Abstract

Over the past decades, Positron Emission Tomography has opened a new field of imaging. Nowadays, this technique is being used for diagnosing, staging disease as well as for prognostic stratification and monitoring therapy. In this respect, [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose (FdGlc) is by far the most commonly used PET agent. Many factors have been identified being responsible for a high uptake of this agent in malignancy. However, additional factors such as tumour treatment may interfere with the uptake mechanism. Knowledge of all these factors is a prerequisite for an optimal interpretation of PET studies and, consequently, for a reliable judgement of tumour status. In this article, a review is given of the factors influencing FdGlc uptake and the implications for clinical studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

36. Hypercalcemia in patients with breast cancer: a survival study.

Abstract

In a retrospective study survival after hypercalcemia in breast cancer patients has been investigated. A group of 72 patients were treated with bisphosphonate APD [3-(amino-1,1-hydroxypropylidene)bisphosphonate] and third-generation amino-containing bisphosphonates between January 1980 and October 1992. A median survival of 4.5 months was found. In a multivariate analysis, four independent prognostic factors for survival have been found: the interval between first relapse and hypercalcemia, sites of metastases at the moment of hypercalcemia, primary treatment, and the level of serum alkaline phosphatase. Patients with a 'flare' reaction on tamoxifen treatment and patients with a normal serum alkaline phosphatase level and bone metastases only had a prolonged survival. Hypercalcemia associated with visceral metastases carried a very poor prognosis. The level of serum calcium in this series of patients was no prognostic indicator for survival. Abstract

Measurements of the DNA content of mononuclear cells in the blood of patients with malignant lymphatic disease were made. In one case of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, a large fraction of large type of blasts were in S phase. In the blood of a patient with leukaemic transformation of lymphosarcoma, a population of aneuploid tumour cells with a high percentage of cells in S phase was recognized. The increase of DNA synthesizing cells in the blood of patients with malignant lymphoma was associated with activity of the disease. The fraction of DNA synthesizing cells was raised sharply during chemotherapy.

Abstract

The spread of non-Hodgkin's lymphomata was investigated in a group of 323 cases. Differences were sought between 4 histological groups: lymphocytic vs histiocytic lymphomata and diffuse vs follicular types. Histiocytic and follicular types were rare in childhood. Histiocytic lymphomata, compared with lymphocytic ones, were more often confined to sites above the diaphragm. They exhibited a higher rate of loco-regional recurrences within the first 3 months and also of late recurrence after 4 years. Lymphocytic lymphomata of the follicular type more commonly presented with nodal involvement below the diaphragm as primary or secondary site than the diffuse form. Follicular types of lymphoma compared with diffuse types, occurred more frequently in women. They were more seldom seen as primary or secondary sites in extranodal localizations. They had a smaller chance of late disease recurrence and were associated with a longer survival time after first recurrence. The mediastinum often remained clinically uninvolved. With regard to this mediastinal "skip" no differences were found between the histological groups.

Abstract

Quantitative nondispersive cathodoluminescence (CL) measurements and dispersive CL experiments are performed at room temperature on n(+)-InP substrates as a function of the accelerating voltage (Eo). The results are explained in terms of band-to-band recombination. The red shift of the CL spectrum observed when increasing Eo, as well as the large value of the measured diffusion length with respect to the radiative one are interpreted on the basis of a high efficiency of the photon recycling process.

Abstract

We have determined the origin of the spatial luminescence fluctuations observed between the dark line defects present in tensile strained GaxIn1-xP/In1-xP/n(+)-InP heterostructures (Part I [F. Cleton et al. J. Appl. Phys. 80, 827 (1996)]). For that purpose, we have undertaken semi-quantitative and spectroscopic cathodoluminescence (CL) measurements on various specimens in areas exhibiting CL contrasts which could be as large as 80%. The analysis of the variation of the CL polychromatic signal with electron beam energy allowed us to get information on the diffusion-recombination (DR) parameters of the areas under study. From the correlation between the local relaxation level of these areas and their DR parameters, we can conclude that the variation of the misfit dislocations density at the GaxIn1-xP/InP interface is at the origin of the luminescence heterogeneities. We also demonstrate that recycling, by the GaxIn1-xP epilayer, of the photons originating from the heavily doped InP substrate, enhances the CL contrast between areas exhibiting different relaxation levels. Abstract

Two tensile-strained GaxIn1-xP / InP (001) heterostructures (with x = 6.5% and x = 11.2%) have been studied by TEM and cathodoluminescence. In both structures stacking faults and twins, located in the epilayer, have been found preferably along the [(1) over bar 10] direction whereas perfect misfit dislocations have been observed at the interface in the [110] and [(1) over bar 10] directions. The two types of structures differ about the nature of the misfit dislocations and about the thickness of the twins and this is thought to be due to the different stress relaxation amounts in these structures.
