborated by parallels from other sites in the Byzantine Empire, allowed us to establish a horizontal stratigraphy for the graveyard. The pectoral crosses discussed here shed light on the funerary practices in this part of the Byzantine world. These generally proved to belong to very young children. They constitute a category of material culture that not only provides insights into the lives of the Byzantine population, especially in early childhood, but are also the material manifestation of the intersection between popular religion, magic, and funerary rites.
